SKETCHIEST RACE EVER in the Turbo 8.1 Silverado

- Too much power and not enough traction makes for an interesting combination that will keep you on your toes. I wanted to give the UglyTruck a final send off and test its limits of the Turbo 8.1 a few more times before we put the built 1,500hp race motor in its place, and luckily we have just the place to do that. The only bad part is I had my street tires installed and when the turbo spools up and the 900lb.ft. of torque hits all at once, the traction just isn't there. UglyTruck is a 2000 Silverado 1500 with a junkyard 8.1 with an S480 turbo strapped to the side. It weighs in at 5,200lbs, and makes over 900lb.ft. of torque at the wheels. For this event I had my 275 Pirelli P Zero street tires in place, but the combination is just too much to be useful. Next time I'll be back with my Mickey Thompson drag radials in place so hopefully we can stick all that power down to the ground and spin which would make for a lot quicker time.

Depending on the timeframe we have this summer, who would want to see the limits of the Junkyard 8.1 being pushed even further? I don't wanna blow it up simply for the sake of blowing something up, but if we did put it on e85 and crank 'er up even more, I do kinda wonder how much is left on the table...
Thats what we all want to to see. Set a goal of 10s or bust. E85 and a bunch more timing but you can make the power with boost safer. Less timing more boost will be safer
Do it.
Moon tune
And please put some good tires on it💯
Do it 🤙🤙
it’s a funny feeling when you have a new motor on hold, and not being so worried about blowing up.
Well the vw 1.9 tdi in my mx5 blew up and I had a built motor ready to go in so I know that feeling
Mad respect for how humble you are. Just happy to be racing and showing respect to everyone’s build
Taking the tail gate off hurt you too, 50 lbs is multiplied because of the distance from the gate to the rear end, ends up being more like 75 off the rear axle.
As far as I'm concerned, any truck that can go from the street to the track and put on a good show *without* making ANY changes and then drive back home is the best truck!
You should really get rid of the back seat unless you use it...it is shockingly heavy!
its held up much better than I would've expected to be honest... and yes, we def. need to shed some excess weight from this thing
@@LawrenceTolman love to see the copo truck at this event, maybe bring both and alternate runs running same opponents with both to show the differences.
@@LawrenceTolman AC delete when? 😂😂😂
Fast doesn't always equal cool. Those electric vehicles are fast but they are not cool. And the owners did nothing to make them fast. Building your own vehicle whether its fast or not will always be cooler. You rock LT!
Tire mod! Not other tires, beadlock wheels with radials. It's a safety concern for me. And double check those breaks, they're working fine now, but so many CZcamsrs are getting in accidents. Be safe out there, can't wait to see this thing with the new motor!
Thanks for racing me man I love the truck hope to race ya again with you not on street tires p.s. I’m the nova
Absolutely, it was a blast! We’ll have to meet up again at some point
Really liked the editing on this video showing the vehicle details/engines while about to race them. Looking forward to uglytruck getting some traction!
I was glad u addressed the tire issue, cause I was wondering what was going on... thing is gonna be a rocket with the new set up
Definitely looked like a lot of fun can’t wait to see the new motor
Ya did well with the long wheelbase, making it down the track every time.
Regardless of the lack of traction - I’m sure you had a great time!
I’m looking forward to seeing the monster big block. It’s gonna be a beast!
it was a blast for sure, win or lose.
@@LawrenceTolman
Absolutely! I used to run test and tune for years - just for fun😃👍
That cummins ram charger was bad ass
agreed! it surprised me with how quick the chargers lit, think he said it was an S480 over an S469 or something similar
With traction you would have won most of those races and embarrassed that rivian
Love your videos man keep up the hard work
I love the send it attitude !
Growing up with your dad, I remember that nice black nova he had. Some of the toys he and your uncle's had would be fun to have now, if we only knew then about restore and not destroying
Man the ugly truck looks so badass on those Micky's 👍 So excited for this build. I daily the same truck .....love my old Silverado
It really seems like you're just slamming through that converter hard. What a cool build. I'd been looking for turbo 8.1s for quite some time and while I get that it's a cakewalk to take a LY6 or LQ or any other Gen 3/4 LSx and make a million power for $900, these are clearly very overlooked and im happy to see you beat one up.
That looked fun. That's what it's all about👍
Nice burnout right over the school sign! 😂
Good work and the burn out in the school zone was the best ending.
The sounds make me shiver..
Good sportsmanship bud way to go still had fun
Definitely needs some 305s for more traction. Seems like just you did a rolling burnout every race
Yeah, does need a much better tire. pretty much did nothing but spin lol
Width does not add forward traction. A wider tire does not put more rubber on the ground, and tires grip best in the longest dimension of their contact patch.
His drag tires are much better for this for different reasons- most prominent is the 15" wheel diameter. All a wider tire does is give you better lateral (cornering) traction, with the tire rubber being the same.
What gives you more usable contact patch is LOWER TIRE PRESSURES.
