    What a satisfying performance of an epic classic that most major opera companies don't dare attempt! Wichita Opera put together an excellent cast, vocally and visually up to these demanding roles and a dedicated ensemble of chorus and dancers and a mise en scene to back them up. Rossini honorably served! Bravi tutti!

    Surprisingly good for an opera company in Kansas. We don't have great opera singer masters with us today, so this production is on par with today's opera quality. Lucas Meacham sung the role well. Excellent voice and he handled the songs with the wide range very well. The final solo number by Meacham was accurate and powerful and supported by a great cast- Four stars!!!

    • @Jaydoggy531
      @Jaydoggy531 Před 6 lety +2

      Waiting before applauding is rather new. People would have been applauding and talking all throughout the performance, particularly in grand opera - it was an all-day affair. Food and drink served throughout, multiple side shows and other performances, hecklers and all. The last bits of music were always written with the mind that people would have been cheering and applauding over it. It wasn't until Wagner that he demanded silence for reflection.

      They have really made many cuts, to reduce the length of the opera - I've just noticed - in Arnold's intervention he sings the aria "Asile Héreditaire", then three rallies to fight: the first one they have skipped: "Des longtemps Guillaume et mon père - ont prévu l'heure des combats - sur le rocher - au fond du châlet solitaire - courrez, armez vos armes" --- then the second: "Plus de larmes stériles..." and the third, the vibrant Amis, Amis, secondez....
      the 2nd and the 3rd has been included. Anyway, a great production. Regards from Lima, Peru Feb 3, 2018

      That's right, but it is very difficult, even impossible, to give Guillaume Tell in the complete version. It's too much long. I saw many times in France (I am French), and I never saw the complete version : the opera is already given with many cuts. On the other hand, le role of Arnold is very difficult to sing, and it's too much tiring for the tenor to sing the complete role. Excuse for my bad english.

    C'est l'un de mes opéras préférés, bravo à Monsieur Rossini qui apparament, maîtrise à la perfection la langue de Molière. En revanche, comme je viens de commencer à regarder pour la première fois ce chef d'oeuvre, j'ai été extremement déçu de l'horrible orchestration de l'ouverture, le chef d'orchestre devrait revoir sa copie, elle n'est pas jouée avec émotion. Au début, le violoncelle joue trop rapidement, jouez avec tristesse ! Ce passage montre l'occupation des Autrichiens sur les Suisses, penez votre temps !! Et je ne parle même pas du final, qui devrait être un grand final triomphale et d'espérance pour le peuple Suisse. Toujous la même chose pour le mouvement pastoral, la flûte et le cor anglais jouent trop rapidement ! Encore une fois, PRENEZ VOTRE TEMPS !!!!!!! Jouez le avec tranquilité, on est à la campagne à ce moment de l'ouverture.
    Bref, franchement monsieur Todorov, je ne vous félicite pas. (Et puis entre nous, il y des biens meilleures chefs d'orchestre que vous, et de loin !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!).

    Complete? This is like...slightly more than half the opera. The cuts are brutal and disgusting. At least, don't advertise it as complete. This production of Wichita GO is very better than these of Faust, the opera by Charles Gounod. I saw it on You Tube and it is completely ridicoulous : the voices are horrible, the set too, the curtain makes a noise each time it is opened or closed. The singer who sings Faust loses his bart and his moustache before Mephistopheles makes him young......Very laughing production indeed ! But this Guillaume Tell is very good.

    Not to get into a political discussion here but I am wondering who would be more deserving of the death penalty, Giaocchino Rossini or Timothy Mcveigh? Timothy McVeigh for only doing the one thing wrong that HE did wrong or Rossini for doing the three things wrong that HE did wrong;
    1). Having the music of the end of the overture part of the overture only and not using it in the finale of the opera.
    2). Originally the music from the finale of the William Tell Overture was intended to be sung at the end of the Second Act (in addition to at the end of the overture) but later Rossini removed it so it's only appearance is in the overture.
    3. If he didn't want to use the finale of the overture for the last melody in the opera, he should have at least used a piece that was as rollicking as the end of the overture.

    • @resborzage
      @resborzage Před 8 lety +3

      Rossini did put together a later version of G.T. much shortened and in which the quick step from the overture is incorporated into the finale ultimo. It's been performed as an add-on to a recent recording, and while it's sort of fun, he was clearly right in the first place. For one thing, the finale to this opera is arguably the grandest and most noble ending to any opera, I guess, along with that to Fidelio. Nothing expresses man's longing for freedom better in music.

      I think you are very severe. To sing Guillaume Tell, il's necessary to have a very high voice, and Michael has it. I heard him in Paris three weeks ago, in an Gounod's unknown opera, La Nonne sanglante, and he was excellent. In Guillaume Tell, he is infinitely better than Marcelo Giordano I heard about fifteen years ago in Opera-BAstille : this one had many problemw with the high notes. Michael Spyres has a very high voice et he has no problem with the high notes. I think this production of Wichita GO is very honorable : the set is classic, but of good taste, ans the singer are good. Excuse for my bad english.

    • @absdyna
      @absdyna Před 5 lety +2

      Rossini wrote Arnoldo with a dramatic, baritonal tenor in mind. He wrote the role for Andrea Nozzari, who was the famous baritenor of Rossini's time, and his favourite tenor. However, the role was hijacked by Gilbert Louis Duprez (any tenor worth his salt will know this name) and his 'Do di Petto' which drove the crowd into a frenzy. Never before had an interpretation been this dramatic, this raw, this powerful and this loud.
      Today, due to the high lying nature of the role, it is undertaken by light tenorinos and while they can sing the music, they fail by and large to provide the dramatic intensity because the music is too dramatic. The definitive version is definitely Mario Filippeschi's, who had the ringing heroic voice along with the easy top needed for this role. Michael Spyres' baritenor is a great fit for this role. This is not a role for tenorinos like Florez. This role requires a meaty voice, capable of easy high Cs and C#s.
