    Food for thought. I often buy used gear. I have used M4/3rds for a couple of years and most of my gear is used.

    been a photographer for 20 years and I only buy used gear, it is very important that there is a 2nd hand market, it makes photography easier to enter, it keeps things out of landfills, and it gives the seller to buy the next thing they want.
    The only camera that I considered buying new was the Canon EOS Rebel T1i/500D in 2010 and that was mainly for a few features the T1i offered that earlier EF cameras were lacking.

    I’m a used guy too. Never have regretted it, and if I buy something by mistake ,I don’t feel too bad because I didn’t spend much to start with. Robin Wong just put out a video praising old dslrs for teaching newcomers how to take a photo. Keep up the good work.👍

    One big advantage of the Olympus cameras is that Olympus is the oldest mirrorless system so there is a lot of great used cameras and lenses.
    I bought the four thirds 50-200mm f/2.8 and an adapter for about $650.. A great lens. Now I'm looking at a used 17mm and 25mm f/1.2. I will buy just one; the 17mm is the sharper of the two but the 25mm is more versatile for my use. The OM system om-1 mark 1 is now selling at a 40% discount. For a retired teacher it is appealing and affordable.
    Brian, I always enjoy your videos. Your warmth and charm comes through. Please keep it up.

      I got my om1 for around 1099 usd a few days ago(im from hong kong so 8600 hkd) brand new, kind of sad that omds don't offer much firmware upgrade for the om1 and instead opted for a half assed upgrade. Also beware that the om1 is very much prone to scratches(at least mine does). After a few days of light usage i found out that my monitor hinge got a very deep scratch on it, like it got keyed or something even though i didn't drop it or anything. It was on my pillow next to me and i found it out after i woke up, so yea no second hand value now after less than a week😂

    My original E-M1 (purchased used for under $200) does 95% of what I want, but I wish OM Systems or Panasonic would introduce an "upgraded" model that is weather sealed, keeps the tilt screen, and has a viewfinder that doesn't blackout in landscape mode if you wear sunglasses. Eventually I may like to obtain such an improved camera, but only at a good used price.

    Geez Brian you have stirred my mind with your views on buying secondhand cameras. I have noticed that the OM-1 secondhand hasn’t lost much value as the OM-1 ii is stupidly more expensive for not much benefit based on price difference.

  • @hedydd2

    Almost the same here Brian. I buy used and, more often new ones that have gone out of production and are being sold at a big discount. I got my G9 used but E-M1 MkII new at less than half its launch price a few moths after the MkIII was launched.
    One thing that bugs me about both cameras, which were top of the range, is that they are stripped of some really useful features compared to ‘lesser’ models such as the G7 and GX80. Specifically the great pop up flashes and auto Panorama operation and the nifty auto pan and zoom that the GX80 has. There’s more missing and I cannot fathom why. I think I would be happier with a G85 rather than the G9 because I miss the always-with-me convenience of the flash but particularly the Panoramic, which I used quite a lot when I had a prime lens like a 20 or 45mm fitted.

    My last new purchase was the em1 mk3 with 12-100 and it's a great combination and wonderful to use but I have just treated myself to a Pen F and 3 s/h lenses all in mint condition - this is my 'compact' outfit!
    Would I buy s/h again - certainly!

    Someone else's trash is someone else's treasure. My four m4/3 cameras is testament to that. With secondhand you get to see the reviews of what is good and not so good, with improvements of up grades all ready done, so no frustrating teething problems. Again another intresting video.🥰

    Photography is my hobby for 50+ years. I still use Fuji X-M1, bought some years ago for peanuts, when on my eMTB due to small form factor. I use X-10 that I bought discounted as new model arrived. X-T2, used. Lens: mainly older and used ones. Last year I bought Oly e-400, rare model, KodakCCD, 10 MP, together with kit lens for 80 eur, near mint! Nice. And I could easily buy the latest and the greatest Leica, GFX, Canon, Nikon ... But no, I found out that gear once being great is still great if you know what you want to do. And I love retro look! Yes Pen upgrade would be perfect!

    it really isnt an issue when you buy used as long its working without faults. hopefully whoever got the GH5, GH4 and EM5iii i had is making even better use out of them a lot more than i did.
    i opted new so i have something reliable in the beginning to the end, while not being held back by some features. and i feel the time i go used is when i buy a small M43 to use like a pocketable point and shoot. i only have a couple big cams at the moment but wouldnt mind a tiny one for almost incognito photos.

  • @blackburneflw

    I buy used but only from Japanese stores on EBay. Competitively priced, accurate descriptions and responsive to the customer. They do away with the dreamers trying to get exorbitant prices. Further, because used is cheaper I can get broader experience with different gear. Classic example is the Nikon range of lenses that go back to the 1950’s & are really inexpensive. Also, recycling gear means I’m not encouraging excessive manufacturing leading to factory emissions exacerbating climate change problems. People are obsessed with the newest and flashiest stuff be it camera’s or cars. It’s absurd and unnecessary consumerism.

