  • City’s quest for a second successive Champions League crown was ended by Real Madrid who secured a dramatic 4-3 penalty shoot-out win at the Etihad after the sides had drawn 1-1 after 120 minutes and 4-4 on aggregate in our quarter-final second leg.
In what was a pulsating, tense, action filled encounter befitting of these two European powerhouses, it was Real who had struck first, Rodrygo firing Carlo Ancelotti’s side into a 12th minute lead.
City though took the game to the 14-times European champions, seeing Erling Haaland hit the bar and carving out a plethora of chances.
Our pressure finally told 14 minutes from time when Kevin De Bruyne smashed home from close range after Antonio Rudiger had failed to clear substitute Jeremy Doku’s cross.

Back in 2020 when Jose Mourinho was managing Tottenham, a journalist asked him during post-match after Tottenham defeated Man City 2-0: "City controlled the ball for 90 minutes, and the possession rate was more than 80%."
Mourinho replied: "They can take the ball home, I take the 3 pts."
    Enough said.

While Mourinho is the greatest coach Chelsea ever had, I'll take Pep anytime any day. Pep leaves a legacy wherever he goes. Just look at his students now coaching like him.
If Mou left a legacy at Chelsea, we wouldn't be in this position after he left. Guys like Lamps and Terry would have continued his legacy and taken this club to higher heights but he left nothing for our legends to clutch at and now we are back to square one looking for someone to take us out of this hole.
Negative football depends largely on luck but attacking football requires only hard work and the rest will fall into place most of the time.

Madrid actually dominated City. No main GK, two main CB, defensive midfielder and no starting striker yet guys over 30 like Carvajal, Nacho and Rüdiger were the ones keeping Grealish, Foden, Silva and Haaland silent for almost the entire game. City generated 2.7 xG in 33 shots over 120 minutes. RM forced City wide all game and City despite passing the ball a thousand times, did not know how to penetrate into the box. Doku was the only one who truly made the difference and created clear cut chances that were not solely influenced by mistakes from defenders. Even Henry said that City barely had clear cut chances. They were mostly generated from small mistakes by Madrid. I remember Man City parking the bus against Atleti after being up a goal and no one complained. Man City scored the same amount of goals as Real Madrid over both legs. Madrid put up a 90s Italian defensive masterclass. They won the pen shootout because of Rüdiger, Kepa and Lunin, they won on a tactical level. Madrid dominated both legs by scoring early and taking the lead or scoring quick after Man City scored. Man City never led in the tie for more than 10 minutes, over 2 matches. They were constantly chasing the score whilst Madrid when scoring were able to defend their lead for way longer. Madrid were actually better offensively for scoring goals with less chances and defensively for not allowing to be scored against despite City's posession. Having the ball most of the time and playing like clowns with 30 shots resulting in 1 goal sounds worse than old school Italian defending.
      For the Chelsea fan below:
What's a Chelsea fan doing in this comment section? Shouldn't you guys spend more useless billions and fight over penalties? Rodri and City fans complain about defending when Rodri himself played for Atletico Madrid. City in the past, when taking the lead have defended exactly like this. Like Henry said: "defending is part of the game" and considering the fact that City couldn't hold their lead (2 times) for longer than 10 minutes says a lot about their defensive flaws. Real Madrid had a lot of chances at the Bernabeu but in order to dominate, you finish those chances. Just like Foden who completely missed the ball and KDB who skied it. Henry even pointed out how that KDB chance was onr of the only clear cut chances. Maybe do better next time with 33 shots resulting in 1 goal.

I read a lot of people saying that RM parked the bus and waited only for clutch moments to attack. I mean this was a knockout match with a tied aggregate and Madrid were playing against a formidable opponent in their home-ground. What do you expect? Any strategy/tactic to win within the fairplay limits is acceptable. After 10 years, people will talk about the trophies in the team's cabinet rather than who played a game that was more enjoyable to watch!
Madrid played deeper than they normally do and waited patiently for City to drop, relied on long balls and that did enough to put dent into City's scoresheet. It was a defensive masterclass. But it's not always that they do it.
As far as City are concerned, they played a more dominant football but the thing that was bothersome was that no one took chances from outside the box except for KDB (seeing how their attempts were being efficiently blocked inside), and relied too much on short passes even inside the box. Some of them could've been converted had someone taken the chance. 18 corners and somehow we couldn't find the net.
Haaland ghosted as usual. His contributions are miniscule unless the ball linked up to him by the midfield lands straight to his body. People comparing him to Messi need a reality check. Messi in his prime dribbled the ball away from 2-3 defenders who were constantly onto him, made a lot of solo runs after dispossessing ball from his opponents. Haaland, despite his size, couldn't get Rudiger alone off of his balls.
Pep is a legend but his puritanical approach to dominating the game with absolute possession could benefit from some variations during days like these. But he wouldn't see otherwise or admit it since it's so deeply etched into his DNA now. City played a great game nonetheless and Madrid had to use every minute of their past experience to hold them back.
The performances worth noting from yesterday's game by City: Walker (his one-on-one with Vini alone saved us a goal or two), Akanji, KDB, Grealish and Doku (Doku breaking through the Madrid wall with his dribbling changed the game).

That what I keep telling people, when city k.o Bayern last season ,didn't they concede possession and allow Bayern to attack attack , Bayern had the ball yet city won the game , when city played Milan in the final , Milan had the ball yet city won ...... I have learned on thing and Madrid understand this , there is a huge advantage for a team with quality players that allows the other team to posses the ball ..... Yes if you play against westham or Luton etc those guys don't have quality players , but when a quality team decides to seat back and allow you to posses the ball ,they are most dangerous like that. .... And that is how city won last season .....I always wondered why city went for Halaand instead of isak ..... Because isak is a more complete striker who drops deep ,dribbles and is more efficient than halaand on goal , if isak has a half chance ,he will burry the goal.... When isak was at sociedad I was screaming at the screen " why can't Madrid get this guy " he was always killing us .... The way city play , halaand will always ghost if man to man marking is done on him ....

@@naturalmulundu8611the thing is City didn't take its chances that's where the problem comes from.
Don't also forget that they had to press Madrid because they were behind pretty early so they had to try to get the equalizer. Not only that, they had to get the second goal to keep Madrid from dragging the game to penalties. So can't blame them for keeping the ball so much.
Besides, this is why RM is so good in this competition, they know to take their chances once it arrives but City doesn't seem to know that yet.

@@anmolshaw3603the difference between last year and this year is City took their chances.
When you play against a Catenaccio side, you have to take your chances as little as they come. If you don't, you'll have problems. It's that simple.
Had KDB or Phil Foden scored their clear chances, Real would have lost by at least 5 goals and people like you who don't know anything about football would crawl back into the hole from whence you came, with your tale between your legs.
