  • The Dell MD1000 - MD3000 Disk Shelf is an older SAS capable 15 drive unit that can be found for pretty decent prices locally often. In SAS more, they function as a JBOD units have dual PSU and dual controller cards and use a SAS 8470 connector type. Using a 8088 to 8470 connector you can mate this up to a generic SAS2 external HBA for passthru. The MD1000 and MD3000 are the same chassis, and function the same with the SAS controller installed. AVOID iSCSI!

      Yeah these are also often easy to find on local marketplaces which is nice if they pop up. Not quite as good on density as horizontal tray options but pretty close.

    will this operate less than full? also whats the max capacity drive it can take and last question, can it run Raid 1?

    Can you do a video on accessing the MD1200 using the serial port to issue commands to dial down the fan speeds for homelab use? This is the closest video of yours I found to the topic. Also, info on updating the firmware, if that's even necessary. Its hard to find info on these PowerVaults or the DB9 Password Reset Cable needed to access the controller's firmware. I just picked up a pair of MD1200 with dual controllers and PSU. I was going to use them for bulk storage in home lab via Unraid and an LSI 9200-8e. I understand that you can easily flash the firmware if you have the 1200 connected to the H810 using a windows app, but if not, then it has to be done manually using serial connection and putty file transfer. I'm afraid to brick the unit, so I'm thinking I'll just live with the loud fans in the home lab.

    Hmm... I believe Sata 1 would still be a viable option for Chia Harvesters. Great Video. You keep coming up with solutions to problems we all have. Keep up the good work!!!

    This might be a really stupid question but how would you go about farming with these? Lets say I have a bunch of already plotted drives, I would then connect this to a normal PC using that SATA cable? And would the drives be read individually or as one large drive?

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Před 2 lety

      Its a SAS cable and the drives would present as individual drives to the host operating system.

      i am also looking at a MD3200. did you ever figure this out? I'm trying to see if it will support standard SATA drives and what the max drive size is, 8TB, 12TB 14TB? I have a sas cable and sas controllers.

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Před 2 lety +1

      These work with sata or sas drives. If you mix and match them you need interposers but other then that normal operation.

    What kind of throughput are you able to get out of a md1000? I have only been able to get a little over 3gbit shared across all drives.

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Před 8 měsíci

      Yes 3gbit will be your max throughput on those controllers as its a SAS-1 generation device.

    why is your rack so ridiculously loud? is there any fan tuning that can be done? my homelab is in my family room and my wife would throw me out if I brought something this loud into the house... is there a quiet solution? I'm currently investigating disk shelves to expand my current nas setup which is currently in a desktop case (fractal design meshify 2xl) and it makes a very livable slight hum. that's what i'm after in a disk shelf... any suggestions?

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Oh yeah that's the sound of the R420 right above that MD1000 running a workload at 100%. I'm so glad I don't have that noise machine anymore, 1U fans are not fun. I would recommend a NetApp DS4246 or DS4243 and while those are among the most quiet pure disk shelves, they are not hanging in same room with it level of noise imo. I did a few videos on those also so you could check their noise levels more accurately. The only 24 ish solution that would be nearly dead silent would be a modded SC 846/847 with the internals replaced and that includes the fan wall. Totally doable but it does take a decent amount of time and effort as well as money. A cheap but good other option would be an R720XD that has 12 3.5" bays and you can tune the fans to a low level manually with IPMI. If you just put a single low TDP Xeon in it and a few dimms and a few cards, it can be very quiet.

    what is the actual rack called that is hold the jbods? I'm planning on building a chia farm and would like to know which rack system is best to carry the weight of multiple jbods.

    • @DigitalSpaceport

      Mine are not the best. Look locally for APC netshelters racks. Those are the best.

    Hold up… 6:30 you said you wouldn’t want to use this 12 drive array for anything high performance write like ZFS. Why not exactly?

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport  Před 3 měsíci

      It's a 12 disk array on sas-1 tech. It's hard to get maxed out results in RaidzX given those two constraints.

    • @SteveHartmanVideos
      @SteveHartmanVideos Před 3 měsíci

      Oh I didn’t realize it was SAS 1. Thanks for the reply. The bottleneck for 12 drives would be the connection to the host I would bet.
