A Cheap Holbein Alternative? Nyoni (MarkArt 72)Colored Pencil Review

  • These pencils don't claim to be Holbein Substitutes but that's what they remind me of! Today we are going to look at Nyoni pencils sold in America under the name MarkArt. They are available in sets of 48, 72 and 120. I bought the 72 set as it was the best value at the time: amzn.to/3fFg2gp
    *Affiliate links used
One thing that was very striking was the range of pastels and the decent white in this set. They really felt like Holbein colored pencils but I will admit that Holbein colored pencils are more pigmented and the pastels are more rich and opaque on black and they ought to be for what they cost! See Holbein pencils here. shrsl.com/33ti8
They also remind me of the Arteza set I have from 2019, I think they have changed factories since then so I am hesitant to recommend them now because I'm not sure what you will get. amzn.to/3lE3Q3e also the Artezas have moved out of the budget realm in price. If you have the old Artezas tho this set of 72 mark art will expand the pastel range of the pencils and you won't have many duplicates so that is nice. I honestly think they are the same pencil but different colors.
    Pros:
*Price (about 35 cents a pencil)
    *Strong, thick lead
    *Mostly water resistant
*Very well pigmented for a budget set
*The pastels are unusual in a budget set and very nice
    *Compatible with solvent like OMS
    Cons:
    *No open stock
*Sharp points can crumble under pressure
*This is a firm pencil so it may not be suitable with artists with arthritis and other sthrength issues.
Bottom line: I think these are an excellent quality budget pencil and if you are considering Holbeins or Arteza and the price has put you off I totally recommend you try these. I think them much better than the Deli pencils and they are the same price for the 72 set. I prefer a softer pencil myseld so these are not going to be a go to pencl for me but I'm glad I have them to go with my limited selection of Holbeins and Artezas. They might be just the thing for you. amzn.to/3xuscyS

Lindsay, you are the most wonderful reviewer. You are forthright about your preferences, but your approach centers on "What is this good for?" rather than "Me Like"/"Me No LIke." That approach makes it easy to make intelligent decisions about the products you review but it ALSO (!!!) teaches us what factors to consider when we're buying any kind of art materials. Thank you so much.

Lindsay thanks for the review. I have purchased 4 sets of budget pencils since April to keep from using up my Luminance, Pablos, Polychromos, Derwent Lightfast or Holbeins (only the 36 set of Holbein) for coloring books or sketching. I found that I like the Markart the best so far, out of the budget brands that I purchased; Starjoy, Brutfuner Square and Arteza. I tend to like the harder pencils like the Polychromos or Pablos and the Markart seem to hold their sharpness similarly like the Polys or Pablos when layering.

My daughter is back into art and Im sharing my alcohol markers with her and want to get her a set of pencils. This 72 set looks great! Thanks so much for this review and so glad I got to see the color range. I prefer soft pencils too but still love pastels in this set. Was just thinking about this last night. Having watched your review and Harry's at art gear guide, I realised I am happy with the nyoni ones. I did a comparison myself of one of each colour of each hrand and theres not much difference. They look the same and feel the same to me. Very pigmented at a fraction of the cost 🎉

Is that something I could ever learn? (free, loose painting? don't think so). I have about 200 10 year old Prismacolors which I am using up. I have some Holbein, and other brands. This set will be a nice addition. Love your advice.

Thank you for reviewing the Mark art colored pencils. I have the 120 set and I absolutely love them. I also have the square 120 Brutfuner, and the 120 Cezanne. I also have Derwent Lighfast, Polychromos and Prismacolors. The Markart and the Brutfuner are perfect to practice my skills with. I will certainly buy them again, but will not buy the Cezanne. I hadn't used them for a couple of months and I took them out of the tin and they reek with a very strong chemical spill. I'm going to take them out and put them in a jar so they can at least air out a bit. Anyway, as always a thorough and excellent review. I was lucky enough to get the 120 Markart pencils when Amazon offered them several weeks ago, and I’ve found that they measure up quite well to my “good” colored pencils bar none. As an over 70 retired senior with CIPN, Except for dr visits and 3 brief masked craft store outings, I’ve self quarantined since a year ago March, and what I would have spent for gasoline, I’ve used for double handfuls of every “good” pencil marketed in the USA, I think, to add to my sets of Polys and Prismas.
A big shout out to the Frugal Crafter and Lisa at Color My World for enabling me! It’s been less expensive than therapy, a lot more fun, and I have all the pretty colors to play with to brighten my days even when the sun doesn’t. 😋

I did not watch any videos of anyone and tested out many brands independently with no preconceived ideas. My experience was the Nyoni were almost identical to Polychromos in most colors. I did not feel they were like Holbein either. The set of Mark Art I tried were not as nice as my Nyoni for whatever reason. That can happen with manufacturing of course with any pencils.

I so appreciate the thorough review on these pencils, Lindsay. I am stuck in budget land, so price is important. I assume these are oil based. I am not crazy about the necessity of layering until I almost die of old age, and prefer wax pencils , but if these will work with wax-based pencils, that would really help me expand my color choices. Thank you for the tip of using odorless mineral spirits to blend these pencils. That would help a lot. Do you know of any tutorials about using these with wax-based pencils on how to get them to work together smoothly? I know you prefer not to review pencils, because you are so knowledgeable about how to use them that you don't need to swatch them and already know how to combine oil and wax-based pencils if needed for obtaining colors that may not be available in the wax-based sets. You are so very kind to use your so busy time to help those of us who need help with combining differently based pencils. Thank you so much! I would still love to see a tutorial on how you used these pencils to color that beautiful purple Geode. Has anyone else expressed an interest in seeing that?

I believe the Arteza experts don't have a pastel range because it's difficult to provide a budget pastel pencil with any reasonable degree of lightfastness - which is their goal more or less. I'm not sure how accurate their lightfast claims are, but they do have ratings. I haven't asked them about that yet or their testing process.

I don't want you to use your time for this when you already give so much of yourself and of your time to help us so much. I would appreciate your advice on who are some reliable reviewers I could contact who have evaluated these pencils and perhaps done a tutorial on how to use them by themselves, and if possible, with other brands. You will always be my number one, and I consider your time too precious to use any of it for a review on Soucolor budget pencils.

When I saw a number in a red box, I immediately thought of Arteza. It's interesting that the Mark Art sharpen well because my Arteza pencils are terrible for breaking when I sharpen them and on further inspection, the leads are rarely centered.
They do seem to have a better colour range, though. 😊
Interesting that Arteza are now available open stock now. I don't know about the US, but on the UK site they're offering single colours in packs of three rather than individual pencils, though I guess it makes sense to buy packs of three if you like creating landscape or botical pieces and use a lot of green. 😊
Do the new version of Arteza colours match the barrel colour more closely than they used to?

I was surprised to hear you say Holbeins are hard. I have the 50 pastel set (from Japan, NOT $4 each), and they seem quite soft…. not as soft as Prismacolors, but close the Derwent Coloursoft or Lightfast (though I only have a handful of each if those). I’ll have to take them out again and see if my opinion changed… I’ve barely used them… too precious.
One other thing I have noticed with the Chinese budget pencils… even the seemingly different colors look SO similar when I put fixative over them (I do that in my swatch book, after finding them smearing all over the facing page). I wonder why that is?
