How to fix the screeching, squealing noise coming from your tumble dryer (Hotpoint, Indesit, Creda)

- My Hotpoint tumble dryer, some 10 years old, developed a horrible screeching noise several months ago. If you have an ounce of common sense, handy with a screwdriver etc, then this is an easy fix (so long as the bearing drum shaft is in good condition). Always seek professional advice if unsure!
Basically, the rear shaft that supports the drum weight , over the years, wears down the bearing/support that it rests on, due to gravity, eventually causing the screeching noise.
Takes about 30 minutes
Cost of bearing plate is approximately £10.99
Bearing plate for my Hotpoint was purchased from
www.espares.co.uk
If you’ve got the same drier as mine
Stock Number is: ES865498
Save some money on a call-out , which in the UK can cost between £45-100( says google!)
NB
If the drum shaft has been worn and damaged you made need a new shaft kit, in my case the shaft was OK. - Jak na to + styl
Wife said we need a tumble dryer. Quick Google of said noise led me to this video. This video just saved me about £296. The internet isn't all bad. Many thanks.
Happy wife happy life....👍
I feared the dreadful shrieking from my tumble dryer was a lost soul, doomed to tumble forever in a metal prison! Fortunately i found this video before trying to track down a young priest and an old priest, and though the hose was guarded by a gigantic acromantula (or just really big UK spider) I was able to complete the ritual and release us all from torment. Thank you so much! 👻
The old priest says "you're welcome" 😂
I think I've located it's new residence...
though I needed a new dryer. Only took me about 30 mins and now silent! Don’t you just love youtube! Thank you for the really clear instructions
Your welcome 😁
I found your video on Google and I knew I had the same problem. Got the part for £7 and I followed your instructions step by step. It took me half an hour and it's like new again ( about 8 years old). Trickiest part for me was getting the pin back into the 'S' shape and in position. Thanks so much you've saved us a fortune and I'm well chuffed with myself 🤗
Just fixed my dryer from following these instructions. It’s saved me so much money. The part cost me £4 from Amazon and took me 10 minutes to fit new bearing. Thanks so much
Glad it helped 👍
Ah thank you my man, £7 has saved me from spending £350+ on a new tumble dryer - simple yet effective instructions!

Like Jane, I found your video via Google, purchased the part on-line and hey presto, tumble dryer as good as new. Instructions were excellent and so easy to follow. Saved me a fortune as I was looking to buy a new dryer. Thank you so much for your help - much appreciated
Glad it was helpful!Have a "quiet" weekend👍
OMG. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Was about to buy a new dryer and somehow found your post! Dryer fixed for £7. So simple. Just brilliant. Thanks again
Glad it helped!
Great video. The noise was driving us nuts and I couldn't get anyone over to look at it for a week or so. Your instructions were spot on. Took me a day to get the part and 30 mins to fix. Thank you so much!
Cheers Alan glad the simple video helped , quite amazing how many people it’s helped 👍
Thank you so much for this excellent video. My son has just fixed my noisy tumble dryer using your instructions and the bearing bought from ‘espares’. I’ve saved £120 calling Hotpoint out.
My son found bending the pin back with pliers tricky so used grips. Managed to squeeze both ends back into ‘s’ shape at the same time.
Glad it helped!
Incredibly useful Thanks so much for the video. Couldn't find a straight answer online. Brilliant, saving me calling out an engineer and Hotpoint wouldn't offer advice beyond offer an engineer
Brilliant, thanks a lot for this, saved me a fortune. Bearing only cost £5 from Amazon
Glad it helped
Brilliant video. The fix is exactly like this - after I'd borrowed the right screwdriver. I'd never have known what to do without this. Many thanks
Glad it helped
Thank you for posting this video. I’m useless and DIY and your instructions meant that even I managed to fix the issue with our tumble drier. Keep up the good work!
You're welcome!
You posted this 2 years ago, 2 hours ago this helped me fix my very loud dryer.... Thank you very much :D
You're welcome!
What a legend! Same problem, missus found your video, ordered the part and I've just fitted it. The bearing that came off had a cut right through the side it had worn that bad! New part fitted in about 15 mins and job done! Thanks!
No problems and the boss is happy 😂
@@gsd32i that's it mate! She's happy, I'm happy 👍
Thank you for such an easy to follow video. Even I managed it!
Ordered part - £7 from - Amazon and job done 😃
Thank you for posting this. I was also looking at buying a new tumble dryer, as an engineer would be so expensive. I looked at your video and you made it look so easy, I thought I’d give it a go. The “rear drum bearing teardrop” cost me £5 from Amazon and I swapped them over with just one bit of help from my son.
Hi . Glad it helped . 😊
@@gsd32i this will work on the ariston tvf63x
Those repair people charge ridiculous price and takes advantage.
