Now a days it has become a trend for all general category individuals to come up with stories like "There's an sc/st person in my college/my office who owns a bike and a phone and blah blah blah". On one hand there are noble ideologies on equality and on the other hand there are caste based reservations. Either the system is stupid or the men in power might have thought the people are dumb.
Of course the people are dumb but that doesn't rule out the possibility that the system is stupid, provided its aim was equality. But since equality was only their stated aim in letter but not in spirit, I would say the system is ingenious at what it intends to do and that is to take away opportunities from the second class citizens of our country i.e the General Category. Rest all is just mental gymnastics.

ask youself what you think of having a meal with a friend who is SC/ST at your house on same table
ask you grandparents or their elder siblings if you could,
tell them 'you invited a friend who is SC to you place had a meal with him/her on same table'
ask what they think of it .
ask same to your parents. ask how would they have felt of having that meal when they were your age
and ask same from your next generation .. you will see a difference an improvement on how the mentality of ppl have changed..
unfortunately the removal of castes will not happen in our generation but it is going towards it

It might be centuries old practice, but these are the times of awareness, it shouldn't be hard for people who're wholeheartedly willing to put an end to it. Why can't people start social media campaigns against this ugly system? I have seen 100's of discussions about reservations and hardly one or two come up with a sensible solution which is "no castes no reservations". Almost all fields with reservation are dominated by “oppressed" classes, because reservation is only for them, and the general/open seats are for everyone. Comparing societal discrimination to educational/job opportunities is like comparing apples and oranges - reservation in jobs and education won't change the public mindset. Discrimination in temples cannot be solved by reservation at other places, as has been evident over the past 70 years. Also, representational politics has never worked anywhere - representation is not more important than people's lives which doctors deal with.
Nobody is saying reservation doesn't need to happen. The way it is implemented today is extremely flawed. It doesn't account for social and economic mobility. Someone who is economically/socially backward or forward today, might not be so in future - neither social, nor economic status is carved in stone. There are many backward classes in general category, and many forward/dominant classes in reservation - so much so that they don't count as exceptions anymore. The only reason reservation persists today is because of vote bank politics and self serving motives of a few who benefit from it.
Most of the reservation benefits are availed by a few well to do families only - time and again, generation after generation. The rest never get the benefit of reservation. That leads to two things: firstly, the apparent/pseudo discrimination against the “oppressed", because they never needed to work as hard as the rest and skill themselves as much. Secondly, the real oppressed people never benefit from it.
A few solutions could be: 1. Allow reservation benefit only once in lifetime, so that other people in their reservation category can benefit from it 2. Make reservations more dynamic - caste/religion/economics alone cannot be the criteria, a synthesis of all must be achieved. 3. Delink politics from reservation.

Both the shops are same and sell same sweets. But why they get different number of customers.

Reservations should be on income basis....If head of the family is having good income and is capable of bearing all the expenses of family whether it is SC/ST/OBC then they should be barred from reservations.....

@Nazria OBC are like general category in the society but I can say that Muslims are in far far better position than the sc/st's. An average Indian will not discriminate against Muslims but there's very high chance that he/she will discriminate against the sc/st's. 1)Only 1 reservation in job per family purely on economic basis and limited to some years
2)Only reservation in college seats purely on economic basis
3) Special provision for coaching & good primary education for SC/ST

You don't really understand the essence of reservation. Speaking about some skilled courses which according to you don't require Reservations like medicine, Reservation is there just to enter into mbbs course, once entered there's no reservation on yearly exams and practical exams. Everybody, ( irrespective of the case he belongs to) has to get a minimum percentage of marks to become a doctor. So if a reserved person becomes a doctor, it's not because he had got reservation, it because he was capable
General candidate scored 96.45 percentile,. Not a single IIM call.
Sc candidate scored 43.67 percentile ( less than 0 marks, negative) got a call from IIM Bangalore and other top most IIMs.

Therefore the only possible solution is to give people the freedom to choose their caste, this will solve caste discrimination problem and then government should give reservation based on economic status to everyone irrespective of caste and religion.

Do you think that's the only reason why there'll always be a difference in customers ? What if the Chamar Mishthan Bhandar opens up in a Dalit dominated area ? Now, if the Rajpoot and Aggarwal shop doesn't get an equal amount of customers, will you call out Dalits for discrimination ? Stop comparing apples with oranges.
No one is interested in saying that the one who has already received the benefits of reservation should renounce it and pave the way for one who has not received.

I would like to express my opinion firstof all the government should abolish the Casteism in Hindu religion in India. Then make stricte Law for prevent the using of caste base hierarchy . After implement this law every one should be know that anywhere any place across in India using the term of caste is a non bailable offence.
The government should promote/moniter these things :

To support /encourage Inter caste marriage.
To promote Inter state marriage.

Everyone in the comments being like remove the caste system but matiesss it's our problem! No one else is capable of removing the caste system except us...so if you want change, be the change. Because no one else is gonna do it for us!
Almost all fields with reservation are dominated by “oppressed" classes, because reservation is only for them, and the general/open seats are for everyone. Comparing societal discrimination to educational/job opportunities is like comparing apples and oranges - reservation in jobs and education won't change the public mindset. Discrimination in temples cannot be solved by reservation at other places, as has been evident over the past 70 years. Also, representational politics has never worked anywhere - representation is not more important than people's lives which doctors deal with.
Nobody is saying reservation doesn't need to happen. The way it is implemented today is extremely flawed. It doesn't account for social and economic mobility. Someone who is economically/socially backward or forward today, might not be so in future - neither social, nor economic status is carved in stone. There are many backward classes in general category, and many forward/dominant classes in reservation - so much so that they don't count as exceptions anymore. The only reason reservation persists today is because of vote bank politics and self serving motives of a few who benefit from it.
Most of the reservation benefits are availed by a few well to do families only - time and again, generation after generation. The rest never get the benefit of reservation. That leads to two things: firstly, the apparent/pseudo discrimination against the “oppressed", because they never needed to work as hard as the rest and skill themselves as much. Secondly, the real oppressed people never benefit from it.
A few solutions could be: 1. Allow reservation benefit only once in lifetime, so that other people in their reservation category can benefit from it 2. Make reservations more dynamic - caste/religion/economics alone cannot be the criteria, a synthesis of all must be achieved. 3. Delink politics from reservation.
