Works for making gaskets too
I came here to say this.
What noooo wayyyyy
@@troymeceyyep, me too.. Or paper templates to transfer to gasket material, at least.
I've made many gaskets that way.
Same
Humble Mechanic never lets me down
Dudes awesome
Old tricks like this shouldn’t be lost to history it’s cool to see the younger guys use the old tricks they have learned from the previous generations
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it
This is what the Internet was invented for not to watch porn or smoke pot and watch TV show marathon reruns
@1MicrosoftCPU did you ever see the history of the internet?
It was basically built because of porn. The money, the infrastructure, the speed, the video quality. It was a massive influence, and without it we wouldnt have come so far so fast.
The internet is a great tool but sex sells and the internet is a perfect example of that.
@@1MicrosoftCPUCan be equally true for both
We learn the old tricks from the older cats!! And then we can pass to the next gen.
Dude, that trick is older than the dinosaurs.😂
right
No one cares
As a dinosaur I can indeed confirm I have always know this.
@@MrAlanevo as a young Tyrannosaurus I didn’t know this yet
@@doughboy4681 I care! I've been thinking about the dinosaur and engines for my whole life! I care so much about all of it dammit!! Can't believe the amount of caring within my soul!! Care so much!! I do!!!
That shit in around since the 1960s, you buy a sheet of gasket paper in different thickness & make it
That’s how my dad taught me to make gaskets.
*1900's. My great grandfather taught my grandfather who taught me.😊
I've been making gaskets and painting stuff like that since the 60s, and still doing it. Too bad my grandsons are aspiring mechanics! I could pass on a boat load of knowledge.
My dad showed me this when I helped him rebuild a Chevy 350, I was only 10 at the time.
He’s 90 now and still spends all day in the garage!
Your whole “what, no way!” journey will pave the way for many generations old and new. An icon to many, a hero to the rest..
Heh, I would be surprised if even 10% of those are actually new to him, but he takes the edge out of it by pretending to be as new to it as we are.
I do love the approach of being as ignorant as the rest of us. Makes it feel so much better to learn, and he vets really good life hacks rather than desperately trying to come up with things.
I miss the the old way. "no way, fuck sakes😊"
Yeah "no way, bull spit!"
YEA BUDDY!!!! Glad that tip helped!
Is that you bro aha
I heard the voice and was like “what!? nooo waay thats charles” 😂

Heard the cans knew it was you.
We used to always make our own gaskets with sheet or roll of gasket material and a ballpeen hammer
Sometimes just thinking about stuff, makes you think about stuff. That's my life motto.
Why go across town when you can go across the hall. That’s my life motto.
Why stop working to go to the bathroom. wear a diaper! Shit works good

Humble Mechanic is the man! His videos are fun to watch and very informative when it comes to VWs.
Love Jamie’s comic relief when they’re working together😂
@@jonathanballard5195 got to make sure to pay for the Jamie package to make that happen
We made permanite gaskets this way.
You beat me... 37 minutes lol
Got me by an hour on this comment. I still do it.
yeah i have a 1958 impala good luck finding gaskets right, well i buy gasket material and do the same thing
@the101dad so do you follow the same process.. i assume so .. like on the intake side cut out the bolt holes and just hammer it ?
That also works for making gaskets and cardboard templates (just to mark it)
If you need to make a gasket in a pinch, and don’t have any material around, cereal boxes work too.
I been doing this for 40 years. A guy in the business for 40 years before me should me this trick. We just bought gasket material and made our own. Before OEM
I make gaskets that way with a ball peen. Red rubber & non-asbestos gasket.
I learned that trick from my grandfather when I was 8, and I'm 64. I was a navy boiler technician. We didn't carry pre-made gaskets. Just big rolls of gasket material.
Learned from my Dad also at 8, about 60 now
My dad taught me this for gasket making, use it for forklifts all the time
You can use a metal hammer if you're very careful and don't hit it too hard. It doesn't take much force to break the tape along the edge.