    I buy in the same way. I've worked my way up to em3 and am happy that it does what i need. My son has just got into carrying a camera on hus trips and uses my original em1. He loves it. The firmware updates for that canera were phenomenal. Back wheel got a bit ropey, so i picked up the battery pack which has the wheel facility and hey presto! It's a real quality workhorse

    I agree Brian I’m looking at the latest cameras coming out but the difference with me I’m about 10 years behind the latest lol but I must say I’m concerned that camera manufacturers seem to be going away from metal chassis for plastic yes they make them lighter but personally it’s the feel of the camera in my hand . But I do like the retro looks 😊👍🏻

    Thanks Brian..I’m just a hobbyist at best and often take video and photos while out traveling either long trips hiking or in our camper-van. Pretty much prefer small cameras (I also have g9, but it’s rarely goes with me as I find it a bit too big for my use). And in truth I tend to always over-spec my needs. . And I’m leaning towards the used market to fill my next purchase. There are some wonderful small cameras out there. Perhaps an OM5, but some of the older/smaller lumix like a g7 or even a g100 might work just as well.

    I love the people who have GAS. They often want to sell off their very newish older gear to get the latest and greatest. I have an E-M1 Mark III and there are so many features on this camera model that I have yet to use, so I have no case or cause to upgrade yet. I might be ready to get an OM1 body by the time the third generation OM1 comes out. All of my lenses have been purchased used as well. I have no qualms about purchasing first generation lenses as well. I have a mix of PRO, Premium and Kit lenses. Perhaps the best purchase that I ever made was the plastic fantastic 40-150mm R for $80 Canadian. But the used 12-40mm PRO lens is my prize joy, and that 75mm f1.8!!!!!!!!!

    Interesting video, Brian, and the beautiful flowing river in the background and the old trees, make me want to join you for a walk! I’m rather fed up with gumtrees!!!! Longing to see something different, but am laid up with a pulled muscle in my back. However, lying here I find I’m looking up old cameras, and the G9 is looking very inviting, having bought a Lumix 14-140mm lens and finding it better than the Oly 12-200 for focussing. Just wish OM would produce a new Pen F.

    A question on a semi related topic. My local camera store is having a run out sale on the original OM-1. Brand new, everything in the box, full 2 year warranty for $2200 AUD (approx £1140). So, my question to you is: Would you pay £1140 for a brand new OM-1 Mk1?

    Same with the G9 and me. Was talking with the Panasonic rep during a break at the store’s extravaganza and learned about the great deal. I drove home to bring a very old Panasonic camera in the store for the great discount.
    “My used cameras are your castoffs.” Exactly! I get excited about what I’m going to own in two to five years. Last year I purchased an Olympus EM1 Mii with the 12-40mm pro lens at a very good price. This is how I’ve purchased the GX85/9/8 and PL15, P20, 25, and 12-60mm lenses. An important principle is if the camera took excellent images a few years ago it will take excellent images now for me. I don’t need the newest and greatest feature though the PDAF is exciting for Panasonic gear.

      im guilty of not thinking straight when it comes to stuff like that. but i go to lengths of selling the current ones to afford the newer systems and have done twice.
      not because i want the latest, but rather what would benefit me better and to replace something that had flaws. i was a gh5 user and didnt like the lack of USB charging so off it went for credit and i got the mark 2 which to me was an incredible night and day difference

    I'm thinking of getting a second hand gh4 to get back into the hobby but I've seen some signs looking at photos that they make peoples heads look funny (wider), is this just a bad choice of lens or what. Or are 4/3 camera's more for sport and wildlife photography?

    • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  Před 4 měsíci

      Definitely the choice of lens and distance. MFT can produce some stunning portraits. That’s my main line of work. Try the 42.5 or 45mm lens to shoot portraits and a 60mm for headshots. No distortion there.

    • @PeckhamHall
      @PeckhamHall Před 4 měsíci +1

      @ThatMicro43Guy Thank you for the reply, It's just confusing with 4 sensor sizes and lenses that just work on some and leave a ring on others, but I'm slowly getting it, I think.

    • @ThatMicro43Guy
      @ThatMicro43Guy  Před 4 měsíci

      @@PeckhamHall I did a video last October about why I’ve stopped using FF equivalents for this very reason. Now I talk in focal length types, super wide, wide, standard, short telephoto, tele, long tele etc. I have a little chart of focal lengths for each sensor size and if I’m using a particular sensor I look within those bands. For instance if I want to do upper body portraits is use a short tele. On my FF I used to shoot an 85mm on an APS-C a 50mm would fall into that on MFT a 45mm. If I want a standard lens then FF would be 50, APS-C around 35mm and MFT a 25. All approx values but I also don’t fret too much over being too exact. If it looks good in the viewfinder and you are shooting from the right distance for you to be happy then that’s the right lens.

    • @PeckhamHall
      @PeckhamHall Před 4 měsíci +1

      @ThatMicro43Guy Thank you for your help. I know what went wrong, I think looking back, I probably saw a comparison between an ASP-C camera and MFT camera using the one len or compatible size leneses, but not really knowing the actual format size other than 35mm, 1.6 for sony, 1.5 for nikon, half for MFT. It was probably the ASP-C camera being presented in an aspect ratio of 3 to 2, and I was probably thinking it was an FF, compared to an MFT being in a 4 to 3 ratio. My brain thought that the len distorted the image, but I know now it was the cropped sides in comparison to the other, but at the time it through me down a rabbit hole of lens to camera compatible trouble possibly. But I looked into it this morning. I did photography 30s ago, and other than buying a Minolta 20 years ago, that was still a film camera. I haven't done much of anything. But I will watch more of your videos on this subject to see if I can learn anything else, as the hobby is cheaper and easier than ever now, but these crop sizes even on FF it didn't occur to my being a film guy years ago, lol.
      My friend, thanks.
