  • Thomas Wooden Railway products had a bad year in 1999. Not to say the items are bad but the products they released that year failed in terms of staying power in the line. Let's see what items were released that year and how long they lasted.

The NW Brakevan (also known as the Spiteful Brakevan) lasted from 2001 to 2005 in Europe. Likely he was more popular in that country because he was a British brake van, and aside from Toad, the only one released for the Thomas Wooden Railway line. Most of the time, Thomas Wooden Railway had the Sodor Line Caboose, which was an American caboose.

Scruffey was another character who lasted longer in the line. Maybe it was because for the majority of the time they were out Europe was receiving Brio Thomas Wooden Railway products? I'm not so sure but it is interesting looking at items that lasted longer in Europe.

i'm in the small margin of people who adore the 1999-2001 stuff.
i wish that lasted longer. had the plastic funnels and coal of the newer stuff, yet it still had the simplicity of the older stuff.

I’ve always really liked the stop and go station too. So simple, but it just works. I think the reason you felt it was around longer is because it was in other stuff other than the Stop and Go Figure 8 set. It was in the roundhouse set and the advanced figure eight expansion pack. Then there was the repainted version for the Thomas-Saurus Rex set, and then there was even a Mattel edition in their version of the Tidmouth Sheds Deluxe Set

pretty cool video man, never really thought about the "worst" classic year of wooden railway
doesn't make it bad by any means, but still something interesting to think about

Thank you! I agree that the worst classic year is far better than the best Mattel year. You were still getting plenty of interesting sets and a large assortment of characters and rolling stock. I feel like whatever new items put out this year weren't as popular with consumers as years before but you also had the rest of whatever was still available that year to fall back on.

Toys of characters that are exclusive to The Railway Series was risky to make. Many kids most likely grew up watching the TV Show and not the books. So they probably weren't interested in the characters that never appeared in the show before; there are a few exceptions like Culdee, Mike, and D199.
I know when I was a little I was confused when I saw Neil, Catherine, Wilbert, D199, and Flying Scotsman. And I was very confused with the first version of Culdee.

    • @LNERFlyingScotsman
      @LNERFlyingScotsman  Před měsícem +1

I agree! While it is cool to have them made it is risky. When I became aware of the characters I needed for my collection which was around 2002 many of the RWS characters were retired. Ivo Hugh was around but I always got something else instead of him likely because I knew those characters from the show. I think the first character from the RWS I got was D199 when he was re-introduced in 2005 because I thought he was cool to have a yellow face and new for the year. Eventually for it became less of characters from the show and more about characters that were missing from my collection so I picked up Frank and Wilbert for example because I knew they were released before and retired already.

The 1999 yearbook was my introduction to the Thomas Wooden Railway, and it's a shame that most of these products didn't last long; I got the Cargo car, the Spiteful Brake Van and my younger brother got Flying Scotsman.

    I highly disagree!!! 😡
While yes, there are a few duds like Catherine, but 1999 was overall better than 2017-2021 that’s for sure!

I wish they had made all the culdee fell engines and Catherine better. Wouldn’t have been popular but would have been cool and not much effort other than domes and side tanks.

Neil is actually one of my favourite TWR items and the spiteful brakevan is the only realistic brakevan other than maybe toad but he’s a bit dodgy

I feel like the orange cargo car with green cargo was made so that Cranky had more cargo to pick up. I think it just didn’t last long because it didn’t seem very inspired.

I don't know why they didn't just make other characters from Season 5. Would it of hurt them to make a Derek, Bertram or the Horrid Lorries during 1999? Or they could've made road vehicles they hadn't made yet like Bulgy, George, or Caroline

I feel that new items for 1999 are more gimmicky than 1996-1998 because Roy Wilson was slowly leaving his executive job at learning curve

    • @LNERFlyingScotsman

I have the five truck Thomas, but my Thomas has a funnel the same one as my 2002 Thomas. Also the Sodor coal station isn’t a bad set, sure it ain’t perfect but still looks neat.

Yes by 1999 all engines had those funnels. My tired Thomas is from the year before when it was released in the Thomas and Bertie's Great Race pack. I didn't buy the 5 car pack, but I did come across all the pieces to make it.

To be honest I don't really like wooden railway, I mean I can recognize it for it's worth but, you can't give me a block of wood painted like maroon or something and say look! Its Arthur, 0-4-0 Edward is a creature that can only live in my nightmares, Terence, Thumper, & Post-93 Mavis cant go through tighter curves, 1996 Culdee as a whole, the list goes on. In my opinion wooden railway is just a conceptually flawed line, and in my personal opinion Trackmaster will always be in the superior line, but at the end of the day, all Thomas toy lines are flawed. (Sorry that my essay of a hottake was specifically published on your video)
