    For the record - gardening is never done, but this step keeps the Jungle in check and allows you to start somewhere. So, keep that in mind when people are recommending Black plastic and gravel, etc. Like anything, there are many variables and tools of the trade that will help you get to where you want to go. You've got a good start. Keep going

    Another great video; ask RTP Madeira for your own show. PS, we can't wait for 8 days time.

    Hi, sorry to tell you that won't get ride of your weed trouble, if you want a weed free garden you have 2 choices, start gardening a set area at a time and lay black plastic over the rest until you can work the garden, either way you need to strim the whole patch back to earth, once strimmered, lay the black plastic sheet from a roll and put some stone on top to stop it blowing, or cover the sheet in gravel, that way you will kill all weeds and roots, after summer lift the plastic and lay a local grass turf if you want greenery,

      James, you're breaking my heart! I thought this time I'd finally found the winning formula.
      I want to eventually cultivate the garden so will give your method a shot :)

      @@Livinginmadeira if you want organic then no more “Round up” try domestic worm farm, you tube it for benefits, the “tea” (fluids that drain out of farm) are said to be very best organic fertiliser you can get, and you can sell the worms to local fishermen, work on the hard Landscape first

      Yes, and definitely do something with the land. It’ll take continuous maintenance, graveled paths, and maybe a bit of insecticide. What are your “weeds”. When I was in Iceland, weeds are also wild arugula .

    In Germany its prohibited to use this stuff as it harms the environment. I guess you can only pull it or replace the soil. In such a large area I used bark mulch at home and that helped a lot.

    • @Livinginmadeira
      @Livinginmadeira  Před 4 měsíci

      Hey Cybil,
      the feedback i've gotten is that it seems to be prohibited in many countries but it's very popular here and is what all my neighbours use / recommend.
      I will however look for another method that is less harmful

    Love the vids... you are living the dream, lucky you, v jealous... but i don't think you mentioned how you pay for it all... do you work in Madeira? Or just loads of saving? If you don't want to say, maybe give us a general idea... anyway well done, Dan, cold and wet UK fan!

      @Livinginmadeira  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey Daniel, i'm living my dream too! I think that living in madeira can be achieved within different price points. I've heard of people essentially doing van life here, or you could try and buy a cheaper house and slowly do it up (which i'm doing). I used to work as a Locum social worker in London, so had some savings and also took out a loan.
      Hope that helps a little :)

    Does this mean we've to wait another 8 days for the end result?! At least you got a start on it & I'm sure in a year's time, possibly sooner, it'll look the part.
    Great to see you have Philippe trained well!
    By the way I'll be in Funchal at the end of April for a week if you're interested in a collaboration? Two Brits for their love of the Pearl of the Atlantic!
    Have a lovely weekend my dear ☺

      Me and Philippe would love to meet you in person! Please send me an email and we can collab over a Poncha in April :D

      @@Livinginmadeira My garden has been abandon for over 20 years, half is cleared and already start to pick my own grown vegetables, but I still have lots of land to clear, you need to move and clear the land, start to plant vegs as the season has already started, go to the Cooperativa Agrícola do Funchal, Caminho São Martinho, 56 Funchal 9000-273, you can buy lots of vegs plants ready to be planted, fruits tree, also lots of places in Madeira do free compost, not sure if Funchal does , but you can collect up to 400kg of compost each day