Yeah, for sure you can. As you said, as long as you don't go hammer time on it, it'll be fine. Be easier and quicker than a soft faced hammer or rubber mallet.
"It's stuff like this I should think about" golden wisdom right there.
For the guys saying about gaskets here's another trick for you: To punch holes use appropriate sized sockets and a hammer.
If your socket doesn't cut through you get a perfect imprint and finish it with a cutter.
I've done both. Works great. I ended up using a cheap socket that I sharpened to make the holes.
It's crazy how people are amazed by old school stuff that our grandparents thought us
fr... i was making gaskets like this 40 years ago as a kid on my go karts and stuff
It’s crazy how people think everybody had a grandpa to teach them this stuff.
Thats how you make gaskets from Vellumoid as well.
The fact that you getting stoked gets me stoked is rad man. Picked up some cool tricks from your posts. Thanks for all these clips. Hope all is well man. 🤙
Learned this from a old welder fellow while cutting gaskets for a tractor built in 1919
Humble mechanic is the freaking goat. Never let me down what so ever. Any vw and audi fix its / tips and tricks I need, he is the go to.
Learned to do this 50 years ago in the Navy to make paper and cork gaskets
I learned that in high school 1985!
We made paper gaskets for valve covers
3 generations in my mechanic family knowing this. Literally older than my Grandpa..
Genius. Love the old tricks!
I tell you… day by day the internet is more educational then school in most ways
That's probably one of the best tricks I've ever seen!!
I absolutely love this guys “what no waaay”😂
I love your shit my man. Dont change. Where the hell did "What no waaaaay. Fuck's sake." go?
Humble mechanic is the man!
Thanks for the videos man Canadians are great
Been doing this forever. A old timer taught me this when I was about 14. Pretty cool trick and comes in handy a lot
Learnt this in my engine rebuilding class back in 2016! Works well
I figured this out when I first started working on engines back when I was 20.
Learned this trick for gaskets when I was 13. Thanks Mr Ottoman.
I learnt this in high school 20 years ago. Our mechanic class teacher told us to do this when making our “ makeshift gaskets” smart for making exact shapes
I learned that technique in grade 9 auto shop back in 1988.
Dude, we learnt this in basic Motor Engineering back when I was at school in the 80's.
Eric The Car Guy also gave us this tip way back when he was working on the Fairmont.
Humble Mechanic a voice for radio and a face for TV.
I've been making gaskets that way since Grandad taught me in the 70s.
I'm stationary engineer, when we used to do the gaskets on an absorption chiller, that's exactly how we used to do it.
Evidently I'm blessed that I'm from Georgia cuz this dude is constantly amazed by common knowledge from down here...
Dad and I used the same trick to make gaskets for old cars and tractors. We had some fine grained cork composite gasket material that worked wonderfully with that process.
Use foam earplugs to fill bolt holes.
Works for removing gaskets too, if its baked on just light taps and smash it a bit and it will just fall off
You can do the same thing by running the edge of the metal of the screwdriver around the surface cutting the masking tape,
Using the round side of the metal on the screwdriver not the end
I spent HOURS cutting the gaskets for my airbox by hand to make sure they fit perfectly. And now I find out I could have done this? I have no words for this feeling...
I figured that out on my own prepping a pair of cylinder heads for paint. I started just rubbing along the edges with the handle of a screwdriver then found out I could do it faster with a rubber mallet. So yea it really works.
That works for relatively sharp edges. If rounded, use a file.
I used to make gaskets this way. I used a brass hammer as well. On cast iron I would use a steel ballpeen hammer. The ballpeen end came in real handy on the holes.
I learned that years ago in the military to make gaskets. I’ve made more than one gasket out of a manilla folder!!! And yes….I’ve used gasket material too!!!
Yep, been doing it with gaskets awhile... i used to keep spent shell casings of various calibers in a box to punch bolt holes with
Humble mechanic knows his stuff!
I was taught 30yrs ago to cut gasket paper, back when mechanics werent fitters
Those sharp corners are difficult with this method, you can also use the edge of a smooth screwdriver or whatever and run along the line as well
Works for making gaskets too, just use file folders.
