  • Here is a sublime live Mian Ki Todi from the great Pandit Mallikarjun Mansur (duration 50 min approx). The piece is quite unusual in the sense that the sam is on pancham. Look for heavenly shrutis and nearly-unlimited combinations. Raga Todi has an appeal to something unfathomable which is beyond human mind and in this number it appears as if a sage is singing the raga.....

It takes rigourous Riyaz under a Great Guru for decades. Only then one can produce such an effective rendition. Now are the days of Chamtkar and fast success.

rajshekhar mansur In the Himalayas the Dronagiri region has a uniqueness that a particular type of grass - not easily recognisable - spontaneously curls and forms the shape of OM. In fact a saint took me to a mountain where such grass is plenty, and there are OM patterns formed by that. If one rubs some bit of grass with one's hand, it evokes a smell akin to eucalyptus oil, but even more fragrant.
I thought, this unique event of viewing innumerable unearthly OMs on this forsaken mountain and the fragrance therein can match this Todi. Hence I kept one such perfect OM in this video.
I have never heard any music of this stature elsewhere. Only a saint of highest order, who has given everything in his life to music, can produce this.

Sir, this is totally divine stuff. He has paid off his debts to his gurus and has indebted us for generations. It is said that Sant Tukaram left for his heavenly abode through a craft sent by Panduranga himself. Mallikarjun Mansur perhaps would be another deserving candidate for such an honour..

I agree with all the comments. A sublime rendition and one of Panditji's finest.
Just an observation. Who was the support artist on the tabla? In laykari in ati-vilambit he's played two very strange avartans of 12 maatras each (starting approx 40.21). Panditji realises this and increases the speed. All goes well thereafter except for a couple of extra beats again towards the end!

Could be broken tape spliced together. That would account for the shorter avartans (though not the longer ones). The recording seems to skip at places towards the end.
As for the rendering itself, it is beyond words.

Bhimsenji's rendering is more or less on the same lines - the similarity is surprising, since their gharanas are different!

Best todis by mallikarjun mansur ,kishori amonkar , bhimsen joshi , Kumar gandharv. I don't know why current classical singers have no depth in their singing at all.
