If you want to learn how to stay ahead of other freelancers and actually make god money freelance platforms, this video will help: czcams.com/video/BaOPcFEnl7M/video.html
Freelancing is very difficult. Finding clients and them actually paying you is another story. Freelancing is stressful even if you have the right skill set. I suggest you work as a full time designer at an agency because at leat you'll get paid by the end of the month, Don't just jump into freelancing until you're ready.
I am freelancer myself and I could tell you that the stability could be the biggest issue. It requires a special mindset to live by it. I had a very stable income for 5-6 months without overworking too much, because my client has a lot of work on that time period, so I get used to that consistent flow of projects but eventually the work become smaller and smaller in amount so I had to grasp the hard realization that I have a few months without such great income. So you must learn to diversify your income and a lot more, but in the other hand the freedom you have is very rewarding.
This is a very valid point. The income as a freelancer is far from stable, and will fluctuate a lot. It's something difficult to get used to, and makes life very uncertain
Same happened to me. Before pandemic, I have 2 consecutive projects as a writer in a publishing company and I thought it will go on and on but the project stopped. So, I realize I really need to have this so called diversity in many things so I can handle this challenge when it comes to stability.
So true! There are certainly perks to working for yourself, but that does come with the occasional headache too. Keep up the good work. Love the channel.
Thanks Tom. What I like about this video is that you outline the drawbacks and hard truths of becoming a freelance designer, but at the same time give encouragement, insight and inspiration.
Thank you very much for this video. As a Graphic Designer, I really intend to go freelancing. But I am really set back by the security aspect. I really found this video very helpful. I have seen a few other designers crash after going freelancing and I'll advice others to take their time. It's really a downer when you put in a lot of work into someone else's company and also get underpaid for it. But I believe with proper planning and patience, it will even tually pay off. I currently work as a creative executive at a film company and I can say I have gotten soo much experience, more than I ever did designing on my own. Thank you again Satori. Bless you!!!!
Many people don’t understand it’s all about connections. If you know people you will earn money very fast it’s incredible. Me and my friends are students or unemployed but we know many local celebrities. In two weeks we will fly to London to film and photograph the international Barcup. All I wanted to say is you have to get out and get to know people it’s so so important.
As for now, I have been a freelancer both company gigs, and on my own for over six years; the reason I want to be hired now on a payroll and one thing you left out is All the work that goes to marketing and selling your products and getting new clients. that's what wears me off the most, especially with the pandemic bump economically. This is risky business, takes a strong mind to keep going! Love your videos though!
So true! Something else to think about is your tools. It's possible to get many things done through your smartphone and apps. But if you really want to step in as a full-time freelance, consider investing in a laptop / pc, printer, sound system, internet, etc. You also will need to think about where you will be working. Plus, where are you saving your files? Working in a company or agency, these "details" won't be a worry. However, when you do it all by yourself, you will understand the need to keep all these essentials / basic things in check and have a plan B if some of your equipment stops working or present any bad function. But remember, everybody does mistakes, don't lose hope. If you feel this is the path for you, go for it! (It is what I tell myself :) haha ) Great discussion, Tom! Thank you for bringing this content.
really great points Emma. My Dad was talking to me about if he has an accident and damages his arms or legs, his career is over. In the similar fashion, designers need to make sure their equipment is in check, like you mentioned.
I just made the jump 2 weeks ago from working as an in-house graphic designer to freelancing as a videographer. It’s a big change, but my calendar is filling up with work and I am enjoying it so far!
Every single word about freelance spoken my our friend is totally true. If your not confident and sure about what your doing, sit down and educate yourself first. Once you are ready to except failure in a positive way and mind set for your passion……..go for it. I’ve been there.
saving for the bad time is the most important part here , during the covid time I face these things very harshly , almost 3 nd half months without any such major works ...so it's better to save as much as possible during your good times
Wow, this is so accurate! I have been working as a freelancer for 2 years now, and I have just started to figure some of these things out. Most of the time, its like, what am I doing? should I go back to a 9-5 job? At what stage do I hire like minded people? Working alone sometimes can be daunting. Thank you for this video. It has really helped me get some clarity.
This is quite insightful, being a freelance graphic designer I can relate with all the points shared in the video. Sometimes I feel getting a corporate job will make life a bit easier...
