- Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings is a real-time strategy video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. Released in 1999 for Microsoft Windows and Macintosh in 2001,[citation needed] it is the second game in the Age of Empires series. The Age of Kings is set in the Middle Ages and contains thirteen playable civilizations. Players aim to gather resources, which they use to build towns, create armies, and defeat their enemies. There are five historically based campaigns, which conscript the player to specialized and story-backed conditions, as well as three additional single-player game modes; multiplayer is also supported.
Despite using the same game engine and code similar to its predecessor's, development of The Age of Kings took a year longer than expected, forcing Ensemble Studios to release Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome in 1998 instead. The design team focused on resolving significant issues in Age of Empires, but noted on release that some problems remained.
Reception of Age of Empires II was highly positive. The significant number of new features was praised, as were the gameplay improvements. The game received "universal acclaim" according to video game review aggregator Metacritic. Three months after its release, two million copies of Age of Empires II had been shipped, and it topped sales charts in seven countries. The game won multiple awards and is today considered a classic of its type, having had a significant impact on future games in its genre. The original Age of Empires II and its 2000 expansion pack, The Conquerors, were later released as The Gold Edition. Age of Empires II is often considered one of the greatest games ever made.
An updated high-definition graphics version of the game, Age of Empires II: HD Edition, was released in 2013. The HD Edition includes the original game and the expansion The Conquerors, as well as new campaigns, civilizations, and updated graphics for high-resolution displays. A remaster, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, was released in November 2019.
Gameplay
Age of Empires II is a real-time strategy game that focuses on building towns, gathering resources, and creating armies to defeat opponents. Players conquer rival towns and empires as they advance one of 13 civilizations through four "Ages": the Dark Age, the Feudal Age, the Castle Age (representing the High Middle Ages), and the Imperial Age (reminiscent of the Renaissance)-a 1,000-year timeframe.[5] Advancing to a new Age unlocks new units, structures, and technologies, but players must first build certain buildings from their current age and then pay a sum of resources.[6]: 31
Civilian units, called "villagers", are used to gather resources; they are either male or female-sex does not affect their abilities. Resources can be used to train units, construct buildings, and research technologies, among other things; for example, players can research better armour for infantry units. The game features four types of resources: food, wood, gold, and stone. Food is obtained by hunting animals, gathering berries, harvesting livestock, farming, and fishing, both from shore and from boats. Wood is gathered by chopping down trees. Gold is obtained from either gold mines, trade, or collecting relics in a monastery. Stone is collected from stone mines. Villagers require checkpoints, typically depository buildings (town center, mining camp, mill, and lumber yard), in order to store gathered resources.[7]

Metratron in english: Hello noble ones
Metatron in sicilian: I'll kill your entire family if you don't work
Seeing this man Geek out is the highlight of my day
same
Same , he looks like a little happy kid. Precious.
It's a shame my dad can't play age of empires, due to his stroke. He loves age of Empires and his grandparents were from Sicily
Sorry to hear that. Give him a brotherly hug from a Sicilian from the old world. 👍
Hearing the different languages was actually what I loved the most about the game. I would never care to play versus hard AI because I would focus on roleplaying lol and building towns and stationing guards and such
Looking at Metatron "fanboying" at the Sicilian made my day
5:37 I don't know if it's Old Sicilian or not, but in another case, for example the Franks civilization, it seems to me they say "Oïl" in spite of "Oui" (yes). This gives perhaps an indication for other civilizations.
In AoE 4, they went a little further, each period changes the language, at the beginning it sounds more "Gallo-Roman", and towards the end it's closer to Middle French.
That would be cooler
Franks spoke Germanic though
@@stoicazoo7845 Yeah, but from the 9th century, the high nobility began to speak like the Gallo-Romans. Old French and Old Occitan was gradually born.
The lower nobility already knew at least Gallo-Roman communication since the Merovingians, since they were more in contact with the population.
@@tibsky1396 Oh ok cool. Thank you!
That's a neat touch
Have never seen Metatron so excited. Is nice 😌
Seeing you so excited for the representation of your own language/people just makes ME so happy. It's alwayd such a joy to see people genuienly happy like this.
My grandpa is 100% Sicilian. When I used to play aoe2 I always played the Italians or teutons on the Italy map. Seeing them add Sicily definitely makes me happy
Also was wondering when you were gonna play aoe
That's awesome. I reacted the same giggly happy way whenever they released the Portuguese.
5:20 I love how he just casually says "I'm gonna kill your whole family if you don't work" with no emotion whatsoever
Metatron is a Sicilian mafioso confirmed
At first I thought I was having déjà-vu, but thankfully some comments and your comments confirmed that it is a reupload, which means I'm not completely losing my marbles.
