Thank you for doing this video. I love seeing different types of lenses on zve1. I have tried APSC lenses on mine. It works perfectly fine, but I hated having to zoom in every time I turn the camera off. The 20 mm 1.8 is king for me
I really appreciate that, and I completely get that... The 20 is still probably the best lens that I own; it's hard to beat! However, if I could design a prime lens, maybe a full frame 18mm f1.4 would be the dream... And if I could design a zoom, it would be a full frame version of the 16-50 maybe a constant f/4 (to be realistic). Imagine a compact, power zoom 16-50 like that!?

@@BrianCatalano that would be the dream. I’m still trying to look for a full frame lens that would be compact enough but as you know, they are quite large. Plus if Sony came out with one, it would cost quite a bit. Keep up the good work. Just subscribed to your channel.

Excellent video Brian! Your review(s) of various kit lenses, their quality and focal ranges is something a lot of folks overlook and/or don't bother with...interesting to see what one can find out there. Am sure you've heard the rumors about 2 different A7c's being released...if the A7cR is what it is...I'm going to be real tempted to pick one up (of course depends on how much it costs!), having a high megapixel for as my "backcountry hiking" camera for landscapes would be perfect. Yes, if there is an A7CR, I too would be tempted... However, my presumption is that it will be at minimum $1000 more than the A7Cii at $3298 (purely speculation), but would be worth every penny. I personally think that's too many MP for my needs, but I know if I had my hands on it, also with 8k, I'd be convinced otherwise!
I could imagine though for somebody like yourself that while hiking with a super lightweight compact body, where every ounce of added weight matters, it's a dream camera!
I'm really intrigued to see if this rumor turns out to be true... Here's hoping!

I didn't get the 28-60 but I have used that 16-50 lens on my APS-C Sony cameras for years and it's solid for a kit lens. Thanks for the video!

im on the same boat having just bought an a7c ii with the 28-60mm. trying to shave as much weight as possible and am considering the 16-50mm crop lens to save 50g and also get a wider view for handheld selfie and group selfie shots (i don't vlog). your video helped me understand the vignetting issue and drawbacks. i'll still get it second-hand though if i can see a great deal.. so thank you!
I have actually been using the 16-50 on the A7Cii and am loving it. Its so small and versatile...and because of the higher resolution and more MP, I don't mind being in crop mode!
(And there's no vignetting!)

Great video Brian. you definitely put some food for though there regarding these kit lenses. I personally use the sony 24-240 when I'm on the go. It looks ridiculous outside. Indoors, Samyangs 35mm f1.4 is my go-to lens.

@@BrianCatalano The sony 24-240 is a great all round lens. its wide, and the tele is good. and the built in IS helps. Its kind of big though. I wish they could make a 16-300 F1.4 wouldn't that be something?
I have version 1 of samyang 35. Its in most of my "talking head videos".

You got me thinking, I used to be at 30mm (cropped 20) for my talking head, and now I'm on my Samyang 24mm f1.8... but I sort of wish it was at 35. I may see if there's any deals on that version 1 then, as your A roll looks great!
thanks for this video, been working on a project to figure all the aps-c lenses + dynamic stabilization, I happen to have this lens, although I cant figure where I put it 😆. The sony 10-18 works through the whole range (without hood), the sigma 10-18 f2.8 is the gold standard, works through the whole range (without hood), @ 8:23, that looks like it can use some surgery, square vignette is not natural, there is an obstruction.
Really appreciate you checking out this video and now looking forward to your breakdown! It sounds like you've experimented as much as I have with APSC plus dynamic stab., if not more, so can't wait to hear your findings... except for I'm sure you're probably going to convince me to buy more lenses that I don't need! The 10-18 f2.8 does sound perfect!
Also, I completely agree with you on 8:23. I included that segment to show how the vignetting looks in higher frame rates, and I ended up liking the frame--had that 3:2ish open gate feel. That being said, you could crop it that way if needed, but I typically only shoot 4k 120fps with a full frame lens on it for that reason.

@@850Tech yes, it's sharper than the 16-50 APSC kit lens...but less sharp than the 28-60 full frame kit lens!
Is the Dynamic stabilization any worse with the apsc kit lens compared to the FF kit lens? I kinda remember seeing some videos complaining about an apsc lens producing some jitter compared to the FF lens. But I am not even sure it was a Sony apsc lens or 3rd party. (btw, is Dynamic stabilization influenced by Sony vs 3rd party lens?)
I think you may be hearing right, as from what most people report that native Sony full frame lenses work best... However, in my experience after Sony released their first firmware update to the camera, I didn't notice any major jittering issues with any lenses, third party or APSC. For me, dynamic stabilization in the zve1 is the best stabilization in any full frame camera without question... Yet, it isn't perfect but it's way better than everything else that I've experienced. Obviously the hope is to get it to action cam smoothness and it seems to be going in that direction.