Really appreciated the time and effort put into (well of all of your videos) but this one in particular. It is always helpful to hear someone that has personally experienced the journey and then communicates that in a way that's really easy to follow and tangible to understand. You mentioned in the first step (Jack Of All Trades) about searching for specifics on the various facets of freelancing such as negotiating, finances, marketing, and the actual design. I'm curious if you or anyone along their journey would be willing to share some resources in these specific areas. I've just graduated from University and am starting my journey into the world of freelancing, so anything and everything would help! Thanks for the great vid!
I have my own company and i can agree on every single point. Ity really isn't for everyone. The one gripe i have with it as i can take doing taxes... lack oif security etc. But what really gets me is the fact you have to constantly search for new customers. Sure, you will have some reoccuring customers but one day they will just stop ordering. You need a turnover of customers so you are stuck in a endless cycle as if you were searching for a job. It simply never ends. And also, forget 8-5 work hours. You will work a lot, especially at the start.
I am currently going through this change of being a freelance designer and my God the challenge feels like a huge mountain that I have literally no other choice but to climb or die trying. I think I would like to join your community.
You can check th Discord link in the description. And keep going with your journey, but research and study how to be a better freelancer and designer with each passing week
Great thing about freelancing is that you can get into it a little at a time. Slowly pick up some projects here and there and have a full-time for more secure finance until you can get enough work to focus on it completely
Excellent video, spot on. I find either having a drought of work or far too much to also be a big challenge. Most designers in my experience aren’t good at selling themselves - I know I’m not. Or managing four clients who all have an urgent last minute deadline all in the same week and staying sane whilst working 18 hour days to get it done!
Thanks for your insight into this field, I really appreciate it. the truth is no field is actually easy but with persistence I believe we can all attain a certain level of mastery. I love your videos sir and I'll continue to listen to your amazing ideas.
I looked online archives with old PC-magazine of the mid-late 90's and 2000's magazines. "Modern magazines" look like garbage made by children at school. although the "old magazines" had "photoshop 3.05" "illustrator 5.5" "free hands 5" and "quark 3.32" and "postcript 1 on raster processors. no transparency, no multi-step undo, no scripts ... I was shocked!
Everything said in this video is so important. When I was at university I would tell the other students if they were good or not? They asked why I did this and my reply was that when I leave I will be starting my own company and employing them! I used to have my own manufacturing company so i had a heads up on the real world. Ever wonder when the next order is coming or will I pay the rent and wages?
I was an IT Helpdesk Tech & Admin then I taught myself web dev and now Im Improving my graphic design skills, I hope I have enough skills and opportunity to survive out here
Thanks for the video which was very useful which I’ve been freelancing for over 10 years and YES you are absolutely right about all of what’s expected to become a freelancer and honestly it’s worth all the time and sacrifice to build your business than someone else. Love the work and keep putting out video bro 😎 #loyalfan #graphicdesigner
I took a full time job a few years back after being a freelancer for a number of years. The office job can be a drag but it definitely has its benefits in terms of security etc.. now when & IF I take on any outside work its only gonna be for something worth while to me creatively since it’s no longer about the money.. which is wonderful as long as I stay true to this.. I want to be able to flex my muscles and take on projects I enjoy if I’m doing it in my off time… only issue is most of the time I run into the same old same old with clients and it just becomes more stress in my day to day. Some of it is on me for ignoring red flags and hoping for the best but.. damn I’d love more cool gigs with clients that trust in my talents/skills/knowledge and don’t just turn into the same crap I deal with at work and that I used to put up with as a freelancer the good old “we needed this yesterday…” (when I was brought on way way after the fact of it being behind) “we know our logo/visual identity/yes using 6 typefaces on this design and know it is bad and we are open to a new direction.. but then just ends up… “we need you to work within the current style & match the last design (even tho we know it’s bad and even had complaints that it looked amateur..” & then you try to help them push in a better direction when they said they were open to pushing things a bit.. and they reject your work.. & then the time I’ve invested of my own personal time feels wasted.. I get enough of this type of crap in the day job. I’d love to work on more freelance work but there tends to be such a lack of understanding with a lot of clients I’ve seen this for years in freelance and my full time job.. in any event taking on freelance work now usually has the effect of making me go.. ya know what? My full time office job isn’t so bad after all.. and you know what else? Watching CZcams vids about how you should be working for yourself with your dream clients no longer depresses me.. like I’ve failed as a designer for having an office job with benefits.. I got myself a brand new house (during covid none the less!) & now rather than living in a one bedroom apartment for the 10+ years as a freelancer.. scrounging for money.. trying to prove myself to clients.. to myself etc.. and taking on work with blehgggg clients just to scrape by.. is a thing I do not miss.