**edited for spelling**
@@Broadpaw_Fox a wider tire does improve traction lol. A 28/10.5 is going to have more grip than a 28/9.
@@tristan709- that depends entirely on tire compound and pressure. Same compound and pressure, the 28x9 will hook better, unless you're running it at too low a pressure for the weight, where you get weird issues due to deformation.
Tire width is (best) determined by the weight it's carrying- you want enough width to carry the weight safely, and more doesn't help acceleration.
@@Broadpaw_Fox bs lol my transam hooks WAAAAY better off the brake with a 15 wide vs 10.5 non w and I mean way better the big tire can take all 4 of my kits (6 stages 750in theory) and hook it violently the 10.5s just spin at over 200 mph and don’t grab to about 120 ft down the rd(concrete) the 15wide spin but not nearly as fast or for as long
Just 2 send it....lol... music to my ears... keep it up LT love the ch.
Great sportsmanship
That place looks awesome. Fun stuff!
it was a ton of fun to go there
Nice truck lots of hp and torque !!
I love seeing you beat on the ugly truck! That’s why you built it, and you’re doing great! **Side note, it’s super tough for me to get excited about someone taking a completely stock vehicle (such as an electric vehicle), and race it. I would much rather see that DOHC turbo single cab Mitsubishi bang out 15’s before some stock Tesla turns a 12.
DUUUUDE!! Such a sick truck. We're about to get another G8 and compound it.
Hell yeah. Sounds like the balladeer in the beginning.
Holy tire spin Batman!
He just out there having fun 😂 fw yo vibe bro you seem like coo peeps 👍
I absolutely love the whine
Your turbo screeming sounds badass
Love the burnout right over the school 🤣🤣
At 7:35 you see the snaky tire marks your leaving behind going 80+ 😂😂🔥🔥
Those rolling burnouts are 🔥
Glad you like them!
Heheh, that nova said "byeeeee". But that's an awesome car. And I can't wait to see the ugly truck with the built motor and some stickies
This is why I love you dude 3:50 marks why I follow you.
much appreciated!
I would like to have the black one, even though the other one has more road manners, fuel mileage, longevity and easier to get parts for less cost. Great evening to you LT.
That intro was on point🤣👏🏽
thanks! i got a chuckle out of making it
Nice video can't wait to see this on a good tire. It seem like that's the real problem seems like you could have one at least 3 of those races
I agree, when the tires spin that bad the acceleration rate goes way down
You sir are a bad ass it was awesome meeting you. I own the ramcharger. I would love to run with you again when you get some traction that truck is a monster!
hey thanks! love the setup you've got, and agreed, we'll have to run 'em again at some point!
@@LawrenceTolman thank you.. Definitely hit me up the next time you are going to go out
damn, that was getting nasty. good send off.
😂 I loved the intro… it’s not exact but made me think of the intro to my name is earl
That school zone burnout 😂🙌🏼
Great intro
Good driving
Thanks 👍
would you ever think about using weights off the rear bumper? like how sled trucks put weight in the nose to balance the load from the sled, but in this case low and out past the rear wheels try add leverage down on the rear? i know alot of people go with a drag wing...but it could be something to toy with. Love the content as always LT
I love watching a full size truck top end a beemer well spinning 🤣🤣
Because N55
That school zone really did need new striping nice work.
Would have been interesting with a little traction. Still a cool video. Good thing you brought it home straight.
Burnout in the school zone. Love it. Been awesome if the kids were there to see it.
i wanna send you a holley terminator so you can get some more fun out of this, boost by mph and traction control and all the cool shit.
I’ve got some goodies on order from Holley that will hopefully take care of that. I’ve just gotta figure out how to make it all work together lol…
@@LawrenceTolman ive done many integrated setups and i can guide you if you want
thanks! I'll def. keep that in mind when the time comes!
love that green
Fun stuff
If you woulda have had those Mickey Thompson’s on you would have probably beaten that green turbo GM! Ugly truck is a beast! Can’t wait for the new motor 😎
Props to that RamCharger💯💯🙌
that was a badass setup
The copo needs that green truck's front clip and bed. Ugly truck does too, make it the "not-so ugly truck." Lol 😂
What's up L.T.!
So I'm sitting here at the house and an idea popped in my head watching your you run your ugly truck down the track. So your losing traction due to tire selection, your truck's a torque monster and, because ugly truck is super light in the back end....
So I was thinking one could use his tailgate a spoiler....
So not use the tailgate would look bone stock but when you got to the track you could use it as a spoiler.... it would hinge at the top, flip up from the bottom and custom brackets would hold it at the angle needed for downforce....
I never seen anything like that before and thought it might be a cool way to help overcome your traction issues.
Also it would go with the theme of having a sleeper truck with a sleeper spoiler... Lol
Hard to judge off of stock tach, but convertor appears to be loose (5.5k). Big power can drive through. Not sure what stall speed was expected. GL
Great video. But that wasn't a fair shake for the ugly truck. Most of those races should be much closer on the radial. But you know that. You are a good sport regardless.
