In my opinion Sepultura is THE best heavy metal band in the world right now and Eloy Casagrande is THE #1 drummer. His playing is extremely technical, physical, powerful, explosive and dynamic. Andreas Kisser is an exceptional guitarist and his work on Quadra is probably his best work so far. Paulo Jr. is an old school bassist who just seem to get better and better. Derrick Green is in his top vocal form here and has proved persistence is key to success. The Brazilian band have made their name in creativity and Quadra is no exception, this time with symphonics, a better production and a bigger sound than ever. These four guys deserve all the respect for keeping and improving the Cavalera legacy. I was never a big Metallica or Slayer fan growing up. Popular amongst the other metal kids at school, but, for me, Sepultura were by far and away superior to any other '80s Thrash I could get my hands on.
For me, it was the opposite. In Brazil, people have loved Sepultura since mid 80s. I never saw anything special on their music. I always saw them much below the second wave of thrash bands like, for instance, Death Angel or even Forbidden. Also, their lyric content has always been like an empty vessel, though that is a problem with most of the rock/metal bands. Now, they have a great vocalist and drummer, but that is not enough to make me get into the band.
In Portuguese "Quadra" means different things: Block, sports court, quartet and quartile. But it also means a coin during the Roman Empire. Interesting.
I share nearly all of your statements in this review Sam, but I think this is a 5 skull album. The songwriting is superb and the drum and guitar work is novel and cool. I think this is the best metal album I heard since This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore (best album of the 2000’s IMO). I’m saying it here, this is my album of the 20’s, don’t think anything better will be released in the next 10 years.

This album definitely surprised me after several lackluster releases from them in the last few cycles. I loved their old albums... and I honestly enjoyed Green's first albums with the band as well. Nation and Roorback are actually 2 of my favorite albums from Sepultura in general, so the fact that this album goes back to that "melodic thrash" style... along with some fresh nuances (orchestras, choirs, and progressive moments), has really helped them to put out a monstrous release. I wouldn't be against calling it one of the best modern metal albums in quite some time.
The best review ever! I´m a huge fan of you. I´m a Sepultura fan since ever... QUADRA is awesome. I can´t wait to see how it sounds LIVE. I need a concert I need to hear QUADRA alive.
Loved Seppers in the 90's, wasn't keen on Roots, but the bands last few albums going in a proggish direction dragged me in. Loving the progression of their song writing (pun intended).

Sepultura is a taste I acquired during the pandemic lockdown. The conceptual meaning behind Quadra (Latin): quatro (Portuguese, Spanish) = 4 (four). Guitarist Andreas Kisser explained that the concept of the album is based on Quadrivium, which are the four subjects or arts (namely arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy) taught after teaching the trivium. (wikipedia) Based on this, the band divided the 12-track album into four sections of three songs each. The first being thrash metal songs, based on the classic Sepultura sound. The second section is inspired by the groove-percussion oriented sound the band explored in Roots. The third part has more progressive songs (…), but it’s not all instrumental tracks. Side four features slow-paced and melodic tracks. (wikipedia) Quadra is a concept album so titled because its 12 songs are divided into four groups of three songs each. Each grouping showcases a different aspect of the band's musical persona. (allmusic)
It sounds amazing, incredibly technical and gripping, but It will take me a while to get into it because I find some songs from the last two albums more memorable ( manipulation of tragedy and sworn oath), the overall sound of the album is stronger though.
Those old school max vocals and the overall production were a huge part of their sound Even if they make a new thrash record, it won't stand out of the others in the genre because of the generic production in the metal music industry right now
Nisindu Perera wrong, sounds nothing like other more modern plastic ”metal” bands, Sepultura still sounds like Sepultura to this day and Quadra is awesome
@@PetePohjanniemi I don't dislike the record at all I really love the progressive nature in Quadra They've still got their vibe but the guitar tone is not very good imo Maybe because I'm still living inside the early sepultura days (cuz I really love the death/thrash thick guitar tone) I have to give it a few more listens though

Nicolas Aguiar I gave 84 in my 100 pts scale 😊
Easy 4 1/2 for me and probably in my top 5 Sepultura albums. I don't see the point for them to make another BTR or Arise.
Strange point to make, considering that they can't. Max left a long time ago.
A masterpiece!!!! Unbelievable what they created with this album!!!
They're good but not better than slayer
Kisser's work is absolute gold on every single Sepultura album. Such a great musician and songwriter, one of the greatest ever in the metal scene.
Underrated.
Chaos A.D. over 25 years ago...many stellar albums since...
Benjamin Decker bold statement
@@BangerTV haha, I have a tendency towards grandiose statements. I really feel they are killing it here though. I have listened to it like 15 times since it's out (like continuously:)
it is a great and fun album.
I'm an old fan who has not bought any of their records since Chaos A.D.
But you have convinced me to invest my hard earned on them again. Great review.
Andy H right?
I couldn’t even name an album since chaos but excited now to hear this thing man🤘
@@gleneckert1 same here. The good old days.

