Running a massive FREIGHT TRAIN on batteries is just stupid in mind! This is an usecase where you need LOTS of energy for LONG durations. Both are requirements that batteries CAN NOT deliver - neither now nor in the near future.
All those cells could easily be fittet in some fifty to hundered small cars for car sharing fleets for example.
But in a train there's just no benefit.
Diesel gives you around 41kWh of Energy per gallon.
A SD70 type loco has a capacity of around 5,000 gal from what I can find right now.
So that's about *205,000kWh* of energy such a loco carries around.
Wabtec claims in their own video that this very loco has around 2,400kWh of batteries.
    (see czcams.com/video/zIgmNOxa5aI/video.html)
So that's roughly about a hundredth worth of the energy of a typical diesel loco!
Okay, fine. There's this efficiency problem of a ICE.
But an electric loco also has converters and more or less the same electric motors.
And I undestand that this FLXdrive loco shall be used along whith diesel locos.
But even then: What's the benefit of THAT?
...apart from being able to do some green-washing...
This simply is a waste of very precious resources.
And amount of environmental damage the manufacturing of all those batteries has done compared to the real benefit of such a loco is just pathetic!

      Lol, braking energy????
The whole premise of a freight train is constant forward movement,
How much braking do you seriously think it would need to do to sufficiently keep enough charge in the battery?
      And its stored energy?
Isn’t that the same thing as a diesel locomotive does,
Use its stored energy to get it moving?

This thing is supposed to do that instead of a diesel locomotive. And when the train brakes, it recharges the batteries for the next acceleration phase.
Some people are just plain stupid.

This is pretty neat. I can see this as a great last mile loco where there isn't mineline supply. This the bottom line is this: North America badly need to agree on one solid loading guage, and an agreed height for OHLE in order to future-proof itself in the events of future sfuel shortage, and to get itself inline with Paris agreement climate targets.

While this is great, I would recommend electrification of tracks instead to draw raw power. The electric engines are more cost effective as sooner or later the batteries will need replacement. And considering there are 18000 of them, that's a lot! Now imagine if more such engines are put on tracks. All of them will need replacement. So I am not sure whether this will be cost effective in the long run. As it anyways needs to draw electricity to charge. Back in India, the Indian Railways is planning to go for 100% electrification and is on track to achieve its target! This is better as there are no battery replacement costs. Plus Indian Railways plans to generate it's entire electricity through renewable sources and solar! So it's a win win for everyone.

@@JadaKingdom971 such a battery "powered" engine only has around a HUNDREDTH of the range of a typical SD70 type engine. So for the desired use case (hauling massive freight trains) it's absolutely useless.
Tbh I don't think the manufacturer has this as a target by himself.
But also I'm not quite sure the manufacturer knows what his target with this engine REALLY is.
For shunting it's too bulky, for hauling it's too small (energy-wise), for smaller, local train companies it will be (way) too expensive.

I’m guessing 2 years. All the videos you can find on this thing running are about 2 years old. I can’t find anything new. I just want to see a video of 1 or more of these units moving under their own power pulling a heavy load. But you can’t and won’t. You see tons of videos of diesel electrics moving them for “testing” and maybe a video of it rolling by itself short distances. But oh no this is the future apparently. The sustainable “future” continues to expose itself as unsustainable by the laws of physics and thermodynamics.

Electricity on and off the grid will someday be produced only by a combination of green renewable energy forms: solar, wind, hydroelectric, sea tide movement
I have yet to find one yoo-toob video posted of any all-battery loco actually pulling a train, toy trains notwithstanding! I had a toy train set that ran on flashlight batteries, C cells, when I was 5. Most videos on these are about "testing". It looks like they are just dog-and-pony show things to parade around for the time being. Are these things actually worth a damn in the field? They've talked the talk, can they walk the walk? Are they merely pure show without any go?

I got the feeling most will end up in yard service. I just don't believe during an entire trip that locomotive car recharge the battery significantly enough. It may become more of a logistical nightmare when it comes to servicing the unit. When i mean servicing you can turn a diesel for it's next trip in a matter of minutes and that is more important to the transportation industry. Just look at how fast airlines turn planes. The odor of the people that were previously on the last flight that landed about 40 minutes ago is still in the cabin. Back to the locomotives, what happens when the cable get broken while still attached to the locomotive? I'ts going to happen somewhere. And the type of train it's deployed on matters too. What about in the event of an severe accident? These batteries have the potential to kill a person and start fires.
