Thank you so much for making these videos. My husband wants to try playing Yugioh and the last time I played was over ten years ago. These are great for a refresh!

One of my friends built me a Dark deck five years ago, which I use as my primary to this day. (I do have pre-built structure decks.) I duel with friends via my cell phone on the weekends.

yeah I got two structure decks of the water one and with help from one of shops workers built a teir 2 deck I think. I played some and it is kind of fun. but I like to work with different kind of card mechanics though.

a few weeks ago, i picked up or rather found some old gba yu-gi-oh games in a bag full of old gba games at a car boot sale, where someone was selling loads of old gamecube, playstation 1 and 2 and sega genesis/ saturn games and so on.
I have never ever played yu-gi-oh before but watched the tv show back in 2000 so i knew a little about the game.
the problem is, that since Pokemon came out, i have been following EVERY SINGLE SET from that series, and know all the rules, strategies and decks etc out there. however building a deck in yu-gi-oh seems complexing to me. 've also been refer to 1-4 star monsters as "Basic monsters" because they require nothing to play. much like the basic cards in pokemon. 5 and 6 star monsters as a "stage 1" because they require 1 monster to bring into play, and the monster has to of been in play for a whole turn, much like pokemon. 7 and 8 star monsters are "stage 2", and 9 or more are stage. funnily enough by saying stage and number after it, it coincides with the amount of tribute's required to play that card. so stage 1 require 1 summon. stage 2 require 2 summons and so.
SO here we go. a complete noob learning about yu-gi-oh... from an old gameboy advance game.
number 1: deck size can only be 40. pokemon has 60.
number 2. you can only have 3 of any given card unless stated on an official website that the card is banned and/or semi banned/limited. while pokemon has always allowed 4 of each card except for the basic energy which act as land cards for magic player reading this. only in recent years have we had pokemon cards with text printed on the card saying, "You can only have 1 of this type of card" and only in the last few months have we gotten our first ever banned outright cards in like 15 years. the last time a problem like this arose, (which was a few years ago actually) pokemon just said. "Lets have a mid season rotation. so you can only use cards from this set onwards, to get around banning this one card"
finally number 3: extra decks. these are very confusing for me, even though i watched your previous videos on using tokens and stuff. for example you say you can have badges and things. what about bits of paper, or set asside yu-gi-oh cards in sleaves with a piece of paper inside them with the written text of a token. i think yu-gi-oh is the only card game that uses an extra deck system to my knowledge, so it makes my head hurt. another example is when i use the spell card "Multiply" which lets me fill my play area with Kurboh. can i keep up to 4 Kuribo tokens in my extra deck for this.
number 4. don't know if a glitch but playing the gba game clash of cards, i was able to put 3 blues eyes white dragon cards and 3 of the alternative artwork for blue eyes white dragon cards in the same deck, as well as 3 blue eyes toon dragon. now pokemon has a ruling in its game stating that no more than a set number of cards (I.e the max amount allowed) are allowed in your deck. so for example i can have 4 pikachu from one set, but when a new pikachu comes out, i can't put it in my deck because i already have 4 cards in my deck with pikachu in it's name, unless i choose to combine them in any combination until the max is 4. the exception to this is if extra letters ect are added to cards name, like an owners name, in which case i can have 4 of the owners pikachu and 4 regular pikachu in the deck. i can get that blues eyes "Toon" dragon is its own card, since it has a different name, but if there's 2 or more different artworks for a the normal blue eyes white dragon, the game should only let me have 3 in any combination of that card.
number 5. Banned cards. through out the games you get given cards from other npc's and so on, and some are like "meh" it folder fodder. your never going to use it. however, lots of the cards compared to the real life game, either have effects or removed effects, and banned cards aren't banned at all in the games and limited cards you can play 3 off. a card i used in "clash of cards" for the longest time, before i got better ones from it's in game shop, was "Witch of the black forest" which was one of the first cards i had which required no summoning and was over 1000 attack points. i had no idea why it was on the ban list on the official website. the card just reads text about a witch, blah blah blah. in fact every card in the game tells you a bit about the monster's background, and what the fictional character does, where it came from, what it eats etc... if the card has an effect its mentioned on the second page of text in game. but I had to look up the wiki to see that the real card had an extra effect, and a broken one at that (especially if it was in the game). i just thought it was one of the worst 4 star monsters out there, because the effect is not there in the game, not even on the card text's second page, or this effect was added after a much later date (A few years after the game came out).
