  • As a new locksmith I like videos that show the entire process from start to finish. Let me know if you prefer the same.
If I made mistakes let me know, if there is a better way to do it let me know.
Follow me as a pick, decode and cut a new key for this 1996 Toyota 4Runner. This process is the same for most toyota vehicles but 1999 and up may have a immobilizer system that requires a relearn, eeprom reset or PCM replacement.

Awesome, I've been a locksmith for 20+ years and I always like to see people like yourself share and learn the trade...I think you explain everything clear and understandable which is refreshing...keep up the great work, you have the skill for sure. And your 100% right on these groups that your turn to for help and tips and info and they do Alot of degrading you instead of helping...

Appreciate you sharing Chad!! I think it’s an awesome skill to have! Glad that you are learning and bringing us along!
I’m definitely interested in learning the key side of the industry. The more you know the better off you are! & it’s a huge advantage for you to know instead of being at the mercy of the few that do it!

Great video man, I'm a Hybrid technician in the Caribbean and I want to add this to grow my business. Folks my way don't like to share knowledge and I thank you for this. I am hoping to find other videos by you, showing the tools and where to get the supplies. God bless you brother.

Your content is great. Your calm demeanor and knowledge resonates with me. I can tell you are "thirsty " for knowledge and are a true representation of a professional. I use scopes every day as an industrial power generation tech. I'm always preaching the benefits of a lab scope for diagnostics to my co workers. The other day I shared your video with the use of a scope with an ignition sync to see pressure pulses in the rad . Needless to say you impressed a bunch of what I consider very talented techs. Not an easy feat

I get bored if I’m not learning something new even though my capacity to learn seems to be diminishing (I blame stress and workload).
I got my but handed to me last night on another locksmith job as well but I learned from that vehicle as well which will make me better next time.

The bad thing is most locksmiths are not keeping up with current technology in the immobilizer world. I don’t know if I have the time or patience to get into European eprom work.

    • @dtnel
      @dtnel Před rokem

@@ThePracticalMechanic It's not that they're not keeping up. Most Auto code cutter's can't "Smith" a key and this is what separates the Locksmith from the mechanic.
It's tough to keep up, yes I will say that but also if you network thru vetted groups (not the internet locksmith / codecutting groups) you can get help.
When you locksmith you need to decide what side of the business you want to be in.
I do Auto Locksmith, Repair, Diagnostics, Programming, Light Residential for lockouts, well being checks for the police dept, city, county, state as if you get good enough you'll get calls. Local locksmiths don't want to take calls at night especially on domestic calls as about the time you're halfway there they cancel.
I am trying to work thru the cancellation issues with the local police dispatch but it all gets paid by city.
People are leaving this industry in droves because of people not knowing the value of a key, cut and programmed to a vehicle.
I've seen auction guys who use the company equipment, supplies (this is theft) after hours without permission, do a bunch of work half price then when they're gone and a car dealer calls us in we have to go in and retrain what they've ruined as if someone tells me they can get a chip key for $45 I tell them to go for it and be careful as I won't go cut a chip key on site for less than $95 as there's a $75 trip charge because at the end of the day expenses still have to be paid. It's not a $3000 profession.
In regards to Eeprom work make sure you're insured properly as the CZcams content earnings won't cover some modules should you brick it. Remember if you brick it the customer has the choice to get it done at their location of choice so any price advantage you had goes out the door as if they have to tow it to the dealer 100 miles away and have it done then you're on the hook for the bill, the whole bill as regardless of what was wrong prior to you working on the job you will be on the hook for.
If it's got a plethora of codes, aftermarket remote start, etc then you may Want to double, triple or even quadruple the price as there will be issues.
Haven't taken a profit in 3 yrs and so far this year we're $15k in the Red as when you get jobs where you need pinning kits, etc you have to invest in the business. Luckily the wife works, we've been in the same house for 22 yrs this coming Feb.

I have not found much for online training. It seems to be a dark art not taught online. There are locksmith training expo events several times a year. I’m hoping to attend these events in the future to grow my locksmith skills.
