How to "Cheat" at Beginning Weave Poles

  • Master weave poles easily in half the time or less! If 2 X 2 or adjustable weave poles and guide wires aren't working for you and your dog--or even if they are, but you'd like to fast-forward your dog's weave-pole skills--try this easy, old-fashioned weave-pole hack. Once your dog has committed the serpentine movement to muscle memory, then you fade the lure ASAP and begin building speed and independence. Gradually distance yourself and vary your position and behavior relative to the poles. Send your dog from different directions and varying distances to a "dead toy" or treat at the end of the weaves.

I started my adult Chihuahua on poles today, she clutched my leg, (rode it), through 20 poles, in essence, I STARTED weave poles today.

I love how attentive Maisie is. When you called her over, she came, and she didn't take her eyes off of you.

This was really interesting. Thank you. Good to know that this is still an option to try ( as I’ve read the luring method is not the “modern” way.) The muscle memory definitely makes sense. My young dog has loads of drive, but is struggling to weave now I’ve closed the channel width to a few inches. I’m going to give this a try. x

You could also use a long spoon and put some peanut butter on the end for a small dog. Great ideas ❤

That's a great idea! I often recommend that to my students with little dogs. Sometimes you need a really long spoon!

Glad I found this old video! I started agility training in may this year and the instructors recommended using guiding wires and we've been training upwards of 30 sessions now with some results but it's still not possible to remove the guiding wires completely. It was just really boring. Tried this out and it didn't take longer than 10 minutes until she was doing 12 poles without guidance from my hand... So thanks! :D

@@LisaLanserRose Yes we have been practicing with this method since I watched this video, Hugo is doing good, he seems more into the weave poles and more likely be successful by luring. Hugo is being Hugo, he is pretty agile, but probably will need millions of reps until he finally understands the weave poles to do it on its own. This method seems more suitable for Hugo, so will continue practice with this method at home. Thank you so much Lisa ! ❤️❤️❤️😊

Thanks so much for this video. This was the method I thought of when I decided to start agility. But I joined a class (figured I would learn from professionals) and they all said this method was no good. They push the 2 by 2 method and look down on even using guide wires. We had minimal success using the 2 by 2. My dog is an accomplished trick dog, but the way she learns is you have to just teach the whole trick at once. If you try to do it in "pieces" and put it all together, it just doesnt work. Its almost like she says "well yesterday this was correct and you treated me, but today it isnt correct and I have to do something different?" and she doesnt want to continue. So the 2 by 2 she would do but when you add more she is like, "huh?" They all say dogs can count, and she sure can! So the 2 by 2 she will do correctly, add more and she is like "nope." Knowing this I wanted to just teach her right from the start THIS is what you need to do to get your reward. I took a short break from classes and I have 2 weeks to get her to learn this. Starting tonight!

There are good reasons for 2 X 2, as well as many other ways to teach weaves, but they need not be mutually exclusive. Independence, speed, sends from all directions, and drive to the end can be reinforced later. I built on Maisie's weaves using Amanda Shyne's book, WEAVES THAT WOW. Let me know how it goes!

@@LisaLanserRose As I dog trainer I understand that not every dog learns the same way, like kids, so I am always willing to explore other techniques. I have found though that many dog trainers get stuck with one technique. Maybe cause it works for most dogs but then they are not successful with one dog and think its the dog, I dont know why so many trainers are unwilling to think outside the box. So your video gave me the push to try what I originally wanted to try (and thought was my own idea LOL) it gave me the confidence to tell me I really do know what I am doing! So after 15 minutes spread out over only 5 days (thats only 3 minutes a day!), she is doing a weave!!! I am walking next to her but not giving any more directions, and will gradually work at her doing it without me next to her. But it was like a light bulb went off in her head that said "oh THIS is what you want!" and she now ENJOYS the weave as opposed to her starting to shut down.. Before she would drop her head and tail, now she does it all smiles! I will post up a video some day soon!
