Andrea, thanks so much for sharing your experience!! I appreciate you shouting me out as well too. Hoping that people can find more comfort in watching our videos and relating to our experience ✨
Aunye Boone You were such a blessing for me to find! Thank YOU so much for posting your experience. I don’t know what I would have done without it and I wouldn’t have felt comfortable sharing my experience without first seeing yours. We both got our ears back and I hope it helps people get theirs back too.
Aunye Boone how much pain you experienced after surgery and how long it took to heal?
Im glad you both explained it good i have all this

Did you have the urge to rotate your neck a kind of feeling that somthing was out of place inside the ear
Thanks ! Ms Andrea for narrating the difficulties faced by you & sharing your experience which could definitely inspire the hearing impaired people to take right decision at right time.
hey just wanna say that i've been dealing with OTOSCLEROSIS since 2011 driving people crazy.. because it's so annoying.... but anyways i just wanna thank cause you took part in my decision to having the surgery..... i did it yesterday and today i can say that i'm %99.9 better .. IT'S STILL HEALING, IT FEELS A LITTLE CLOG OR SOMETHING... BUT I WISH I COULD'VE DONE 10 YEARS AGO.... .. THANK YOU.. AND FOR OTHERS IN HERE THAT ARE THINKING ABOUT IT.. GO FOR IT
There is so much to your story I can relate to, it's remarkable. I was literally diagnosed yesterday after ten years of putting up with it as best I could. Initially a doctor actually went in and operated because I had broken my nose with very severe facial trauma a year prior and he felt that the impact had probably dislodged the middle ear bones and he could set things straight. The operation however was not very successful, probably because he was not going in looking to fix otosclerosis, thinking it was something else. For the first 6-7 years it was manageable. Audiologists had only ever said that I had a hearing loss, & therefore needed hearing aids. My response was 'I can't afford them', & I never pressed anyone further for any more information, like why I was going deaf in the first place. I just assumed I had listened to music too loud when younger or that my facial injury had done permanent damage to my ear. Three years ago, the tinnitus started, and things started to get really bad. I noticed that what was previously a problem with one ear was now affecting both, and now any sound coming in had to be loud enough to get over the ringing in my ears as well. I have to watch telly with subtitles. Music at full volume, etc. I agree also that people sadly have little patience for you when you are deaf, so I have withdrawn a lot more socially, & work is becoming a struggle. I will be contacted soon by a doctor who will hopefully operate, it encourages me greatly to hear how surgery made a massive difference to you. Thanks for your video.
Hi Jason, going to do the operation soon & also have tinnitus: what was the outcome for you? cheers
@@djozzdraper Is there an update
Hey Jason - I'm going to have the surgery done too (got the appointment this month). And I too have developed tinnitus since probably 2-3 years or so (can't really put my finger on it). I am just really curious if the restored hearing also solved your tinnitus problem. Could you please let me know?
@@nikl4525 Hi, sorry for the lateness of my reply. It took three operations in the end. The first one highly successful, and then two operations to get the other ear right. My hearing is still not perfect but has improved out of sight compared to how it was prior to the operations. The tinnitus has all but gone, and I hear everything pretty much as well as anyone else of my age does. Highly recommend the surgery.
@@jasonmcmillan4373 thanks so much for your timely response! My surgery was postponed due to my project commitments, and I'm hoping to have it done as soon as possible. Your experience really is promising, and thanks so much for sharing with me!
Hi Andrea,
So glad I came across your video. At the age of 45 I just had this procedure done to my left ear. I started suffering from hearing loss in my early 30s. I went thru slight depression and withdrawal in the beginning because I tried to avoid Negative energy. I can truly relate to your story and so happy that you got help at an early age. I can't wait for the doctor to take out packing, i know it's going to be a tearful experience.
Much 💛 Tanya
@Birboot
My hearing improved more than 50% in both ears and now almost have normal hearing decimal range without hearing devices. It is some getting used to because everything is louder so you have to adjust. My advice is to find ENT doctor that you feel comfortable also confirming your diagnosis with MRI. That is what made me feel okay and he was recommended. I hope this helps. Note my second suegery was done about 6mos apart from 1st one. 🙏

@@yashrajtalks hearing improvement is usually immediate after the surgery. It further improves as time passes as the dressing is removed and when middle ear clears of fluid and blood. No improvement needs hearing test and review by the surgeon who had operated.
I lost 100% hearing in my right ear after this surgery which is very unfortunate
Hi Andrea, Thanks for posting this video. Your video encouraged and gave me a lot of Hope to opt for surgery. Finally! Went through this surgery last week and in the process of recovering. It feels like I have super hearing now😃 Happy to be part of conversations instead of shutting myself out.
To all others going through comments section to know whether you can go for Stapedotomy procedure: If you have Otosclerosis, consult doctors and do Stapedotomy without any second thoughts. All you need is to plan one week rest in your busy schedule.
