    Thank you for sharing the information re: the Aboriginals on Rottnest Island as we have watched others do the island but no one has ever presented the Aboriginal history.

    Watched so many caravaners go there. I had no idea of it’s past, thought it was all about the quokers. Thankyou for giving us the past history of the island. I wonder how many other people have learned about the islands sad past. Great episode guys.

    I love your show and your family. I have 11 grandchildren and when I watch your show I think of them. I was heart broken and had tears in my eyes watching your show about Rottnest Island. I am not Indigenous but of Germanic and Irish convict descent. Please keep up your great shows and I can only imagine how you felt on Rottnest Island. I just wonder if we have learnt anything. That little fella of yours melts my 75 year old heart. All the best. Peter SKI Wilson.

    I was aware of the awful awful history of Rottnest, and thankyou so much for sharing it to those who may not have known. Its so so sad to think that in such a beautiful place such terrible things happened, and that those that remain there are so far from their home. 😢

    Thank you guys for that sensitive, informative and moving explanation and narrative about the dark history of Rottnest Island. I imagine that must also have been moving and confronting for the whole family. Your honesty and openness are truly refreshing.
    All of your videos and stories are truly riveting! Thanks for all of them!! 🙏
    Also I hope Henry’s health scare has been worked out while you are in Perth.

    Growing and living in Perth, there was very little acknowlegement of the dark settlement history.
    So important to recognise past behaviour so we stop repeating our ways.
    Many years ago we all camped on those grounds in ignorance, but the authorities out of respect removed all the building and returned it to nature.
    Hope you will return and stay for few days, it is a very peacefull location.

    • @LivingOffTheVan
      @LivingOffTheVan  Před rokem

      Unfortunately the lack of truth of the real history is everywhere!
      I believe some of the ways have definitely been changed, although truth telling and sharing the dark history I think makes people grateful and builds strength we need more of it!
      Yes I read that it was opened like that after the prison closed.
      Would have been an eerie camp!
      Thank you for sharing! Very much appreciated!

    Just out of curiosity. How do you fund your trip independently? Well no known date. I know you sold your house but did spent most on buying car and van.

    • @LivingOffTheVan
      @LivingOffTheVan  Před rokem +3

      Thank you so much for this question.
      We did buy our caravan and car before selling our house. Just didn't get delivery until after due to our caravan needing to be in a caravan show.
      We both owned our previous cars and sold them both for the one car.
      We also sold a lot of unnecessary things and our weekend toys that we didn't want to put in storage as they'd just get older, we all had motorbikes, we had a boat etc.
      whilst we also saved and had a goal before leaving, we too obviously sold our house.
      We do get a little bit of money every month from CZcams.
      We do have an amount of money we won't go lower than in our account so if we have to we will do little stints of work to top it back up.
      As the account goes down and not much is coming back, we just remind ourselves we're investing in each other and our family and the returns have been amazing! Our family has never had a stronger bond and the kids are absolutely smashing life!

    The island did actually start out as a form of low security. Then a prison head administrator came along who turned it into a hell island and was nothing more than a murderer. Australia's Shame.

    It not well covered up…. Most WA people know the history of Rottnest and the way peoples were treated, it may have been a lot of Aboriginal people…. But it was the way people were treated back then… didn’t matter what your race was…. England, Americas etc…. Brutal times for lots of people.

    • @LivingOffTheVan
      @LivingOffTheVan  Před rokem

      Yeah well it shouldn't be covered up at all.
      I do disagree, in Australia settlement affected Aboriginals. In other parts of the world, yes I'd agree. I know this because being Aboriginal why would people have to try and hide their race? I have sat down with Elders from the stolen Generation and heard their stories. I also have been told first hand from some that they would pretend to be from other ethnic backgrounds just to be able to get an education or go into a shop.
      Were non Aboriginal people classed as flora and fauna in the constitution?
