- Lyndon has replaced his MG with a classic Mini...! He flew past me whilst I was waiting int he Volvo, looped back around and I jumped in for a quick film and chat and a look at the car. #ClassicCar #Mini #ClassicMini

There's nothing like a traditional Mini. I had a "64 Cooper when I was younger, it went like a "cut cat" and drove that thing like a maniac. Little bundles of joy.
Straight cut gearbox, lovely whine, minimal stress on peripheral bearings in gearbox, mostly used in 90 plus BHP Mini's, to prevent them shredding.
Also reduces friction losses so more power at the wheels. The main reason in addition to the strength and reduced friction is you usual want a closer ratio gearbox for competition use and straight cut gears are much cheaper and easier to manufacture and the noise they make isn’t relevant in a competition car
@@peterwoodhead2569 Spot on Pete, nice to know there are others that remember them, and the benefits!
The best car ever! Such a great car to drive! I've had loads of them in my youth.
Same here Caroline, they were fun
My god that engine sound takes me back. Amazing car.
What a magical wee car, i grew up on minis, must have had 15 or more of them from the MK1 right up to the 1275 Cooper S , they stick to the road like cow shit to a blanket 😮 lol 😝 , great looking wee car man.
My Grandad had 2 Minis, My Mum had one and when I passed my driving test in 1996 I drove a 1989 Mini City until 2000...Then I bought a 1995 Mini Cooper and I still have it today 😁❤️🚗 They really do put a smile on your face...Both when you drive one and see them on the road 😎
Wonderful a road legal go-cart every one should have driven a mini i have & loved it but it doesn't have external door hinges so to me it's not a proper mini but still lovely.
That takes me back, first car I drove was my mother's (from new) '66 D reg mini, didn't sell that till the early 90s. Haven't driven anything like it since. 👍
Beautiful car. Beautiful sound. ❤️🤍💙
I had a 1978 mini when I was 27 years old. It was an absolute shed but a joy to drive. 998cc of pure fun until it gave up the ghost
Gotta love a real Mini !
My first car was a 1275GT Twin Carb and straight cut gears, all these years later I now drive an R56 Cooper S. Minis are cheap to run/service/maintain, easy to park and the best fun on a country road by far.
Fucking cheap to maintain, you sure mate, I’ve got an r56 mini and all it’s done is caused me problems with the electrics, wish I had an original mini
Geof, Thanks for posting this awesome video, (spoiler Alert ) This 'Mini Cooper S' is NOT the REAL deal,,Honestly,,i'm a Mechanic, and used to work on these traditional Car's from the 60's,,they stopped making ALL cooper 's' as well as the 998 c.c coopers in late 1969,/ early 1970, as John Cooper (from the south) whom had re-designed these car's from as early as 1961 for BMC (British Motor Corporation) to give them a wider Appeal for boy racers and they became Rally/ Race/ Sprint models for enthusiasts fairly quickly, under the Hood this one had a 1 3/4'' Su carburetor, the originals had twins albeit smaller versions! also the Cylinder Heads on Cooper 's' s had 11 studs and 1 'Bolt' due to higher compression, due to a fall out with 'John Cooper Garages ' over finance and other skirmishes, BMC could no longer use the 'COOPER' badge any longer, Hence the intro of the 1275 GT, which was utterly CRAP! The earliest Cooper 's' was a short stroke 970 c.c, they also did 997 and 998 c.c. Coopers' ( not 'S' ) also followed a 1071 Cooper 'S ' after the 970 c.c version and finally a 1275 Cooper 'S' which also had modified versions of bored out to; 1340, and 1440 c.c (the latter version a special Tuned up version done independently with a cross flow head and twin Webbers DCO 40's,and a few with Dellorto carbs (Italian design) the bit about SC (Straight Cut) close ratio gearbox, was not standard equipment, and had to be sourced after market, there were literally dozens of projects that were mind blowing in their respective Hey day, i recently sold 2 such mini's, and a few others; Lotus Cortina, and a ford Cortina Savage (V6 ) i have a Zephyr at present that i'm renovating, as i missed a good Barn find of a Ford Zodiac 6 , my all time fave from Ford!!(many happy memories of travelling to Drayton Manor Park, when i first left school. see if you can source 'CCC' (referred to as Triple C) it was a magazine Named 'Car's and Car Conversions' it ran from the heyday of the early 60's until the 70's, and it had AWE -INSPIRING conversion jobs, most that could be done by anyone with a bit of know how, and a shoe string budget, Clive Trickey was a regular contributor, as well as Bill Sollis. 🙂
LOVE THE BACK LIGHT NOT THEM SQUARE ONES THAT STARTED TO SHOW UP ON THE LATER MINI
My very first car was an 'A' reg mini, which I bought in 1991 for £500. Also blue, but darker than that one. I couldn't see the back seat properly in that one, but mine had 2 massive pockets or storage things at either end of the back seat. I took the speakers from the hifi in my bedroom and put them in there. Tunes are important! I put a couple of cushions up at the back window (thinking back, not my brightest idea) and fitted a racing 3 spoke steering wheel. Behind that, on the dash, there was a panel with loads of cool guages, none of which worked. The speedo worked, but it had a dodgy cable and when I was driving along, I would hear a click click click noise. Thankfully, the hifi speakers solved that problem. On the outside, it was pretty standard. The only thing that was different was it had wee dumpy wheels and flared arches, which were painted black. If I knew then what I know now, I wouldn't have treated it like I did and would have saved it.
