How to Plan an IFR Flight Using a Systematic Approach to Safety with Foreflight

- In today's video, I share with you the IFR flight planning process that was taught to me by instructor; a guy who trained airline pilots for 14 years.
I think the challenge for most newer pilots when it comes to planning an IFR trip is that we don't yet have enough experience to easily transfer all the theory we have accumulated during our training into a practical application....and as you will see in this video, if you have a solid process in place, it becomes a lot easier to do correctly.

👋 About Me 👋
After a successful business career where I've started and sold a number of companies, I've decided to get out from behind my computer to pursue a lifelong passion and start career 2.0 as a professional pilot. My goal is to get to 1500 hours and then either work for a large regional, a major, or possibly even cargo. Once my flight training is done, I will work as an independent CFI until I have reached the 1500 hours needed to get hired by one of the above. You can learn more at www.FlyWithTrent.com.

You’ve just helped me understand something in 20 minutes that no other instructor seems able to do. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Love this checklist for IFR flight planning. Getting close to my instrument check ride.
Glad to hear it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Hey Trent - you could always use the "Map Annotations" feature in ForeFlight if you wish to highlight/draw something on the map. This way anyone watching your video can see where you are 'pointing' on the map.
Good point!
Trent, first off congratulations on all of your achievements! You are absolutely crushing it! I am only slightly jealous, but thats ok, I have taken this whole next month off to try to catch up. I am going to do single and multi commercial and get CFI started for sure. Thanks for relighting the fire for me. Absolutely amazing video. I wish I had this when I was doing my instrument training. Finding flows throughout that training seemed to be the most difficult for me. Thanks for this video, I am sure you just gave someone an "Ah-ha" moment. I will second "Thank you for documenting your journey and being an inspiration to us career 2.0 guys"! P.S. I am stealing this checklist!
I’m super happy that my content (and checklist) is providing value. Thanks! And please mention my channel to anyone who’d be interested 🙌
And just like always, your crushing it Trent..💪🤙🤙 thanks for sharing great info! Look forward to more videos coming.
You bet! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Bookmarked! Saving this for when I get to IFR training. This is super useful!
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
Another great video! Thank you for documenting your journey and being an inspiration to us career 2.0 guys.
Thanks for watching! My pleasure.
Trent, thanks so much for sharing your journey, and CONTRATS!!!! Definitely going to share this and thanks for the great checklist!
Glad it was helpful!
Great list - prepping for my IR check ride and this is very helpful!
Great to hear!
Thanks Trent, i appreciate the new App information
Happy to help! Thanks so much for watching and taking a moment to comment! 🙌
You can find the forcast discussion in the airport page under weather then TAF section
Thx!
Trent, you are the blast. I’m following you the whole time, no other videos I am looking for more then yours. Being from Germany, let me tell you, not speaking english from birth, your content is clear and brilliant plus perfectly understandable for a non US citizen. love to follow your route with 55 latest as I am working in an hospital as m.d. with horrible working hours. Nevertheless I try to finish my ATP next to work and you definitely inspire me every single day. Wish I could get off work for three month. My dream is flying for an ambulance or cargo, too. Prefer the ambulance due to my medical origin, but let’s see and I am pressing all my thumbs for you! Thanks a million for the ForeFlight checklist. Brilliant idea.
Go for it, you will succeed, you are almost done. Always happy landings. You are great. Just gave you the like 100! You are 100%, authentic and also sympathetic. THANKS‼️
Thanks so much for the kind words!
Excellent as always
Thanks again!
Great pragmatic video nice job
Thank you! Cheers!
Great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi Trent, this is a great real-use-case walkthrough of Foreflight. I think you would draw more people to this video if they knew this, so renaming may help a little with the youtube metrics. Great video, just wanted to mention that it's even better than I had hoped for.
Thanks for the tip! Just added ForeFlight to the title.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice thanks 😊
Welcome 😊
Great stuff! That forecast discussion is in the TAF section for each airport on the maps tab. Not sure why it doesn't link into the flight tab for planning for convenience.
Good to know. Thx!!
Thanks Trent! Your videos have been super inspirational and helpful for me. In the last month, I have decided to take the leap and make a career change at 35 from construction to aviation. I’ve had my private for a while but in September, I will be doing an IFR rating in 10 days, and then in October, I will be helping ferry an Aztec from Paris to the US. The instructor I will be flying with will give me my commercial instruction on that flight. After that, I think I will complete my CFI, CFII, and MEI. Not sure where I will land after all that! Trying to get it all done as fast as possible for a fraction of the big flight school costs like you are doing! Can’t wait to hear where you’re journey takes you!
Also, I can’t recommend Sheppard Air enough. I’m almost complete with all of my written tests!
Good work Jamie! Best of luck on your journey and thanks for being a part of the FWT community.
Excelente Vídeo. I’m an 48 years old private pilot pursuing my IFR rate now and subsequently Comercial to CFI. I would love to know how you were able to achieve your ratings in such a fast pace. I believe your approach was smart and effective in cost savings for training. If you could share with us how you did it perhaps it would help others looking to follow this path. Thanks
I shared all that in my most popular videos. Watch them:)
Good informational video thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Woah, this is chock full of stuff.. I'll be coming back to this later for sure. Great video! Where did you find the safety distance factor?
I don’t recall….other than to say it is an FAA recommendation.
can you please do a video on your timeline from start to finish i.e. PPL to MEI (which I think you're about to sit for)?
Already planning to do that.
Wow, look at all the flight tools available now days, back in 80’s you had to drag your butt down to the FSO and get half this info in verbal discussion 😊
Yes, the tech tools are amazing these days!
Nice and educational video. Do you have any recommendation of flight school to do a full-time training? I already have my private pilot certificate and working on XC for my IFR training. Thx.
I am a CFI, CFII, MEI and can train you full time in Boise.
Thanks for the checklist! I don't know if you've mentioned this elsewhere, but where are you doing this training? I may consider doing this when I retire from engineering in the next year or so. Too old to become an airline pilot (62), but maybe a corporate pilot. I'm really impressed with how quickly you've gotten these ratings. Congrats!
@@trent_dyrsmid Oh, I like that they use Diamond aircraft. I was going to buy a DA40 if I didn't build a plane (I ended up building a Sling 4, which I love).
Nice plane!
Great knowledge shared by you man, definitely applying and adding this to my pre flight procedure sometime soon, you are not only providing valuable knowledge to those who are trying to find a way to peice all the knowledge into a flight in real time, but also potentially saving a couple mishaps/accidents from happening to the newly rated instrument pilot. Nice job!
Thanks! Link to my checklist in the description
Thank you so much for the wonderful information, I have been trying to download the checklist but it have refused to open after download. Please help
You have to have Foreflight for it to open.
👍👍👍
🙌
Could you please post the links to the sites and apps you mentioned in this video?
Just posted them.
Maybe you covered it in another video but what is your plan for getting the 1500 hours before Skywest? Or, wherever you want to apply?
I’m going to instruct. It is what airlines love to see most because it makes you a much better pilot vs just flying cargo around in a 206.