Hey brother are you from india ??
How is your hearing right now?
I have been diagnosed with Otosclerosis a few days back. But afraid of surgery.
I'm so glad you made this video. I wondered what the post-op would be like, so having your testimonial is wonderful. I found myself nodding the whole way through your description of what it's like pre-surgery. Did everyone get some insidious global memo and decide to start mumbling?? Even though I don't read lips or anything like that, the worst is when you're talking to someone, and they nonchalantly turn around for some reason as they're talking. They lost me right then and there!
I was diagnosed with otosclerosis last month. When I found out this was actually treatable, I was ecstatic! I thought I was going to have to live the rest of my life without hearing well or dependent on hearing aids. I'm going to do the surgery in July (after some summer travel). I hope you post follow-up videos to show how things are going or after your second surgery.
tinawilk I’m so excited for you! Do your travels and have fun! It makes a world of a difference with just one ear. I though the same thing that I was going to have to have hearing aids for the rest of my life but thankfully not now!
I will say I’m somewhat glad this happened to me because I have a better understanding of how important it is to make eye constant with people that you’re talking to and I feel more confident speaking to strangers now because I can hear or speaking in a group of people. Love love love that this helped you and it’s only up from here for you!!
@@andreamartin6841 how is ur ear now???
I am 2 weeks post op of having a stapedectomy on my second ear... The first op 13 years ago, I had severe vertigo which eventually subsided and my hearing restored to almost "normal". The second procedure went very well, no vertigo, normal post op dizziness. My hearing has already improved even as it is still healing, I fully expect it to improve over the next couple of weeks. It's life changing!!!Thanks for posting, I have never met anyone else with this condition :)

Thank you so much. You can't imagine how much you're helping people. I don't know what will happen to me. I recently got a job in a hospital and I diagnosed with otosclerosis 5 years back. Right now my condition is just like yours 50% & 60% loss in left and right ears. My HOD is suggesting me to go for the surgery as I work in that hospital they're assuring me that they'll do their best. But still I'm nervous.
Thanks for sharing your story! I had my second stapedectomy surgery last Friday. Your story resonated a lot with mine. I'm soooo thankful this surgery exists and I look forward to a new reality being able to hear everything clearly and at a normal volume.
Hi, Paloma, I had my left ear surgery on December 11th. How’s your hearing now? I still can’t feel the difference even though I went to the doctor on December 28th and he said the hearing has improved. I feel like hearing some voice that seems like when you play with the newspaper.

Thanks for posting this! Very comforting knowing I'm not alone!
I just got my stapedectomy two days ago at age 47. The recovery hasn't been great, but I can already tell my hearing has improved despite ongoing tinnitus and packing in my ear. I think this surgery will be life changing.
Hello. I had my stapedectomy about a month ago. My hearing has been hugely improved since then and continues improving. But I have also been experiencing tinnitus the last few weeks. I'm hoping it is just part of the healing process or the gelfoam dissolving and will go away with time.
@@imail724 sorry to hear about your tinnitus. It would alarming if you never had it before. I had tinnitus prior to surgery and quite severely for the first week after. I'm in my second week of recovery now and it seems better this week. Tinnitus I can cope with, however, as long as my hearing is better. The trick is to accept it and not focus on it. What I am noticing this week is that my taste has gone funny and my tongue is a bit tingly - which can be normal due to them having to go near a nerve in surgery.
@@tlam3309 Thank you for the advice. I have noticed that oftentimes I "forget" about the ringing and life goes on as normal, but then I will remember it, think about it, and focus on it, and that can drive me crazy. It's good to know you get used to it over time, I'm just hopeful that it will not be permanent. But if it is, I hope the tradeoff for improved hearing was worth it.
Andrea Martin a lot of thanks for sharing your story with us!!! It's very helpful. Thank you again!!!
TKS, I am 60 years old and got stapedectomy both 25-30 years ago. Now I have to go in the cabine cause the left ear is loosing earring. . your story is a little mine at 33 years old every body told me . after my ear was 15 DECIBEL MORE THAT IS A LOT.
Before I knew I had otosclerosis, I got up twice in the middle of movies in movie theaters looking for manager to say the following: “How do you expect anyone to understand the plot when the volume is so low??”
I got dizzy looking at fish in aquariums, I got dizzy standing on docks, I thought people mumbled in meetings at work, I was disgusted at how “no one could enunciate,” etc. Until one day my husband thought I had an inner ear infection and thought I should see a doctor.
Not hearing well is very different than not seeing well. Can’t blame not seeing well on others.
This comment! Yes to everything! Amen, 100% truth!