Lovely Mini, what a great steal! 👍😃
I had a 1979 1098 cc Clubman. Instantly miss the handling even with a lack of power steering.
Used to have a classic mini .. You know your driving ..feeling the road.. not like the modern soulless cars today..
I had a 1963 Mini in the around 1973, it was a bit rusty but I don’t remember the strange gear box whine, however it was a fun car to drive, easy to park and surprisingly roomy.
This is a non standard car (as explained in the video) which has straight cut gears which is a modification for motor sport giving greater strength but lots of noise. Your car wouldn't have sounded like this. Some early Minis may be a bit whiny with knackered gears and worn synchromesh but that's not the case here.
Love the sound of a straight cut box, I stayed.
My first car was an M reg mini. Loved it and I can still remember the reg.
Love it love it, proper mini
If he gave that some beans, it's an animal 😊
I had a K reg teal blue mini for my first car in 1985 it was brilliant! One night 6 coppers pushed me to get it going 😂 I think they let me off not having it taxed lol! I was the tiny blonde that broke down in tea time traffic that had to get out and push the celanoid button on the engine to start it again lol. Loads of mini adventures in it, I loved that car❤
'Solenoid' the early car's had that on the floor, by the Handbrake, later versions were under the Bonnet that had no provision to ' Press' as they were solid state with a trigger from the ignition. 🙂
I don't know what it was but it was a red button under the bonnet that started the car😂
@@indiakane9327 well at least it got the car started, and got you on your way, can't see 6 coppers pushing any car for a bloke,,mind you,,,🤔,,, mmmm the hypocrisy of the Male generation, defies belief , guess that's the way it's always been, Thanks for your response, take care, and Bless 😇
Listen to that transfer gear between the engine and gearbox. Once, when I was an apprentice Aerospace Engineer, we spent vast amounts of the company's money as apprentices replacing the collapsed bearing housing for that gear with a machines one. We did lots of foreigners in those days. About 1964/5
A friend at college had a 1275GT, it felt like the fastest thing ever. Another 'larger' friend had a less powerful version, funny following him my Escort, as the whole drivers side appeared full.
Drove my brothers 90s mini Cooper back then, and nothings been as fun since.walnut dash, and all the trimmings. He asked me if I wanted to buy it for 4 grand in the late 90s.I said no,even though I could of afforded it.What a bloody idiot I was back then. 😢😢
Gosh that sound brings back some memories. Had a lovely Mini Mayfair back in the day. Where are you M549PCW?
I sold my first car, a 1968 Mini Cooper 998cc, for £300. Sooooo much fun, great car to learn to drive.
Had a series of minis when I was young , am quite tall but still managed OK , hugged the steering wheel between the knees ! My brother even took the engine from my mum’s morris 1100 which he crashed , and put it in his mini . No mean feat as the engine in a mini is configured differently from side to side instead of back to front !
3:55 hell the days of a sub 5 grand mini with an mot are long gone
its still possible, but they dont come up often, usually on facebook marketplace.
Lovely car.
I'm getting my parents Wolseley Hornet back to running condition and one of the modifications I'm doing is going to be the Cooper S disks conversion.
That’s a sweet looking mini 👌🏻
Aint it!
Love that! 👍
Yeeeees mate. I've got a van. The best driving fun you can have in a 45 year old car. It has one gauge.Who needs music.
Straight cut gears aren't stronger, though they might be if they're made from higher grade steel. They're easier to manufacture in the small batches competition parts are. The real reason is for the closer ratios.
Drop, or transfer, gears are used to get the drive from the engine down to the gearbox in the Mini's sump. There's a cog between them, the standard, helical, one can try to screw itself through the gearbox casing. Straight cut ones won't but they are even noisier than straight cuts in the gearbox proper because they aren't swimming in oil.
