  • Muckle Roe is one of Shetland's Sea Kayaking gem's with it's distinct red granite rock, in fact the name Muckle Roe translates into 'Big Red Island'
We set off from Muckle Roe Marina near the road bridge to the island just south of Busta.
A dark grey day with heavy rain and moderate wind forecast for the entire day.
Out through Roe sound and along the low South Eastern shore the red granite rock began to show its full colour.
Working our way up the exposed West coast things quickly became more interesting with a multitude of reefs, gullies, sea caves and tunnels driven into the rock by the unhindered powerful Atlantic swell. The are red cliffs are very dramatic and the insides of there caves take on an otherworldly appearance with weird shapes worn into the polished red coloured rock.
Highlights along the way included the famous 'Hole of Hallier' and various subterranean tunnels cut right through the headlands.
Various natural arches, deep caves, cut throughs and gullies were thoroughly explored and enjoyed by all, made all the more dramatic with the torrential driving rain and dark skies throughout the day.
Lunch was enjoyed in North Ham accessed through a small archway from the Southern approach.
Ironically more camera issues prevented further footage of there remaining part of the day but thankfully I had already captured the best parts of the trip being in close, once around the Northern point we travelled South out in the middle of Roe Sound before returning back to our launch point.
A fabulous Sea Kayaking trip and not one to be missed when visiting Shetland.

Thanks for your comments Phil, Shetland is a fantastic group of remote and exposed island islands. They are hammered by weather and tidal extremes making them a fabulous playground for the experienced sea Kayaker to enjoy. Cheers, loads more Scottish sea kayaking adventure locations to come.

Fabulous and fascinating Geoff. What a treat: all those amazing gullies and caves... and tunnels. I was almost drooling (not a pretty sight at the best of times)... and just taking it all in. A brilliant, well covered commentary given in " Geoff style". A one to watch again for sure and one not to lose.
Thank you Geoff. Quite brilliant... AGAIN!! Love, Pam

Thanks Pam your getting quite the fan, and I'm so pleased you're enjoying the trips and video's.
My kayaking trips over the last few years have been really good in all so many ways, yet thinking back to my very early years kayaking they were really memorable too as I could throw the boat around in the surf, no wonder my body is totally wrecked 🤣🤣🤣
I don't suppose you've gone back far enough on my channel so here's one from a good few years ago...

Thanks for your comments Mitch. I hope it is helping with your progress in some small way as we all have to start somewhere. No matter where you are in the world there will always be some new and exciting adventure to enjoy in your kayak. Although some of my video's may show some extreme paddling/conditions these can usually be avoided and there are always calm sections to enjoy equally well.
Enjoy your progressive journey throughout all aspects of our amazing sport.
I wish you well and please return, share with friends and consider subscribing if not already for more entertainment 😊
All the Best for you future. Geoff 👍💪

Hi, not sure what to call you?? But thanks for your kind comments! Yes, Shetland is a tremendous area with magical scenery and features. It's so rugged being constantly battered by incredible wind and swell being such remote islands. Not sure where you're from but it is definitely a place that should be on any serious Sea kayakers bucket list.
Thanks for your interest and there's loads more amazing adventures on the channel and still loads more ready to edit and upload, so be sure to browse and check back periodically 👍👍

Thanks David, it's a stunning place and we made best use of every day, most paddled every day, I had 1 rest day for my knackered shoulders (both rotator cuff and biceps tendon repaired, 1 still unhinged 😃) which was a strong downwind day antway, that was to ensure they'd last the full fortnight 😂
Thanks for your kind comments and keep watching as there's loads more to edit from recent trips, especially keen to edit footage from a 5 day West Coast of Jura, Scarba, Slate Isles, escaping in F7 - F8 then through Corryvreckan just over a week ago.

Spectacular scenery, incredible caves and a really great video - thank you Geoff. I'm on the SE coast of Oz, and we have some fantastic coast, but nothing like those caves that I've seen. (At least our water's a bit warmer).

Hi Rob thanks for your very kind comments. Yes, Shetland is to me, an incredible archipelago of islands and one for every Sea Kayakers dream!! The cliffs and coastline sculpted by the wild Atlantic ocean, where huge swells driven by gales lash the rock into submission and strong tidal streams rip around and through the many caves and tunnels.
Aussie slso has some great places to paddle too! 👍 I,ve had several excellent trips out with the Central Coast guys and Hunter Kayak Klan when visiting my son and family who were living in Tuggera Lakes area but no living in Port Macquarie.
As you say, spoilt with lovely warm water 😂😂.
Keep watching as I've loads more footage to edit from recent trips and an epic just over a week ago, where Iain and I had 5 days out in the tents and had to paddle in F7 - F8 to escape the West Coast of Jura and cross the famous Corryvreckan !!!