Thanks man. Big inspiration. And thanks for responding!
You bet
How many flights a day do you take?
1 or 2. Depends on what phases of training.

Love your channel, but background music gets badly in the way of listening
A very small number of people have said that, and as a result, I have asked the editor to turn the music down in my newer videos.
@@trent_dyrsmid thanks! Ps. I’m 43 and looking to follow your steps.
🙌
Beautiful video. I've been following the channel for the past 3 weeks. I realy like your content. I've a comercial liscense but haven't flown since 2013. And now I'm really thinking about going back and becoming a flight instructor to get the hours to continue my career. I'm currently studying the Rusty Pilot refresher. And I'm using all the tips and tricks and channels you've recommended. They are all very very useful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. You're Killing it. Wish you well... Safe flights out there!! 🫡
Thanks so much!
Trent 🛫 there's nothing better than taking a break from studying the FAR for lunch and popping on a new video of yours! Excellent 👍🏻 I'm interested in all aspects of your journey to the legacy status and life in your career beyond. I'd love to hear about the various aspects of each step i.e. ppl. Instrument rating, commercial, Mei, cfi, cfii, ECT. Whatever you find the time to upload. As a 55 year old I'm highly interested in extremely interested in all information regarding employment such as your videos on Cargo and the new one you posted yesterday regarding the sponsorship and 750 hours ECT. Thank you so much 🇺🇸🛩️✈️ All the best 🏆
Thanks Aldo! I expect to have a lot more time to create videos once I’m done with flight school in about 2 weeks.
@@trent_dyrsmid WOW 😳 you've been knocking this out 🏆🥊 From May 6th ish... To Aug 3rd! 3 months! Definitely an inspiration to us All! Have a great weekend ✈️ and ty once again! 🇺🇲