The way it used to work was that a designer would work in a design agency or team for most of their career, and then go into freelancing later in life. I think it's probably the safer option for sure.
Great video! I'm starting right now as a freelancer, after 7 years working for different companies. At the beginning, I thought the most treaky part would be finding clients... And well, actually for me, I find difficult stopping myself in the work, so I don't loose too much resting time. I hope learning to do this better with time. About the security, well. I'm in Spain, where the taxes are a little high. But we have social security which is excellent.
Thanks for this video. Can you please guide how one should set the goals to grow graphics design skills as a freelancer? Should one practice for certain number of hours daily to learn advanced things to improve themselves? Also, at what point, do you suggest to set goals for learning new skills/software as a freelancer graphics designer?
I'm really curious right now. How do you create these text animations for your videos? After Effects or Premiere Pro... I feel like creating these animation for all your videos is really a lot and commendable. How do you do it?
Thank you for your videos, so far have been very informative. Do you think you could do one video about a graphic design contract? Thank you for your time and videos!
Hey, nice video it was very helpful (also liked the design and transitions 😁)! I am considering doing freelance on the side, I just have one question - What exactly were you referring to when you said its not for people with some mentality/habits
Some people aren't mentally equipped with working on their own. Others cannot handle that kind of pressure. It's simply a matter of knowing if that sort of lifestyle suits your personality
Hey and thanks for the comment. You can try searching in CZcams 'Satori Graphics clients' or 'Satori Graphics jobs' and I probably have a few videos on it
5:49 - 6:35 this basically nails any comment I was going to make. It’s risky but it’s impossible to go back to a ‘job’ as you’ll just make more money. Problem is you can never be sure more will arrive each month so you never feel like you can spend it. Also One crappy year and you can’t move house for 3 more years or the bank will not want to lend you the money.
I want to be a freelance, but I'm scared about the none security so much! Should to have a second job or something until the freelancer career have a stability?.. :(
Yes and no. There are tiers of clients. Some clients will only pay $50,000 for a logo, some will want to pay $5,000, some will want to pay $500. You just need to find your way into the upper tiers of clientele work
Study marketing, get your own website, work on social media, and be on at least 3 freelancing platforms. Also look at your work against other designers. Ask yourself, what can you offer that is different
Freelancing is tough but not impossible, that's the reason you can't just rely on single sources of income. You should learn different skill set to survive and you should start it by getting a job to know things and build network to get project after your job!!
Hi. I live in Sweden and recently I lost my job and this is my chance to work with what I was always interested. I'm 50 years old and is maybe too late to go to school. No company will give me a job without a diploma and experience, so my only choice is to start my own business. I wont to work with social media graphic design for companies. I wondering what you know about that and what I need to know and best way to learn . Best regards
Hi there. Really sorry to hear about you losing your job! If you want to seriously venture into graphic design as a business, first you need to have the basics understood such as the design principles (search these on CZcams and Google). You then need to practice your skills, look around at what what designers right are deadening, and try to see how they have used design principles to convey a message. I would also pick up a few books on business, branding and social media. Graphic design is all about conveying a message to a specific group of people through visual media. You will need to demonstrate you have skills and the ability to provide value to an employer or client by having a portfolio, so that's also something you need to work towards. I wish you all the best!
freelance designer here for 12 years. i was lucky i found a company that offers security and allowed me to do freelance jobs. luck played a part. get good so you dont have to spend all your time for freelance and you would have time for a creative company.
For a lot of Asia yes. For now anyway.. If places like SE Asia want to become fully developed, the governments will need to start taking everyone. I lived on Thailand and Laos for 10 years, loved it down there
Depends how much free time you have away from your job, and how committed you are. Study everything about freelancing online, and thren try to see if it's even possible with your schedule
@@SatoriGraphics I think it's possible, because I work 8 hours and I still have some time for it, but I want to someday be able to work at home as a freelance graphic designer and stop at the job I'm currently doing

Some people aren't mentally equipped with working on their own. Others cannot handle that kind of pressure. It's simply a matter of knowing if that sort of lifestyle suits your personality
Hi, I really like your videos and learning many things from you. Thank you so much for sharing.
Do you have any Courses about Graphic Designing?
First in a long time... Finally 😁
Second according to CZcams unfortunately
@@SatoriGraphics Nooooo.... 😅
Could you please make a video about Visual Language/ Brand Extension? Would love to hear your process! Thankyou!
Hi, great channel!
About this topic.. could you give guidance, how to find work? where?
Hey and thanks for the comment.
