Peavey used to label their amps pre and post gain…as a young player learning about tone that really solidified the concept of driving a circuit with pre gain and controlling output level with post gain. This is also how consoles work with the preamp gain and the fader.
I used to play through tube amps. They started breaking down too much and now i use a Fender Rumble 100, and to get my "tube amp tone" i utilize my Tech 21 Liverpool pedal. I have not missed anything about tube amps since learning how to use that pedal. The EQ is at least as good at lower volumes, the dynamics are at least as varied as with my old trusty vox ac15. They belong in the studio, not on the stage for me
Isnt the Fender Rumble a bass amp?
It is, but still sounds great as a guitar amp and makes a good clean pedal platform.
what tube amps do you like?
I have an incredibly hard time believing a fender rumble, used as a guitar amp, with a tech 21 pedal sounds good; much less as good as an actual tube amp.
Of course there are exceptions to solid state amps sounding good, like the Roland Jazz Chorus, but I’ve never heard a fender rumble sound very good in general. I do like something like a music man where there is a solid state and a tube stage for the pre-amp and power-amp, but I would way rather just switch to a modeler like a quad cortex or even one of the UAD Amp pedals before I’d go with a solid state setup. Of course, even with all the hassle of a tube amp, I still love mine, especially my ‘72 Super Reverb with a good OD and compressor pedal up front.
Granted, I could be way off on how this particular combo of the Rumble and Tech 21 sound together, but I’m very curious to actually hear it. So I admit this setup may be the exception to the rule, but I’m very skeptical, to say the least. Lol.
Gain staging is controlling the level of input relative to the output. Different amps (and studio gear) will label the input and output differently.
I don't fault Rhett for making such a simple short. There are without a doubt there are beginners out there who this will help. I'm actually impressed that the did such a simple video, but kept it professional and not condescending.
So if you want more distortion turn up the gain and down the master? I liked that distortion sound
That's correct. And if you want a clean sound, you do the opposite.
I experienced this with a late 70s Peavey TNT 100 solid-state bass amp w/a 15" Black Widow speaker that I played a humbucking Epiphone Les Paul Special ll through in a local pawnshop.
I dimed out the pre-volume before I rolled it down to 7 with the master volume on 3... WHOA JACK! I know you're speaking of tube amps but as i said this was a solid-state BASS amp and it gave a bigger dimension than if it were a regular guitar amp.
I have the 150 and I've only gotten it to break up by itself twice, the first felt like it was about to cause an earthquake and the second was by pushing it with an old mic preamp mixer which had every light on the front lighting up lol. It stopped working the day after but only for like an hour, I think the preamp wasn't happy and gave me a time out lol
Fender does that with their digital solid state amps, like the Mustang I V2. Master & gain with it's own volume control.
mind blowing information
😂
To a beginner this is gold and can save someone some time and frustration.
Isn't the point of having a master volume being able to have distortion without loud volumes? Shouldn't the amp remain distorted even when decreasing thr master volume?
You need an attenuator. Or just accomplish the distortion with pedals
@@relyt0011223344 what i was saying was that usually, when an amp has a master volume, you cam achieve distortion by crancking the pre amp volume, even with the master at lower levels
No, nirgoth has it right. Most of your 'great tones ' in the best guitar albums have been created with relatively low wattage tube amps driven by high gain.
@@taperry326 I’m just saying to get the volume low
that's cool but with how distortion is created it's not really something you can do with just a knob
it's about the physics of it, not really the fault of the manufacturer or anything
Thanks 😎 👍
Get a white ink marker, draw one on the side of the amp where it will be easy to reach.
I play a lot of R&B and it is nearly impossible to get a clean sound out of my late model Fender Champ. I have had to side line the Champ for that reason. Plus, the tones coming from the Champ are just not that warm or pleasing.
Can’t get a clean from a fender?
@@phunkyjunkee I know! That's when I'm playing thru my late model Fender Champ. It too easily breaks up. In spite of its size and weight, I try to use my Fender Blues Deluxe. Maybe the Champ is off bias?
@@Larrymh07possibly but now that you mention it, the rhythm player in my band uses one (he sings lead) and it does sound crunchy most of the time
@@phunkyjunkee Ah, thank you for the info and feedback (pun intended). Maybe I'll try out a Fender Blues Junior. They look much lighter! 😄✌️
So, how do you get a loud but clean sound? ;)
Things to know: don't buy a Tube Amp. Buy a Tone X One or a Modeler. Stop expecting your band to carry your tube amp in their truck.
My 5’2” wife is my roadie so I have no worries!
@@martydibergi5228 , your poor, abused wife. Seriously, she should revolt, bro.
The most important thing is the type of wood the enclosure is made of, as this affects the resonance of the tubes, which is very important for the tone. This is why lunchbox amps sound so bad!
My micro-dark go brrrrrrrrr
So now it's the tubes vibrating that is where the "tone"(whatever TF tone means) actually comes from? Use your head. How your hair looks, has as much affect on your tone, as if your tubes are being vibrated by the enclosure
I'll stik w my tube amps though appreciate your post
Any solution for amps like the Fender Princeton that doesn’t come with a master volume?
The Princeton is the solution to amps like the Twin ahaha. Crank that Princeton right up!!
An attenuator
basically you turn the knob with the label on it for that effect😂
What does, 'dimmed' mean?
Sometimes the perfect world 'sweet spot' contrary to what people think is NOT with the Power Stage tubes running full up..A Plexi Marshall for instance is often thought as great when everything is 'dimed'.Not the case.
Jimmy Page for one, didn't have his Marshall anywhere near flat out .
Gain staging is like trying to make ‘fetch’ happen. Gain staging = adjusting the gain knob. What other phrases can we invent?
So direct, so funny😅
Hi Rhett
I have a Marshall mG50fx
Glen, please can you test the myth that putting castors on your cab “kills the low end”?
It seems that people say this is true but has anyone actually measured it to see if it does, and if so how much?
Thanks!
Yea glen, do this experiment!
hello everyone, the amp kinda sounds like a marshall, anyone agree with me?
😊
Geezus christ this is an awful cut that makes for an awful and totally incomplete explanation of what you are actually doing.
Almost like this is a short? And encouraging seeing how your settings interplay with each other? It would have cost nothing to keep it pushing.
Um, not really.
But that is a basic concept in audio (gain and volume), not exclusively for tube guitar amps.
It's surprising to know that many guitarists don't know it. 😳
You wish you know how to play guitar. Take some classes dude and stop embarrasing yourself.
Huh?
