  • Thanks so much for joining me for "Quick and Classy! How to Make a Giant Yarn Blanket from Start to Finish!" I'm so glad you're here!
I made a giant yarn blanket last year in a basic rib stitch and loved it so much. But I've been just itching to make one of those super classic, stockinette stitch ones you see all over Pinterest and Instagram. And guys. This project could NOT have been more fun! It was SO FAST and and SO EASY! This blanket knit up in about two hours and was so fun. And I seriously could not be more in love with the results. It's my dream blanket! So even if you're a total beginner, don't let that stop you from making one of these gorgeous blankets! It's so easy!
I hope you're able to make your own giant yarn blanket. And if you do, I'd love it if you found me on Instagram and tagged me in your giant yarn blanket photos!
    Happy knitting!

Yes, it is beautiful, but as a knitter (60 years) and a spinner, I do not recommend making this. Not only is roving incredibly expensive, roving was not meant to be knitted as it has no structure and will fall apart in due time. Also, roving will not stand up to washing or pets. If one does wish to make such a blanket, consider a very chunky yarn in form of acrylic or superwash wool instead.

Like many of the comments I see listed, the wool is soooo dang expensive. I went on a hunt to find something more comparable that doesn't break the budget, and there is yarn I found at Michael's that works well. It's by Loops & Threads, their Free Spirit yarn. When on sale at Michael's, I got it for $25 per skein. I just made this blanket yesterday with that yarn and followed this tutorial. I used 4 total skeins, and I did 20 stitches instead of 18. I just had to felt each skein together which wasn't difficult. It turned out so beautiful! I want another reason to make more since it was actually pretty fun

I am enjoying all your videos, Anja! I used the Michael’s Loops and threads, 4 skeins for $67 on sale. The project turned out well but it will be used for “show” only on a queen bed because the yarn sheds like crazy. It measures approximately 40” by 76”, longtail cast on of 21 stitches. I would like to make a wool roving blanket and did this less expensive one for practice. I read most of the comments and would say that before doing something like this, make sure you watch many videos and do research on felting roving wool. All of Anja’s videos were helpful and she has a couple on felting. I saw that someone spent $300 and didn’t like the result. Please don’t give up; I would take it apart and felt your yarn to make it much stronger and will shed less. I have learned as a knitter that tinking (unknitting) is part of the process of getting a good end result in knitting. Michael’s Loops and Threads will not need to be felted because it is polyester, acrylic and wool. Laurie

For people complaining about cost of Merino wool, one of the softest natural fibers out there, versus an acrylic blend you can find at Michael’s...the point of these giant merino blankets is that they are luxurious. Luxury isn’t cheap. More power to you if you can find an acrylic blend at Michael’s that serves your purpose, also.

Thank you for this awesome instruction, and for keeping it short. I'm sure your blanket is of superior quality, and some day i'l make one for myself.
However, for the more frugal bunch like me, just tonight I went to Michael's and bought two skeins of yarn at $34.99 each, and got the third one for free - that's not expensive at all. Since each skein is 54 yards of a BEAUTIFUL, super SOFT like Merino wool rose color, that would make me a decent size throw, at a total of 162 yards. There are so many GORGEOUS muted and natural colors to choose from as well. Since the blanket that I want to make requires 142 yards, I'll have plenty of yarn to possibly make it tad bigger!!! Today is January 3rd, so even if I make one blanket per month, I'll have plenty of beautiful handmade throws to give as a Christmas gift in December to about 12 people. Have fun!!! 😊👍👍

Walmart has the big super soft chunky yarn in big skeins on clearance for 7 dollars a skein. 78 yard skein!! Its not wool though. Check your local Walmart clearance aisle. Not where the yarn is. The clearance aisle is in a different place. It has a mix of clearanced items. I got 5 huge skeins at 7 dollars each. I only need 5 of these skeins due to how large they are. These skeins are normally $15.00 to $25.00 dollars a skein. I'm going back to get 15 more skeins so I can make these blankets for my boys for Christmas. I wish I could post a picture of the yarn. So pretty and soft. They had lavender, creme, navy and gray colors.

First, may I say how much I love your enthusiasm! I hope by now you are able to disregard the negative comments about the cost of the yarn. You stated upfront that it was luxury wool yarn so obviously it is going to cost some money. So please disregard those comments. The color of the blanket you chose was so beautiful! I have a question. What did the final measurements of the blanket end up being? I want to make a baby blanket but don't know what the gauge is for this thickness of yarn. Thank you so much. Regardless of other comments, you did a great job making this video. Not too fast and very clear. Blessings.

I love this so much. I purchased 8 pounds or merino wool to try to do this but not only can I not fit 18 stitches on my arm so they are even but my tail is not getting shorter! Even though I’ve slowed your speed down and have taken it apart several times I can’t seem to get it right. I’m thinking about getting a thick rod of some sort to use as an arm. I think I’m twisting loops wrong to. I’m not giving up though because I am making this as a gift for my daughter for Xmas.

Hi Anja, We do have a small bed (150x200 cm) and I plan to knit a blanket to cover it nicely. Probably, I would need more length to cover also the pillows. Could you please advise on the followings:
    1, Should I buy 2 yarns?
2, How many cm I should leave for the tail?
3, Instead of 18 stitches how many stitches should I do for the first row?
Many thanks for your video! It is a great motivation 🌷😘

I went to Michael's in Salem NH yesterday and they have a similar yarn on clearance. $4 for 2 skeins. You have to buy 2 to get the price. Definitely not a large skein like here but sure much cheaper in the end. It's either loop & thread or made by Indy.
Not sure if all Michael's run the same deal.
    Good luck ladies 😍