Pretty sure that Ramcharger was just on our dyno up here in Emmett 🤣
Oh boy, what a burn out! Watch out for the PoPo, a big smokey in front of a school zone, and on video ( I know school is out), could spell trouble... 😵💫
Slick Pissed i missed you at Bandimere lol I got a 91 K1500 sport that needs to test and tuning, would love to get your opinion
You did great against that rivian!
Did you happen to catch a username or something from that green truck? I love that HD single cab...
Scary how those rear tires spinning on high speed , easy to lose control
Back seat is a quick weight drop as well North Maine steve
Turbo diesels have so much low-end to mid range torque I don't see very many gas burners leaving the line faster than them but if the gasser has more on the top end you'd be able to walk around them lol, I was racing a compound turbo built Cummins and from a dig that monster launched 60ft out before my gasser even went 10ft but passed him 300ft before the line. I might have been a fender out it was an awesome run and both us went low 9s. I'd be thrilled to race a strip with you lt, my baby might give you a run for show lol.
It's 87f up here in Canada. Looks like the weather is fair where your at. We're thinking about moving south and obtaining dual citizenship and moving closer to the mountains. I always wanted to live by the mountains. Looks beautiful where you live. But anyway nice truck.
You need to mount the new engine just behind the cab hehe
You just confirmed what you knew for a while: "The weakness lies on the tires." Don't get me wrong, Pirelli P-ZEROs are no slouch when it comes to road performance, they're just not a drag racing tire. Plus, the new engine set up will tear them up on the first pass!!!
Quick question: Have you ever thought about parting with the Ugly Truck and getting another stepside? I mean, for the weight savings (there's gotta be some weight differences between the two.) Cool video!!!🤙
I love your trucks LT. turn her up Man. That old truck is really cool👍😁✌️👌🙏🏻
Thanks 👍
5:23. I would have sworn that you said "f*** that". Upon rewind and review, it was clearly "spun bad". Lol.
That 150 pound tail gate may have helped with traction
Oughta make it into a drift truck!
In the minute 8:18 there was a moment when the speed increased and then decreased, maybe it was because of the spinning tyres but by the other hand it could be something transmission related I mean it took a lot of time to increase the speed around 90mph. So if saying it can be beneficial there it is.
Hey LT, you should look into the removal of the tailgate. From what I remember it doesn’t help and in fact is worse. 👍
I think he said it weighed 50 pounds, which could have been the difference in him spinning the rears or not.
Yes, 50# off of the back tires. Maybe even move the battery back there too. Pour some lead in the bottom
Sick Pulls!! Where are you guys racing? Would love to participate in a event like this. 427 Procharged Crew Cab NNBS myself.
Thanks, it’s a lot of fun. This is at Utah Motorsports Park in Grantsville Utah
leaving some healthy stripes on the rolls
Hello. I have a 8.1 with a 6 speed manual transmission. I've been searching for over a month for a company to do some performance work to my truck. I have no idea what direction to go. I wanna wake this engine up. Raylar is telling me with a cam kit I can get 150hp from it. But is there a better option for power? I only wanna spend like 5 or 6 grand and get as much as I can without braking other stuff. Also being told to get a super charger. So you have any suggestions what you would do for that kind of money? Again maybe it's not enough money I'm not sure. Thanks
That tail was wagging good against that turbo LS truck 😭🤣
yeah, it was stepping out a bit for sure
@@LawrenceTolman even though it doesn't win races it's still kind of fun IMO
Those Rivian trucks weigh around 7000 lbs
Must have been the School of Burnouts at the end there? :D
holy s**t that ramcharger is fast
yup, it was very impressive
Gotta love that BBC torque, Go For 20PSI :)
Hazing those tires
Naughty Naughty, Burnouts in School Zones will get your car crushed in my part of the world LOL
Have you been to Hypoxia Dragway in Evanston Wyoming? It's 1/8 mile, but only about 90 minutes from SLC.
never been there actually
@@LawrenceTolman it is definitely worth checking out. They do a street tire days, and slick days. It's a small track, but usually you can get as many passes as you want.
Cool man I bet that was dun
You need some weight transfer to the rear wheels so you can stay on the pedal, the. Some more boost and a methanol water injection setup
Need a load of firewood in that thing!
Yep should swapped on the slicks
Spinning ain’t winning hahaha looks like a fun event
no, its not, but it was a ton of fun either way
Of course w the slicks aired down I wanna see like 20 + lbs in that 8.1 prove the masses maybe proper air fuel can keep that big block alive
You going to switch to aftermarket ecu? Have safeties, more timing resolution? When you use built engine
Yes, the new engine will be controlled by a Holley Dominator EFI with many safety checks in place to prevent damage in the case of low oil pressure, fuel pressure, and so on. Plus, we should be able to integrate traction control as well.
🏎👍🏾
