    Looking brilliant G. I think sometimes people can get a bit too hung up over realism. At the end of the day your layout looks the business and more importantly ticks all the boxes for you. Loads of interest and enjoyment there in future shunting! 👍

    Your layout just keeps getting better Graham. Reference your comment “I don’t want you getting bored” when you were running the loco faster than you normally would,believe me Graham watching your locos moving around your layout is NEVER boring so please dont feel you have to run any locos faster than you would like to for our benefit as I’m sure all would agree we would love to see them running at the speeds you deem appropriate for the track they are navigating at the time! Great update my friend. Regards Jim

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Jim Houghton Many thanks Jim, I was just becoming conscious of the length of the video and I didn’t really want folk skipping on the fast forward button, I can show the locos going at a more realistic speed on a running session in the yard at a later date when it’s a little more complete. This was really to do with showing the process of the yard at this stage but I do take your point though and I thank you for that. Cheers for now mate. ...........Graham

    M went to work to get ready for a big meeting Monday morning. That opening scene was superb. You could have wagons dumping coal in a big pike there by your face digger and it could be digging into the face of the coal pile to place it into the transfer pile. Putting the whole yard entrance on a siding is great. The diesels could even come out in one direction and the driver could change ends and leave in another without being on the mainline. Now that I see the big overall plan and understand it I can see it works perfectly and will be fun to operate. Rob

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Rob McCrain Thank you my friend and yes, I can make a nice little cameo scene from that one area alone, there is so much that can be going on. You’re right, you need to see the complete scene to understand fully how it could work - there is a lot of pretending and imagination needed but I like that, a little story line each time I use it. 👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now buddy. ..........Graham

    It may not be prototypical but so what - you've got your steam shed, TMD and container station and that's what you wanted. And with the fine standard of modelling you achieve it will all look absolutely great! I especially like the street scene behind the main station; that really adds to the ambience. Congratulations - wish I could have your skills.

    It looking really good. It's just a little crowded but you have to do with the space you're given and if you're having fun it doesn't matter if the trains are parked on top of the buildings and upside down for that matter. That ash pit you built is very nice. I enjoyed the video. Always looking forward to the next. 👍

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      William Bryant I think William that it may not look quite so crowded once some of those containers are on the track and not in the yard plus a few of those items on the layout may not remain on there but we shall see. But you’re right, we do have to make the best of what we have as regards space though. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed the video, that’s the main thing. Cheers for now mate. ............. Graham

    Hello Graham, yes, I agree, every railway needs a history. Also a interesting back story. You have created yours. You have brought to fruition your steamers/containers/ TMD addition to your layout. I look forward to further episodes as you finish your track work, lay in hardscape, scenery, etc. see ya next time.

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Norman Rowe Many thanks Norman and the history goes back about 5 years ago, I really wanted that to give me a foundation to build on and it’s still current today as that foundation is what the new layout is built on. Hopefully now that I have this part of the layout constructed I can start finalising the details and start adding Scenics where appropriate. Cheers for now buddy. ............Graham

    @TRAMJUNCTION7147HG Před 4 lety +2

    Brilliant Graham. I think your choice of entry into the yard was the best option and the curved point from the main line, looks and fits in well. Good idea for the crane tracks by spliting a section of rail in half. Maybe those bogies I have sent to you can provide the wheels for it, as they are smaller than normal bogie wheels. You still have a lot of work to do yet, but I'm sure you are enjoying it all. So far, everything has all come together very well. So have a break tomorrow, sit down with a nice cup of coffee or a whisky and a few ciggies and have a little play with your container trains.
    Catch you again soon. Cheers for now buddy......................Geoff

