For most people (personal PC) I think "if it isn't broken, don't fix it" I don't know how many times in the past I wanted to "update" or "upgrade" by drivers and it broke something and caused a headache and my time to undo and "re-fix" it. If your PC is fine, just leave it.

No, NO, I REFUSE! I need to update BIOS and every driver for no reason and blame everyone except me when it creates a problem.

The Windows update two days ago completely borked my system. It updated and restarted when I wasn't even in the room and now the desktop and taskbar components in Windows are just missing. I have to use a keyboard shortcut to open file explorer and find the exe to open apps right now. I've truly tried everything to fix the corruption but I'm probably going to have to do a fresh install.

I really like snappy driver origin (as a newbie). I remember last year I built my own PC and I didn't even know what pcie drivers were and a whole bunch of other drivers such as realtek for audio. I ran the program and had like 8-16 drivers (can't remember the exact number) not installed or completely outdated. After downloading and installing them I realised how important certain ones are such as pcie drivers for system security. All in all one of the best programs I ever downloaded.

    Great topic Chris!
I recently did a clean install of Win 11 Pro on my new AM5 system. By default both iGPU and dedicated GPU were enabled in the bios, and Windows Update was installing a different driver version for each, which would break display drivers entirely. I figured out driver store explorer myself just last week, then saw this video!
There is also a logitech lighting driver that gets pulled in through Windows update that enables the new dynamic lighting for keyboard and mice, but that update makes ALL of my USB ports not work when booting into safe mode! Both these issues were fixed by DSE.

If folks knew that in device manager, they can go to a mystery device, right click, go to the Details tab, and in the drop-down the second item, "Device instance path" will contain the hexidecimal PID/VID, VEN/DEV, or maybe other identifiers which can be typed into Google to identify any hardware (non-virtual) device with missing drivers, a lot less people would get sucked into those sketchy driver pack PUPs. I dread the eventual and inevitable removal of this functionality when they force it all to be done in the Metro UI :)

Snappy Driver Installer comes really handy, especially on laptops which don't have updated drivers on the official website (because of the manufacturers releasing new models every year, so driver support ends relatively quick), but on other websites there compatible updated drivers for a specifik hardware component in that laptop. So snappy driver checks all these official drivers on all the websites from Intel, Amd, Realtek, etc.

I ended up using Snappy Driver installer because I couldn't get the official drivers to install on a new mini PC running Win10 instead of 11. Awesome tool. Under WIn10 there were so many drivers that wouldn't install (thunderbolt, CPU, USBs, graphics). This tool (while it took a bit of time to download the drivers) got it up and running and working how it should have in the first place.
Although the first tool you mentioned also seems like a good addition. Great that you can export your current drivers if you need to reinstall Windows.
BTW Installing Linux on the same hardware was a breeze compared to Windows.

I know its freeware with a paywall for pro package so its a big no for most
but i've been using driver easy for a long time as i wasnt sure where to look for anything good
the bright side drivereasy looks for drivers from official manufacturer sites and gets those
the only thing you really miss out on is "backups/autoinstall" which i really dont care much about windows comes with build in rollback feature for drivers and installing manually is as easy as just right clicking an inf file and pressing install
thirdly it also offers an uncapped download speed
the free version caps speed to 50kb/s
thats awfully slow i know but 90% of drivers are very small anyways, so it doesnt even matter that much
the only igger ones are realtek audio and nvidia but those i got directly from their respective website , aswell as nvidia having geforce managing graphics driver for you...
again i know its freeware with paywall i never cared about
but it has been working fine for me so far, let me know your gripes with that.

    Hey Chris, greetings from Russia!
Back in times when windows 7 and little further windows 8 just released most of admin guys and technical support specialists used driverpack solution. Big archive of drivers for windows since version 2000 on one big sized usb flash-drive 8 gb as usual, cause 16 gb and above in thosedays being so expensive.
But in some cases DPS was really helpful cause some devices was been hard enough to determine manufacturer of it. And so many times i working with laptops and stucked in situation when only DPS helped to find drivers but there were different problem. After installing drivers via DPS standalone installer system failed to bloatware hell. Big windows and screens with ADs opens randomly at any time. Some shitty apps installing themselves In a background proccesess even when user disconnecting to internet.
I don't know how DPS going in nowadays but for some period it was best driver managing software and then it falls to bloatware-provider.

