  • Getting your private pilot's license is the first step towards making a career in aviation possible. Some people choose to get their private pilots license and just keep flying as a hobby. And others use it as the first step in a journey like I'm doing and then go on to earn their instrument rating, multi-engine rating, commercial pilot rating, and more!
In this video, I share with you the following:
✅ What involved in getting the PPL
✅ How long does it take
✅ Why now is such a great time to become a pilot
✅ How to choose an instructor / school
✅ The biggest mistakes that people make (cost $$)

    👋 About Me 👋
After a successful business career where I've started and sold a number of companies, I've decided to get out from behind my computer to pursue a lifelong passion and start career 2.0 as a professional pilot. My goal is to get to 1500 hours and then either work for a large regional, a major, or possibly even cargo. Once my flight training is done, I will work as an independent CFI until I have reached the 1500 hours needed to get hired by one of the above. You can learn more at www.FlyWithTrent.com.

Be aware, the clock starts ticking once you pass your written exam. It's good for 2 years and if you dont complete your checkride by then, you have to retake it. I know several people who have done this.

Find the right instructor. Mine took it as a personal challenge to prove wrong an instructor he hated at another airport that he knew was milking the process. He committed to making every hour count. When I went for my FAA check ride I had 39.5 hours, the check ride counted as the 40th hour. This was in 1994 and I paid a grand total back then of $2,650 to get my license, which I guess would be about $7,500 now in 2024.

This video alone is already more than what I learned in my freshman year in Aviation Sciences at Northeast Louisiana University way back in 1978. A 50,000 dollar degree plan back then quickly became futile. The actual cost was much higher for reasons you just mentioned. I got “the bug” again in the Air Force as an Avionics Instruments specialist. On one occasion I was up in a KC-135 troubleshooting an autopilot bug that was happening in flight. It was a training mission for several new officers to practice maneuvers for refueling but also practice stalls. I got to listen to the instructor guide the students through it all . Hearing the wing buffeting and dropping like a rock and a surprising 3.75 g’s during recovery for 11 hours sticks with me even today. I loved it!
I’m fortunate that I have access to your experience. Aviate, Communicate, Navigate is obviously your calling.

Have been a passenger on commercial jets and have been up in a couple of smaller planes. I would love to get my PPL. Question I have is, my current work schedule (in the ND oilfields, live in IA) is 20 days on 10 days off. How would you go about trying to get the PPL? This video explains how I studied for every oral exam. For the written exams, I relied solely on Sheppard Air….except for the PPL where I recommend this flywithtrent.groundschool.com/
As for jobs other than CFI, there are many many options. Most lay very poorly and give you fewer hours than you can get as a CFI.

The best PPL advice on the internet. Only wish I had this video when I was working on my PPL 30 years ago. I fell into more than a few of the traps he outlines. My first mistake was that I didn't run away when my PPL instructor boasted about the coke he did with his girlfriend over the weekend. Went downhill from there, but I did eventually get my PPL with some complements from the DPE.

Another W video Trent with lots of great information. I'm currently taking your advice, I'm using Sporty to study for my PPL knowledge test to take the test, so when I start at a flight school I get to fly more. I'm glad I have found your channel, I was considering ATP Flight School because of how big the school is and two of my cousins are currently a student at ATP but after watching your videos and others about part 61 compared to part 141 I think I'm going to go with a part 61 and hopefully save some money and time.

Should look into MESA airlines, I think it’s called Pilot readiness or something… for zero or little experience and they are so cheap and very well known amongst large carriers and get you up to 1500 and you start out of training making 101000, you just owe them a few years to pay back the cost of training and the hours… it’s I think $60 per flight hour and they will take out 945 a month from your check to start paying for it you can pay it all at once or increase how much your paying… the friend who told me about it said he knows guys who left MESA for bigger carriers making almost triple

Thanks for sharing this video Trent! "Randomly flying around today" is not uncommon in many flight schools. I suspect the reason is some of these CFI are trying to build hours so they can transition to the airlines... I was doing "chandelle maneuver," "Dutch rolls" and "ILS landing" during my training .. I had about 270 hours under my belt before I took my Private Pilot Checkride. (of course I nailed it)

Just completed my intro flight. MS Flight sim on a C172N was just what I needed to impress my instructor. Finger touch, right rudder, trim, etc. Sim is one thing and feeling the actual controls is another. My point is that sim time might help some forward thinking students show up ready to apply basic skills to real world application.

Great advice, fell for all of this, over 100 hrs, 3 different schools, solo’d 3 different planes, 4 years, written test passed 2x before running out and realized just too expensive as hobby. Never tested for ppl but was signed off to do so…. Unless going for a Career I would give ppl a long review, very few finish and when they do often quickly stop flying.