Wow, you must have cleaned your hammer draw, baby steps one at a time 😅
I just love his Catchphrase “What no way” I’ll bet money he’s Canadian
Had to show off the 540 everyone helped pay for. Nicely done.haha
When I went to school for auto services, they taught us how to do that when painting blocks
did this with gasket material...ball bearing tapped in holes make clean circles
The edges are sharp as hell. That's where those cuts on your hands come from.
Works great. Did this on my valve covers
Not only is it so much quicker but also prevents accidentally gouging something that you’re not supposed to, or your hand, whichever comes first!
Works for cutting cordage as well.
You can also use the shaft of a screwdriver and just press firmly and run it around the edges. Slot faster than tapping with the mallet
You can also scrape the blade around the edges and get the same effect but this is much easier if you have a rubber mallet
Works for roofing underlayment around plumbing pipes
This guy knows it works, if he built that engine he know how sharp machined edges are!
Same process works for making paper gaskets as well.
My mechanic father would buy rebuild kits for older cars that just has one big sheet of cork gasket material to make new gaskets for the rebuild you were doing. This was the common method my dad learned in diesil/gasoline mechanic courses he took in the 60's to become a mechanic. Its actually much older than that and was the ONLY way to get new gaskets for rebuilds and repairs from around 1900-1950 until aftermarket parts suppliers popped up after ww2. You can still get a roll or sheet of cork/paper gasket matetial at the parts store today and make your own with a ball peen hammer. ✌️
I'm glad I knew this one already. Used this to make gaskets on triplex pumps
No. You already a great technician ❤❤❤
You can also make gaskets using the same method.
I helped by father rebuild a 1985 Ford 302 when i was 9. I was so excited to paint it Ford blue. I learned about this trick all those years ago, and I'm in my forties now and I'm stunned how many car guys don't know this.
Hey, I think I saw my long-lost screwdriver in there!!😂😂 Got any phillips heads???😂
That was the first trick I learned when I was 12 back in 2001, with cereal box cardboard to make IAC valve gaskets
Man just had his first day of mechanic school
I’ve made my gaskets in the field like that for over 2 decades, works great
An old timer taught me to make gaskets like that also. If you tap around the inside of the holes, it'll cut the holes perfectly
This may have already been mentioned, but actually a ballpeen hammer (using the rounded end) works MUCH better. One can cut out the WHOLE desired piece this way. Tapping lightly with the rounded end at the right angle along the edges will actually "cut out" the piece. This is how the old timers use to make gaskets all the time. Just keep tapping lightly enough, on the edges, until it starts to cut the gasket material. Works like a charm.
Old school mechanics have been doing that trick for years Also works when you use it to make gaskets
I usually use a pencil, a ratchet handle, extension, screwdriver. Never tried a mallet.
"What, no way" is so iconic
Do it all the time to line up holes when making brackets or templates as well
I've always thought it was amazing when people find out about tricks and stuff when most of the tricks they learn have been around for long long time some for few decades but most people just recently find out about them, just goes to show you that its kinda standard for some people and then others not so much.
Sometimes, these videos are entertaining and maybe help others. Most of the time, they hurt my head.
Learned this trick in 1984. Gasket material on the jug of my bultaco. 💯. Tap perforation💯🤷🏼♂️🤘.
That "no way" came straight from the heart
This works great for making gaskets from gasket material as well, do it all the time
Im glad i was taught this trick at a young age
You can also rub almost anything over the edges, too.
I never thought about it either. I used to paint houses so I didnt really have much use for painters tape. That's mainly for new construction/spraying. You don't spray walls that often because all the taping takes more time than spraying saves.
Easier way. Smother the stuff you dont want paint on in vasaline. Paint over it. Wipe it off after. Worked for engine shops for 11yrs. We always did that when painting heads. Obviously more important things you would still mask.
I picked this up painting at work, customer welments so I didn’t use a hammer, but the back side of the box knife will do the same. Weaken the tape takes time outta it.
This is why the internet can be a beautiful thing