You can try searching in CZcams 'Satori Graphics clients' or 'Satori Graphics jobs' and I probably have a few videos on it
5:49 - 6:35 this basically nails any comment I was going to make. It’s risky but it’s impossible to go back to a ‘job’ as you’ll just make more money. Problem is you can never be sure more will arrive each month so you never feel like you can spend it. Also One crappy year and you can’t move house for 3 more years or the bank will not want to lend you the money.
Can you make a video explaining the skewed vision syndrome? It'll be much appreciated, thank you
Do you animate your videos by yourself?
I noticed that animation in this video is a bit more complex than before ( compared to a few months ago )
4:26 & 6:15 Curious to know why you used a floating text "hiring FC (insurance agent)" Love your tutorials!!
Thank you!
Is working a part time job for instance, and being a part time freelance designer a good option? So you at least have some steady income
That's totally fine of course. For some people that would make more sense
I want to be a freelance, but I'm scared about the none security so much! Should to have a second job or something until the freelancer career have a stability?.. :(
I think it's just a case of saving money away for emergencies, and having a plan B and C
Thank you
Thanks!
They charge only 5 doller... That's the biggest problem... They spoil design career
Yes and no. There are tiers of clients. Some clients will only pay $50,000 for a logo, some will want to pay $5,000, some will want to pay $500. You just need to find your way into the upper tiers of clientele work
Sir how to be patient on finding clients?
I m on fiverr last 2 years and I have 0 clients . But how to find ? 🤔
Study marketing, get your own website, work on social media, and be on at least 3 freelancing platforms. Also look at your work against other designers. Ask yourself, what can you offer that is different

I really wish my life was different in being freelancer but it is a long and challenging world
It is difficult to find an internship in the area. the way is to freelance. Thanks! 💫
Too serious for me, I was just trying to get some bucks from a part time job. 🙂
lol everyone has their own agenda and path, yours is simply fine too
Thing is, there is way too many Graphic designers out there. Most people wont succeed in this business.
Freelancing is tough but not impossible, that's the reason you can't just rely on single sources of income. You should learn different skill set to survive and you should start it by getting a job to know things and build network to get project after your job!!
I agree 100%
Hi.
I live in Sweden and recently I lost my job and this is my chance to work with what I was always interested. I'm 50 years old and is maybe too late to go to school. No company will give me a job without a diploma and experience, so my only choice is to start my own business. I wont
to work with social media graphic design for companies.
@@SatoriGraphics Thank you so much.
freelance designer here for 12 years. i was lucky i found a company that offers security and allowed me to do freelance jobs. luck played a part. get good so you dont have to spend all your time for freelance and you would have time for a creative company.
Insightful and useful points
Please name the fonts that you have used in this video.

Thnx :)

I'm hoping to break into freelance but I don't know how to find clients? Do you have any advice?
Taxes are not a big problem in Asian countries
For a lot of Asia yes. For now anyway.. If places like SE Asia want to become fully developed, the governments will need to start taking everyone. I lived on Thailand and Laos for 10 years, loved it down there
Hi @satori . Can you please share which font you are using in your videos?
hi. thanks for video. so what is your sugestion for someone that wantted to be freelancer but did no how can start it?
I am a graphic designer and also a fresh graduate, please how can I start a freelance work ?
The link to join the Discord server is expired
Thanks.. I'll change it now
@@SatoriGraphics thank you ^^
Even if you're with a company, it's good to save money each month. Companies go bust, taking pensions & what not with them.
Possibly, sometimes.
Hey,i have a job and i want to be part time graphic designer what do you think?
Depends how much free time you have away from your job, and how committed you are. Study everything about freelancing online, and thren try to see if it's even possible with your schedule
@@SatoriGraphics I think it's possible, because I work 8 hours and I still have some time for it, but I want to someday be able to work at home as a freelance graphic designer and stop at the job I'm currently doing
@@SatoriGraphics but I'm not sure about the money from freelance work can finance my life.
As a graphic designer for the past 3 years. It wasn't easy. Upgrading myself everyday to stay out of the crowd.
do you do mentorship’s ?
I wish I had the time to do that, but unfortunately I don't
I have a stable well-paid, easy to do corpo job. Graphic designing and AI is my hobby. Freelancing is not for me.
I have the skill but not how to get clients
You should try focusing on marketing and social media
The discord invite link isn't working!
Should be fixed now
what is the font u use in the video?
the blocky one
Try logodesignprocess.com/fonts
@@SatoriGraphics thx for answering