These videos have good content in them, quite unlike some others that get hyped on CZcams. A lot of the advice given here is pretty standard (fly as often as you can, more is better, use schools that do their own aircraft maintenance, try to fly in a part of the country that has consistently good flying weather, or try to maximize the number of sessions during the times of the year when the weather is better if you cant move, and finally make sure you have a good instructor) What is not said here is that when you schedule a Discovery Flight, most schools will pair you with the newest instructor that they have, in an effort to build that instructor's client base. That might be a good thing, that might be a bad thing, only you will know if you get along with that person or not. So, his advice to do multiple Discovery flights to try different instructors is quite good. I found it curious that Trent's advice is to avoid Part 141 instruction, as a lot of schools will hype Part 141 training as the cost saving option. This video did not really address the differences between the Part 61 training and the Part 141 training and that is an important distinction, IMO. Perhaps there is other content elsewhere in this feed that discusses this, I will have to look and see. If you stay with Part 61 training, then your selection of an instructor becomes even more critical, as you will want to fly with an instructor that tries to keep you progressing through a curriculum. Otherwise, the "just flying around while the instructor builds flight time" problem can happen.
Most schools (at least in my part of the world) are not going to discuss their ratio of students to airplanes. They may not have that information, or if they do, they don't intend to share it with you. This is because in most cases their business model is based on maximizing the amount of time the planes are operating and due to cancellations, this requires the planes to be fully booked or overbooked. What I have seen people do is make some sort of attempt to verbally assure the student that they will have adequate access to planes and instructors and tell the potential student that the instructor will handle scheduling. This makes the scheduling problem look like its in the instructor's control, when it isn't fully. Planes go down for maintenance regularly and the instructor has no control over that.
If you ask a school about DPE availability, they will likely tell you that they have access to them. Often, the school has a DPE on their staff, or is maintaining a close relationship with one. In my part of the world, the instructor handles the DPE selection and scheduling of the check rides. There are a lot of good reasons for this. I can assure you that the DPEs don't have time to talk to dozens of people every day about potentially scheduling check rides. They are busy trying to get check rides completed and they are relying on the local instructor to schedule when the student is prepared AND endorsed. One of the DPEs in my area will NOT allow anyone on his schedule until the instructor has given the required endorsements, in order to avoid late cancellations and a scheduling gap. Just like the instructors, the DPEs are trying efficiently use their time. So again, this is another situation where instructor choice is critical. You want to work with an instructor that will manage the process to check ride completion appropriately and have you scheduled so that you don't wait.
I am glad that Trent put some emphasis on the FAA ACS documents. I have been surprised some in the past couple of years to discover students that have flown with other instructors don't know about it at all. In my view, the ACS is the bare minimum training standard. Hopefully, students will get some exposure to information beyond the absolute minimum, but I certainly understand that it is currently fashionable to promote "minimum" training as quality.

Trent! Great videos and it’s so impressive that you got 7 ratings in just 3 months 🤯
I’m curious - did the school you go to have “stage checks” where a senior/different instructor signs off on a student progressing to next stage of training (within a rating)?
My part 61 school has this which I think likely contributes to longer training times. For one thing, because they need to be scheduled and for another thing because I think the primary instructor feels some internal pressure to make sure you don’t fail it (would look bad on them) and thus potentially “overprepare” you on what will be covered in a stage check.
I’m just flying for fun and so didn’t care too much about how long it took the PPL. Well, it took me about 1 year / 97 hours which compared to you is embarrassing 😅 … but whatever. Having the PPL is a blast and it’s not like the spending stops once you have it. The whole point of having it for me was to fly for fun!!
I’ll say one of the positives I took out of the high hours for the PPL is I felt like I came out of it quite proficient in a variety of conditions. Obviously everyone that passes passes on the same ACS - but I’ve seen some comments on Reddit about 40 hour PPLs who are nervous about gusty winds or about leaving the local area. We passed the same ACS - but me having close to 100 hours still means I have 60 hours more than them in the airplane (and have corresponding less $$$ because of it 😅)

I have a degree in Geography and have always loved seeing the earth from the sky... google maps/earth... aerial photographs of the terrain below... it's always been a fascinating view for me. I've played Microsoft Flight Simulator a bit (actually built a PC specifically to be a gaming computer capable of playing it) but I haven't taken a discovery flight yet. I'm not financially gifted and taking time off to spend money is a difficult option for me, so I've just been imagining becoming a pilot for years. I'm almost 47 now and time is not going to be gifted back to me in the future, so I am getting more and more antsy about doing it. I just don't have the financial ability to do so. Still, love watching videos on flight and found this one and enjoyed it, so I thought I'd drop a comment. Thanks for the great insight. Maybe someday I'll be able to join you up in the clouds.
