I've never really got into Sepultura all that much. Can't really tell you why that is. But I saw they released a new album and out of boredom I decided to give this one a go. And dear God, wtf have I been missing? What resonated more for me were the lyrical content and their thrash and groove elements which are my favorite ways I like my metal to be. This album has turned out to be one of my favorites in a long time. It's fuckin dope.

As a drummer I use to think Sepultura’s biggest draw for me was Igor’s drums, but after he left I realized the most important part of Sepultura was Andreas’ guitar riffs. Andreas is always pushing himself further and further to create new things. Even on the albums like Nation and Dante I may not have always liked the songs but I was glad he was playing new things. During the DERRICK era I really liked Against, Roorback for its groove metal vibe, Alex for it’s concept and structure. Now these last few albums have taken their sound to a new place. From Scizophrenia to Roots to Against to now I’ve been really happy with their output.

Sepultura was never just a thrash band. They never did an album twice, always developing themselves into something new (with and without the Cavalera). Guardians of Earth is probably one of my most played tracks since the release, it's just fantastic in every sense.
From the acoustic intro into a fucking heavy part and there when you least expect it you get into a pirate vibe and then into the solo and then back into the full on metal again.

Andreas Kisser is an exceptional guitarist and his work on Quadra is probably his best work so far. Paulo Jr. is an old school bassist who just seem to get better and better. Derrick Green is in his top vocal form here and has proved persistence is key to success. Sepultura have been a prog band since Dante (not on Kairos though), I would say. I guess that’s one of the reasons Igor left. All these strings parts started there as well. I think this is kinda their 5th phase:
    Black/Thrash: before Kisser joined
    Thrash: from Schizophrenia to Arise
Groove Metal: from Chaos AD to Against
    Hardcore: from Against to Roorback

I wouldn't call it "prog", but they really started getting more technical since "Dante" and "A-Lex" was the definitive proof of it.
"A-Lex" also had a kind of progressive structure (despite not being a Prog Metal record) and 4 parts ("acts"), showing all styles the band played up until that point. Since that record they have been improving on these ideas, and in many ways "Quadra" feels like the point where they essentially perfected them.

Just for curiosity, Quadra can mean a lot of things in portuguese.
Quadra can be a sports place, synonymous of 'Court' in english. We also use Quadra for some square-shaped places we hold events - all of the Samba spots we can it Quadras. Quadra can also mean 'City Block/Quarter' in portuguese.
But, most important, we use Quadra to reference anything that can come in 4 parts or in a series of fours. This could be easily the metaphor here.

I was never a big Metallica or Slayer fan growing up. Popular amongst the other metal kids at school, but, for me, Sepultura were by far and away superior to any other '80s Thrash I could get my hands on.

For me, it was the opposite. In Brazil, people have loved Sepultura since mid 80s. I never saw anything special on their music. I always saw them much below the second wave of thrash bands like, for instance, Death Angel or even Forbidden. Also, their lyric content has always been like an empty vessel, though that is a problem with most of the rock/metal bands. Now, they have a great vocalist and drummer, but that is not enough to make me get into the band.

I think this is the best metal album I heard since This Godless Endeavor by Nevermore (best album of the 2000’s IMO). This album definitely surprised me after several lackluster releases from them in the last few cycles. I loved their old albums... and I honestly enjoyed Green's first albums with the band as well. Nation and Roorback are actually 2 of my favorite albums from Sepultura in general, so the fact that this album goes back to that "melodic thrash" style... along with some fresh nuances (orchestras, choirs, and progressive moments), has really helped them to put out a monstrous release. I wouldn't be against calling it one of the best modern metal albums in quite some time.

Sepultura is a taste I acquired during the pandemic lockdown.
The conceptual meaning behind Quadra (Latin): quatro (Portuguese, Spanish) = 4 (four).
Guitarist Andreas Kisser explained that the concept of the album is based on Quadrivium, which are the four subjects or arts (namely arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy) taught after teaching the trivium. (wikipedia)
Based on this, the band divided the 12-track album into four sections of three songs each. The first being thrash metal songs, based on the classic Sepultura sound. The second section is inspired by the groove-percussion oriented sound the band explored in Roots. The third part has more progressive songs (…), but it’s not all instrumental tracks. Side four features slow-paced and melodic tracks. (wikipedia)
Quadra is a concept album so titled because its 12 songs are divided into four groups of three songs each. Each grouping showcases a different aspect of the band's musical persona. (allmusic)
