I've recently started camping around lakes on my Kayak, and find I can take a few extra luxuries. A small ice box with some cold beers sure makes life nicer while I'm hanging around in the Queensland heat lol.

Hi Shug. Great video as always. When I worked in Antarctica we used to use a tin can to save getting up in the night because it was such a hassle getting all the gear on and getting out through the tent entrance. We would then poured the contents from the can into the gap between the inner tent and the fly sheet. It would melt a hole that was historically called the gash pit. The pit was then used to drop food scraps into after cooking. Everything froze, so no smell (temp range -5 to -20 Celsius). Trips would typically last 20 days. Don't know if that would work in a hammock! But imagine a tin (large to prevent overflow) could be hung up ready to go!
I’m good with getting up to go. Haaaa. Many hammockers use a bottle. I just keep thinking about a spill. So up I get. Gash pit. Love that.

Another informative video Shug! I like that in the winter you can bring a few more comfort items since weight isn’t such a deal breaker. And if you’re with a small group you can spread out some the gear that you all can use. Don’t really need four stoves,axes,saws,giant pots, etc. it’s interesting to see how people pack. Thanks for keepin’ us educated!
True for sure...divide and go lighter. It really is more bulk than weight. Food still weighs the most usually...trip depending.

A suggestion:Several years ago I bought one of those legless fold up chairs only because it was on sale at REI for $16. It was a discontinued item that had an extra flap making it tri-fold. I started using it winter camping as a insulated pad on a regular camping chair and that extra flap dangling down also reflects some heat from the fire back on my lower legs. I also discovered if laid out flat in your hammock it becomes another layer of insulation. I also found that it makes a good adjustable back rest in my kayak.....best $16 I have ever spent. ;^)

Some of us from a couple of rendezvous ago got nothing to prove ,, leave the suffering for these high mileage humpers ... love being out on the mountain in comfort ,, just going to find the way to do it ... sometimes the sleep time runs long and extra cold ,,I've even added down booties over the big wool socks to keep feeling the toes ... but now it's gotten to the time ,, if thinking young in this old shell ,, I drag along the hot tent and stove ...... nothin' to do with fears ,,only comfort .... Thanks for the sit down and the load out show ....

I love this Shug. It is great when people share how they pack and carry on trips. Right now it is me learning from others for those winter hiking trips. This video has given me several ideas based on what I own already to hopefully pack warm(the doing will show the actuality), as I, at my age value warmth extremely high in our cold Minnesota winters. Love the channel, grandparents were groom garrison MN, spent summers in MN and enjoyed boundary waters but never spent any real time in MN in winter. We live in Arkansas , best we did this year was 19 degrees, though we were do pretty good, my wife daughter and one two dogs. Nothing close to your - 30. Ozark MT great place to hike and hang all winter long, if you every get a change to come down south. Appreciate the excellent video and all the tips. Dig the circus tricks. ‘thank you

I did my first real snow camping trip in my hammock last weekend. There wasn't much snow and it wasn't that cold but it got fairly miserable for around here. Overnight it started snowing and then the wind picked up to about 40mph. Everything was covered in snow by morning. Even big winter tarps couldn't keep the snow out.
Yessir....that is the Tarp Life. We do give up some closure for the view!
I love eating a nice hamburger from the hammock. My idea about hot feet is that they freeze dry and if you have socks they freeze dry and any wetness warms and absorbs and evens

I made a pulk out of a black plastic concrete mixing pan I got at home depot. It seems to work well if I wax the bottom. I also still have my Ribz; it's a favorite piece of gear .
I mixed concrete in my Jet Sled....just kidding.

I love my Leatherman I accidentally bought the wrong one last time after I left my previous one at a job. its the sub-$100 model, and has the straight and serrated knives, wood-saw, file, as well as the usual screwdrivers and bottle opener. I think the next level up had the scissors which I didn't think I would find useful but ended up being used a lot more than I thought I would.
Mine only comes Winter trips. Feels so heavy any other time.

