    Graham - when the decision was taken to disassemble the original layout I was sorry to see it go and a bit concerned if the new layout would be as good. But the level of detail and sophistication that you are putting into the new layout is beyond anything I had expected or hoped for. Very well done indeed.

      Phillip Clift Thank you very much for that kind comment Philip, I guess these things I am doing now is what I should have done the first time round but I really didn’t have the knowledge or experience at that stage - 6 years on then I have learnt a lot, mainly from watching others and going to exhibitions, standing in awe at the level of modelling which was in front of me. So now I am trying to put some of that knowledge I have gained over the years into this layout. I have so many ideas in my head to put down into this layout but of course it all takes time but I’m hoping that as time goes on then many more details will be added - I don’t just want trains running round, I want it to be interesting to look at too. Cheers for now. ............. Graham

    that is over and beyond what most of us will do on a model layout. I am so impressed. you always seem to surprise me for the amount you think out side the box. to go for that extra amount of realism, and animation.

      sparky107107 Hi David and thank you sir for those kind words, I find it a lot of fun just trying to do something that gives the layout a bit more interest, some things might not work 100% first time round like the lift but I have no doubt that I can can get it to work better than what it does at the moment. There is so much potential in the platform area the high street scene to do some great detailing. Glad you enjoyed it so far mate. 👍🏻. Cheers for now buddy. ............. Graham

      Lee Whall I had this thought in my head from day one of the idea of the lift - if I was going to have a lift then it had to be a working lift and so before cutting anything or certainly buying anything then I made several cardboard mock ups just to test it out first so I now have a pretty good idea what the next stage should be, I can go up into the train room tomorrow and start work on it straight away without any head scratching. This is the difference between this layout and my previous layout - I stop and think first which I didn’t do before and ended up in all sorts of mess sometimes. @2H80vids Před 4 lety

    It's an ambitious project Graham and, so far anyway, it's coming together really, really well. Leaving the lift-shaft aside for the moment, the station building is spectacular. It looks like an off-the-shelf model because of the build quality but it's SO unique, it just has to be scratchbuilt. It's a very unusual design, which makes it special, and it suits the other infrastructure at the station. Same style as the signalbox(ish) and continuing the stone from the retaining walls was genius. The road frontage looks great too, maybe a wee bit London Transport inspired, the curved ends set it off beautifully.
    If your lift works, that's probably going to be unique, or very nearly, and should look amazing. One thing I thought of: might it be worth trying to automate it? You're going to forget to work the two motors and they will all miss their trains.
    Can the porter get that barrow through the gap from the street? It looks quite narrow in the stills. As you continue to add fiddly bits and electronics, I keep thinking how good the layout will look at night-time, with everything lit.
    Good luck with the lift, can't wait for Part II.
    All the Best,
    Dougie.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      2H80vids Hi Dougie, as Robs Trains has mentioned, the station building itself is made by Bachmann and not scratch built by me but everything else is built by me. One of the things that swayed me was the fact that I already have the Art Deco signal box already sitting on the platform and matches in very well for style and the period too. There will always be questions asked about if this or that would actually work in real life (especially on my layout apparently) and possibly no, it wouldn’t work but when creating a model then compromises have to be made but I have tried to make it as realistic as possible to my modelling abilities. I even had one person saying that there was a chance of people falling down the lift shaft because there was no door at the top at the moment!! You just can’t legislate for that kind of comment. While this layout is being built then there will of course be areas that in real life would not work and so folk will need to be patient and wait until it’s finished. Cheers for now mate. ............ Graham

      @@GrahamFoulston OOOOPS, my bad !! I'm quite out-of-date with what's available off-the-shelf nowadays and didn't realise Bachmann made such an unusual building. Have you modified it much? The way it ties-in to the retaining walls is an important part of its realism - are the retaining walls Bachmann too? I thought I had heard you say they were from card kits.
      I suppose it shows what I think of your modelling skills, when I thought the station was a scratch build.☺

