Ex-car mechanic here, normally we don’t recommend hanging your callipers by the brake line. Instead we find a spot, hang it with a bungee or zip tie. Especially avoid doing it if your car is older with crusty lines.
Edit: Ok from the comments, I can say that there’s enough people hanging their callipers by the brake line, it seems fine. But as to not cause extra fatigue, I would still use me trusty bungee. Cause I’m ✨extra✨ like that. Stay civil boys and gals.

Never mind that he suggested pulling the brake lever with the caliper off and the pads out😂 all well and good until the piston pops out and the DIYer finds his/herself in a pickle. Also any anti-cease grease or release pin lubricant that would be there from the previous mechanic or dealership has now been washed off. So now you're introducing potential for rust and greater mechanical wear. This guy obviously isn't thinking about how dangerous this bit of misinformation could be.

When you use the brake lever to push the pistons out, you should have a right sized block of wood in between them. Without one, you run the risk that the pistons will come out unevenly, 3 of them could stay put and only 1 would move for example, particularly if they really are dirty.

It is safe for o'rings. I have been using it for years and years.

Cleaning that portion of the brake calipers aren’t going to do anything to stop or prevent a “caliper” from seizing. When a caliper seizes, it happens behind that rubber seal. Or it happens because the pad is not returning/sliding. Meaning the brake pad it self is seized in the bracket. However it’s still not a bad thing to clean like shown in this video. Yea I’m a Automotive tech of just about 20 years now. I’ve rebuilt both automotive and motorcycle calipers. Knowing how it works is knowing how it fails.

    @Andyyy982 Před 8 měsíci +4

Don't do this. You rely on your brakes for safety. If you dont know what to do, take it to a mechanic or get your information from a credible source. The calipers are supposed to have a lubricant on the release pins to decrease mechanical wear, stop rust build-up and help the pads return to a neutral position. Also he's suggesting you pump the brakes with the pads out. On some calipers this can cause the piston to pop right out. If you don't know what you're doing, you're then in for a world of hurt. Also someone else suggested not leaving the caliper hanging by its brake line. While several people do this and have not had issues, its still the wrong way to do it and if you have any minor cracks in your brake line you're only going yo make things worse. Additionally it adds strain to a part that was never meant to experience any. Use common sense and vet your sources.

Somewhere there is a newb mechanic frustrated because he cant fit the brakepads over the disc due to him not knowing that he has to push the pistons back in the caliper before re-assembling the pads. Or even worse his pistons are pushed outside of the caliper because the wanted to clean the entire piston not knowing you can also push them out completly causing you to clean all of the brake fluid up and refill and bleed the brakes. For that guy: please don't do this yourself.

Can you show how to push the pistons back in evenly. Thanks

You have to either get a caliper spreader or put the pads back in, and use a screwdriver to compress them.

Well done on prematurely ruining your seals. Unless your going to actually change your seals. You should only clean the pistons if you plan to do a full brake service. 👍🏻

There's less chance of calipers seizing than the chance of you re-assembling the caliper wrong

Its a good time to hit the brake pad with sand paper, maybe do it next time. Removing the top layer of the pads will eliminate the squeaky or grinding sound.
Also it wont add any more grove to the rotor and the performance of the pads will be the best when the surface if fresh to rub against the rotor. Yes cleaning the pads with break clean is a good way, just a little more work maybe a few seconds but its worth it.

I'm not arguing that maintenance need to be performed. However, in ALL of my years riding and/or being in and round motorcycles, I have never randomly taken my calipers off and cleaned them for fear of them seizing. Maybe that is because when you change the rotors and pads or shoes and drums, you are supposed to remove and rebuild the calipers. Why? Because the way you did it still leaves a ton of debris on the other half of the pistons and cylinder walls. I mean, I guess there's nothing like doing half oof the job. Regardless, when you clean the entire cylinder during the brake change, it will last that entire amount of time without seizing.

If your brakes locking up it’s most likely due to master cylinder failure if you can decompress the caliper like normal with no lines hooked up

Those pistons seal with special o rings, I know they are fuel resistant but I'm not sure they are resistant to break cleaner especially if the o ring is old...
Also never seen a maintenance book where you need to clean your break caliper...

A good reason to always inspect a used motorcycle. This can go bad two ways: someone who does this and doesn't correctly put the brakes back in correctly or a seized caliper from lack of maintenance. I would only do this when changing pads but not randomly.

  • @championxxlNL

Brake cleaner is nice but it can dry out rubber in the long term, wouldn't use it in the caliper. Brake cleaner is only made to clean the oil of new brake disks but it's nice for other stuff, just not rubber