Anyway, thanks for the video, and have a good day. The same to everybody, have a nice day.
Honestly impressive that they used actual Sicilian.
Would like to see you cover Puerto Rican Spanish, it's a weird dialect and accent because some of the Rs are silent, or turn into Ls and some speakers pronounce it like the French R.
They also use the Spanish lisp, don't they?
@@shinobi-no-bueno Some do.
The "french R" itself is a modern mutation or foreign influence. French R, like all latin languages, traditionally use Latin rolled R. This R is still found in French America, and in mainland France until early 20th century (Edith Piath era)
@@shinobi-no-buenoThat would make sense, as it was the last Spanish colony to commit treason, alongside Cuba. They likely have a greater influence from modern Spanish
Puerto Rican Spanish is not a dialect, it's just Spanish spoken in a very f*cked up way , quite pathetic if you ask me.
Podel
Entendel
De velda e un asco ecuchal a una pelsona hablal así 🤮🤦
2:35 That's the little child who lives inside Metatron 😂.
2:35 Man, that energy. Gotta respect that!
It would be nice to see you reacting to the Romans ,they have a different dialect then the byzantine, i’m curious if you can understand it?
I'm so happy you made a video about my THIRD favorite game from my MOST favorite franchise! :)
Man I'm from Palermo too, its so funny to see you excited speaking sicilian ahah, you seem very different from when you speak English. Its so funny listening to tipical palermo phrases, like "tagghia a ligna curnutu o ti tagghiu a faccia" ahah. Great video😊
This is gonna be good. Bring out the Arancini.
Arancine he's palermitano not catanese 😉
I love it when people overly giddly about their own language/culture.
Wow!thank you so much man!I was the one who ask you,in your lifestream for more age of empires content😃
Would you do a video on the silician in godfather 2?
Ok, a little of backstory.
Back in 2012, some guys, very fans of the franchise made a mod called "the forgotten", introducing the Italians, Incas, Slavs, Magyars and Indians. It got so much traction in the comunity that by 2013 when Microsoft released the HD version, the hired them to take care of AOE2... and so "Forgotten Empires" is taking care since. They are responsible for all the expansions and for the Definitive Edition.
They said in interviews that every time they are working in a specific civilization, they like to contact people from that area to be more authentic.
I'm so impressed. I got kinda worried about him at the start, because he was falling so far behind. But he actually caught up! And he started to win! Incredible come back!
I love your enthusiasm in this video
Ok ok, questo è il tuo video migliore in assoluto. La amo, Professò.
Thank You so much , for this interesting and really fun video ! 😊😅
This is why representation matters. Medieval Sicilian man feeling seen and validated. LOL
I agree! But I felt represented and validated because it was done right. It was accurate. If they put Sicilians but then they sounded like Germans it would have upset me. So I support representation when it's done right. A small clarification.
It is basically a reupload from two years ago. I felt strange until I realized: like why he says he will play it for the first time etc. :D
I love seeing him get gitty about his own language being used
This video cracked me up and really helped this train ride go by so fast
When he speaks Sicilian, you hear out hid life long dream to command a cosa nostra clan
It so good that seeing a fellow man is reuniting his language. As a turk I am very proud that Age of Empires 2 has many Turkic state but still waiting for more like Göktürks.
Either I've got the most brutal déjà-vu in history, or this is a reupload.
when in the game they say "A vostro servicio", sounds so similiar to the old spanish language in the word "vostro", that nowadays it's pronounced "vuestro"
my fav history teacher and fav videogame ever ❤❤❤
Il silenzio prima del “salutamo” è stato epico hhahahahah. mi è piaciuto vederti così emozionato
I love how excited you are, but i was waiting to hear your pronunciation of words like "Sargeant" and "Donjon", the unique unit and building of the civ, and you cut those off completely u.u
Haha! It was fun to see you that excited xD
Since AOE 4 just drop the byzantine i was hoping you do a same videos about them and other small stuff in the "Sultans ascend" DLC
I'm happy too see you excited playing Age of Empires II and listening to the Sicillian language :)
bro made a letsplay in armour like chad 😎
That looks so similar to Age of Mythology. I'm almost tempted to buy it but not sure if its that different enough to make it worth it. In semi-related news, the Sicilian Kingdom makes its presence known in the 2nd Medieval Total War. Its a pretty decent game.
Age of Empires recived a lot more love over the years than Age of Mythology, despite being from the same studio. I would say that if you like RTS games, then AoE is a must play.
@@maxi2702 I'll give it a go. Only thing I wish AOM did would have been take a page out of Command and Conquer and let you take over the temples etc. rather than just destroy them.
