Hi guys, brilliant podcast as always! Just wanted to say 80% of us listen to the full podcast which includes one of my favourite parts at the end - your music selection! If 20% of the audience leaves during that segment, the rest of us should not be deprived of your music selection, I honestly learn so much and appreciate the diversity that comes from your music selection. Please keep it in, sod the 20% those people are uncultured. Big fan of the podcast keep bringing the amazing content !

Gents. I'm addicted to Collecting Addicts. It's my Friday evening relax after work. Thank you. I'm a Brit who lives in Singapore and can't help but respond to Edward's mention of the Little Red Dot. The COEs are auctioned twice a month and for cars over 1600cc they are now $150,000. Additional Registration Fee (ARF, not AFR) is a nightmare for new car buyers and importers of high end classic cars, as Edward said. The saving grace of classic cars (over 35 years old) is that the COE is only 10% of the new car COE and the road tax on a classic car is only $280 per year. For comparison the road tax on my 2010 Jag XK is $7,700 per year. The drawback of classic cars is that they can only be used 45 days per year. You pay your money and you take your choice.

Dear Chris... I've been thinking about this over and over..... what we have here..... is pretty much the TopGear we want. Do a Jeremy and take the whole bloody thing mate.
The best bit of educational motoring....... EVER.... and I stand by this, was the AutoCar Free dvd... Focus Rs Left foot Braking!!! I sent that dvd all over the country to people.... You did that Mate! Before CZcams was even a twinkle in someone's eye.
We want you in every car, ever made.
We want you to do a lap time in our cars.
We want you to get the New Captain slow upto speed ; )
We want Manish to give us the exquisite and Stylish.
Chris Cooper to get everything done properly.
Ed to give us the Max Power lad side of things.
...and Neil for the.... "well, its all bollocks, isn't it" Grounding point of view.
    Love you lots, Jon.

Hello boys, US listener here. My brother turned me on to your wonderful podcast, and I tell all my friends in auto racing (we all work in the industry) about the show. Idea for a Two Car Garage: the 56th Baja 1000 off-road race is fast approaching (November 16), and for the first time ever, it will be run south-to-north up the Baja California Peninsula. You and your most fervent off-road friend will be taking in this historic event as spectators, following the race as it crisscrosses the highway for 1,000 miles (1,277 on the actual race course). You will need one GT car to get you down to the start line in La Paz from the US border in San Diego via the narrow, bumpy, perilous highway, and a fast yet capable off-roader to follow the race back northbound, one which will also allow you to occasionally zip in off the highway via a rough, dirt access road to see some of the more spectacular viewing points. Your budget is $150,000. Hope to hear what you all would choose. Thanks for the excellent show, and please don't cut the music section at the end- I love adding new music to my collection, and you have all made many wonderful suggestions. Thank you!

I’ll be off the grid for the premiere. Assuming you’re still taking two car garage prompts, here’s one:
You are Lance Stroll. After being demolished by a 40-something year old and your third DNF in a row, you decide you’ve had enough and hand in the notice to your dad. Before you settle down and start a family, however, you want a last hurrah. You have your driver salary from last season to buy two cars that will hopefully rekindle your love for driving, and help you realize that it’s not just about chasing lap times and pushing buttons on a wheel.

Weirdest thing I have seen on the road. Driving home from work one evening between Bridgnorth and Shrewsbury on the A458, there was a gentleman who resembled the accepted depiction of Jesus walking along with a very large wooden cross over his shoulder and a caster wheel on the bottom of the cross to allow him to drag it along. This was about 20 years ago and I’m still bewildered to this day.

I was in Qatar once for a stop over flight. When they opened the door of the air conditioned bus it was like opening the oven door to check if your pizza was crispy at the top yet. The heat that blasted my face was unreal, I started sweating instantly I could not believe the intensity of it. I couldn't imagine being stuck in an already roasting hot tub with a full suit on trying to wrestle a car round a track. Fuck that for a game of soldiers.

I saw a man get hit by a 60 mph car on the Oxford ring road in 2001. He went head over heels and landed in a heap, both he and his Labrador survived. It seemed so surreal, I didn’t react to it and went on my way. I also saw an old lady in a nightgown walking up the hard shoulder of a motorway in the fog, at night, that was an odd experience. In true Chris Cooper style, I’ll add one more. I was driving into Burford and the sunroof suddenly went black. I looked up and there was a B2 Stealth Bomber above the car, very low. It had just finished a pass at the RIAT. That was quite good.

Morning from Singapore. Yep it’s nuts the car cost. A boring new Audi A6 = new Lambo huracan in the UK. One other point, a car is truly a luxury here, public transport is amazing, cheap and covers the whole island. You can go across the island for $2. As Mannish said, without the crazy tax I wouldn’t be able to drive around, it would be bumber to bumper. Try and drive in Bangkok, Manila or Jakarta and you will see the problems without it. PS It’s not only the tax the number of cars on the roads is fixed that’s why the coe biding happens. You are bidding on a fixed total supply which varies per month as cars come off the 10yr COE. It’s why it’s shot up to 150k. During the pandemic it went down to 40k!

Thanks as always for the listen. A good 20 years or so ago I had a similar experience to Manish, although I'd say in my case the adjective best used would be terrifying rather than weirdest. We're driving somewhere in the south east quite late one dark wet autumnal evening. It was a dual carriageway with our usual crappy lighting of the early 00's. Like many of us on here I hope, I am usually quite conscious to use the inside lane unless overtaking, but on this occasion for some reason I chose not to and was mercifully in the outside lane. Travelling slightly uphill at nsl + a little, through the dark and dankness of the night I briefly saw what looked like a horse galloping at full speed towards us in the inside lane. It was obviously over in an instant and I wasn't sure if I was going mad. I asked my passenger if they had just noticed the horse to which they nonchalantly ignored no doubt assuming I was indeed mad. A mile or so up the road I could see a vehicle pulled over with hazards on, and yep, it was a horse box with the back doors open.