Great video! Thanks very much for posting this. I've fixed my parents' tumble dryer now. Just to say for others about to do this, the split pin snapped on me when I was bending it back into the S shape. Fortunately I had some other wire that worked as a replacement. Just be careful bending it back into the S shape, folks. Depends how much it's been used I guess. This video saved us a lot of money we haven't got, so to GSD, I salute you sir! Thank you again! You're a star! (love your dogs too)
Glad it helped! My dogs have just come back in after a ball throwing game, panting lots now.😂
@@gsd32iAwwww 😁🐕🦺
Brilliant video, I'm a right numpty but this worked perfectly. Saved me a new dryer😊
Mate great video, £6 new bearing, 20 mins later sorted. Cable ties great tip. Thanks again Happy NewYear

Great tutorial took my half hour to replace parts £15.53 with delivery for the bearing.Nice one👍🏾
Glad it helped
Thanks so much for this, my dryer has been making the same horrendous noise, ordered a part for less that a tenner, less than half an hour to fix and sounds like new again. So chuffed!
Can only echo the awesome comments on this video. I managed to fix our tumble dryer with this and it's saved a hefty call out fee or a new machine.
Hu Robert, glad it helped.👍
Many thanks for this video saved me a couple of hundred quid, followed the steps and now it’s working as good as new, you are a legend 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Glad it helped 👍
Thank you so much for this video. I was able to fix my dryer myself for 15.50 pounds with your help. ❤
Glad it helped 👍
Mate you are a hero, exactly what was happening!
Brilliant video, I knew a bearing was gone somewhere due to the sound, this video made it simple as anything. Thank you
Glad it helped 👍
You're a life saver! Well, certainly a money saver! Espares + time for delivery of the part + half an hour and our tumble dryer is fixed. 🎉 Thank you so much! 👌👍
Forget to say, order total, inc p&p, was just £12.98 - boom! 💥
Glad it helped!
Thanks for the video, just what I was looking for. Got the same dryer only the 8kg version and I got the part from eBay for £3.40
Glad it helped
Can't thank you enough, same problem, quick look on CZcams, and bingo. Solved .👍
Glad it helped . Have a great quiet weekend 😂
great track on this video and thanks for the repair advice, just saved myself £300
Just done mine on my hotpoint the bearing was worn the same but put a nice groove in the shaft so bought the kit from espares. The front drum rollers are worn-out also up and down play in the drum but its a 10 year old dryer thats had endless repairs to it time for a new one next time 😂
Absolutely brilliant video, saved me over £800 since j was considering buying a washing machine !
Glad it help 👍
Thanks so much for posting..saved us a new dryer! Added bonus was the part number too, hubby has just fitted it, thanks again 👍
Glad to help . Bonus points for hubby 👍
Thank you for putting this out here. I have the same problem bearing is badly worn. I have now ordered for replacement part and grease. I am happy to be useful afterall 😀
Glad I could help
Thank you so much. Fixed. You are a star. Really appreciate you taking the time time to make this video.
Brilliant video and diagnosis / repair steps spot on
You, sir, are a legend. Thank you for this tutorial! Saved me plenty of money.
Glad it helped 👍
Great video. Off to order the part now. Thankyou so much.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for a brilliantly straightforward video. Bought the part for £3.25 on eBay, followed your video and fixed it within 20 minutes. Thank you so much! #thisgirlcan
Glad it helped 👍
Just a suggestion: if you turn the drum, it rotates that shaft, making it easier to align the pin. Similarly, if you lift the drum slightly with your hand, you can also move the shaft!
Thank you so much for this tutorial, I almost bought a new machine until I found this.
Hope it helps . Just make sure you unplug the machine first ! 👍
@@gsd32i I repaired it today and all works well. Thanks again.
VERY good video. Straight to the point. Thank you so much.
I just want to say I am so glad you posted this video. It has saved me a £65 call out fee plus parts price. I ordered the part from the website you suggested and fixed it myself! Feeling very accomplished now 😄 so Thank you !
Your very welcome , enjoy the peace and quiet 🤫.
@@gsd32i mines not doing that but if you go on my channel you will hear what sound its making I'm assuming it's the motor
Thank you so much for posting this! Managed to do it on my own quite easily. Getting the shaft up was a bit of a pain but the cable tie helped! Saved me buying a new tumble dryer. Thank you 😊.
No problem 😉
@@gsd32i my old school had the same dryer with 2 wave paddles
instantly found my fault ....thanks mate
Thank you! You just saved me at least 220$
Glad I could help save some money!👍
Damm shame their washing machines now have sealed drums, used to do a similar fix on those! Thanks for the vid' 👍
No problem 👍
Thanks bro! Cumps from Portugal
I will do this afternoon thanks so much for sharing your knowledge!
Thanks for taking the time and trouble to make this excellent video. Really appreciated.
Glad it helped 👍
I opened this video to address the loud noise issue in my Hotpoint dryer machine. While the specific solution I was initially looking for wasn't present in the video, I identified the problem - a loose fan. After tightening it, the noise disappeared. I share this experience in the hope that it proves helpful to someone facing a similar problem.
Thanks to your video I saved myself loads of money great video easy to follow definitely a thumbs up
Glad it helped
Excellent instructions. Thank you very much!
