    Just arrived from your Hibiscus live painting where you referenced string gel..what fun! Thank you for your "full service" art share!

      String gel will bubble and is best used on pieces smaller than 16xx20 but I have used it on big pieces,24x30 and it took 2 full large jars at $10 a pop.

    You can use any of the liquitex gels and it will do the same thing. I'm not sure which is less expensive but it's interesting. I need to find something that domes like dimensional magic but that dries clear and doesn't yellow.

    Ginger, great video as always! I love the way it turned out. I saw someone take their water bottle and mist over bubbles and it broke them up...you can try that that.

    nice very nice effect, i do have a probably dumb question tho, why not using a brush to spread it? I mean that seems economic to?

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety

      +Medina Elsayed Maybe a sponge brush. Imagine brushing on Honey. the knife does not pick up the gel, but even a sponge might I leave it on fairly thick. If I want a thinner coat of something I use pouring medium.

  • @CnithTheOnliestOne

    Tar gel is similar but yeah, I prefer this. Mine got think tho... Can I use water to thin it down?

    I love it! The picture and the technique is amazing, Ginger. Never occurred to me that the snap gun is so easy to use. I've been wanting to find those frames too. Do you know any other place that carries them?

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety

      +Belinda Roca I bought it on Amazon. I have a video on CZcams on how to use it If you buy one be sure to order extra nails as it came with very few.

      +Ginger Cook String gel is normally used in abstract art and poured or dripped on with color added.

  • @sueclark8896

    I love string gel! It can be addicting. Question for you? what is the difference between using the string gel opposed to a soft or gloss medium - as far as the finished result? Guess I could make one...lol. I used the gloss medium on my abstract guitar & love the look. I most recently decided to do it to the flower box painting...love it too. Thanks for the video on how to apply. ;-)

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety +1

      +Sue Clark You just have to see it. hard to explain. Pouring medium works too but thinner.

  • @amandahuffstetler9695
    @amandahuffstetler9695 Před 6 lety

    Ginger, I typically grab Golden everything and looks like Golden's stringy medium version is called Tar Gel. Have you tried the Tar Gel to see if it would do this similar top coat?

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 6 lety +1

      not the same but Golden is my go to favorite for heavy gloss gel mediums and texture medium. I use Liquitex for stucco and string gel but there is a pouring medium that works too and of course you can buy that two part epoxy art stuff that does not smell...

    Wow...I have never heard of it, well I might have but just dismissed it amongst all the available mysteries in the jars! Love what it does, it really looks like it's under glass. I wonder, can it be used over watercolor paintings ? Thanks for all the information you share, I really am learning so much.

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety

      +Anita Holmes I would spray them with spray acrylic varnish first. then yes you can.

    • @anitaholmes6824
      @anitaholmes6824 Před 8 lety

      Do you mean like Kryolic for example?

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety

      +Anita Holmes do not have a brand name off the top of my head, but there are specific spay varnishes for acrylics that work on water color paper, the other thin is just do a test. You do not want your paper to curl so it would have to be glued to foam core or a board.

    I love it but, wouldn’t epoxy resin be easier & cheaper?

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před rokem

      You can buy a two part epoxy stuff that works well too. You have to be careful to brace the canvas with a board behind stretcher bars as the weight will cause the painting to sag in the middle. Not sure if it is more or less expensive.

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety

    Can I use acrylic gel medium as a top coat too???

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 4 lety

      I have seen that done on paper prints with brush marks showing to make it look like a painting. I think that Liquitex glsss medium and varnish is better.

  • @karri4135
    @karri4135 Před 8 lety

    Hi Ginger! I'm not sure, but looks like these little paintings are on canvas paper? If so, is it the string gel that gives an overall hardness to the painting so that it can be framed directly? Otherwise seems that it would still be floppy? It just so happens I am trying to frame a canvas paper piece but I didn't want to put glass over it. Thanks for your tips!

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety +2

      +Karri Robison You have to double stick it with tape to a piece of harder cardboard or foam core the same size. then you can pour it. these small pictures on on real small sheets of canvas made by Paramount tablets (6x8 and 10 to a tablet).. $5 at Jerrys. If you use a stretched canvas put a piece of cardboard behind the canvas under the stretcher bars to prevent sagging.

    • @karri4135
      @karri4135 Před 8 lety

      +Ginger Cook Wonderful! I can do that! Thanks so much for your quick reply, Ginger! Now I can send my palette knife "doodle" (that turned out cute) to my dad :)

    Hi. Could you use this over soft pastels or oil pastels or watercolour instead of framing them with glass?

    • @gingercooklive
      @gingercooklive  Před 8 lety

      +Coralie Edwards The paper will buckle if not glued down to something. You should try it on a scrap paper to see how it works. I think it would depend on the type and weight of the paper.