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      TRAM JUNCTION Thank you very much Geoff, the entry took a little while to sort out but got there in the end after crossing off the other options for the reasons explained and it works fine. I do have a set of bogies that will do the job for the crane but I will wait until I receive yours before I make my mind up which ones to go for. Yes, I’m looking forward to a couple of hours of just playing trains with a coffee and a few smokes but it will probably be Monday as we are out tomorrow but that’s OK, I can wait! 👍🏻. @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Medway Peninsula Model Railway Many thanks Kev and it was really important for me to bring back the steam engine shed/turntable etc as it’s somewhere to keep some steamers without it looking odd on the layout. Because the layout is now primarily a modern image layout then I am treating this as a heritage area run by enthusiasts so this is not complete yet but the basics are there. I’m really looking forward to developing this area. Cheers for now mate. .......... Graham

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      Mark Crocker Absolutely Mark, I cant - like everyone else - magic up space that I haven’t got so I (we) have to make the best of what I have which hopefully I have done on this section of the layout, some may think it’s a little cramped but let’s see how it turns out in a months time once I am further forward. You hit the nail on the head as you were looking at each element separately which is the way I had designed it but all those elements had to work together as well which I think they will once I’m a little further on. Many thanks Mick, the board works well although i am going to try 3mm instead of the 5mm which i used at the moment, it was just laid as an experiment to see how it went but i think i would like it a tad lower than what it is so to enable me to clean the track easier. It is flush with the rail at the moment which will make cleaning the track a bit difficult - I will see how the 3mm works out. Cheers for now mate. ............Graham

    Looks brilliant Graham. As ever I am amazed at the speed of your decision making and layout execution. Of course it has taken years of thinking and experience to produce such a level of skill, and the grasp of the tools you are working with. It must also be great to be able to up(re?)cycle older models back into service, and keep them up to scratch. The extension to your layout is going to throw up several interesting forms of landscaping too.
    One thought - and only because I would love to see you solve the problem, and make the model - how about keeping the container truck return route along-side the gantry, but then send the trucks over the two container storage tracks using a steel roadway (such as you see at ferry terminals), and then meeting up with the down ramp into the yard. I am sure you will make whichever route you choose look, and work, brilliantly, but I thought I'd give it a try too.
    Cheers Graham, 2020 is already looking like a vintage year at Lakeside.

As regards the rout for the lorries then I’m still undecided on the route I want to take, I need to sit on my chair and just sort that out the best way I can but thanks for the input, it’s another I can consider. When I took the previous layout down I kept virtually everything, even some of the Scenics because I wanted them to go back onto this layout so as to keep the the same ‘feel’ even though the layout as a whole would be different - hope that makes sense. Coming on very nicely Graham, but I suspect after you have finished the FL Depot you will be considering adding point motors to some of the points. There is a possibly that when you reach over to switch the points a part of your clothing may catch a piece of the scenery and when you start shunting it can become a nuisance having to get up from your chair and start moving from one end t'other end of the layout to switch over a point or two.

    Hello mate, loving the new scenes and the return of parts of the old Lakeside - you've managed to make it look very busy and alive without cluttering the scene and it looks grand! All very well thought out and will look even better when the next layers of scenery go on top, the mix of modern traction and a steam shed seems reminiscent of 'steamtown' at Carnforth...there's definitely something to be said about hand operated points, not as realistic for some but does add a layer of entertainment to manually switch them when shunting I think?
    Regards,
    Alex

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      Alex Pomeroy Hi Alex and thank you for the kind comment. All the items you see at the moment are really just there to see what room I have, if I decide that parts look a bit cluttered then I will thin them out or try to reposition them, this is especially so in the TMD area, I need to still do work on that. It made perfect sense to me to have these points manually operated keeping the brief of this layout true to its meaning - simple and easy to use. Every single point is very easy to access so no reason to have point motors and all the wiring associated with them especially as this part of the layout will be able to be folded down. Cheers for now mate. ............. Graham

    ¡Hola Graham! Redevelopment of the area is looking great. The landlord at The Manor House must be very pleased with his expansion plans for the town! As for your insight to the layout and your obvious attention to detail - it’s a credit and inspiration to any of us who are currently into new builds. Talking of which, my own layout is to include a small TMD and, to this end, I was wondering if you had, in your video archives, any building sessions which included the use of the foam board (at position 5:50 in the video) I had thought about using filler but, your yard concrete looks great with the materials used.
    Finally, (at position 19:00) you mentioned “realistic”. I am so pleased you mentioned that it was you who was happy with the realism. That was a huge finger poke at the so-called rivet counters of this world and I hope other modellers realise that as long as they enjoy their layout designs, that’s all that matters! Rule #1 - it’s mine and, that’s how it is.
    Looking forward to seeing you complete the planned construction Graham.
    Cheers, Gary

