      Another notable Holden car was the VL Commodore, many of which featured a Nissan RB30 straight six. Very smooth driving early fuel injected car, looking similar to this but with a slightly longer nose. Very popular cars over here, easy to work on and reliable too. You can stand up in the engine bay! :D

    I worked for Holdens (GMH) at the Elizabeth plant South Australia when this model came through, i was on what they called the trim assembly line, i put in the door handles and other trimmings on the left side while my co worker did the right side. Work started at 7.30am - 4pm, 40 hour week and my pay packet was pretty good. I'd knock off work and hop into my 1963 AP5 valiant and go home. :)

      Such a narrow minded view. Every country that manufacturers cars gets government assistance. Other wise the likes of Germany wouldn't be making cars. Plus there was a return on that government assistance. This government wouldn't support the auto industry Leaving in to the free market, But is putting up over 3.8 billion dollars to make weapons for export to kill and mame people. Guys, the problem is not the tax dollars going to them, the problem is that GM lied. They took our 3 billion then fucking closed down anyway. They were paid to stay but left anyway. THAT is the waste of money, not the fact they were given enough that the cost of making these cars meant that everyone could have had one for almost free and not $40k. They already had their "global plan" in place and being executed, (it should have been obvious back when the craptiva was being sold here), it didn't matter how well manufacturing was done here, they wanted every country to be importing and selling the same thing from what is the garbage of euro trash vehicles.

    • @angrysausagedog
      @angrysausagedog Před 6 lety +2

      @Shane, The Rekord was made before the VB, as was the Opel Senator, Holden Australia's die press plates where actual a mix of the (Post design - in production) Opel Senator front cut and the (already released) Opel Rekord, with a lot of panels just straight up being imported and just assembled here.

    • @DansModelBench
      @DansModelBench Před 6 lety +4

      Yeah that is where it started, but the Opel mule Holden used, literally fell into two parts on some testing here. Quite a bit was done to strengthen the car and adapt it to a local drivetrain. While some cosmetic pieces like the doors and some trim were interchangeable, not much else was in the end between the Holden and the Opel. As the years went on, less and less fit, until the clean sheet design with VE Commodore.

      Holden used the Rekord from the A-pillar to the rear. The front is Senator/Viceroy. The Australian engines wouldn't fit in the Rekord and they wanted to use a big radiator and rack and pinion steering.

      Just to add to your comment about the G8 Pontiac/Commodore. . The version you have isn't the std of what we got here in Aust, i worked in the gmh line at the time and it (your G8) is equipped with much more gear better trim levels, big Brembo brakes, motorised tilt headlights , mph dash etc lol. Our 'go fast' HSV is the nearest top spec we built (basically a V8 SS with a flash tune and body kit) but was still a lower spec than your car. UK got the same model from HSV and then wound it up more thru their VXR tuning factory. The weirdest thing was the USA model was better and the same price as our base V8, even with import duty it would be cheaper to bring one back to Aust. ..except the LHD bit! I'm not a Holden person but that resto looks spot on , top job 👍

    I love the styling, especially for 1979. Looks like Australia didn't have the ridiculous bumper safety standards on cars that the US did over here and you could get bumpers that were proportionate to the car. It looks like it has some German design influence too especially from the rear. Japanese sedans seemed to borrow heavily from this style in the '80s. Really cool car. Thanks for sharing.

    My dad bought one of these cars back when they first came out (traded the HR Holden) and I can remember it was a very smooth car to drive and somewhat refined compared to what had come before it. Ours was the 6 cylinder auto version, blue in colour. I drove it a lot when I first got my licence and I was allowed to take girls out in it (say no more!). The build quality was terrible when we got it as I remember compiling a long list of faults to be presented to the dealer to be fixed under warranty. I believe they did sort these out though. From memory the car was extremely reliable and taken on many long trips. My Mum sold it in the late eighties after Dad died and I'm not sure what happened to it after that. Thanks Scotty for featuring this article and bringing back some great memories of some classic motoring (and other things!).

    So nice to see one preserved. They used to be such a common sight on Aussie roads. This body style was based on two different German Opel models rolled into one. The Rekord and Senator with the front end of one and back of the other combined. Holden widened the body slightly as well.
    Unfortunately the cheaper L and SL models still used the ageing and terribly pollution gear affected inline sixes, which were developed in the beginning of the 1960s and were good engines until emission standards came in 1976. Power plunged. Multi point EFI option helped it to claw back that lost power in 1984 for its last two years before the Commodore received a brilliant Nissan sourced inline six.
    This car features the venerable Holden 308 V8, developed by Holden in 1968. A thoroughly reworked multi point EFI version, known as the 304, was introduced with the VN model, around 1989 and this was the V8 offering until the VT series II around 2000 and was replaced by the Chevrolet sourced Gen III alloy V8. Motoring critics said this new V8 was lacking in low down grunt compared to the outgoing 304 V8 which had much more tractable torque delivery that Australians favour. Power arrived much higher in the rev range in this Gen III V8. Oil starvation issues also reared their head due to the car driving on the other side the road and cornering harder on left turns instead of right.

      It was actually Opel itself that had this car available in Europe before it came out in Australia. The Opel Commodore was available with a 4 cylinder 2.0E and an inline 6 cylinder 2.5E. Holden did widen the body a bit and made room for the V8 under the hood, because originally the car was not designed for it.

      James French I'm impressed by your knowledge. The emission standards you mention were Australian Design Regulation 27 A (ADR 27A) and the worst hit were actually small cars. Compare a Mazda 1300 to a '77 323 or the Corolla which became the slowest 4 door sedan available in 1977. Surprisingly, the Honda Civic came out unscathed, simply because it's efficient little transverse engine was remarkably garbage free to start with.

      Andy K. UK It was a more luxurious version of the Carlton. The Vauxhall Senator came after the Royale which was basically an Opel Senator. Royales are also extremely rare now. Then Vauxhall started using Opel names, I think the Senator was the first one to use an Opel name. Confusingly Opels were sold over here too in the late 70s, early 80s. I don't think Holden ever made an Opel Senator/Vauxhall Royale equivalent.

    This model commodore is getting very rare here. I live in the mid-north region of South Australia, & have seen just one of these in the last 5 years. Just an interesting piece of trivia for you people. The early commodores were designed in Germany, & based on the UC Torana/sunbird floor pan. The German variants were the Opel Viceroy, or Berlina. I know this as one of my friends were working for Holden Australia when these were first assembled here. The 6 cylinder ones had either a 2.85 litre, or 3.3 litre engine. The V-8 ones were either a 4.2, or 5 litre.

      I love the idea of smaller rear wheel drive cars (like older BMW's, the 77 Holden Gemini and so on, but I'm guessing that thanks to a whole new safety regulations, they need to make them different now. The BRZ/Scion/86 is a great start, but rear seat space on these are terrible. Those older rear wheel drive cars where quite comfy and practical.

      The dual exhaust it kinda has will have a improvement over a standard exhaust system, giving better performance and mileage but the reason they probably stuuf it into that small muffler at the rear of the car is probably to keep Low end torque and Quiet. the car will be significantly quieter than with a dual exhaust , but still leaving the opportunity for a Car enthusiast to Remove the Rear Muffler and extend out the the dual exhaust for People that wish to do so.

      Growing up, every second car on the road seemed to be one of these, built between 1978 and 1983. Later cars used the same overall body, but the feel of the car changed somehow. The VK of 1984 was stupendously ugly and very under-developed because Holden were nearly bankrupt.
