- joy williams and john paul white work their magic on one of the defining songs from one of the best albums of the 90s - 'disarm' from the smashing pumpkins second album 'siamese dream'.
siamese dream was the album that put the smashing pumpkins on the map nationally, and detailed the internal struggles of front man billy corgan, including his battles with severe, suicidal depression.
once again, the civil wars bring their unique acoustic talent to bear on an iconic song, a song for which they share the same affinity.

Joy's vocal control is absolutely friggin astounding. Her mic technique is flawless.
Such passion and energy put into every performance. They never left anything on the stage when they performed. Miss these guys.
If you don't like their version, go away and listen to Smashing Pumpkins, don't trash their brilliant interpretation of the song. Because either way they have to be super creative to change the style of the song so much, and perfectly make it their own.
Utterly, gorgeously, haunting cover, and this is coming from a long-time, die hard Pumpkins fan.
Wow.
Every few months or so, I end up back here and lament what might have been.
Breaks my heart knowing that they broke up. Such beautiful music they made.
So sad. I suspect relationship drama. No one can sing like that together and not have chemistry (and shes's married).
Man, I miss these guys and their beautiful voices. This cover is a highlight of this album. Gets me every time.
1:17 "I must get attention, nobody has given me any attention for several minutes, they just look at this band all the time"
pridden76 I love the audience reaction. I feel it.
I really enjoyed the subtle crescendos and decrescendos around 1:49. They really show mastery of the voice as an instrument.
fyi it's called a diminuendo not a decrescendo
My mistake.
***** You didn't make a mistake, decrescendo is just an alternative term for a diminuendo... just as an augmented 4th or a diminished 5th is synonymous with a tritone. They're the same thing.
I can listen to this song forever. Love it sooooooo much!
3:20 right there in the feels....
That crowd is annoying as hell. Why can't you just shut up and listen to these amazing musicians do their thing?
7th time in a row just listening to this..... I can't stop. And I absolutely love the Smashing Pumpkins. I usually hate covers, but this one is by far the best I have ever heard.
What a loss, what a loss !!!
Hard not to fall in love with Joy singing like that.... 💘
It touches me in all the right places 😇😇😇
We all carry stories inside of us, waiting to be read.
So beautiful
whoa what a great rendition
No matter how good a song is every once in awhile you get tired of it. So its great to have this covers that takes the song to places you don't imagine...keeps the song fresh and alive. Keep that in mind..
Chills.. I got chills. Extraordinary.
Gorgeous song, so fun to play and sing. The Civil Wars are truly one of the greatest duo I have ever seen.
I love it!!! The Civil Wars are amazing ♥
I don't think they're underrated. They're my favorite band!
My favorite performance!!
Beautiful.
this gave me goosebumps!
Same! Ugh they are just unbelievably flawless...
They now have new solo
albums out and life is going very well for the disbanded Civil Wars ! I am so happy they found new and awesome creativity on their own !
Frequency (Netflix) I thank you so very much.
Quite,quite stunning.
i almost cry every time i hear something new by them
I never liked the original version, but their version gives me chills.
Breath taking
Love it!!
They are awesome.Nuff said!
That was amazing
gah. goosebumps.
Beautiful take on an amazing song. Awesome job
Stunning.......
Amazing.
Great cover in the way that you made it your own, which always should be the case when a band does a cover. Really well done.
You have to forgive me though that having experienced the original in my early 20's when it was first released, the original still holds greater weight with me.
Wonderful...
I'm speechless! For 2 reasons; the undeniable magic that occurs when hearing these 2 sing together, but even more b/c they're no longer singing together? So very unfortunate!
This song always makes me feel like I should be crying
I love it so.....Fantastic Artist's and Fabulous Song....Peace, Love & Kindness for all....Wado, Redbird ~~ : ^ )
Great guitar tone also.
I love this song so much it hurts u_u
3:20 gives me the chills everytime
Ahhhhuuuuuuuu!!!
Most underrated band of the 90s.
I've played this song on my guitar the past week because of the Civil Wars and how they just stick on you.
I love their rendition of this song so much I consider it theirs alone. (Sorry) it's so heartbreaking yet strengthening at the same time. They could probably sing it acapela and it would still be fantabulous 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
Her voice destroys me, especially at around 1:28. So gifted. RIP the civil wars.
Parting is such sweet sorrow.....
These guys are great. I reeeaaaally like the girls voice.
Cool band...
There needs to be a tab for this song. I want to learn it!
