    906 days ago, Russia thought they would take Ukraine in a week or two, even many of the most optimistic military experts across the world thought that Ukraine would fall in six months. However, I don’t think anyone thought that 2-1/2 years later they’d be watching Ukraine take Russian territory. This war is gradually becoming a modern day version of David and Goliath.

      hmm i think most people realised it would be a long drawn out affair by the amount of troops Russia had gathered. Putin also said he would take the east of Ukraine as a buffer zone. Seems like mission accomplished, i cant realistically see Ukraine taking any of it back. Yes they have taken a town, but we all know thats not going to last long. The only way out is for Ukraine to concede the east. Not that they have a choice though, its already taken by Russia. But if Trump looks like hes getting in, he will end the way by the looks, what worries me is what they will try to do before the november elections.

Russia told NATO they did not want military bases on its borders, just like the United States would not want to have Russian military bases in northern México - that is the real reason why the war started.

      Not one single comment mentions why Russia invaded Ukraine. Back in 2000 Secretary of State James Baker of the United Stated told Russia that NATO would not be moving one inch eastward. Russia told NATO they did not want military bases on its borders, just like the United States would not want to have Russian military bases in northern México - that is the real reason why the war started.

    @HasPotato Před 17 dny +3

    After USSR collapsed, most Warsaw pact and newly independent countries wanted to get into EU/NATO and strengthen their relations with the west immediately. we had referendums here, and overwhelming majorities voted yes. Why? Because even back then we knew you can't trust Russia. How could we? Just 50 years prior to that they invaded all of Eastern Europe after agreeing with Nazi Germany to split the continent between themselves.
    And we were damn right to be concerned, because look what happened - Georgia, invaded by Russia, lost 2 regions. Ukraine - invaded, lost Crimea and parts of Donbas. Moldova - forced to cope with a Russian backed "separatist" government in the breakaway region of Transnistria. Belarus - 100% under Russia's influence, forced to allow Russia to stage the invasion of Ukraine through their territory in order to preserve some resemblance of independence. Result? - Sanctioned alongside Russia. Armenia - didn't get promised Russian support during 2020 Karabakh war, result - lost the region. Previously strong ties cut. Azerbaijan? - Closer ties with Turkey than Russia. Turkmenistan? - Dictatorial dystopia. Chechnya? - De facto a sovereign emirate of Kadirov under De iure Russian control, with their own military. more than 80% of their budget is Moscow funding. I bet my ass they will be first to separate when Russia disintegrates, they have the means for that. Previously neutral countries like Sweden/Finland join NATO under Russian threat. And the list goes on and on. Russia has proven to all their neighbours that they are toxic and to be avoided. Only times someone is looking for an alliance with Russia is when other corrupt dictatorships that want Russia to support their remaining in power. Russia could've easily chosen to embrace westernism and bring prosperity to its citizens through trade, incoming/outgoing investments, yet instead it's controlled by Putin and his judo/kgb/university buddies to whom he is forced to pay from Russian resources in order to secure their loyalty. They have sent hundreds of thousands of men from poor regions to die on foreign land in order to keep up the facade in Moscow that everything is going great. While elites and the rich drink and party, their kids study in the UK, Germany, USA, while they relax in their villas' abroad - all while ordinary and poor Russians, lured by the prospect of crazy amounts of money and/or zombified by propaganda on the tv, instead of contributing to the economy via working, are dying. Kadyrovites, who were thought to be the scary warriors flee at any real chance of combat. And good for them, Kadyrov is not stupid, he wants to save his men when shit hits the fan and he has to declare independence.
    Sure our way of life is far from perfect. We have enough problems in the west. But my god, we, the citizens, live far better than Russia and countries under their influence.