Great to hear you discussing the pain of being a car person, living in Singapore! That $106k is now $150k. The ‘AFR’ is actually ‘ARF’, Additional Registration Fee. It’s so painfully expensive. But that quota works, keeps the traffic manageable. Public Transport and taxis are amazing for people not to need a car, but for this who want one, so depressing

I really like the music bit of the podcast, I've picked up some gems over the weeks!
If you're still doing suggestions for 2 car garage, here's one; you currently have a daily which is worth about £4k and a fun car/ chassis with a boring engine (examples of which could be another topic you could discuss). You get a generous windfall and decide to sell the daily which nets you £20k. What do you replace the daily driver with and what do you put in the fun car to make it more exciting?

R129 roof mechanism is electro hydraulic, for some reason the oil that runs it is not a service item so never gets changed. However it is relatively easy to do and should be done it’s over 25 years old now! The pump/reservoir is under the spare wheel. The oil return exits back into the fill cap of the reservoir. To to flush/refill, remove the boot carpet and spare wheel, undo the reservoir cap and place into an oil drain receptacle. Cycle the roof mechanism and roll over bar repeatedly making sure you keep the reservoir topped up. When the oil runs clear out of the cap, ensure the oil is up to the top of the reservoir, replace the cap and you’re done. Uses Mercedes central hydraulic oil, I believe it’s the same stuff used for the hydraulic suspension. This will keep the seals in the rams fresh as well, you do not want to have to replace those!

I know you found the Singapore prices extraordinarily high, but as an expat Aussie the taxation and duties for cars in Australia are horrendous for no clear rationale like Singapore eg Porsche 911 gt3 touring is 2.5 times more expensive than the UK. Looking behind you at car lights when you are going a little beyond the speed limit is something I used to do too. if a car was gaining I would slow down and let it past. One night ,very late / early, many years ago in a galaxy far far away something was twinkling behind me. It wasn't lights but after looking several times in my rear view mirror I worked out it was the reflectors of a roof mounted police light bar twinkling in the moon light. What was behind me was a motorway police car with no lights on following me. Considering the speed I was doing (Not immense but more than enough in a bog standard NA MX5) I figured the only course of action was to hit my brakes (I was in the inside lane and the stealth police car in the middle) and watch him sail past me, with no lights on, therefore caught out he wouldn't be able to stop me, touché. As predicted they came shooting past and then I just followed them, 100M behind for several miles until the next junction when one of their mates joined in and tailed me. I remained in this sandwich for around half an hour till they must have got bored.

    2 Car Garage Idea:
Let’s imagine the five of you have just turned 18, are as close as you are now, and want to celebrate the end of your school years. You haven’t seen much of Europe, but inter-railing is out of the picture because the motor vehicle provides more freedom, fun and flexibility. Furthermore, the thought of hours sweating on a hot train fills Neil Clifford with utter dread.
You’ve all worked a shitty job for the last year, and between the five of you, have scraped together £5,000 to buy two cars which will take you on this unforgettable trip.
You’ve decided you’ll all take turns driving so want a 2 seater sports car (must be convertible) and something big enough to carry the others and luggage. However, the bigger car should be able to keep up with the drop top.

Question: If you had one year left of driving. What car or cars from a bucket list would you choose. One you own or some you would buy before time ran out. Hmmmmm

I owned one of the last XM V6 every made W747OGK year 2000. 220PS 24v. A pretty quick car and very aerodynamic but I never went anywhere as fast as the one that passed Chris. Probably the most comfy road trip car I've ever owned!

Side note, a neighbor has a Lincoln Continental exactly as you showed in the picture, it is a thing to behold!

Can we all agree that Neil has the absolute best vocalisation of the word 'F*cking" in the world. Cant help but laugh everytime he drops it. Keep up the good work lads. 😊

Couldn't agree more. It's just so not a swearword, when Neil uses it. It has a quiet resignation, with a touch a frustration, and a large dollop of humour. Much like the 'C' word when used in Withnail.

On formula one. “It’s hard to stay interested” indeed it is. Channel 4’s (uk) prelim with the cases on the carousel is the best metaphor for F1 I’ve seen for a while.

My kids have moved out so we have spare bedrooms. And in my garage is a Boxster. , Corvette and 1947 Plymouth resto mod. There’s also wine, single malt scotch and beer. Come on over and enjoy some driving around my area west of Detroit. As a matter of interest how about coming over for the Woodward Dream Cruise.

    Two Car Garage. Real scenario…
We have two cars, I have a 2008 Aston Vantage N400 and my wife has a 2016 BMW M2. It’s time for a change as we have a long European Roadtrip planned for next year and the Aston has been a little problematic on previous such trips, and the M2 doesn’t appeal for a roadtrip. We are looking to change one or both cars. Must be petrol with spicy engines and good performance, and one must be a good fit for a 3,000 mile two-week roadtrip, with reliability being key. My car must have enough room for golf clubs and a trolley for general daily use. We have up to £40k to add to whatever we get for selling one or both cars.

General discussion topic for the panel - are cars getting too big for the roads and indeed the environment. Could smaller and lighter cars make a comeback if they could hold all the kit of modern family life? Which leads into - best smallest (but still practical estate/touring)….
