  • Ocarinas developed independently all over the word thousand of years ago made out of widely differing materials. This time Richard Harvey shows us some instruments of his collection.

Music for the ears and the soul... Thank you Mr Richard Harvey.

Some of these instruments look like they’re going to sound just ok, like “how good could a rock with holes sound?” Then he plays it and it sounds so good I almost tear up. Incredible!
I’m dying for OT to announce a sample library with Richard Harvey, it’s been hinted at in some of the videos. How incredible to have some of these sounds available.

Oh my gosh the duet ocarina had me 😃😮 this is all SO fascinating!! I had no idea about the long history of the ocarina!
    And the Gemshorn?! WOW😍

As you say, the duet ocarina played solo is amusing. So delightful to hear the very different types of sounds, played by a master. Thank you Mr Harvey. Bingeing now on your weird and wonderful musical instruments, that I’ve never seen before. Wish music had been in my school curriculum.

I only just discovered this channel, as I am making a Gemshorn and was doing some research. Wonderful sound and especially the bass G ceramic Ocarina. Went to my soul. :)

Please we need these instruments in a deep sampled creative pack with good legato! I haven't found a single ocarina library that has good recordings and good legato so far

I have my grade 6 flute but haven’t played in 34 years, I appreciate your videos the vibrato you produce from these simple instruments is absolutely amazing, your playing reminds me of my old music tutor who played flute, oboe, clarinet, piccolo recorders all of them from soprano to bass , tin whistle which he called a Penny whistle, and he had ocarinas on top of his upright piano, oh he accompanied me on piano which he also made sound beautiful, it’s not often I have heard a musician who can control his or her breathing and air flow as beautifully as you. Do you give lessons?
I have an old flute and I’m going to get it from the back of my wardrobe , thank you for being so inspirational. I have only watched this and your tabor pipe video but I’m guessing you play flute professionally? Looking forward to watching some more of your utube content,

I just want to tell you that spaghetti coming from China is inaccurate. When Marco polo wrote about the noodles that the Chinese had, he said that they eat Spaghetti and vermicelli. He wouldn't have had names for them if they didn't already exist in Italy.

Are the holes rather large on the gemshorn? I bought an ocarina and some bamboo flutes with holes to big for my fingers.

Maybe make a cone shape with epoxy resin, by wrapping a circle around a cone like a waffle cone?

I do wish they wouldn't put reverb and compression on these recordings. I'd much rather hear how the instruments sound in the room as near as possible.

you should say you are adding reverb to the sound of the playing in this video, people whodont know ocarinas will think thats how it actually sounds xD

Absolutely love your videos, but you tease with the shawm here and a krumhorn elsewhere-let’s hear those, along with any cornamusen, sordunes, kortholts, and dulcians you might be hiding!

Sorry, but you're wrong there. That was a cow horn and both bovine / ovine genders have horns, unless they are are a 'Poll' breed. Most antelope are the same and it's the Deer family where the male has 'antlers' and the females have no antlers.