Hi Andrea I totally understand you as I’m 16 and I’m deaf from my right ear, I’m having an operation in 2 days... it’s so upsetting when you have to ask people to repeat what they said. But you go girl, just keep doing you x
Sahar B I hope your surgery went well!! Thank you so much and I’m so happy that you’ve been diagnosed so early and chose to fix it. Everything will be so much easier in school/friends/work and family!!
Andrea Martin thanks so much, I feel better , my doctor said I had another bone merging with my hearing bone and they removed it, I have moderate hearing loss in my ear and they’ll give me hearing aids, I have to consistently tell my friends to repeat themselves and as annoyed they get, sometimes I just prefer not communicating a lot at all. I’ll be using your advice to keep moving on, your amazing! Hope you have a great day!
Sahar B Sameeee I don't communicate at all in my class and I'm 14, I hate having to ask people what they said again and again and again, till I just keep quiet.... now people think I'm mute but idc 😂 Like this one time these girls were talking about my speech, hearing, and clothes, they then texted me as I got home and apologized I didn't want to but my mom made me 😂 I went to school the next day saying "I'm over it yeah don't worry" and "oh no big deal were cool I guess" basically I was still kind of mad for a bit but luckily I ignored everybody that day 😂
Wish I had found this video earlier had this problem for years and finally got check about a month ago but been a bit scare I did just got out of surgery and still had so many questions but you just assure me this is the right way to go!! Thank you!!!

Thank you so much for posting this. I'm active duty and had severe hearing loss in my right ear, I have been dealing with this for going on 10 years and had numerous military doctors misdiagnose me. I recently (yesterday) met with a civilian ENT doctor and was diagnose with otosclerosis and recommended surgery. I'm very nervous about this and weighing the options, so again thank you so much for sharing your experience!

But all my right side hurt especially to swallow. My tongue feel numbed. So maybe is that. Give it time. How you feel ? Can you hear ? Did it hurt ? I am going this week so my surgen can remove my bandages.
irish9146 You’re good! I had mine two days ago and it’s like a numbness/ metallic taste it comes back!
I tried to join the Canadian Forces last year, passed some tests but failed the hearing test. Went to see some ENTs and learned that I have otosclerosis in my right ear. Your story definitely makes me want to pursue surgery. That's so exciting that you have regained so much hearing!!
This vid brought back great memories of when i had my ear operation 26 years ago.
Sometimes hearing loss is actually nice to have. Easy to get a better sleep. Easier to meditate. I have osteosclerosis since birth. I had the stapedectome on one ear at age 12, it worked wonders for my hearing. People tell me that i am a very intense person, i think they say this because i look people directly in the eyes and focus hard on eye contact and on reading lips and i speak loud right to peoples faces. Hard to describe.
Thank you for sharing! I have my surgery tomorrow I’m a bit nervous but your video put me to ease.
I’m 20y so glad that I stumbled upon your video while searching for otosclerosis, since I just found out yesterday that I have it. My audiologist said that I’ve 50% hearing loss in both of my ears. Hello.
I have the same problem with ears. Can you tell me about your surgery please?
I first began noticing hearing loss during my early 30s - around 2006. I finally went to an ENT in 2014 and was diagnosed with otosclerosis. I use Oticon hearing aids (which cost me $7200). I tried many other hearing aids including Phonak - but, the other hearing aids didn't work for music. Pretty much I have to wear my hearing aids to hear people talking to me. I know the operation is typically very successful - but, I'm *really* sensitive to sound - so I don't want the operation (basically I'm worried I will not like the outcome).
Had u surgery?

I'm 29, and have been diagnosed with otosclerosis for almost 6 month, i had booked an appointment with the ENT consultant to finalize the surgery bookings but pandemic began and everything stopped. I decided to use this gap to think and research more into the different aspects of stapedectomy procedure and ask you guys what are the risks associated with this surgery? Have you ever experienced any hearing difficulties after the operation? Is there any kind of activity that you are totally banned from because of the elaborate implant placed in the ear?

@@andreamartin6841, thanks so much! Since posting your video, has your hearing been improving even more?
Hey! Yes it has improved! It's not perfect, but going from 10% hearing (almost deaf in that ear) to 80% is more than I could have hoped for. The surgery changed my life for the better.
@@keerthy_mogadati Hi there! Yep, my hearing has definitely improved by quite a lot! As I mentioned to someone else, it went from 10% to at least 80%. My experience was very positive. I went under in a flash and just stayed at the hospital for a few hours afterwards as the surgeon wanted to check on me. Recovery at home was fine, but the medications made me very drowsy and I had headaches all week. All I wanted to do was sleep, so you might find the same thing happens to you. I took my prescription as instructed, but found that I needed an extra dose of pain killers (paracetemol and ibuprofen) which really helped manage my headaches.
I truly hope the results after your surgery will be massive and you'll have found it worth it. Good luck and let me know how things go!