number 6. types. the games have a type advantage system. kind of like rock paper scissors. if a dark monster attacks a light monster in the game, the light monster is destroyed automatically regardless of whether your attack and/or defense points where lower than it. the only exception to the rock paper scissors rule, is "Divine" type which has no weaknesses and nothing is weak to it.
its stupid. I've tribute summoned an 8 star monster in the game, for the opponent to play a one or 2 star monster and attack me, and win because the one star monster beats my 8 star monsters type in the rock paper scissors match up. the only way around this is with traps and spells like "Acid trap hole" that destroys the attacking monster if it has 3000 or less attack points. also if my monster has a type disadvantage against a monster that is already in my opponents play area, and i attack into a monster i'm weak to, my monster is destroyed automatically even if my attack was higher. now i have yet to find out if this system is implemented in the real life game, because that will be really annoying. even in the pokemon cards, a charizard. a fully evolved fire type can beat a squirtle an unevolved and less powerful water type, unless it comes down to coin flips, or bad draws.
number 7. decks have a deck capacity limit. this does not mean anything to do with the 40 card limit, but rather the number of strong cards allowed in the deck. you see each card in the game or games rather, have costs. a 1 star monster for instance might be worth 16 points in your deck, and your deck's limit is 1000. all 40 cards in the deck must have a cost total that is equal to or less than the capacity limit. it sounds kind of dumb at first, but when you realise you can increase your deck capacity limit, by beating npc's, it encourages grinding, like in an RPG. say you just got a card which you really like but it costs 100 points, but your deck capacity limit is full. you have to grind on npc's enough times to the point that you have enough points to put it in, or just remove a card from your deck or several cards to make up the cost of that one card, and filling up the deck space with cards which have a low or zero deck cost, which are next to worthless on later foes. the trap card "house of adhesive"for example, which destroys any monster with 500 or less attack points for example is a zero cost card, is only good right at the start of the game, when npc's only play 1 and 2 star monsters, and becomes worthless later on, however there are many zero cost cards which can be used and can be good later on against the npc's with monsters which don't have any stars less than 4, like "the inexperienced spy" which is a spell card that lets you see your opponents hand. However Egyptian god cards like "Slifer the sky dragon" have a deck cost of zero too, which is really funny, since you can have that and have an expensive card in your deck at the same time. now where am i going with this. i want to know if outside the the video games if a deck capacity system exists. whether on an official or unofficial online website where you can play other players online, or in official tournaments. of course in tournaments they will have to have a set number, which can't be increased other wise it would be deemed unfair.
now i think thats about it. however the games don't cover card flipping effects on cards, and i havn't seen a single card that lets me shuffle or search my deck for a card. i don't expect you to answer all these questions since most of these are purely based on the video games, especially those last 2 or 3 questions. i also don't know if i would actually play the game for real, outside the video games, and if i was to think about playing i would have no clue as to what deck to build, unless it was a deck based on cards i knew off, or appeared in the original tv series with Dan Green and Eric Stewart. the games i'm playing have got me a little interested in the franchise as a whole, so it may be something i might want to look into, and would be different from playing the pokemon cards.

I was kind of hoping you would cover a deck structure balance like for example...
Number of Magic and Trap cards vs the number of Monsters in our deck. I suppose I could look this up online. However, assuming I start socializing with people who also like play YGO as well they could answer that question, too. Finding time to go to a card shop regularly can be difficult depending on where you live and how much free time you have (outside of work and stuff).

As you know the deck limit is 40minimum and 60max. Its good to keep only 40. Use 20 monsters 10 traps and 10 spells, you can bump yp the monster number if your deck haa a lot of monsters needing tribute

Coderedpirate A deck is more of less based on need, Depending on what you are playing you might require many spells, or almost no traps.