Very unique approach for a SmashingPumpkinsVEVO #classic #welldone TheCivilWars TheCivilWarsVEVO thecivilwarsmusic
yeah! the smashing pumpkins did a cover of landslide by fleetwood mac and the solo is completely different. and fyi to whoever wrote the comment above you, i like it. its different, and a happy medium between me (the smashing pumpkins freak) and my sister (the Civil Wars freak)
Me too
This is the better version of the two. Sometimes a cover brings a song full circle. Pumpkins version brought a lot of questions. This version answers those questions.
jonah hill @ 2:56
Edward Ramirez amazing
the girl that screamed in the beginning was a little annoying at first but after listening to this version 100000000 times, I realized that I probably would've done the same thing.
Don't compare it to the original. Perfectly written songs can be produced in any style. They allow interpratation and still have the structure to be magnifique. Just enjoy.
Wow, so happy that chick felt it appropriate to yell during a very meaningful song about the struggles with depression...congrats for the rude behaviour, very classy!
You're one clear example of why people is unique. Because my opinion is the total opposite of yours. I feel like the original lacks emotion (and I love them!).
Actually the chords are exactly the same, give or take some embellishments. The main thing that's different is the time signature, which is now 3/4.
Algum Brasileiro?
Most of those kids in that room Probably Never Heard of the Smashing pumpkins, Unless You were born in the 80's and grew up in the 90's
Sounds like they're searching for melody
yeah but in this case it was like she couldn't hold it anymore...like all of us:)
1:18 girl screaming pisses me off
Well this is really different from the actual song
I love this song, the Civil Wars are a good band but the original version is way more deep when Billy sings it...
They perform it beautifully, but a little too slow The strength of the original was the fact that it was somber yet high tempo. JMO
They sound nice, but this is not at all recognizable as "disarm." The only thing they kept is the lyrics. The melody and music are completely different! I was disappointed by this, not because it doesn't sound good, but because saying it is "disarm" is misleading. It's essentially a nice but totally different song that has borrowed lyrics.
You absolutely have no clue what the idea of a cover is based upon do you? If you need help, its called Interpretation.
Not worthy
sp did it better ;)
Sorry, but horrible version of a great song.
fuck you
Agreed what a massacre.I wish these guys would just give up on this song and just stop this garbage.
***** what is music?? never heard of that????
*****
It is not an opinion it is fact. This is an insult to a classic. They should be ashamed of themselves for killing this song.
fuck you *****
What an insult to a great song.
Go awayyyyyy
Nooooooooooo, these idiots that are ruining a great song are the ones that need to go awayyyyyy. Pure garbage.
*****
His name is Billy Corgan fyi and i call bullshit. No way would he "love" this piece of shit. Have a good day liar.
*****
Lol,the band manager said he enjoyed it eh? Well i guess thats just the same as saying he loved it.....NOT. Regardless Billy, myself and 99% of the people who heard this knows its a disgrace to the song and is complete shit. So yeah, whatever!
I know it's becoming a bit of a cliche saying such a thing but MY GOD the GENUINE goosebumps I experienced at 3:19 .
I found myself wandering here again. I just can't resist. The acoustics of the room are INCREDIBLE with better headphones.
I don't think any of the audience was born when this song came out lol
I like the original, love this cover, practically two completely different songs though. I am tres glad it was on their new CD. Because yes, I still buy CDs. Hopefully it won't be their last. :(
absolutely stunning. haunting. beautiful. wow...
Blown away with the version!
Works for me.
They have completely achieved rendering their "own" version of this song... No need to argue which one is best or not.. Two different styles which may appeal to either fans... In my case. I just love both.
amazing, I'm speechless. There's so much feeling in their song
Amazing!
omg her voice
yes
I love the Pumpkins AND Civil Wars, but it's not crazy to not like the Pumpkins.
It doesn't mean they will continue. They might have been contractually obligated to release something from their label. HOPEFULLY, they will continue...
I think it's QUITE great.
You are correct. This is the only Pumpkin cover I ever heard that gave me the same feeling as the original.
is it jOhnny depp's brOther...lOl
I would pay 1000 bucks to see them in concert. I bet a lot of people would. That's how we're going to get em back on stage together!! :) ill do it, I'll pay a thousand bucks! Tell me where to swipe my visa. Lol
I saw them at the Mother Church of Music (Ryman Auditorium), and they played their song from Hunger Games with this sorta famous lady named Taylor something. I assure you, it would be the best $1000 you could ever spend
THE STUDIO VERSION IS SO AMAZING IT MAKES ME WANNA CRY
I think Billy would dig it...