The years gone by and since the 80's sepultura is a brazilian pride cheers from belo horizonte - br (homeland from sepultura)
Great review of a record album, great band of all times. They remind us that the only constant during the time is the "change".
🤘😎🤘👋😊🇺🇾
The drummer of my band is the current drumtech for Eloy now, and he constantly says that he looks like totally another person behind the kit, as if he was possessed. And, Quadra can also refer to the number four.
Man this album is the revival of sepultura in world stage, the technical level grew up exponentially
I totally disagree with the D. Green haters...he has great cut to his vox...he shines on this album...seen em live, seen Soulfly, seen Cavalera Conspiracy...
Sep still puts on a great show
I come from brazil ..today is friday and when i finish to work i go home and listen the álbum..is very great ..
Thank u Sam Dunn and welcome back home to reviews. Derrik is a much better voice for sepultura than max was when he became "dry" for his duties in the band. Quadra sounds like a well rounded album. Worth buying/downloading. Again Sam dunn, thanks!
Hi Sam..great review! Iam from Brasil and I am am old headbanger with 50years old. I started listening Sepultura since the beggining. After the Max era..this is my return of the band. I have never been accepted Derrik on vocals..today he have my redemptention ..Quadra is one of the best albuns ever..side by side of Arise or Beneath the Remains...mu opinion..regards from Brasil and.take care!
Obra-prima ou, in english, masterpiece.
Loved Seppers in the 90's, wasn't keen on Roots, but the bands last few albums going in a proggish direction dragged me in. Loving the progression of their song writing (pun intended).
Andreas has been crushing it lately!!! Last 3 records he’s been AMAZING!!!!!!
This is a great album! I've seen these guys live three times and they are absolutely epic
Best Sepultura album in a long time. Definitely a great album. I give it 5 out of 5. This is a masterpiece. Yeah, Arise/Beneath The Remains level masterpiece.
Im reeeally proud to see one of the bests brazilians bands of all time here in BTV. Ill love to see a review of metal bands in Brazil these days!! Greetings from here! :D
Eloy Casagrande made the difference in Sepultura.
Porra, mano, se vai escrever inglês, melhora ai hahaha Maked ? *Made, porra... xD....*Difference

lindo! Sepultura é orgulho do Brasil!
Sepultura do Brasil! Orgulho demais desses caras.
(wikipedia)
Based on this, the band divided the 12-track album into four sections of three songs each. The first being thrash metal songs, based on the classic Sepultura sound. The second section is inspired by the groove-percussion oriented sound the band explored in Roots. The third part has more progressive songs (…), but it’s not all instrumental tracks. Side four features slow-paced and melodic tracks. (wikipedia)
Quadra is a concept album so titled because its 12 songs are divided into four groups of three songs each. Each grouping showcases a different aspect of the band's musical persona. (allmusic)
Thanks Sam, I'm just about to dive in. As a fan from back in the "Beneath" and "Chaos" days, I'm really looking forward to this. Cheers \m/
You will dig it!!!
Eloy gave them new breathing!! Now we can say we have a new and real Sepultura!! Awesome!
Sou das velhas viúvas do sepultura. Escuto até o chaos 93 com frequência.... Mas fico feliz com essa obra. Viva o metal!!!
Dante is a badass record
Man, álbum absolutely amazing!
Unreal!
Another great review by Sam! Absolutely on point, great argumentation and very interesting reads on the whole album.
I bought my CD here in Brazil!!!! The biggest brazilian band!
just got the vinyl, is just an amazing album
Even by Sepultura's high standards this is the tightest they've sounded in a while. Early candidate for album of the year. Outstanding!
I do like Quadra, my favorite sepultura album of last years - and thanks to YT we can watch Eloy destroying drums in many songs, epic!
I´m Brazilian, I´m so fucking proud cuz this Great Band! Thanx Sam!
Great review!!!!!!!! Let’s go SEPULTURA
Even if Max is not in the band this album still kicks ass
Best album in a looooong time.
Best album since Machine Messiah!
Not so long. To me it isn't better than "The Mediator...".
Great review! I thought maybe it would be recorded in quadraphonics. :D Seriously, it's a great effort. It's the right thing for the band to do.
Listened to it this morning thought it was great. Also, not huge fan of instrumentals but Pentagram really stuck out.
Isolation track destroyed me.Crushed my brain and smashed my balls. Pure heaven. I know that I MUST buy this album.
It sounds amazing, incredibly technical and gripping, but It will take me a while to get into it because I find some songs from the last two albums more memorable ( manipulation of tragedy and sworn oath), the overall sound of the album is stronger though.
Those old school max vocals and the overall production were a huge part of their sound
Even if they make a new thrash record, it won't stand out of the others in the genre because of the generic production in the metal music industry right now
Nisindu Perera wrong, sounds nothing like other more modern plastic ”metal” bands, Sepultura still sounds like Sepultura to this day and Quadra is awesome
@@PetePohjanniemi I don't dislike the record at all
I really love the progressive nature in Quadra
They've still got their vibe but the guitar tone is not very good imo
Maybe because I'm still living inside the early sepultura days (cuz I really love the death/thrash thick guitar tone)
I have to give it a few more listens though
@@PetePohjanniemi plastic metal?
Examples?
Sepultura are just one of those bands that feel comfortable with experimenting with their sound and it sure as fuck pays off.
