  • UK extreme metal legends Carcass release one of the year’s most anticipated metal albums, Torn Arteries. Ferocious and uncompromising in their execution, Carcass’s ability to intricately dissect the innards of death metal, and display them for us to sonically understand has been their point of excellence for over three decades. Torn Arteries sits as a bookend on the modern side of the band's discography, connecting directly back to where everything began over 30 years ago.
Will it live up to the hype?

The godfathers of goregrind release one of the year’s most anticipated metal albums, does it live up to the hype? Let us know your thoughts on Torn Arteries.

Btw, the band aren't vegan anymore... They're vegetarian (there is a difference). They said it was too hard to stay fully vegan in the interviews for their back catalog remasters.
Anyway, I agree with Manuel. Calling them Grindcore, really at any point other than maybe their first and second album is doing a disservice to their music. I'm well aware of the connection to Napalm Death, but Napalm IS Grindcore... So labelled by their own drummer. Bill made a conscious effort to take Carcass in a different direction than his time in Napalm, and Necroticism Descanting the Insalubrious is nothing like Utopia Banished. I mean I could keep going, like how Extreme Noise Terror, Terroriser, and Brutal Truth are more troo Grindcore than Bolt Thrower for sure. I know for sure that Jeff Walker hates the Grindcore label, whether it's escapable or not is another story.

I am perhaps in the minority in that I feel that Swansong and Wake Up and Smell The Carcass have some of their best tracks and I love that some of that mid-90s Carcass death n roll found its way onto this album. In fact, Torn Arteries is probably the Carcass album I would show someone if they were just getting into them for the first time - it doesn't really break much new ground but it showcases a little bit of every great moment and sound they've had throughout the years - all in one complete package.
I think that no matter which album you boarded the Carcass train on, you'll find something to enjoy about it

Sounds like I’m going to really enjoy this and there’s no surprise there, but a little confused by the review TBH. I don’t think Carcass have really been “goregrind” or even “grindcore” since “Descanting the Insalubrious”, have they? It’s a pretty huge part of the Carcass story that they reinvented their style as melodic dearth metal, even while still retaining complete distinctiveness as Carcass.
I love both eras of Carcass, I just would’ve expected to hear Sam acknowledge that. They’re just not a goregrind band anymore, by any stretch of the imagination.

    • @supremelordoftheuniverse5449
      @supremelordoftheuniverse5449 Před 2 lety +11

Yes! Exactly. I had to check twice if I was hearing it right. Carcass certainly did Grindcore but they completely flipped their sound (which, as you well noted, is actually a big part of their story and importance/contribution to metal). Sam goes as far as calling this specific álbum goregrind. Confusing indeed

Great review! Carcass is, and will forever be, my absolute favorite band. Torn Arteries is a great album. It's a VERY different Carcass record. BUT, they are ALL very different Carcass records! That is one of the wonderful things about this band; they never fail to deliver the goods, while remaining true to themselves and constantly trying new things. Bill's guitar-work is incredibly soulful on this recording. Lastly, it's so refreshing, that in 2021, Carcass is releasing an album that sounds, sonically like an actual band, playing together. The guitar tone is organic and not over processed or over edited, and the drums sound like DRUMS. Real, live, well recorded DRUMS. Thank you for the killer reviews and the amazing contribution to the Metal community, BANGERTV! \m/

Papa Dunn, nice to see you back! I liked it almost as much as you did. Your review was pretty good. I guess I was a bit more critical of it, but not by much. I would’ve wanted even more catchier songs (I know, I’m in the minority but I love the catchiness of Swan Song). Something like Long Winding Bier Road from the Despicable EP for example, that type of catchy. Sometimes I found them to be too in the weeds of the style. But it’s actually nice to have a record like this, that challenges the listener just a bit.
Nonetheless, I basically gave it your score. It’s pretty good!

Great review, I just finished a full playthrough twice and what can I say.
I didn't know what heavy was until I heard Heartwork way back when, and since Carcass have become firmly entombed as one of my Mt Rushmore alltime top bands.
For me this one's a step up from Surgical Steel as it encompases more of thier overall sounds throughout the years, almost like an ode to themselves with tongue firmly impaled in cheek, containing snippets from all their various iterations (even within the same song!) with a dash of Steer and Walkers other bands (Firebird, Blackstar) to boot.
No other band does it quite like Carcass, between Steers masterful riffs and Walkers much underrated lyrics and delivery, it really is amazing to see them still delivering at this standard soem 30yrs later.

My only gripe is Jeff Walkers vocals seems to be dialed back :(. the space that allowed in the songs u mentioned is amazingly done. The lack of that punch metallic sound that Surgical had was disappointing at first but on the 2nd listen through it clicked. The harmonic/pentatonic scale usage with a blues flare is amazing. Great review, we all miss the blasting of reek and symphonies but carcass never really dissapoint. They own the genre of rot and roll and when the blasts do come in it's like a reward.

Honestly, swansong is still my favourite record next to heartwork. I know I’m prob the odd man out on this but the riffs on swansong are just so catchy to me. Anyone else?

Swansong is an awesome album for sureeee. The groove can't be denied on that album. That being said, I hear a lot of Swansong style riffs in Torn Arteries....so this one may hold a special place for you as well! :)

Im metalhead for all my life. Into metal for more than 30 years. Lately I missed, didnt have time for new music, since this came out. This for me is the best thing that came out for a very long time. After listening to radio stations working on something and during car drive to job not much time I spend on listening music, no new music to me is known, new bands and stuff. This Carcass album Im listeting all the time, every f second Im free Im listen to Torn Arteries. To me this is best HM album in a very long time. Man, very very long time. AOTY, Band OTY, Bill Steer GOTY. Pure gold.

Not to be "that guy", but... The Grindcore element hasnt really been as present as it once was for sometime now. And while there is still a little of that, I feel like it's definitely closer to their Melodic death metal and groove stuff they did in the middle of their career with heartwork and swansong. Sorry, just don't really see this as a "Grindcore" album.
    Regardless, nice review though.

Same. Carcass haven't been considered grindcore or goregrind (Sam said both) since Symphonies of Sickness. Album seems pretty good so far but the cover is terrible.

Absolutely great return by Carcass🤘 Love everything they have done. For those that are still disappointed by the lack of putrefaction/SoS grind on the new albums, there are plenty of other bands still carrying the torch in this department. Try Pharmacist, Crash Syndrom and Sick Sinus Syndrome

Long time of fan of carcass!! I remember buying a used cassette of symphonies of sickness in early 93 . I was a junior in highschool and man that's all listened for months. Then I sought as much of there material as I could. Ken Owen changed the way I played drums. And bill steer the riff master wow. They never disappoint 😊

Whilst I love Carcass and this sounds good there's a lack of surprise. Just listened to Aborted's new one too & that has a pile of 'whoa' moments where the new Carcass seems safer. Which I think Carcass has been post Descanting which I think is peak.

I got to agree. I'm still evaluating this album since I listen to it 1 or 2 times a day since it came out. I must say that the album has Heartwork or even more Swangsong elements to it, but this time Carcass mixes all albums and doesn't do melodeath when the album before it was grindcore. So I still have to evaluate, but it has the elements to become one of the best albums of this year to me!
