  • Hello, and welcome back to the “Yours in old FoMoCo iron” CZcams channel! My name is Adrian Clements, and in this video we’re going to answer the question, “What the heck is a 1969 Ford SportsRoof?!”
You’ve likely already come across the “SportsRoof” body style marketing term at some point in your old car travels, and in this video #10 Part 1 we’re going to have a look at exactly WHERE and WHEN this term was used in the 1969 FoMoCo lineup. We’ll also see some examples of the use of the term “SportsRoof” in period FoMoCo literature and advertising.
In video #11 Part 2 we’ll see examples of some beautiful 1969 SportsRoof cars.
    Let’s get started!

When I entered Kindergarten, my brother, already in his early 20s, bought a brand new remaining 69 Fairlane 500 Sports Roof (I think the 70 Fords were just launched). It was yellow with white upholstery (bench seat) and the black dashboard. It had the 302, but from what Dad told me, it would go! I rode in it many times, and Dad used it on occasion as an additional car in the family. My brother's Fairlane was also a victim of me and my friends down the street. My 6 year old self got the bright idea to play car wash, with two dirty mops and a clothes hamper full of water! 😂 We started with my parents' cars, parked in the garage! I took on our family car, the 67 Custom 500, and my friends got our light blue 67 VW Beetle. I didn't remember us getting my brother's Fairlane, but years later, when Mom brought up the incident, my brother mentioned it. At one point, I dumped the whole hamper of water on the 67 Ford, then resumed mopping the roof. That was when Mom caught us and freaked out! 😂 She put a stop to it immediately. I can imagine it was an extra chore for Dad and my brother to clean up the mess we made. Dad brought us all to Fort Worth, Texas after he retired from the service, and entered civilian life. My brother bought the Fairlane from "King" Charlie Hilliard Ford, which at the time was on University near TCU in Fort Worth.

I like Formal Roofline with vinyl on the 69' intermediates, especially Cobra.

@Johnnycdrums, I agree! The 1969 Ford Fairlane, Fairlane 500, Torino, Torino GT, and Cobra 2-door formal hardtops - amazing that there were FIVE of them! - had a beautiful body shape.

@@adrianclements8916; It's amazing in 68'-69' they apparently manufactured Cobra's in all trim levels and roof lines, with three posible intake options, I think.
Making it even more complicated would be people showing up with 428 engines throughout the various intermediate trim line that aren't badged Cobra thoughout the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
A non-blackened front grill is easy to blacken, but the correct badges?
Anyone trying to make a non-Cobra into a Cobra might easily find gullible buyers because of the dozens of Cobra iterations Ford produced in that two year window.
I've seen some so-called "Cobra'"s show up on You Tube that I thought were sketchy, but still don't know if they are fakes.
Mopar and Chevy fan boys automatically assume Cobra's were just stripped down Fairlane's with hood scoop, bench seats, beefed up suspension and no radio.

Those flying buttress 1969-70 Ford and Marauder SportsRoofs were diabolical for visibility. Just try making a safe lane change to the right. Furthermore, just try finding one that a right hand mirror installed by the dealer!

There was a Ford Fairlane Fastback in 1968 in Canada. Bought one NEW. Do not recall it being called a SportsRoof here.

Correct-The SportsRoof term wasn't used in either country in 1968.

@BillMacGillivray-vi6db, the 1968 Ford intermediate models with the sloped roofline that extended to the rear of the car - namely the Fairlane 500 & Torino GT - were marketed as "2-door fastback" and not "SportsRoof", as the SportsRoof marketing name didn't debut until the 1969 model year.

Adrian, thank you for your videos, they show a lot of research and work goes into each one. Q: have you researched the 1970 Torino, was there ever a Boss 429 version offered or produced? Even hearing what Ford offered, if none were made would be interesting. Thanks, and again - Great work! Yours is my favorite channel!

I saw a 69 Torino fastback in Halfway Oregon, it was white with a red "C" stripe with bright red vinyl interior. I wish now I'd hunted down the owner and bought it
