Established in 1921 by Greek immigrant Christ George, The Very Best in Pottstown Pennsylvania has been a staple of the community ever since. Known for their amazing hotdogs (as originally that’s all they sold), their menu has expanded and changed over the last 100+ years to include hamburgers, hoagies, cheese steaks, and in 1924 the first of Mrs. Smith’s pies. The shop has only ever changed hands three times and has only ever shut down for about four years when a recession forced the doors to close in 2015. Today however the popular hotdog joint is back up and running thanks to Josh Souders who fixed up the place and started serving delicious food to locals & travels once again. The entire store still has a classic 1950’s feel featuring the original vintage fixtures of wood paneled walls, bright orange tables, a long lunch counter with matching orange stools, and a mini-jukebox in each both. But lets not forget the newest addition, a full arcade in the back with retro 80s & 90s arcade cabinets, pinball machines, and it’s own “The Very Best Arcade” neon sign. So take a trip back in time, order a hotdog, play some music on the jukebox, pop some quarters into an arcade game, and have the most enjoyable meal of you life as so many other have done for over one hundred years now.

Thanks for visiting our town! Come back in the evenings when High Street is hopping with folks patronizing our very good restaurants, beer gardens and live shows at the Steel River Playhouse. You'll see a very alive High Street. I'm a little confused how you said there's "shadiness" that goes on in Pottstown...but yet you said you don't come out to Pottstown too often. I've lived here for 30 years and am happy for the resurgence in our downtown and glad to see that visitors are finally seeing (and enjoying) all the great businesses we have in town.
I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to offend. Perhaps downtown Pottstown / High Street has gotten better over the years. Ive had one too many friends get robbed at gun point down there in the past. It’s why I started to stay away from that area.

Trip down memory lane! I grew up in Pottstown. Rode the bus to middle school, about 3 blocks up the hill from the New York Store... where everyone shopped. I stopped at TVB a few times a week for a hot chocolate after I'd miss the bus home. I can't believe they have the old jukeboxes at the tables! The block your video game store is on had "The Slack Shack", where we'd get Levis or hip huggers! Early 70's! Sporting goods store across the street, Stationary store, Woolworth, McCrory's, so many good shops...

Glad you profiled The Very Best, as it is a real gem. Not only has the owner maintained the vintage charm, but added that great curation of classic video games. I think you proved the point that though you shaded Pottstown just a little bit at the beginning, you noted a lot of what makes the downtown so cool and you ended up very pleasantly surprised at discovering what Pottstown has to offer - and I hope all visitors have the same experience!
I can remember cruising high St. in my 69 Camaro.
Man, this was way better than actually buying one because you can do that any day. This way you got to play one still or more than one and you got an amazingly delicious hotdog! Like I say all the time I love places like this that are living time capsules so amazingly cool, thanks for sharing!

We just moved to Pottstown. I started taking photos of the gorgeous houses and putting them on an IG account. It maybe shady but it’s just got so much potiential. Love the very best.
I agree. I don’t necessarily agree with “gentrification”, but it would be nice to see the whole area cleaned up and brought back to it’s former glory.

Surprised that Very Best is still in business. Who maintains all those vintage pinball games and jukebox to keep them in working condition?? What is status of the old Pottstown Mercury newspaper building?

I never eaten there. Other than A&W that's been in my town since 1950's. Not much retro eats here.