Thank you for posting this. I just had my surgery three days ago. I have a similar story and am considering posting a video as well. I think this condition is actually more common now, a friend’s brother just had it as well. I wore hearing aids for the last 2 years but was feeling frustrated as my L (“better”) ear declined more. My original visit to an ENT was not great and my condition was very poorly explained. So now, 6 years later I saw a wonderful ENT who fully explained my condition and drew pictures. I don’t go back for my post op visit for about 10 days. I’m excited to hear your experience!
Hi, Andrea. Thanks for posting this. So many times in your video I said 'yuuuup!' and 'riiiiight?!'. Masks have made life even more difficult. We can't read lips anymore! I Just sat with a surgeon today and am moving ahead with the surgery. Probably be 6 to 12 months before it happens due to covid pushing elective surgeries waaaay back. Anyway, I see you posted this 2 years ago. How are you doing now? Both ears all done? Full surround sound hearing again? Hope all is well and thanks again for sharing your story.
Cheers!
Thanks for sharing the video, it's encouraging to hear success stories about this condition. I'm curious if you noticed any symptoms besides just hearing loss. For me I've been noticing reduced hearing for several years along with pulsatory tinnitus and occasional weird clicking sounds in my ear when i yawn or move my jaw around just right. I was diagnosed with otosclerosis just last week (thankfully only on the left side) and am waiting to hear from a surgeon about what my options are. Ive been reading what i can about the operation and have seen more than a few stories of people who have done it but the implant failed in some way after a few years. Also apparently there is a risk of puncturing the cochlea during the operation and losing hearing completely in that ear. Have you had any further hearing loss in the years since you had this done? Or recent hearing tests to conform everything's working properly?
Andrea thanks for posting. I am scheduled to have stapedectomy tomorrow morning vying I don't have covid19. I have had hearing loss since 26 and am now 56, so glad you didn't wait. Enjoyed your video.

Im so scared to do it. I work in retail and I feel you so much! Plus I am spanish and moved to London 4 years ago and its been and it is so hard. People dont realise of the fact of how many things I go through the day. Also I dont speak to much now as like you said its just frustrating and avoiding people makes it just easy... :'( I want to hear again properly but I am more than scared that I lose it completely. And also about the post surgery if I listen weird noises or too loud im scared to not be able to stop it T___T
Mainichi Japanese It’s so okay to be scared. We aren’t surgeons and how do we know that they won’t mess up? It’s the same as trusting someone to cut your hair. But you HAVE to. There’s so much sound that you’re missing out on planes, the ocean, conversations with people. I shut myself out too and I think that’s pretty common. It’s awful because no one understands like you do. Everything will be pretty loud for a week after but trust me it comes way down and it’s so comfortable. It’s hard to think that you couldn’t hear before the surgery. Hands down the best decision I’ve ever made in my life thus far and you will be okay and like I said in the video you DESERVE it. Your life will become so effortless when it comes to hearing especially working in retail. It’s a game changer!
I wwas scared too I was going to hear too much noises and I was going to give me a lot of headaches well I just got it done a week ago and is so worth it I recommend it. I am still in the process of healing but I can tell you something for sure I can hear perfect I can hear everything but like I say still in the process of healing is being only a week. So when I talk I can hear my self like I am under water. But remember for me is only being a week so.

Hello I just had my surgery on March 1st 2021 everything went well
I had the most amazing care in UCDAVIS HOSPITAL by doctor Diaz
So far I think it worked (I still have some dressing inside) but I do hear already ,the first two days the vertigo was horrible but is going away now . I’m so thankful the nurse asked me about my previous experiences with anesthesia so she suggested a patch behind my left ear to avoid nausea and vomiting I was so concerned about that
But that little patch solved my fear!
😃
Thankyou..im scheduled for an operation soon..feeling at ease a little now🇿🇦
How are you now
I just had mine yesterday and glad I got the surgery and was my first surgery ever. Anesthesia was great I went to sleep last thing I remembered was they were giving me stuff to calm me down then I was out.. woke up in observation I did get sick from the meds but I did feel better after zofran and started getting up slowly and eat when I could.. only thing that's bothering me is this little slab of skin the cut off from behind my ear to make a patch but I watched your videos and felt better about it
Katrina & Megan Rothbart thank for sharing. I had my left ear surgery on December 11th. How do you feel now? How’s the healing process and time? I still can’t feel comfortable after three weeks. I’m hearing better but feels like there is gap time in getting information from outside between left and right.
How much time it takes to notice hearing after stapedectomy?
Thanks for posting this video!
Sadly, hearing loss is an invisible disability - my younger sister has had severe hearing impairment since birth and has had to cope with unthinking and rude responses all her life.
Thank you so much for sharing. I am expecting to have my first operation soon and I am so scared. It's unreal to feel that you could potentially lose all your hearing! How are you feeling now?
