In recent years tourism to this part of Wales has exploded and its putting a lot of pressure on local infrastructure, many of the beaches are now inaccessible during school holidays due to large visitor numbers, it was a well kept secret in the past with Cornwall being the default go-to for most brits but that secret is now well and truly out.

There’s a monastery on the island and the gift shop sells a lot of their hand made goods. There’s a perfumery as well and a tea shop. My Dad was born in Tenby in 1914. He lived there till he was 12 and then they moved to a city in the Midlands. He hated it so much that he ran away back to Tenby and camped on the Rectory Field (now a car park) till he was found. His parents moved back to Tenby for their retirement. I went on holiday there every year from aged 1 to 19.
It is a wonderful and uplifting place. Dad's ashes are scattered off Giltar Point at the end of the South Beach. There is so much to see round Tenby and it also has the best Fish and Chip shops in the country! It also has the largest parish church in Wales where Robert Recorde is buried. Who he? You ask - he is the man who invented the equals (=) sign.

Have a caravan near Tenby and Live in Swansea with loads of space if you ever make it to Wales and need a free stay. Swansea is pretty much surrounded in amazing scenery being one of the greenest counties in the UK. Check out The Mumbles, Gower and just outside Swansea, the Brecon Beacons...oh and Joes Ice cream. As for South West Wales up to North Wales, there's just so much unspoilt quiet spaces. It is an un-appreciated gift to many living here at least in the summer. It's quite nice in the winter too!

Most of us in the UK stay in Bed and Breakfast Hotels when we visit the seaside. Small, cosy hotels with a welcoming landlady, often family run, that provide Bed, breakfast and often an evening meal, communal lounge and bar. People keep returning year after year because of the friendly more personal service. You'll find many to choose from in every seaside town.

I live in Tenby in my family's old house, retired here 15 years ago. I volunteer on St. Catherine's Island and I am on your video collecting the money at the bottom of the steps. Some questions you asked... How much are houses? Expensive! Tenby has been discovered by Londoners. The houses you see from the fort are more than £1 million each. There are cheaper houses but a lot are second homes or rented as AirBnB's so the cheapest are £250,000/350,000 plus. So to answer your second question there are plenty of places to stay and many hotels as well. The peak season is traditionally Easter to the end of September for visits but many people prefer staycations outside the season when Tenby is less crowded and prices are cheaper. If you come to Tenby come and say hello if you visit the fort.

If you do visit Tenby I highly recommend driving across to bosheston Lilly ponds. You can walk through the Lilly ponds and then there’s a stunning walk from there over the cliffs to barafundle bay. Its a 3 hour round trip walk/hike It’s hands down the most beautiful walk in south wales.
Also if you visit this area of the world. There’s a lovely castle in llansteffan, you can walk up to the castle and climb the spiral stairs to the top of the castle looking over the beach. It’s absolutely stunning and a must if you visit the area.

I lived there for a year and a bit in 2007 for about £50 a week. I am local though and had connections. Now Tenby is getting more attention, it becomes increasingly difficult for locals to buy a house etc. Most move away for employment as it is the arse end of nowhere with nothing outside of seasonal work for the young, and maybe the building trades for the homes of the rich who move there. Once gone, you can't get back unless you live in your parents house.

If indeed you have serious thoughts of moving to this area of Pembrokeshire (Sîr Penfro), then please remember that 30 percent of the area's people speak Welsh (Cymraeg) and that the town of Tenby is an anglicised abbreviation of the Welsh name Dinbych-y-Pysgod (Little fort of fishes). If you intend visiting Tenby, and Port Meirion, an inexpensive place to stay would be the university town of Aberystwyth, where student digs are rented out during the long vac. It is 70 miles north of Dinbych-y-Pysgod and 57 miles south of Portmeirion. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

About 40 years ago I rented the station masters house situated at the side of Lamphey station which then was a holiday let property. It's a request stop running from Swansea to Pembroke Dock a branch of the Wales West line. When I stayed there with my family of myself, my wife, and 5 children as a perk of staying at the property you could have free rail rides to Tenby. The guards would stop inter city trains along the route so we could get off to visit local castle's. I should think that this perk has long gone but it was fun seeing all the city passengers wondering what was happening when we off loaded or loaded onto the train from the middle of fields. I live in Devon which is very beautiful but this stretch of Wales can surpass even our outstanding county. If you stay here you will not be disappointed Wales is a beautiful country even just listening to the Welsh when they speak. Sorry they don't speak they sing. It's a wonderful country you will not be disappointed. p.s. there is a ruined monastery at Lamphey and if you can still rent it there was a ships window built into the wall of the cottage with a sailing boat set in a sea scape inside it. Go on google and put in Lamphey station it has a picture of the station and it cottage. We had a wonderful holiday there.

My wife and I love Tenby. We have been visiting for a few years and it is really great on many levels. Plenty of restaurants and eateries, beautiful beaches and walking and an ideal base to explore more of Pembrokeshire, which is (mostly) a beautiful part of Wales. The Pembrokeshire Coast Path is really beautiful. A visit to St Davids is a must see, and if you are interested in history then Pembroke Castle is worth a visit.
However, a few words of guidance. It gets very busy during the school holidays - late July through to the start of September ( book well ahead if you want to eat out). The weather can be quite variable, so come prepared for sun, rain, hot and cold. Our favourite time is early July. A boat trip out to Caldey Island is recommended - a monastery dating back 1,500 years, it is now mainly a nature reserve with red squirrels and other wildlife. It’s only a 20 minute boat ride from Tenby and makes for a lovely day out. For visitors from, for example, the US, please bear in mind that it is a 4-hour (plus!) drive to Tenby from the western fringes of London. We live in Surrey and we break our journey for lunch in Chepstow, which is a destination in itself. The M4 through South Wales can get very very busy so don’t expect to be driving at 70mph! It’s worth it though 😎
PS: If you can book It, we can recommend the Ocean Suite at the Atlantic Hotel - a well hidden gem.

There are gems like this all over, like Scarborough it's very hilly and that no doubt deters those who don't like walking or hills... Lincolnshire is flat, that's why it's popular... I'm guessing Wales has other flatter coastline which is far more popular too...

Seals and sea lions are marine mammals called 'pinnipeds' that differ in physical characteristics and adaptations. Sea lions are brown, bark loudly, "walk" on land using their large flippers and have visible ear flaps. Seals have small flippers, wriggle on their bellies on land, and lack visible ear flaps.

One thing to remember about Wales is that they have have a lot of rain and storms coming from the west over the sea, that photo must have been a very rare day when it was clear and sunny, We go camping all over the country at the dryest time of the year and the two times we've had bad weather were both in Wales, I lost a tent that completely collapsed in gale force winds and another with broken pole section. Even the Lake District was better and that's supposedly renowned for a lot of rain. ☹️☹️

Love Debbie's 'We can buy that'. I'd definitely pick end of May/June for your trip over - the weather is likely to be good & it doesn't get dark till gone 10.30pm in Scotland, perfect for sitting by the side of a Loch. All the gardens & parks will be in full bloom. Yes, the sea is cold, it's always cold. When booking accommodation don't overlook Caravan Holiday Parks - you can rent a self-catering static caravan/lodge for a good price and within easy reach of lots of stuff to see and do.