00:45 *I felt the **_Vibration_** through my Speaker System !*
Gear box hubby shouts out😂
Good choice.
Kind of intresting,my hubs used to smoke and own a 1275 GT,sadly the lights fuse blew at night. With no spare fuses,it was the thin metal foil inside his fag packet that saved the day,boy that 1380 was rapid!Thanks........
Wow, sounds like a 'crash gearbox' with straight-cut gears. Is it synchro?
Straight cut gearbox made its presence felt....First car was a 1962 Mini...later had a Clubman...Terrible to work on...lol...🤔😳😏😏🇬🇧
Mk4 shell on M reg plate? Another reshell done on the quiet...? Or just a private reg plate..
Motorway miles in a real mini will either give you nerves of steel or turn you into a nervous wreck.
Yes Mr Bridger
❤
Random car related comment on numerology here. I see Aston Martin are only making 333 Vantage F1 editions. Strange number to choose.
Times that number by 2, that would be a revelation!
@@David-tt2mt it would indeed.
6k is a steal!
Sweet ride Lyndon knows what to look for . A Pal of mine had a Mini ,it had a name it was called pulsation it had a one off chassis a 3 litre Capri engine ,and I thought a nice little touch was a Chrome and a engraved rear axle that was also a sweet ride,
Pop out rear windows!! Good mod.
Definitely fogs on front
All early Minis had pop out rear windows. The later versions (of the original Mini design) dropped the pop out window feature.
@@MrAdopado
Sliding front windows and a cord to pull to open the front doors
@@Yorkshiremadmick ... and huge side pockets in the doors and at the sides of the back seat ... but only because there was no safety protection from crash bars which would otherwise have been there!
Hi there, would the owner be interested in swapping for a really clean bmw e30? Thanks
I don't think so, he loves it!
Straight Cut box is horrible for daily driving. I couldn't spend more than 10 minutes in that car however nice it is
Deathtrap!
NOW THATS THE MINI I LIKE . NOT THST BMW SHIT .
God almighty that g box sounds like a sack of spanners straight cut gears or not it needs oil in it
Who now owns JohnKirby's race Mini?
Good question!
@@GeoffBuysCars Wonder who now owns his Mk2 LutusCortina?
Couldnt help but like that example of an early mazda leaving in the background...added bonus to a brill video...sorry...i must get out more often!!🤣😅😁
9:37 *I did it long ago Leicester to Helston [Cornwall] in a Mercedes 380 SLR from Leicester to Helston in 4 hours 8 Minutes, 323 Miles via M5/A38 {Plymouth} and A390 and A39 again - Must be a record to this day - Did 108 Miles in an hour on the M5 - No Cameras in those days !*
Better times….! I once did Bath and West Showground to Newquay in an early Audi TT in an absolutely ludicrous time. Can’t do it anymore.
I'm claiming a record from 1980 in a 1275 Mini ... drove from Edinburgh to Redruth in Cornwall at an average speed of 78 mph (without deducting time for fuel stops) ... indicating 90 for much of the trip.
@@MrAdopado
Suspect that it's not even a MK3, or the shell is not..
This is what CZcams was meant to be like.
I've never had the pleasure of being in one they look fabulous in rally garb. As much as take me to Geoff Land sounds good it's content like this why you can't change. You'll have to make a new closing message even the misses says GEOFF BUYS CARS STILL CZcamsS MOST BORING CAR CHANNEL
I got bored of the whiny gearbox sorry, great mini though, the new ones are s**t and bigger which defeats the name mini, 🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧
Sorry to a lot of people who love the Mini...but I never understood the hype about it. Yes, it's kind of a cult. But you get so little car for that much money. It's uncomfortable, it's loud (listen to that whining gear box...), it's impossible to go on a longer journey, it's unreliable...so what is it? I just don't get the point.
This might bring up some controversal commentaries I know. I am a real petrol head, I love cars (especially ICEs) and I've bought, owned and sold quite a lot of them, but I never wanted a Mini. Sorry guys.
I drove from Edinburgh to Cornwall only stopping for fuel. The whining gearbox didn't come as standard! Had half a dozen of them, including a 1380 wee beast that saw off the occasional Porsche ...
jeff buy a mini
A proper mini not that fart they call a mini now a day it's a B M W fat and plastic andkrap
Geoff i thought you were a real sensible guy. Anyone who buys an old mini is a complete "crank". They are the most dangerous pieces of rusty crap ever to be road legal.
Yeah but using that ethos you have to bin the entire classic car industry because it’s all rusty old dangerous crap 😂
I crashed a couple and came away unscathed ...