How are you now Alba
Had mine, left ear October 6,2020. Slightly painful but can actually hear a little in left ear. Going Friday, to get packing out, and hopefully will regain hearing. I'll keep ya'll updated.
Just saw a 2nd specialist/surgeon this afternoon. I've chosen to go ahead and try the procedure. Pretty much a no-brainer for me. My hearing loss has been made even more difficult with everyone wearing masks. I had no idea how reliant I was on reading lips. Now, i'll be googling this topic for 6 mths until I get it done..
Has there been any pain after the procedure? Or dizziness/loss of balance? Let us know how everything turns out for you on friday. Good luck!
Всем привет ! А отосклероз может быть только на одном ухе ? Или он современем перейдет и на здоровое ухо ?
I got the surgery done 4 days ago, still do not hear very good with that ear, its still packed tough and have some episodes that the hearing was super loud, then it went away again.
Now I have had 2 days in row whistle shuiss sound on my operated ear.
They sayed that operation was success, so Ill give it time to heal.
No unexpected pain in the ear, that is big suprise, have not even taken painkillers.
So I think the recovery is individual and different for everyone.
I started having trouble at 15, and I noticed it when I would nap at my babysitting job waiting for the kids to get up. If I was right ear down, I couldn't hear the really loud grandfather clock tick. I was like you, I thought I had hosed my hearing listening to music. I was 35 and had a hearing test that showed significant loss in my right ear. I can't remember if the person who did the test, or the doctor that told me that the loss was conductive, and was caused by otosclerosis. He told me it was reparable by surgery. My insurance covered it back in 2003, so some maybe it is per Individual insurance. Funny thing is that I had my surgery around the time that Grissom on CSI also had otosclerosis. It was almost painful how well I could hear. I barely slept because it turns out that a freight train goes through at midnight, and that the freeway that is about 3 miles away has cars oh it all night long. Nearly 20 years on, it still seems to be working well, and I haven't needed to have surgery on my left ear.
I am glad I found this 2 days before mine
HI Andrea, thanks for posting this, I have not yet decided to have the surgery but strongly considering it. My issue is only with my left ear and I've been living with it for 20+ years. How are you doing now? Are there any long term side effects?
Hey Steve, it’s been over 5 years since both ear surgeries and the only think that I have even noticed is I’ll have to plug my nose and push air out every other day or so to expand my ear drums but I was a heavy smoker and for the past year or so I’ve switched to vaping. My are doctor told me I would have to do this though to inflate my ear drum because of the constant sucking I do. Other than that everything is still working wonderfully and because it was both of my ears, it’s changed my way of life significantly. Being that I was in my mid 20’s when I lost most of my hearing, it’s really helped. I know they told me probably in my mid 50’s I’ll need to get hearing aids and I’m okay with that!
Привет ! А правое ухо слышит на 100% ? У меня 4 года проблемы с правым ухом (
Which country do you live in? I live in Norway, I’m 50 years old and jut had a tympanoplasty operation, which is the closing of a perforated eardrum, and will later get a stapedectomy. I get both for free, paid by the state. It didn’t occur to me that people in other countries might not get this operation covered, because as you say, the total hearing loss that comes with otosclerosis is a major handicap. It is an absolutely necessary operation. Hearing aids is not an option, nor is doing nothing.
Hi Andrea. Thanks so much for taking time to explain all this. I have been experiencing pressure in my right ear and some ringing off and on over the course of a year or so. It’s just hard to hear people in a crowded restaurant or conversations in noisey places. I finally made an ENT appt today and an audiologist tested my hearing. I think everything was pretty good but my right ear had some minor hearing loss with low tones. I thought FOR SURE they were going to say I have ear wax build up because it just feels like when you fly and the pressure is built up and you hold your nose and blow to pop your ears open. It will pop some but for the most part my symptoms are mainly the feeling of a clogged ear with some pressure. No pain just always there and I can hear ringing and my voice inside my head when I talk or sing. The ENT doctor said both my ears were absolutely clean with no wax. So he could find no reason other then otosclerosis. He wants me to come back in 6 months to see how it progresses. My thing is you had significant hearing loss. I don’t. What other symptoms did you have? Mine is mostly uncomfortable mild pressure but nothing horrible. Just bothersome.
