I almost broke my arm with the gen 3 drilling 4inch hole saw .. the arm survived but the drill don't. So i upgrade to the gen 4 and i like it better less heat more power and safer . Also got the gen4 impact and its better then the gen 3 , faster more powerfull and the triger is a pleasure every time .
Thank you for a great video. I love my Milwaukee gen 3 for many reasons but I especially love it’s compact size - especially when paired with a High Output 3.0ah battery. That compact combo is more important to me over absolute power and sways me towards Milwaukee over say Metabo HPT or the larger Dewalts. Both impressive tools but a little on the big side for me. I’m glad Milwaukee have kept the compact form factor for the gen 4 drill.
Yeah if that’s what you are looking for it’s still got that plus more safety. And that’s not to say it’s not powerful. I just didn’t think it took a huge step forward.
Agreed! That’s why I got the Gen 3 on a deal with 2 5.0ah batteries, case, and charger at the orange store. $229. Bare online now at $99, which if you have the batteries makes a lot of sense to get.
I have Makita, DeWalt, octane Rigid. These in the mid tier range so I was looking for something with more bang for your buck without going for the XGT 40volt Makita. Liked that you didn’t feel too obligated to push the latest/ greatest simply because it was new. Be nice to hear how you made out with your warranty servicing, that’s an important component that’s usually only mentioned in passing. Thanks again.
I filmed a short video talking about the warranty experience but it hasn’t made it to the channel yet. In short I was without the tool for 10 days but they replaced that drill and a vacuum that was experiencing the same problem with new tools. The hardest part was simply packing up the tools and finding a fedex location. Aside from that it was pretty painless and I was notified along the way what was happening with my tools.
Great video I own the Gen 3 2804-20 and it’s been a great drill that I bought mainly for running my auger bit for ice fishing. I just purchased the Gen 4 for 90.00 on Amazon tool only. I thought for that great price it’s a chance to get a backup. 👍👍
I saw that deal. I always get nervous about those deals on amazon (for Milwaukee especially) when they seem to be too good to be true. Glad it was legit for you though. I really like the newer drill.
I got the new m12 fuel kit use mine daily for work.
once my m18 fuel kit dies I will get new the ones. My company has everything Milwaukee plumbing power tools electrical power tools and they just keep on ticking.

One thing I noticed as a person who owns both is that yes, they’re very similar, but when it comes to masonry the gen 4 blows the gen 3 out of the water… i noticed this in my off screen testing, but only tested with a 1/4” masonry bit so far.

Thanks for the comparison, it makes me want to stay with the Gen 3 although I believe most people will switch based on the impact alone. And I wouldn't disagree with them.
I'd love to see the Bosch Profactor 18V drill pitted against the big boys. From what I've seen it's on the heavy side like the 999 but it performs as good as the 40V Makita although you'll need the 8ah battery to do so

For some reason my gen 3 handle didn’t have the pin either and the shape of the tabs were more round than the normal square shape

I just bought the Gen 4. $399 at Home Depot with impact driver and 2 X 5.0 ah XC batteries, AND, a jigsaw. Could not resist the deal. Kind of ridiculous that the assembled side-arm doesn’t fit in the case, though. It would take a minuscule change in the case moulding to make it fit.
It drives me nuts to this day. That is a killer deal!
Looks like the new handle can be relatively modified by inserting a bar from top to bottom. When I receive mine I might test that out. There is also an option t make a serrate purchase of the former handle. As for the new kickback prevention feature, it can be disabled by placing the selector to neutral, and and pressing the trigger five times. Am thinking maybe the auto stop occurred when you were trying to drill the last hole?
I don’t see how you would insert a bar unless you drilled a new hole. The previous gen had this and as you pointed out you can purchase the former handle but it won’t fit in the hard case that the drill comes kitted in. As for the auto stop I can’t remember back then how I tested it initially. It’s possible that it did. I know in other videos I turned it off on the harder stuff so it didn’t impede the results.
Gen1 also has trigger problems, too.

