  • I am finally opening the remaining Winter Sown Containers and let me tell you... the results are INCREDIBLE! I am so impressed with this seed starting method. Not only is it way more cost effective than purchasing indoor seed starting materials, it is absolutely hands-off and SO EASY!
Started over 50 varieties of seeds my first year vegetable gardening by the winter sowing method and I ABSOLUTELY will do this again next year.
    Happy Planting,
    Maria

I’m in 5a (previously 4b) and hoping this thaw/cold cycle of weird winter weather we’ve had so far doesn’t crush my first year of winter sowing dreams! This gave me hope. Thanks for sharing! 🙂

I like winter sowing too… think I’m on my third year… but one thing I’ve learned is that like purple coneflower, lavender, and columbine they take longer because they need to have stratification… so you don’t need to be patient with them and they may sprout a little bit late. I also had good luck on the bunny tails, gomphrena, & monarda too… so give them a shot the next year… how do you agree on the water jugs is having the best luck. I also have good luck on pretzel containers that are circular with a clear top on them.

Thank you for sharing your experience with me! I love to hear how others do with their winter sowing. I’m definitely trying lavender and coneflower this year and I think I have sprouts already! Yay!! I should check my monarda. Oooh and that’s a great idea for the containers. Thank you! 💜

For identification, I’ve written on a narrow plastic pick with a sharpie and have shoved it inside the the milk jug handle. Happy growing!

LOOKS GREAT ! I did the same this past year! Best luck with milk jugs and planted lettuce and Spinach for the most part!
It’s fun to see the reveal in Spring ! Put outside in February 23rd, I live in Cleveland and placed in the south side of my house and they did great ! I used special seed mix, seemed to worked well !
Plant something, just to it 🥰🍀😇🙏🏼

Biggest thing for winter sowing failure is to top water the containers right after seed sowing as this buries the seeds and compress the soil. The soil should be premoistened (before putting into the containers) so that no immediate additional watering should be necessary.

I see you’re in Z6b, OH. I’m 5a, WI and last year it was a very warm winter and rain in January. The WS did terrible. This year warmer yet and rain with 50s next week. I will try some on the east side of house and see if that helps. I believe what happens here is they are sprouting and freezing as we went back to snow after I noticed the seeds looked like they were getting ready to sprout last February.
WS worked great in 2022, but this weather is too warm. The past week our lows at night were above freezing and now a bit colder, but days are increasing in temperature. So want to figure this out because I grow a lot and after last years gnat And aphid problems I would like to keep the mess outside.
Yes, the materials to grow have zoomed in price since the pandemic. Many sources were unavailable. Many have noticed garbage in commercial soils, bagged and delivered. I think they are getting sloppy. Had No gnats this year until I started lettuce 🙄. I can’t go through that again. I’ve been growing for decades and never had to sterilize soil.
They predict for our spring to be 3 degrees warmer and quite concerned because we lost a lot of plants from too advanced growth and late freeze.
You wouldn’t think soil should be a problem as I’ve done conservation work and we just sowed seeds late fall on the open ground. Some throw seeds in the garden and cover with a clear tote with holes. Who knows?
