More Power + The Best Fuel Economy | Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid First Drive

  • It turns out that sometimes, being powered by a Prius powertrain is good. Case in point: the new Corolla Cross Hybrid shares its new eAWD hybrid system with the new Prius. Although rated for 42 MPG, we managed to average 50 MPG without trying terribly hard. Highway numbers should fall closer to 40 MPG, but any way you slice it, the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is an interesting alternative to the best-selling Crosstrek. It offers more power and significantly better fuel economy in a more boxy package.

      @Steven Strain Even when comparing the non-hybrid options, the Toyota Corolla Cross wins over the Honda HRV. Corolla Cross has 169 hp and 151 lb ft of torque. HRV has 158 hp and 138 lb ft of torque. Furthermore the Corolla Cross has the unique & superior Corolla CVT with a physical first gear that gives you faster acceleration off the line and better reliability. HRV has an old school CVT with no physical first gear.

      Been driving a CCH since December, 2,700 miles. Great car but I'm averaging 36.5 MPG, not 42. Second, the fuel tank is only 10.8 gallons. My practical tank is only 8 gallons with a range of 288 miles. That's not very good and I find myself buying gas almost as often as my old Crosstrek. I thought I could get used to this but I was wrong. A 14 gallon tank would have been a home run.

      @@kenhoward3512 Toyota is partially to blame too for keeping new car production low. Toyota has come together with Ford, GM, Nissan etc. and pledged to keep new car production low. This allows them to keep prices high and save millions of dollars by not having to pay cash rebates and marketing costs. Due to low production, less cars are sent to dealerships which forces dealers to sell these cars at higher prices so that they can still make a profit.

It will take a long, steep hill near me at 55 MPH without high revs from the engine, something none of my three hybrids before it could do. Got the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE with blackout badges and love it!! 40-50 MPG depending on drive. Comfortable, easy to drive, pretty fast, lots of headroom, all the bells and whistles, adaptive cruise control is amazing, breaks are amazing, heated seats, sunroof, blind spot, lift gate, AWD, pretty decent audio, apple CarPlay, navigation, nice seats, and just an amazing small SUV. Traded my 2 year old BMW X1 and never looked back. Happy to be back with Toyota for sure! This is not a family SUV, there’s not a lot of leg room in the second row but for a couple it’s perfect. So much better than the “ever expanding RAV4 “ which keeps getting bigger in size and in price. This is like “mini RAV4 meets mini Highlander”! Finally a small hybrid SUV from Toyota! I've been waiting for this one. I liked the idea behind the original Corolla Cross being lower cost and slightly smaller than a RAV4 (I like driving slightly smaller vehicles in general and am in the market for a practical CUV...), but reading peoples' experiences with the 169 horsepower engine put me off. Hopefully the additional horsepower with the hybrid electric engine/motor makes up for that. The fuel economy is extremely nice, too!

    Great review as usual. I would love to see results for these hybrids in more congested/city environments to see what the real world mpg/range would be. I'm older people now and my needs have changed. We currently have a 2016 Outback w/2.5 and CVT when we we working it easily averaged 17 commuting/errands runs but now my wife is lucky she goes more than 6 miles for shopping/errands and of course in hot weather the a/C is full blast giving her around 11mpg typically. On the highway it still easily gets 33mpg but that amount of driving is greatly diminished these days so I want something that would still get big mpg with our use these days and since my Spark EV is awesome it's size is too small for her comfort meanwhile I'm 6' and she's 5'2 and I love it. Anyway, it seems an efficient AWD hybrid may be in our future and since the dealers are soaking folks for a Maverick Hybrid this car seems like a great option. BTW, your review of the Spark EV helped me decide on one and coming up on 4yrs of ownership I'm still very happy with it so your reviews are a great source for my research on vehicles, thanks!

  • @markmiller3279
    @markmiller3279 Před rokem +6

    I think the Corolla Cross is pretty dull, but in this form it's just about the perfect modern economy car for most buyers. Aside from a lackluster interior, I can't see anything significantly wrong with this, and even the interior is acceptable for a relatively inexpensive car, and would have been premium twenty years ago.
    If Toyota doesn't sell massive numbers it's because they either aren't making enough or haven't figured out how to market them. For most people this will be just as functional as a RAV4 Hybrid, and save money. It's not as if the RAV4 interior is any nicer or much roomier.

    • @Ithirahad
      @Ithirahad Před rokem +2

      Honestly the main pain point for marketing is the name. Whatever this thing is, it isn't a Corolla. It aims at a subtly different market segment and does not have any of the Corolla's limitations.

Minor downsides- memorize the climate controls because otherwise you need a magnifying glass to see them while driving ( : Also any weight over about 100 pounds in the cargo area definitely affects the steering feel in a negative way.