And actually, I submitted my info for the batteries, 2 weeks ago, for the latest two, tools I purchased. And have heard nothing back.
Really hard to compare an 18 volt to a 40 volt brother. It all comes down to size. I think that's why Milwaukee hasn't gone past thr m18 line. The 18 volt batteries are all ready pretty heavy. The 40 volts are ridiculous. M12 size is so perfect. I just hate they don't have as much power as the m18.
I understand what you mean about the 40 volts to 18 volt comparison. The Milwaukee is still a great drill, but unlike when the Gen 3 came out and it was the most powerful drill, others have caught up and even surpassed it. Still competitive but just a runaway at being the best. And with more companies moving to higher voltage lines (currently Metabo HPT, Flex, Hilti, Kobalt, Makita), it might force milwaukee to do something about it.
So if you didn’t have either the Gen3 or the Gen4, which would you buy today? I’ve got a 2602 that just won’t die and without a clear cut winner in all these videos and comments, I’m almost tempted to keep ridding it out with my Gen0 or whatever the brushed 2602 is…
I would go Gen 4 if the two are equal deals. That being said the performance is close enough if they deal was on the Gen 3 you are giving up that much.
My experience with Milwaukee is there awesome and super powerful at 1st but after a short period they break and if out of warranty in the UK of a year or 3 if you remembered to do the extended warranty they become to expensive to fix . As parts aren't easily available here like they are in the States
I have had decent luck with my tools but I have had to warranty a few. Two have been replace with a new tool, one recently was fixed and returned to me (it was during the 4th year that I have owned it). It sucks that it’s not the same where you live but I appreciate you sharing what it’s like for you. It helps provide context for those that might be considering buying.

Also, doesn't the gen 4 have a mechanical clutch as opposed to the electronic one on the gen 3? That seems like the biggest upgrade in my eyes.

They are different. The Gen 3 is electronic and the Gen 4 is mechanical with better feel to it.
Which one would u pick mainly home use Gen 4 or Makita kit 18v
I would probably Milwaukee just because of the size and availability of the M18 platform. Milwaukee has beaten the 18v LXT in my testing and I think they are great tools. But to be honest you would be happy with either.
Does the DeWalt DCD999 have a autostop/hitch function like the Milwaukee GEN 4 2904-20?
It does not. I have heard rumors that the replacement for the DCD999 will though.

It’s very similar to that the the Gen 3 in my opinion. I haven’t had any issues with it but I didn’t have issues of it affecting the drill with the Gen 3 either.
Have you tried deactivating the antikickback to see the difference. I heard that the feature is very sensitive. Like the Bosch, I noticed a lot of people just turn the anti kickback off to go full throttle. My biggest concern with the Gen 3 is the darn trigger breaking on you.
I have in other testing but not in this video. It’s not as simple to turn off as the Bosch but it can be done. Overall in my general use of the tool I haven’t noticed it being a problem.

@@ProxyFinal in my testing it is a small improvement but aside from the added safety not necessarily something that warrants the upgrade.
@@TinkerWithTools I sold my gen 3 because of the trigger issues I had with it. Then on the same day, I saw this great deal on the gen 4. Got it for the same price as the Gen 3. Going to see how I like it. Then again, I am a Metabo HPT guy lol.
So we, should be very careful with the large handle in heavy loads 🚧 , with DeWalt DCD999 .
I think you have to be careful with heavy task on a tool but dewalts lacking anti-kickback is something that I hope the remedy in the next generation.

Yes.
How has the gen 4 done after some break in? Still cutting out?
No complaints. It's a solid drill. When I use it with a 6.0 HO battery or the new forge I found it's just about as strong as anything out there. If I push it hard enough with a big enough bit, you can stall it but overall, I can do that with just about any drill. I have no complaints with it.
How does the Gen 4 compare to the Makita XPH 14? I had the Gen 3 and preferred the Makita. The Gen 3 got really hot quick
I think the Gen 4 is similar to the Gen 3 in that regard. They are both pretty compact tools. It will win on power vs XPH though. I have a video of the Makita vs the Gen 3. The 3 won in almost every test and since then the Gen 4 is marginally better than the Gen 3. I will likely revisit it when a new makita comes out but I might have to do the versus before that too.
@@TinkerWithTools yes I saw the Gen 3 vs Makita video. I did my own head to head on a job site and it was mildly alarming how hot the Gen 3 got drilling in hammer mode with a 1/2” masonry bit. Twice as hot to the touch as the Makita. Same experience drilling in porcelain tile
In my head it makes sense that concrete or masonry would heat it up the most. At the end of the day Milwaukee makes a very compact drill that is still one of the most powerful. All the power makes a lot of eat and there is only so much heat management you can do in a small frame.
I agree there's no great difference in the two. If the gen 4 can't surpass 2 seconds faster than the gen 3 I say it's kind of a let down. One good thing is the anti kick back. It's depressing that after upgrading they don't make it that worth it
The difference to me is the gen4 won't get me killed when I'm on a ladder on the side of a house, making a 4 inch hole in the wall for a bathroom exhaust fan.
@@FireBarrels I agree the extra features is a big help but something like some extra bpms or rpms couldn't hurt
@@weldonpinder7295 I would like more rpm on low gear if they could keep the torque the same but more rpm on high would just make bits and hole saws wear out faster
@@FireBarrels true I agree. I would prefer also more bpms. They actually dropped them in the gen 4 and that's one thing I was looking forward to because I drill quite a bit of masonry but it's just 3/16 bits
@@weldonpinder7295 Are the 3/16 holes for plugs and screws? I just drill 1/8 holes for #8 and 5/32 for #10 screws and you can drive most screws directly into the wall. If you're using an impact do not drive the screws in full speed.
I would say that it depends on what you have.
If you have the gen 3, and like it, keep it.
If you don’t have anything, the gen 4 is a great option, especially with the Black Friday hack that’s going on now.
Milwaukee is due for a battery upgrade, and rumor has it that it will happen soon.