Also can you tell me more about the surgery. You said it was 4 hours. So 4 hours is rather long under anesthesia. Did you feel bad or sick or weird or dizzy upon waking up? Was there any pain after? I just don’t know if this is what I have for sure. I want to get a second opinion. I read the surgery can cause permanent deafness Thoughts on all this? I’m so glad this worked so well for you. You were brave. Thanks. Theresa
pagerus Hi Theresa! I think you should get a second opinion, or maybe another hearing exam. With otosclerosis it’s pretty easy to tell if you have it with a hearing exam because it’s a “conductive” hearing loss. So during the test when they put the sound directly through your ear canal you hear less than when they put the sound behind your ear (on the lower back of your skull). With otosclerosis you’ll never be completely deaf because you’re not hearing through your ears you’re bypassing that and hearing with the bones in your face or skull. It’s kind of crazy but it’s because it’s a middle ear problem. I’m not sure if you have otosclerosis if they couldn’t tell. You may have a different type of hearing loss that you’ll need hearing aids for. But if you do get another hearing test, make sure they do a conductive hearing test as well and it may help to rule somethings out. The surgery itself only took and hour and a half. I said four hours total so I had to be there at 6:30 and I was out by 9:30. But only under for and hour and a half. Waking up I wasn’t in any pain, my throat hurt a little and she gave me some water. I had my dad help me to the car and out when we got home because I was still pretty slow, maybe a little dizzy, after the surgery. They gave me pain killers for the week but I don’t do well on them so I just took Tylenol and it was just fine. Not much pain just some aching. After about four days it’s just itchy from the packing because all the fluids have dried up and just like a scab, it itches. I had pressure in my ear and some ringing. Its only been a year since you’ve noticed and mine was progressively getting worse over like two and half years so in 6 months to a year you might see more of a change and it may worsen and then they’ll be able to tell exactly what is causing it. I really hope this helped and you figure out what exactly is going on!!
pagerus Oh! The permanent deafness part! So they only do one ear surgery at a time. They do one and then wait 3 or more months to do the second just to make sure the first one healed up nicely and there weren’t any complications. In my mind, every surgery has some kind of complications and I believe it’s only a 10 percent chance that it won’t work which yes would suck but it’s one of those things that you just have to be Positive Polly about. The first one worked for me, I have my second surgery next week and that one might not go as well but I’m choosing to take the small risk in hopes that I get the reward of my hearing back. 🤞🤞
pagerus can you let me know what happened in your case ? Because I’m having 100% similar case like you
I'll be having a stapedectomy soon, was glad to hear a sucess story! In my case its just my left ear.
Thank you for sharing this great video it was very helpful
Hi Andrea. I'm glad I watched your video. It's very informative. I just have few questions. How's your hearing after the surgery? I already had a surgery done and it is called tympanomastoidectomy. Before I had that surgery, I already had moderate mixed hearing loss. I was hoping it would get better after the surgery. I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't had my hearing checked. Now after that my surgery, I had my hearing tested and the result is still the same. I'm wondering if you also had series of ear infections before your surgery. I'm kind of wondering if this surgery will help me improve my hearing. I suspect I also have this. I'm looking forward to your reply. Thanks.
JZ Cruz I never had ear infections, it just over time got worse and worse. I had 50% hearing in my left ear and now I have 90% hearing. I’m not familiar with the type of surgery you had for your ears but with otosclerosis it’s a conductive hearing loss. It’s supposed to be pretty easy to identify with just a hearing test. Basically I couldn’t really hear through my ear canal (like wearing ear plugs) , but even with ear plugs, as long as the sound is loud enough you’ll be able to hear something because the vibrations of the sound are hitting the bones in your nose or the back of your skull and sending that through your ear drum. It’s really crazy and I’m not a doctor but that’s the best explanation I can give you. Hope something out there can help you, good luck!
If u r going through this surgery i would suggest you to not go for this surgery if your age is below 25 or 30. Because there are chances of failure and it can affect ur career .. better go for it after 30s.
thank you so much for sharing, it is a motivational video for me to go for Stapedectomy. many thanks
Thank you for posting this. I'm at home recovering from the surgery on my right ear. So far, I've had little to no pain from the surgery. However, my balance is really messed up and I feel nausea. Hopefully that won't last too long. Did you have your other ear done? And was that surgery also successful?
Hey Andrea, you gave me hope. I feel that I will be need surgery as well on my left ear. I am so scared 😰
Uliana Lutcenko Dont let the fear stop you!!
I did my first operation 5 years ago. The tinites got less but it doesn't go away but my hearing really a lot better. Few weeks ago i just woke up with blood in my ear and now i can feel all the signs and pain i used to feel before the operation and also the tinites is back. I am waiting hearing test to find out if my hearing is getting worse.
what is your condition now?
Thanks for the video! I have also suffered with Otosclerosis for the last few years. I know exactlky whar you were going thru. Glad to hear your hearinng got improved dramatically. 2 weeks ago got my Stapedotomy. Yesterday for the first time After 2 weeks I feel some improvement. My Doc don't expect too much the first 4 weeks coz the ear needs to heal first. So im stoked! Hows with you now? Still hearing well?
How did it evolve since ?
Thank you Andrea for making this video and sharing your experience. Really helpful and encouraging.