I always would carry a spare coat to stuff in the bottom of the sleeping bag to wrap my feet in . Like you it's always my feet that suffered although the rest of me was toasty

my boots are quite expensive and they're made by 45 Nrth, they're actually winter cycling boots intended for Sub-Zero bicycle commuting but essentially they're the same thing as your mukluks, but they have aerogel in the soles to prevent heat transmission from your feet to the pedals. however unlike most cycling shoes these are much better for walking, because they don't have a full carbon fiber shank. the offer one version that's good for 0°f and another version that's good for -20°f, I've used both the newer versions have boa closures instead of laces. if I could figure out a way to put boa closures on every shoe I would.
when I get to my hammock I take the liners out and immediately put them into my under quilt. This works much better than letting them freeze. when I put the liners back in I actually put my foot in them to keep them as warm as I can for as long as possible before they make contact with the Frozen outer. I can't put my foot all the way in with the liner on but I put it halfway in and then take my foot out of it and push it the rest of the way in with my hand and then immediately put my foot back in.
just a quick note about aerogel: there's many types that have been designed for different purposes and with different properties and when I was looking for other brands that make gloves with aerogel, I kept running across bad reviews, consistently on many different websites, where the complaint was that it was turning into powder by the end of the season. This did NOT happen with my 45 Nrth gloves or boots, and I've used them for several years

I bought trukke boots years ago for snowmobiling and they are warm ski doo dealers sold them or they were made by ski doo also like your air planes
I had some of those boots. Prefer mukluks for hiking though. Control line planes...a passion.

After our winter trip in Kentucky with a sled, a pulk is definitely a future investment- as well as- possibly some mukluks. It’s doesn’t get as cold down in here in our bluegrass state,but I agree, that winter camping is all about comfort. Thx for the pulk info! Stay on the diagonal my friend!
Keep in mind that mukluks are made for DRY Snow....

Have to say, I live in Texas, and our winters are grotesquely different from your winters. :-) And, when you were talking about your fire starter and FA kits, I noticed Bean right behind you and he was so still I almost came her to type, "When did you get the stuffed Chihuahua?" LOL. Great winter loadout. I've thought about doing some snow camping up in Rockies, or even coming all the way up to MinneeSOtah. Would need a pulk first. Still have all my USAF issued winter stuff less the parka.

That’s very similar to our canoe rig. Although we drop the hammocks and load a tent because of our gravel bars here. I’m working on a couple of DIY Tensa rigs for this upcoming float season. Nice one Shug!

Love the video. I got the skipulk set up for my big jet sled then, got extra sled brackets for flip over ice shanty, and my other smaller sled. Great products. I have not made it out camping this winter though. I get a kick out of your stunts. I bet the neighbors just say, oh that's just Shug!

I wear a heavy to medium weight base layer pretty much all winter long depending on the temperature, but if I sweated them out I have to change to a dry set before bed... I made the mistake once of falling asleep before I changed them (intended to warm up the inside of the quilts before I took off the base layer) and that moisture went into my quilts and stayed there for some reason, which is weird because I've done it many times before and that didn't happen. It severely degraded the rating of my quilts. sure enough I dried them at the local laundromat and was perfectly warm in the exact same conditions. just like I always say on hammock forums, you can do the wrong thing a bazillion times and be lucky, but all it takes is that one time for you not to be lucky and have your assumption proven false.
Ain't nothing never perfect out there...much as we strive for it.
yes winter you do have to carry more gear and heavier down all that stuff does add more weight

I tried my first synthetic jacket this year, Eastern Mountain Sports had a pretty good deal. what I do is I take it off and I put it between my under quilt and my hammock I splay it out as flat as I can so it would be behind my back and shoulders and so that one arm would be on each side of my body. this keeps it warm for when I have to put it on, but also ensures that it dries out. so far it's been much better at wicking sweat then my down jacket was. at first I made the mistake of wearing a North face softshell jacket over it, because I could feel the wind through it, but one day I forgot to bring the shell because it was warm in the morning when I left. to my surprise not only was I warm enough at 5° f that evening, but I also didn't get any of the condensation that I was getting between the NF shell and the EMS inner, so I haven't used the shell since.
Wet down....no good!
I can't do a balaclava because I feel claustrophobic in them, but I have been using an Enlightened Equipment Hoodlem for the last couple years when it's cold enough. I'll use the fleece lined neoprene face mask on my bike, but for the same reason I have to have it as an outer layer so I can undo the velcro and take it off if I start to feel claustrophobic, without having to take other things off such as my helmet

I like the regular 54" jet sled. It'll fit a 54 gallon Rubbermaid tote in it. Used mine at BSA OKPIK winter training for lugging my two Arctic Oven tents around to the campsite.
Nice to have the choice.