What's the fastest hammer drill you ever tried im on craftsman and metabo hpt platform but don't mind switching if there's more powerful and I hate dewalt I'm a formwork carpenter I'm looking for most powerful and fastest
I would say that the top of the top for me are the Makita XGT, The M18 Fuel and the Flex. The Flex has some insane raw speed and power especially on turbo with the right battery (like the 6 ah stacked lithium). Those other two are similar as well.

I love the XGT drill.. it's just a pricey tool. That's the only con that I have, but I do love it.

I guess what are you evaluating it on? it's not dead simple like some clutches but I find that it has more granularity in its adjustment that just about any other drill. I know some people rave about mechanical clutches being far superior but the best clutches I have ever tried to date have been an electric style clutch that you find on tools like Festool and Metabo (German). So I think it just comes down to the execution of it. Is the Makita the best clutch I have ever tried? No, but it didn't stand out as being a bad feature in all my use. That's just my two cents though.
The Only UpGrade I see is They gave me a Free 8.0ah Battery when I bought the Gen4 Hammer Drill / Impact Driver Kit , I still like my DeWalt Power Detect Hammer Drill Better ....

Push the forward reverse selector to the middle and pull the trigger 5 times.
So, when it comes to actually using the drill as a drill….. the gen3 wins….. Not sure I’ll ever be using an 1-1/2” paddle bit anytime ever. But, the speed bore, all day long.

@@maxthomas6933 if you go to the website milwaukeetool.com then click on support and fix my tool, it will take you through to process to determine if it’s eligible for warranty repair. If it’s not you can still get it fixed that way just at your cost.
Is that model reliable?
I had issues with the prior generation but we are almost to two years and I haven’t had any issues as of yet. I know others have had issues with this generation of impact driver but I have nothing to report.

I was told that milwaukee is one of the best brand in terms of reliability, that' why i purchased it. (i live in caucasus region) so now i can not decide ,does it worth of purchasing 4th generation hammer drill?!
Sorry you have had bad luck with the impact. I had an issue with the gen 3 hammer drill at the 3 year mark, with the trigger. It was replaced under warranty and that drill has worked fine ever since. The Gen 4 has worked with no issues but I just have experience with the one example of it.
its been proven time and time again that its not necessarily the tools that are powerful, its the batteries. At times thats not always good for the longevity though so like i have said before - makita knows what they are doing :)

Makita makes great tools but they don’t have the best battery technology they drug their feet on 21 700 cell batteries for their 18 V platform they don’t have stacked lithium the biggest battery they made for their 18 V platform was a 6.0. Which was outperformed by the 5.0 which is kind of dyslexic. It is a 100% balance between battery technology and engineering of the tool you cannot have one without the other And expect your tool to outperform. I like Makita I’m picking up their cordless planer this week.

I said that the more powerful batteries like Milwaukee',s high output or dewalt' s flexvolt batteries make those tools seem more powerful. makita is lacking in the battery power, but at the same time it saves their tools from overheating
Every review is showing different results 90% the gen 4 dominated idk what happend but ive run the same test and gen 4 killed it with the 2 9/16 bit so quite frankly I don't know what happend but I disagree the 40v makita has rpm but the power is not there I believe your a little biased on mikita but that's your opinion
In fairness I haven’t tried the Makita with the switch blade bit, but on everything I have tried it dominated everything else I have compared to it.
Im just not gonna say anything else have fun bud. No love found or lost.... but one more thing you need to change that partical board stack i see 👀 wht your doing. No need to respond and doing one test and not the minimum 3 to 5 to get a average you can't declare anything a win i wish you no ill intent but it just drives me crazy like the 5ah batt thing on time trials do you I will not be here to support good luck you take everything I say as an insult buddy I have way more tools than you and been doing this alot longer I also use them for work so I dont just pick up a drill run the same lame test and try to declare the best.