      @robk6670 Před rokem

@@geoffburke I'm not far from Wilson's Prom, so the water's not quite as warm as Port Macquarie - around a minimum of 12C in the winter, but nothing like the 6C around the Shetlands that you were paddling in. The thought of 6C gives me shivers, but the scenery obviously compensates well.

@@robk6670 Yeah, right on that southern promontory must me an awesome kayaking spot! A nice setting off point for a trip accross the Bass too. I'd imagine you must get some great tidal paddling around the headlands. Temp is only an issue if you go over and the roll fails. We're not that hardy over here and I've started using a drysuit for winter paddling over the last 2-3 years but strip down to shorts as soon as things warm up...I can't stand all the bulky clothing 😂👍
      Cheers!

Geoff and associates, Thank you AGAIN for a fabulous look at your trip around magical Muckle Roe. It was breath taking, well with the exception of the attempt at singing, but I'm sure he is a fine fellow all the same. Our spring/summer season is just beginning here in "New Scotland" Nova Scotia.
    Keep up the terrific work.

Hi Doug, thanks for your wonderful comments. I can truly say that for me our Shetland trip was a first for me and the best sea kayaking I've ever experienced, even after after 50 years of sea kayaking throughout the UK and abroad !!
Why I haven't I paddled your majestic and mystical Isles before escapes me !!
I will return, but for now I'm focusing on spinal surgery next week (the 50 years paddling has taken its toll) and hoping for success and with the correct rehab I'll be able to paddle again and maybe return for more Shetland Kayaking next year 🤔🤞
I hope you all have a great season this year and I'll certainly be keeping in touch with my new found Shetland friends.
Thanks again Doug and best wishes for the future.

Geoff, As always, thanks for your reply.
By now, I expect you have had your surgery. I certainly hope that all went well and you are on your way to full recovery. I can appreciate that spinal surgery is no walk in the park. I have had my share of medical challenges. Fortunately, at our age, we now tend to follow medical advice.
Geoff, I wish you all the best and await your next wonderful video installment. May the gods be with you, especially Neptune!

@@dugeish Hi Doug, thanks again! Surgery this Wednesday so no news and at least it hasn't been cancelled 🤞yet.
Yeah, I'll be following the rehab protocol to the letter on this one and been fortunate that all the other surgery's and joint replacements have gone well...so time will tell but I'll be working at it 👍 😉 👌
I'll let you know. At least I'll have some time to catch up on more editing to keep you guys amused 😂😂😂
Busy with a recent 5 day West Coast of Jura and Corryvreckan trip edit at present but it won't get finished until after the op when I'm more comfortable. We had to retreat up the West Coast in F7 gusting F8 when the weather changed 😂😂

@@dugeish Thanks Doug, yes all is well and thanks so much for thinking of me 👍👍
A whirlwind visit that went really well thanks. They postponed my arrival from 12.00 midday yesterday to 1.30pm, put me in 3rd theater spot so didn't go down till 4.30pm, back in my room from recovery by 6.30pm. Little or no sleep due to back discomfort from a drain in my back and A4 size pressure wound dressing, DVT inflatable leggins over "Ted" support stockings which inflate around alternate legs with a click and hiss every 30 seconds, so dosing off in between in a sort of twilight unrest. A visit from the physio this morning who removed the pipes and leggins allowing me to get dressed from the theater gown and 'onion bag' knickers, then out of bed to surprising comfort of being upright then a walkabout the corridors to the gym to climb mock up stairs and down again which I passed with flying colours and told I was ready to go home!
Another walk, back to my room, drain removed, cannula removed, home medication supplied, discharge docs completed & supplied, a final xray which I was allowed to view, showing more "new" metalwork installed, a cage wrapped around the spine fusing 2 of the 4 effected vertebrae with bone cement, 4 bloody long screws which are probably long enough to puncture my new drysuit 😂😂😂! All of this completed by tremendous staff in a spotless hospital and finally finished off with a delicious Beef Curry for lunch which would have given any high class restaurant a run for their money.
An amazing journey arriving back home within 24hrs and I already have compressed nerve spasm relief, but with a full rehab estimated at around 12 weeks (surgeon review at 6 weeks) and me following instructions 🙄🤭🤪 I may still have a sport I can return to at an acceptable level for a few more years at least 🤞🤞🤞

Another wonderful Shetland Video, the place looks amazing to go sea kayaking albeit it looks a little challenging at times. Disappointingly it is way out of my comfort zone so a big thank you for all the effort Geoff you have put in to create the videos and thus allow us “force 1” kayakers to view locations we wouldn't otherwise see.
