    This song blew my mind when I saw it performed live in 1977 and it changed my world. By 1982 I was heading out on tour with Genesis and when I heard the guitars being tuned at the production rehearsals, I thought I had to be dreaming, but no. I was to blessed to be seeing the band rehearse Supper's Ready over the next few days before we headed out on tour to then see and hear it night after night. The shows at the Berkeley Greek Theatre were stand out nights for this track. Maybe it was the setting, but on those warm August nights with the Bay behind the stage, it was unbelievable for this 19 year old. I never heard a bad version and know I am beyond blessed to have watched them perform it night after night from stage side and other cool vantage points. I am also beyond blessed to own the drums Phil played that tour, so the memories of Supper's Ready and so many other cool tracks flood back every time I sit behind it. Thanks for posting this. 🙏👍😎

    This song is absolutely like no other. There have been long songs (this being 23 minutes plus), but there are none that have the time changes, stories mixed in. It absolutely is rock and roll at a higher level than most any band ever pulled off. Apocalypse in 9/8 can stand up to any rock instrumental ever created, as far as I'm concerned. It is sensational and no matter how many times I've listened to it (I cannot even count), it always gives me chills.

    If it weren't for Phil Collins, an entire generation wouldn't have been introduced to the Gabriel era music.
    First came that solo Lp in early 1981. Then, the local stations started playing a lot of stuff off of Abacab. "That was Genesis, featuring Phil Collins," was the way they announced the songs, at least here. Then everyone started looking into the back catalog. Phil was the catalyst for Genesis getting well known.

      Kind of true for me. I remember hearing Abacab on the radio, possibly also Turn It On Again. A mate had Genesis Live 73 that he never played. This was summer 1983. I heard the Watcher intro and was fascinated and bought the album. Later in 1983 I saw the Three Sides Live In the Cage ciseo on local TV, so I ended up with Genesis Live and Three Sides Live as my first Genesis albums. The UK version if 3SL ended with Watcher so it went full circle. Seconds Out came a few months later. I was too late to have seen them in 82 at the reunion gig. What a bummer.

    I was at a party, 2 miles from the venue, just outside Edinburgh, and I left after about an hour to go see the gig. It was kind of surreal, 'cos I'd left a friend of mine halfway through a half-bottle of whisky, getting steadily more pissed. When I came back to the party, 3 hours later, my head still full of 'Supper's Ready', my friend was sitting in the shower, under the cold water, covered in vomit, having drunk a pint of milk to settle his stomach after drinking the whisky. I think we watched 'Phantasm' after that.

      @@specialk8888 not sure if Phil really "fought" for it, they played it at the opening show of the UK indoor tour. But in hindsight, Tony and Mike were probably right to outvote it. I don't think Supper's ready would have worked in the context of a stadium show. And Tony was never really happy with just playing the louder second half. They pursued that idea in 1978 but dropped it at the rehearsal stage (or well I don't think it was ever on the 1978 set but I might be wrong). They did it from Apocalypse on in 86 and I think it worked in the context of the medley, but I'm not sure if Tony would agree.
      I do think that it would have worked in the UK tour given that these were mostly theatre shows (Earl's Court being the exception). But I guess that they didn't want to put effort in rehearsing it, bringing out additional equipment, programming additional sounds and light queues. They got the regular setlist memorised well so relearning like a quarter of your show is significant effort.

      @santibanks Před rokem

      @@a_cord Of course they already did that back in 1977 when they played football stadiums in Latin America. But I think those shows are exceptions. Genesis tours up till that point were targeting a specific size of venue which was smaller than what they targeted with the IT and WCD tours. It doesn't mean there are no exceptions (both smaller or larger sized, they did the Marquee club in 1982 and the Montreux casino in 1987. But it does not imply that the song actually "worked" in the context of the whole stadium show and for everybody in the audience. The size and layout of the venue and number of attendees are having an effect on how the show and the music is perceived but also on the course of the show. Not sure if you have been to the 2007 shows but Hold on my heart and Ripples were two tunes which did not work that well because they lose the focus of the audience. The front rows are engaged but it is pretty clear that people were running for more beer or to the toilet during those songs and plenty of people around me were just talking. If you have loud audiences (like in the USA), they will probably yell and babble through Lover's Leap and How dare I be so beautiful? It ruins the dynamic of the song if you are there as the audience is just not overpowered by the PA in those sections. If you listen to FM or Soundboard bootlegs, it all sounds fine because the band will play the song, they have their monitoring system, it doesn't really affect them (though Phil often jokes about HOMH as a toilet break, so I assume he does notice). But imagine standing in the back of Wembley stadium during Lover's leap…