But the only way I could get it to work with my cable modem was to run it in a cess point mode which disabled most of its features.
The reason I am using the archer ax12 is the WiFi in the modem that my cable modem has isn't good.
Even though the signal strength isn't any better in some of my devices they still don't have any problems accessing the internet. With the cable modem the far off devices would have a lot of problems accessing the internet.

Turns out that Microsoft states that driver updates via Windows Update are optional and never ever mentions that GPU drivers are an exception to this. I had driver issues for a whole year before I found out Windows update would push its drivers in place of existing ones even if the currently installed ones are newer and pulled directly from the manufacturer's site. It would always result in a mess of differently sourced drivers of different versions that caused games to crash and this wouldn't stop until I disabled driver updates via Windows update completely.
I just don't update them unless a vulnerability gets discovered or something needs it for some reason.

Hey there! So, I've got this trusty old almost e-waste HP Pavilion G6, rockin' the AMD A4 chip and Windows 7 . But man, finding and updating drivers is pain in the a$$. specially graphic drivers ,HP's like, 'Sorry, we've moved on,' and AMD's all about that legacy life now. 😅 Tried my luck with SDI and Driverpack, but ended up in BSOD again and again . Any suggestions?

GPU drivers are a HUGE pain. My windows VM just randomly goes dark, seems like the AMD GPU drivers get uninstalled mid game for some reason. Cannot boot back to the VM unless whole machine is rebooted, then it's a whole hassle of DDUing the old driver, installing new driver/reinstalling current driver, reboot loops, and finally, maybe everything works again.
At work we struggle with card reader drivers all the time. New update that's pushed through AD foooks everything up 90% of the time.

    Relevant to me!

I HAD to lay a Windows 7 Image on it.
    Unsurprisingly, I lacked several drivers.

You bought a PC with Windows 10 OS, there's no Windows 10 PC-only in the market. It's not a Mac.
Just run Windows Updates and it should grab all the necessary drivers.

SDIO is the best compared to windows update for drivers, its an index from official drivers from manufactory's no need to mention those 2 othet shady tools. as for the tool to export drivers? thats a good one but SDIO also does that to compile a backup

I have a few questions for @Chris Titus Tech
    1. Isn’t this all kind of moot and useless now at this point with the driver installer and updater feature added to Windows Update in Windows 10 and 11?
You no longer need any third party tools or the manufacturers drivers from their websites anymore because Windows just grabs all of my drivers for me on a fresh install after using Windows Update.
And for network and other devices, everything is just plug and play these days and so my internet was already available right from the Windows Install setup menu where it asks for a Microsoft Account and etc.
    2. I also noticed that you didn’t mention Intel Driver And Support Assistant. Wouldn’t that automatically be superior to any third party driver installer and updater since it’s an official app created directly by Intel themselves?
    3. Also, just curious, but what do you think about Driver Booster from IOBit.
    4. And my last question is, what do you think about just using the Driver Installer Discs that usually come with prebuilt PC’s for your motherboard and video card and etc? How To Geek recommends just using the included installation media. Do you agree with them in that?

I mean. Anything recent enough and Windows will manage those drivers good enough by itself. And if it can't it's probably a sign you should get new hardware anyway.

IObit Driver Booster? I've used it in the past, no problems, and it was free of charge.
But... Windows Updates downloads the drivers as it is (so the only point to these programs is if WU can't get them).
IObit Uninstaller Pro 11 cracked (removes ads) is great, way better than the default uninstaller.

Simple tell you if you have old driver if you are up to date and nothing more
This app saved me when i did an fresh windows install to a propietary mobo (Dell Laptop) the default windows audio drivers werent compatible with the mother and the classic Realtek one didn't work too....
But i find this app and download the exact drivers that i need .... That are a few files with no executable..you have to install them manually with the driver installer in Divice Manager but it worked

I'd build PC's all day long for people if all I had to do was the hardware. By far the most difficult part to me at least is doing the windows install and making it right. Not that its difficult, its just not what I would rather be doing. Its difficult when theres issues like vague bsod errors or weird wifi nic issues. I've always gotten drivers from the mobo site. Dedicated GPU driver from the manufacturer. If theres an issue and I suspect it to be driver related. I try whatever windows update says is a newer driver.
