    Peavey used to label their amps pre and post gain…as a young player learning about tone that really solidified the concept of driving a circuit with pre gain and controlling output level with post gain. This is also how consoles work with the preamp gain and the fader.

    I used to play through tube amps. They started breaking down too much and now i use a Fender Rumble 100, and to get my "tube amp tone" i utilize my Tech 21 Liverpool pedal. I have not missed anything about tube amps since learning how to use that pedal. The EQ is at least as good at lower volumes, the dynamics are at least as varied as with my old trusty vox ac15. They belong in the studio, not on the stage for me

      It is, but still sounds great as a guitar amp and makes a good clean pedal platform.

      I have an incredibly hard time believing a fender rumble, used as a guitar amp, with a tech 21 pedal sounds good; much less as good as an actual tube amp.
      Of course there are exceptions to solid state amps sounding good, like the Roland Jazz Chorus, but I’ve never heard a fender rumble sound very good in general. I do like something like a music man where there is a solid state and a tube stage for the pre-amp and power-amp, but I would way rather just switch to a modeler like a quad cortex or even one of the UAD Amp pedals before I’d go with a solid state setup. Of course, even with all the hassle of a tube amp, I still love mine, especially my ‘72 Super Reverb with a good OD and compressor pedal up front.
      Granted, I could be way off on how this particular combo of the Rumble and Tech 21 sound together, but I’m very curious to actually hear it. So I admit this setup may be the exception to the rule, but I’m very skeptical, to say the least. Lol.

    Gain staging is controlling the level of input relative to the output. Different amps (and studio gear) will label the input and output differently.

    I don't fault Rhett for making such a simple short. There are without a doubt there are beginners out there who this will help. I'm actually impressed that the did such a simple video, but kept it professional and not condescending.

    So if you want more distortion turn up the gain and down the master? I liked that distortion sound

    • @rome8180
      @rome8180 Před 2 měsíci +6

      That's correct. And if you want a clean sound, you do the opposite.

    I experienced this with a late 70s Peavey TNT 100 solid-state bass amp w/a 15" Black Widow speaker that I played a humbucking Epiphone Les Paul Special ll through in a local pawnshop.
    I dimed out the pre-volume before I rolled it down to 7 with the master volume on 3... WHOA JACK! I know you're speaking of tube amps but as i said this was a solid-state BASS amp and it gave a bigger dimension than if it were a regular guitar amp.

      I have the 150 and I've only gotten it to break up by itself twice, the first felt like it was about to cause an earthquake and the second was by pushing it with an old mic preamp mixer which had every light on the front lighting up lol. It stopped working the day after but only for like an hour, I think the preamp wasn't happy and gave me a time out lol

  • @jimcamp2423

    Fender does that with their digital solid state amps, like the Mustang I V2. Master & gain with it's own volume control.

    The most important thing is the type of wood the enclosure is made of, as this affects the resonance of the tubes, which is very important for the tone. This is why lunchbox amps sound so bad!