Thank-you. Did the trick for my Indesit IDV65 dryer. 20 minutes, job done. Now wondering what else I can fix...
Thank you for posting this really helpful video. Saved me loads of time and expense. Easy fix 👍
Glad it helped
Great video , I've replaced a few of these and found that applying some high temp copper grease to the shaft makes the new bearing last twice as long (bearing lol 🤣)
I didn't have any bearing grease. All I had was silicone grease. I just remembered that I have copper grease from when I do my car's breaks. I will now take the tumble dryer apart again and use the copper grease. Thanks for the advice.
I have a hotpoint Aquarius and this video helped me sort it in ten minutes. It is as easy as it looks. Very helpful. Thank you
Amazing thank you managed to fix my own dryer.
Your welcome 👍
£3.25 - done! brill
Brilliant help... thanks very much..
Useful video and a great Afrobeat soundtrack!
Superb video. Well done.
Great video bro, thank you so much!
Thanks! Really helpful👍👍
Glad it was helpful!
if you turn the original 180 degrees and drill a small hole in the casing it will keep it going long enough to get a replacement
Great video! Thank you dude for posting 👍
No problem 👍
felt like I was watching oceans 11 with that music
Shit was Lit
😂
Great video.very well explained.
Thank you!
Brilliant thank you for posting 👍 It's stopped the loud screeching but there's still an occasional squeak. Anyone got ideas what that could be?
Brilliant thank you 🙏
excellent camera work thanks for info - subscribed👍👍💪
No, it was a bit (3 yrs old) but not as wild as your demonstration. Noise seems to be coming from the back bottom right where plastic tubes are.
Mine was really simple as when I pulled the dryer out and inspected the bearing it was clearly worn out. I have had a look on CZcams and obviously there are other bits and pieces that may cause the noise, belts, rollers etc, if its not the tear drop bearing that was in my video. If it was me I would pull the machine out and switch it on to try and work out exactly where it was coming from and then remove then panel to see what was needed to be replaced and then go to one of the spares websites and see if it was cost effective to replace it or not. I am no expert and if it was beyond me then it would be a callout fee for an engineer , which would annoy the heck out of me. Good luck.
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for your video, so helpfull.. i just fix my dryer and all good.. 👍
Glad it helped
This man is an absolute genius…..bought the bearing for £4 …..the hardest part is pin ….a little tip I found made it easier ….when you straighten the pin make sure the hole is top dead centre….then gently tap with a hammer…..easily a £60-70 job …..cost me £4 ….and 30-40 minutes of my time ……you sir are a CZcams legend…..thank you
👍👍
thank you
Thanx you so much
thank you so much
You’re welcome👍
very very nice thank you so much ❤❤❤
Most welcome 😊
This has fixed the noise when the tumble dryer rotates in one direction, in the other it’s got worse. Any suggestions ?
Your tumble drier goes both ways ? Mine didn’t …does the noise come from the replaced bearing ?
Mine is doing this but it’s scraping and screaming too! Bought the part for it cost £7.99 off eBay going to have a go tonight mines only a indesit 4kg compact. Should be easier I hope lol
Good luck!
@@gsd32i the indesit is41v is a square bearing
this will also work on some aristons and splendide tvm63x dryers
Thanks buddy!!!!!
Any time!
Really helpful video, thank you. I followed this except for cleaning the shaft collar and regreasing. Now the same noise you had has been replaced by a significantly higher pitch squeak. Do we think that’s likely because not cleaned or greased? Or something else perhaps to consider?
Hi Michael . Was the bearing you replaced worn like in my video ? With the machine turned on can you definitely say that the noise is from that bearing , you may have to have the machine pulled out . If the nose is from the replaced bearing then yes clean and grease . 👍
@@gsd32i thanks very much. Yes was definitely like yours on the verge of wearing through. I’ll get it apart and clean and grease and see how I get on then! Thanks again for video l, really helpful!
I thought i had the same issue but it was actually the plastic fan on the back that came loose
Nice to see Michael Jackson helping you out at 4:22.
Hi, I was so proud I did this and yet, it still is making that noise. The pc was not that warped. What is the next option?
Hi, was the bearing worn, ie the hole itself where the shaft sits in, was that hole no longer round, just like the video.
Thanks! 👍👍👍
No problem!
My new part arrives today. Hopefully all goes well 🤞
Thanks for this video. I had a look at the drum bearing on ours and there was some small metal shavings but nowhere near as worn as yours. I replaced it as you did anyway. Worked for about half an hour after that then started squealing again BUT this time the squealing carries on even when the drum stops for a few seconds so I’ve realised it can’t be the bearing.
Anyone got any ideas what else it could be??
IF THIS VIDEO DOESN'T SOLVE YOUR SQUEAKING, READ THIS
Ok so, I narrowed the squeaking down to the back of the machine, bottom right. Which on mine (which is a condensing dryer) is the pump. Bought a new pump on ebay (half the price of some spares websites) and I will change this and hopefully that solves the problem.