Also have a question Andrea. Is it safe to do air travel after 2-3 months of surgery? Any specific guidance you received from your surgeon regarding this? Please share.
Thank u for sharing, i will olso do operation as soon!
I relate to this vid so much. Thank you
I had the surgery, first time on the right ear and all went well. Second surgery was 6 years later, on the left ear. The surgeon screwed up. He killed off the nerve. I was left with no hearing in that ear, 3 weeks of vomiting, the lost of my equilibrium. Which took a year of therapy to be able to walk on my own. I now only have 50 percent hearing on one side. It made my life a living he'll, so when a surgeon says there are only one percent chance of something going wrong, please please take that into consideration. Signed......the 1 percent!!!!!
Allure 2999
Thank you for telling!! Do you still have dizziness? I understand that now you have only one functional inner ear?
@@andreeabratucu6063 Hi Andrea, I only have my right ear and only 50%. On the left the doctor killed off the auditory nerve. So I will never have hearing in the left ear. I didn't have, what others describe as vertigo. I completely lost my entire equilibrium. After a year of therapy I could walk without holding on to something. 15 years later I.never gained my entire equilibrium a when I'm tired I can fall over for no reason.
Allure 2999 So sorry to see al the suffer. I have another living hell with permanent dizzines, pressures, and two interventions after 10 years from my first one. All because my implant fell of three years ago. And nobody know how to fix me. 🙂
@@Allure-zb1fn Am sorry to hear that. Was the left ear operated by the same surgeon who operated on your right ear? Should others watch out for any advance indications that might lead to complications?
@@raviv1565 Hi Ravi, the first doctor was not the same as second. Before surgery, my husband ask to see him after the surgery, it should have taken close to an hour and a half. After 40 mins he saw the surgeon sneaking out the back, that's one big indication. Secondly he knew I was throwing up before leaving and still discharged me. I don't know how this could be avoided, even after doing my research and the worst attrosity was him being upset at my next visit, because, as he clearly stated to us that "in 40yrs this has never happened to ME" so what he left me with wasnt much of a consideration. Other than advising everyone, to completely check their doctor out, reviews, other patients he's had etc. You need to be prepared to deal with the aftermath of being that 1%. Do not go into this lightly, do your homework and most importantly I am here, if you need help.
hi everyone, i was diagnosed with the disease like 10 to 11 years ago (am 42 yo woman). Did surgery on one ear but dont think it worked actually. My condition got worst lately but hearing aids still work best hopefully. If you want to see what the surgery is about go check on YT Dr Robert Vincent's page. He's a french surgeon doing videos in english and explain really well every type of otosclerosis he actually operates.
Just had my right ear done today... looking forward to see how my hearing improved once the packing is out
Sahil Ahuja Me too!! I hope you heal up well ❤️
how is your condition now?
@@andreamartin6841 i have also this disease i my both year could you help me in treatment ?
@@andreamartin6841 hi , is it painful after surgery????
@@Meme-is9ts No very minimal pain , I am experiencing load ringing in the ear.
Thanks for this. My wife has otosclerosis and we are deciding on the surgery after she gives birth.
I just had this surgery yesterday. I still have the packing in my ear, but my voice sounds louder. Curious to see how I feel once it's healed. Had it my whole life.
Hi there, hope you are doing well
..is the packing removed any update in hearing
@prathamesh bhadane it's been a month, no pain, use to my surroundings. Only trouble I have (and it's not a big issue) is there is significant vibration with loud noises in the one ear. I wonder if that is because my ear drum has not been used since birth. I suspect I lost my hearing then as there were delivery complications and I can't remember a time when I had good hearing. FYI, I had 2 broken bones according to the surgeon. No cutting, just pulled them out.
I'm 15 (I have otosclerosis in my right ear) and I had a stapedectomy when I was 8 in my right ear and had a follow up surgery on my right ear when I was 13. Recently I have been haveing pain in my right ear and have found out that a insane amount of scare tissue is in my right ear. I will be getting surgery to fight it soon.
I am a year behind on your comment here but i have alot of scar tissue too and been dizzy with alot of pulling pressure an mri said there was alot of scar tissue and the prosthetic stapes bone is in a little deeper than should be i just wanted to ask what other symptoms you may have had just want to know if its complications from stapes surgery or something else causing this torture .. and was wondering if you did get the scar tissue removed and if hopefully all went well after for you.
I love the video, very informative, I'm getting ready to have surgery in two days. :)
How are you now
@@meddz7294 doing great, had my surgery 11 months ago on my right ear. My hearing improved drastically. I am getting ready to get the same procedure on my left ear.
❤good luck with your next stapedectomy.
I had this surgery two weeks ago for the second time. I makes my hearing more bad than before the surgery.
