- Every NBA team has made a terrible trade in their history there's no way around it. But there's some teams that just consistently make the same old mistakes and when they do make them they just couldn't possibly get any worse. One or two bad mess ups every once and awhile is always acceptable. When some are this bad though it really makes you question who's in charge of these teams.

The worst Jazz trade is BY FAR the Gail Goodrich trade, trading the 1979 pick for a washed *FORMER* all-star. The Jazz didn't make the playoffs, and that pick became Magic Johnson.
It gets worse. They actually traded THREE first round picks to the Lakers. The other two picks didn't turn into great players, but there was still a twist: Moses Malone. The Jazz had previously given up the rights to their 1977 first round pick for the rights to get Moses when the ABA folded. Upon signing Goodrich, they didn't have enough picks to give the Lakers for compensation. The NBA made an unusual deal with the team that allowed them to regain their '77 pick by renouncing their rights to Moses Malone, placing him in the dispersal draft. All so they could send that pick to the Lakers as part of the Goodrich deal. So they basically gave up Moses Malone plus first round picks in 1978 and '79, with the '79 pick turning into Magic Johnson.

@@tj5180 Dominique Wilkins was a bit of a different situation because the team was flat broke and already had Adrian Dantley at the small forward spot. They got a million dollars from the Hawks as part of the trade, which was a big deal at the time for a franchise struggling financially.

Though it worked out, the worst trade for the Raptors might be to get Kyle Lowry. They traded their 1st round pick for 2013 and a player for Lowry. Come off season, the Raptors saw the potential of a certain Greek prospect and were going to draft him. They attempted trades to get picks in order to draft Giannis, but none were successful. Eventually, the Bucks drafted Giannis and the rest is history.
The Heat also traded Grant Long along with Smith to Atlanta for Willis. Grant Long was basically the Udonis Haslem of his time.

In 1980, The Warriors traded Robert Parish and the 3rd Pick (Kevin McHale) for the 1st pick (Joe Barry Carroll) and 13th Pick (Rickey Brown).
What about the bucks just trading Dirk on draft day? Kareem’s trade made some sense as he was disgruntled. But based upon your logic for the other picks, Milwaukee missed out big by not giving Dirk a shot

What you forgot to mention if we didn't draft Aminu we were slated to pick Paul George and PG wanted us to draft him instead the front office as well as the coach messed over Baylor again like the Kobe pick and imagine PG, Blake, Kyrie, and DeAndre with Vinny Del Negro we would've done way better than with Glen Rivers.
The issue with some of the trades here are that some of the players were adamant to leave and would just be a cancer in the locker room so they had to be traded even if they were all time great. Some of the trades were reaches in my opinion

Psh, go look at the bad trades the Cavs made in the late 70s & early 80s and you'll see it could have been worse. The Stepien rule that still exists today was created because of the god awful Cavs owner at the time that traded away their first round picks like they were candy, away from a bad team and not for good players at that.
Literally, the guy wrecked the team so badly that the NBA allowed the new ownership to buy back first round picks in the years that were traded away after the team got sold.

How was that the worst Spurs trade? Demar was a solid return. Kawhi wasn’t playing, had a year left in his contract and was leaving for nothing. Instead of nothing, they got a 4 time all star back that played well his 3 years with the spurs. If the Raptor didn’t win the championship, that probably would of been their worst trade.

As a Nuggets fan, we had terrible trade in modern day, like trade 30th pick which selected Rudy Gobert for cash, trade 13th pick which selected Donovan Mitchell for Lydon and Trey Lyles, trade Jared Vanderbilt, Malik Beasley, Bo Cruz to Timberwolves for players.

3:28 If that's the worst trade the Rockets ever made that's really good. Barkley improved their team with a closing championship window since Olajuwon and Drexler were getting older. They had nearly the best record in the conference nad made it to the conference finals if I remember correctly. Horry and Cassell went on to help other teams but I don't think they could have carried the Rockets after their big three retired...

The year the Cavs traded Kyrie Irving for IT was the same year the Cavs traded IT for a bunch of role players and made it to the NBA Finals. Kyrie left Boston after two disappointing seasons and never made it back to the NBA Finals after leaving Cleveland. The Cavs also got Brooklyn's 2018 draft pick from Boston as part of that IT trade, which turned into Collin Sexton, who Cleveland later traded to Utah for Donovan Mitchell. I think the Cavs ultimately won that trade! 🤣

The Pacers worst trade was trading a first for Tom Owens who retires 3 seasons later. The pick became Michael Jordan
Spurs trading Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green for DeMar DeRozan, Jakob Poeltl, and Keldon Johnson wasn't their worst trade. DeMar DeRozan gave them a couple of good seasons and then was flipped for role players and Jakob Poeltl is their starting big man who's really solid.
Kawhi never wanted to play for the team. So it was a good move instead of keeping him and getting hold hostage. They got Demar who was in his best version obviously not better then kawhi and got Jakob one of the underrated defenders then drafted a player with potential like KJ

The Bulls went on to win three champions with that trade and Spurs, did they even make playoffs during that trade!?!?
For memphis it should be the otis thorpe trade. The pick they traded was the pick that detroit used for darko. Imagine if memphis still had their pick and used it for melo wade or even bosh

A couple of mistakes here. Warriors traded Webber for Tom Gugliotta, not Hughes. Also, Blazers have won an NBA chip. Finally, don't see how trading Leonard for Derozan is a bad trade for Spurs....

One of the main reasons Bill Russell wasn’t going to play for St. Louis or Rochester was racism… although he still experienced quite a bit in Boston; they were one of the only organizations who drafted and played black players at that time.

The Lakers worst trade is definitely Westbrook. The guy is the highest paid player in the NBA by salary and he's horrible. After they traded shack, the Lakers still had a championship viable team so I'm not sure how that is their worst trade. I understand none of the players matched up to Shaq but they got a killer deal because those three players were paid less than Shaq altogether and Lamar before he got crazy. Actually was a pretty good defender

To add insult to injury for the Bill Russell trade, at the time, both the Hawks owner and their fans were extremely racist. The fans (most were white and the team was located in St. Louis) pressured the owner and threatened violence if he didn't trade Bill away for the white hometown-favorite Ed McCauley and the owner caved in. At the time, St. Louis was a pro-segregation city and didn't allow black and white players to stay at the same hotels or use the same stores or amenities. After the trade, Ed helped them win their only ring in his rookie season and only played for them for 3 years. Meanwhile, the Celtics became a dynasty with Bill and beat the Hawks 2 years in a row in the finals right after. The Hawks never made a finals appearance ever since. Talk about poetic justice...