  • @peterells1720
    @peterells1720 Před 4 lety

    Dear Graham,
    Here is a suggested mechanism for your lift doors using your existing point-motors:
    1) Fix a bracket to the underside of the platform, adjacent to the lift.
    2) Fix two narrow metal tubes to the bracket. They should be horizontal, and a vertical distance of about 3 cm apart.
    3) Two very small rods pass freely through these tubes.
    4) Solder a stiff wire vertically to one end of these rods. The top of this wire passes though the platform and forms the moving edge of the lift door. The above setup constrains this edge to move horizontally and remain vertical.
    5) Take a 30 cm length of piano wire. Solder one end of it to the stiff wire at the point midway between the rods. It should be horizontal and parallel to the rods.
    6) Solder the other end of the piano wire to the lever-arm on your point-motor, (which will be mounted about 30 cm from the lift). The position on the lever-arm should be such that the arc moved through by this rigid joining point is equal to the width of the lift door.
    7) The flexibility and length of the piano wire should ensure that the wagging of the point-motor lever-arm has no significant effect on the uniform movement of the lift door.
    Best wishes,
    Peter

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Peter Ells Hi Peter and thank you for the comment. That is pretty much how I had already designed the movement for the door albeit slightly different in a couple of ways but yes, it’s important that the system operates in a horizontal movement guided in some form by rods in tubes. I know what I want to do - I just need to find the time to do it as well as installing my new mechanism for the lift so we shall see how it goes. Cheers for now. ............Graham

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      trainmanbob Hi Bob, I’m still thinking about the doors at the top, if I do fit doors then they will be manually operated but really I want them to be open at some stage so I can see through them for photography purposes. I have to be realistic in my abilities and how far I want to go with a project like this, just getting the lift to work and the door working is a big ask for me so I think I will settle for just manual doors at the top. • @gartsherriejunction4643

    Hi Graham. Glad to see that you have your mojo back, but boy, you didn't half test yourself with this one. I hope your idea works and it makes my own suggestion obsolete. I have been watching other CZcams videos and many of them use the concept of using servos to open doors of varying designs. If interested check out Luke Towan (Build, Paint & Animate a Working Freight House), Geoff Bunza (Servo Doors) or MarklinofSweden (Building, Painting & Weathering the Roundhouse). All 3 use the concept of servo doors and, in the event you feel this is another option, then they might be worth looking at, I certainly found them of interest. Take care and good luck. Mike

      Gartsherrie Junction Hi Mike, my first thought was to use servos to operate both the lift and the doors (I even went onto the Megapoints website and made a list of what I needed) but then I remembered that I had a load of point motors left over and as one of my main points on this layout was to re-use as much as I can from the previous layout then I thought that I would give these a go first, if I really can’t can’t get anywhere with them then I will resort in buying some servos and use them instead. Hi Graham, may I ask if you use an interface between your Z21 and devices. As you may perceive I’m a noobie, with a Z21 controller. You have probably videoed this before, a pointer would be appreciated.

    Hi Graham, very well done! It will be great seeing the lift in actual use. Tell me, is it an optical illusion at 2:18 with the station entrance and the bus? It appears as if the bus is hitting the beams of the roof line. The whole station entrance scene is so lifelike!
    I have a Metcalfe overbridge and want to put elevator shafts on it. You have given me something to work with now for the design. I don't know whether I will have them working or not, just yet. I said "shafts", meaning I will have to put them at each side of the bridge.
    Once again well done. ....... Ian

      Hawthorn Valley Hi Ian, yes, it is an optical illusion, the bus does clear the roof (just!). I love this building, it fits into my layout so well. Ok, it’s probably not to everyone’s taste but I like it and that’s all what matters. Good idea to fit the lift shafts either side of the bridge, a lot of modern stations have these now, even our local station at St. Neots has them. Cheers for now mate. ........... Graham