I feel the same
I had my right ear surgery two weeks ago I can hear better now, but I have been feeling like my ears are clogged. Did you have this symptom after surgery
It's 2023 at this writing. Was wondering how much your surgery cost, and how you're doing today? Well, I hope.
God bless and be well.🙏👍
*Avoid getting a stapedectomy. You will regret it over time.* I was diagnosed with Otosclerosis in 1986, before my first surgery. My third surgery was a few years later. Now I wish that I had never undergone a stapedectomy. From my experience it went bad after a decade. In 2002 it became infected and after treatment I experience dizzy spells and loud tinnitus that has been ongoing until present day. Tinnitus is a form of torture. It will eventually drive you insane. Doctors don't want to help me. I'm being shunned by medical staff and it pisses me off to no end.
Thank you for sharing your experience and sorry to hear it, I really hope you feel better now. For my case I really wanted to do the surgery but my doctor told me it's late for it, just try to live with a hearing aid for the rest of my life, I'm very depressed about this but I cannot do anything about it, I have only 30yo so I'm afraid about the future and how to deal with it when I goes worse everyday.

Owh wow... so your surgery was done last tuesday??? Can you hear now??? How was your condition before
Mona Roofi so this morning was the 6th day so far I still have ringing in my ear but but last night was the first time I slept a full night since the surgery the ringing doesn’t seem as bad I still have the inner packing gel foam they called it. Didn’t have a fat patch done. I could hear with a hearing aid. I feel it’s the same or worse. I’m hoping that the inner packing is what is causing the prob with hearing I will find out tomorrow when I see the doctor.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I'm curious, did you or do experience tinnitus? I was diagnosed with otosclerosis in December. I have barely noticed any hearing loss, but my tinnitus is absolutely insane and debilitating. I am worried that I will if I get the surgery, I will be one of the people whose tinnitus gets worse. :(
I had surgery in my left ear for otosclerosis when I was 38 years old. I never operated the other side because I was left with an extremely loud tinnitus, which I still have but now in both ears. I was absolutely tormented trying to figure out how not to hear it for a year. Then one day I decided to lose my eyes and HEAR the sound. I paid fully attention to it. I told myself I was going to embrace the sound, observe it, and accept it. It was like a miracle. I stopped fearing it. I can’t explain to anyone how extremely loud it is (on both sides) but most of the time I don’t pay attention to it and I have adjusted. Later I learned that is the principle of mindfulness.
Ouch!
How is your tinnitus doing now ? Have you got the surgery ?
I have otosolorisis in my both ear with hearing loss 30-40% with good communication ..but what is make me crazy is the sound in my both ear hissing ringing and pressure and rushing ..so im so a afraid ..I only need to dont hear that noise .. and afraid of the operation make that noise wose
Ahmed ibrahim I had the same noises in my ears. Worse in my left but always a constant rush like waves that go with my heart beat and sometimes ringing. After getting my left ear done I no longer have those noises. I still have it in my right. It has to do with the pressure in your ear and when you get the surgery it should help relieve that!
Andrea Martin yes constant rushing sucks .. thanks Andrea
Did my right ear in January with barely any change. Doing the left one tomorrow. Hoping this one has better results.
hope ur second ear improved after surgery?
is it so?
Did you experience any pain? I have otosclerosis only in 1 ear and my hearing on that ear has always been worse than on the other, BUT I am still in normal range. My problem is the pain that I sometimes get which is provoked by touching the ear or around it. Like something inside shifts and affects the whole area. Also some loud sounds can be painful.
otosclerosis doesn't normally hurt

Disgusting is not the correct word
Guys undergone stapedectomy yesterday, feel like audible sometimes and not audible sometimes. Kindly share your experience those who underwent surgery. How may days will take to restore normal hearing kindly tell me guys.. please please..
As for otosclerosis not getting worse, that's not true. Every time I had a baby, it got worse. Also every time I stopped breastfeeding. Basically every time my body experienced a hormone surge. This would include puberty, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and menopause. So I started losing my hearing at 16 and it had progressed since then significantly. (I'm 27 and have 3 babies)
Hall About Family didn’t say it wouldn’t get worse. It can only get worse to a certain point because eventually you’re no longer hearing through your ear canal you’re hearing through the vibration of your bones. Mine got progressively worse over two years. But mine had gotten so bad that I was no longer hearing through my ears I was hearing through the vibrations in the bones in my skull. (Nose, behind ear, exc.). So yes, with otosclerosis you will never be completely deaf because your body uses other bones to project the sound but it can be progressive.
It also mimics fetal development which means that surgery can reverse during and post pregnancy
@@melrose465 which is why I waited until after I had my children to start the process of surgical revision. I am actually seeing an ENT next month to schedule surgery
@@andreamartin6841 I have been dealing with it for 14 years now, and while I am not 100% deaf, I cannot hear without my aids. Literally only very loud noises. So it can get pretty darn significant.