I use my 16-50 a lot as a travel lens... Then maybe consider what focal range you find yourself using most and then either get a fast prime or a full frame zoom like a 24-70!
@@BrianCatalano I need something light and small if possible... I was now even considering another apsc zoom lens with more reach (16-70 f4 OSS) as I don't need the 16-24 range anyway and f4 would be nice enough
@@simoz78 I fully support the idea of using APSC zooms on the zve1 as some have surprising amount of minimal vignetting on full frame, especially with stabilization on. I have also been considering the 18-50 f2.8... I don't understand why Sony hasn't made a more compact full frame zoom or even updated this kit lens!
Stuck in a situation where the 16-50mm is my only option for my Zv E10, stuff is so hard to get here in 🇯🇲
I'm sorry to hear that, I can imagine that's frustrating... it's still not a bad lens to be stuck with for the ZV-E10, but I'd rather have the option to choose it and not be forced to have it. What lens would you get?

Have you bought a Sony camera on buyee? Is there any risk that the menu can't be changed to English language?
That's a really good question, and I have not bought a Sony camera and would have previously not thought this would be a concern, but a friend of mine just bought a Sony ZV-E1 in a camera shop in Korea and it was region locked and there was no option for an English menu. I didn't realize that they even did that, so I probably would be careful about buying a camera from Buyee unless it's clear that you can change the language. I also don't know if a Korean camera might be different from one manufactured for a Japanese market or if this is a new issue... Regardless, I have only bought lenses via Buyee without issue, but it is something to think about. Thanks for bringing that up!
I just picked up the 28-60 on eBay for 209.00. I needed it for travel.
That's a good deal for that lens, but generally a fantastic deal for any autofocus, native Sony zoom lens that's as sharp as it is compact. I really do love it and hope you do too. Again, my only thing I don't like about it is that it is only 28mm at its widest and you can zoom in or out smoothly... But for $200, amazing!

FYI, i found the lens, and if you remove the baffle, you will have 20-50 completely free and clear, no hard vignetting at all with dynamic stabilization.
I had heard you could do that but was too scared to attempt (and I don't think I had the right tools). Have you done that with any other of your APSC lenses? It seems more difficult with newer lenses...
@@BrianCatalano I stripped the sigma screws 😂, only the two sony’s both gone through the baffle removal. Look up Moody Tools 58-0257, one of those bits fits the lens screws. Has to be the exact one, i stripped the sigma because i got lazy and didn’t look for my set of proper tools. Basically any lens, it will be 4 mount screws followed by three baffle screws on the underside.

I can't tell about the kit lens on FF but the one on APS-C sucks. you don't get to notice until you start using some quality glass.
Yes, you are right and in no way are these kit lenses replacements for high quality glass as if you have the budget, I do recommend getting the best you can. However, many people do have tight budgets or are just beginning their entry into learning photography or videographers, and in those instances, these kit lenses are a great value for how versatile and compact they are. I would also say the full frame 28-60 is actually really sharp, and surprisingly quite good... It's just not very bright and the focal range is odd.
Sony 16-35 pz f4 could be an great option for you.
Yes, that's a fantastic option as well. However I'm curious if that focal range is enough!? I wonder if a 24-50 would be better...

i bought 2 primes just to forget about this lens. it sucks.
I get that, 90% of my lenses are primes and faster than f/2.8, but for $65 as a compact, versatile zoom for traveling, it's been good for me in a pinch. If I'm shooting for a client though, I usually reach for a prime!

I love Christopher Frost, he's definitely one of my favorite lens reviewers, and for that reason and due to the fact that he's so recognizable that if ever I don't have b-roll of a lens because I don't own it, I will use his and of course credit him.
I'm not sure if you noticed but my videos are scripted and recorded prior to editing and adding b-roll, so of course I would not even conceive of retroactively recording myself to verbally credit b-roll (for redundancy?) when it's written in a graphic unless it's part of the narrative.
I don't think it's a bad idea at all, but completely unnecessary for my personal work flow--nor is there any ethical standard to do so... Yet, it's a good idea, and I fully support you if that's the type of video you want to make. I could see that working for someone else... Cheers!
WORST kit lens ever.
That might be true, there's been a lot of bad kit lenses throughout the years, but even so, for $60 it's nice to have on hand since it's so small!