I knew this was an old video. They still have Scutage as their UT.
The original was a 28 minutes long video so this is an edited, faster version to catch the linguistic moments but ye :)
> arangina
Dude, that's a COXINHA, the same way we Brazilians do it 😂nice to learn where it came from!
Interesting, is it a pork dish?
@@shinobi-no-bueno Chicken.
@@shinobi-no-bueno rice, the most widespread variant contain ragù with green peas but I'm unsure as to how traditional that is.
Fun fact, it is called "arancino" in eastern Sicily (e.g. in Catania and Messina)
@@bacicinvatteneaca Yeah, I checked the recipe, it's not exactly the same as our coxinha 🤭because that one has wheat dough, and is filled with shredded chicken, spices and very melty cheese. But on the outside? They'll fool 100% of viewers.
Ragù with peas in a rice shell does sound great though.
Haha! love this. It's been forever since I played this game. Maybe I should get back to it. :D
It was really edifying seeing how much you enjoyed playing a game in your native language. It irks me every time an Italian tells me that those 'vulgar dialects' (they're languages, obviously) should just be left to die a natural death. I hate seeing heritage fade. I wish they'd start teaching them in schools. Surely Italy has progressed enough as a nation that it could survive a little linguistic revival.
i'm am so excited that you are so excited about my favourite game
hope you enjoy it and if you ever wanna learn some build orders or just have fun with it... sing me up
Now you made me play this game. Luckily, my husband never gotten rid of old operating systems, pc from ‘90’s. We ordered the game from ebay, last night.🙂
Very fun. I love hearing the sicilian language. Grazie :)
I am not a fan of risotto ,I have made it,BTW,but I would try Arancini ,your giant hush puppies look good.
Wait, didn’t you already posted that video? Or am I having deja vu?
6:47 😂😂😂 he answered your question
He did! Didn't he?
@@metatronacademyit seems the game's AI was more advanced than we could have imagined
When you speak Sicilian, but everything you say has a threat of violence, you're not helping with national stereotypes 🤣
This is a reupload from the main channel, isn't it?
Sicily as a playable civilisation is so cool! Still, having Spanish as a unified medieval civilisation apart from Portuguese doesn’t make sense in the least. It’s totally anachronistic.
metatron, are you a gamer? i see overwatch merch in your videos a lot
It looks like they put the Hautevilles Norman dynasty's banner ans period for Sicily.
Ho avuto diversi flashback di mia nonna che mi inseguiva con il battipanni 10/10
Didn't you already do a video about this a while back?
on his main channel. This is the same video.
@@eodyn7why is he reuploading lol
Al pronto sugnu e al salutamu sono morto dal ridere!😂😂😂 lo scarico subito compà!😂
Something went wrong.. at the end Raf.
Black screen.
Just thiught you would wanna know
This must be a newer edition of AOE than mine.I don't remember Sicily as an option.
I sperg about as much when a game has a proper Quebec French dub.
Are you gonna try the Romans soon?
"Hold on, I'll kill his family, this useless guy." 😂
Ahahah at 3:52 you just killed me.
My wife was like:"Are you insane?!"
Why the reupload?
You have a pretty great London accent mate.😂
sembra esserci entrambi i lati della sicilia ,hanno cercato di dare un siciliano standard a volte però murivu o primo pronto sugnu. Però mi aspettavo anche un morto sugnu come cattivo adattamento xD
Even the horse is Sicilian. Lmao
On one hand, they can include sicilian language into game and on other hand, they gave us orthodox onion churches with golden roofs (I am Czech) which really offends me. 😀
Ha! I noticed how you said 'arancinA'! That'll teach all those people who say it wrong :).
Now that the Romans have been added you could do a similar video about them!
The next could be...Sicilan in medal of honor game.
Meravigliòso.
Why didn't they hire you for the voices??? :(
I've never seen Metatron so giddy 😇
I could probably watch an hour of this, grazij!
Macari, lu me ariuscafu chinu di anciddi è! 😂

I know some italians here in Germany. And their most used Word is Minga or Minchia. Why is this not in Game? .............😄😄
1:32 As a messinese, I'm pretty triggered by that
When ends with an a you know you're getting the best 😜
Do this but for the Godfather trilogy.

Not fooling me, you already reviewed the sicilians on the other channel
I am half Sicilian!😂👍
Great video but wtf is that thumbnail
What’s wrong with it?
@metatronacademy not sure I think I'm just a bit put off by your expression maybe lol
As an aside, they added Slavs as a single culture? Wtf lol?
I want to say that all languages in AoE2 as far as I know is mock languages.
'muraturi' means 'pickles' in romanian, lol