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      A Train In Spain Hi Gary and thank you for that kind comment. Having Rule 1 at the forefront when building a layout is very important as you can be swayed from one point to another and because of the many different suggestions then you can end up in a complete mess with no focus on what YOU want, no matter how unrealistic it may be. I have learnt that lesson. Having learnt that lesson then I believe that is why this new layout is a joy to build, I do of course take suggestions on board and sometimes they are included but only if I think they will fit into the layout to give me what I want.
      I haven’t any videos of working with foam board but I will see if I can show how I create the hard standing in the next video which I hope will help. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

    One suggestion, instead of the Ramp coming of the Bridge for Your Container Lorries, why not put the Ramp back the way You had it, coming straight down into the illage. Then the Lorries would have to go through the Village to the end, come around the backside and the a Viaduct underneath the Ramp into the Yard??

    Hi Graham, Great job on the layout of the new extension, it all works very well. I hadn't realised you were making the new bit fold down, is that just so that you can work on the highstreet scene easier at a later date? Nice to see a Kelmar Container Stacker appear, and in Malcolm colours, as seen at Daventry International Railfreight Terminal. You mentioned the turning area for lorries at the end, in fact the lorries could reverse down from there along the front to collect/drop off their containers. Your not allowed to drive under a hanging container for obvious reasons, it could drop on your head. One other thing, you mentioned not wanting to split the trains in the yard to allow the lorries to exit the yard, that's actually done quite alot at Daventry if a long train is in the yard in order to allow vehicles to drive round unhindered still. Anyway, another great video as always. Look forward to the next progress update. Best regards Dave.

      All very interesting and informative comments there Dave, thank you. As you know, I’m not a train person and have in actual fact never seen anything Freightliner in real life - ever!! So my knowledge is extremely limited and these comment are really helpful to me. Thank you. The new extension folds down so that I can carry on modelling the rear section without me having to stretch plus it also gives me easy access to release the roadway at the back should I get any derailments in the hidden storage. As time goes on and I finish the modelling at the rear of the layout then I doubt if this new section will be lowered that often but I want it like that just in case I need access, might as well think of it at this stage rather than wishing I had done it at a later stage - lessons learnt!! 👍🏻👍🏻. @@GrahamFoulston Hi Graham, your reasons for having the container terminal hinged are very sound, how many times have we thought, I won't do that again, and then do, so lessons learned and now put into practice. My experience of real container terminal working is purely limited to driving trucks at work to the terminal to load and unload containers for the green and white supermarket Bachmann did those nice containers of a while back..............I ought to mention Malcolms run Daventry and we use their containers too, infact those green/white ones are actually their's. I think EWS and DRS operate the trains from Daventry, not sure if I have seen Railfreight in there or not. One interesting fact I learnt recently was that there are two different height containers we use, Malcolms have to load them with all the taller containers at the back of the train incase of the WCML being blocked. The alternative route can't take the higher containers so if that happens they split the train and only take the lower containers onward to Scotland. Best regards Dave.

      stretchedits Funny you should say about the different heights on the containers as I noticed that on some of the model containers too, I just thought that it was a scale thing but obviously not. Another very informative comment which is really useful for me so once again, thank you, things are starting to make sense now! 👍🏻👍🏻

    Graham just build it the way you want it. It is your layout. It is a shame that the container crane does not go up or down. (The early Hornby one did). But I am sure you have just as much fun from it. Martin (Dhaka, Bangladesh.)

      Martin Pattison Don’t worry Martin, I will build this layout the way I want to so no problems there. 👍🏻. I’m not bothered at all about the crane not working, it was always going to be just a static crane although I will be able to move it up and down on its rails which is all I want and will still have much fun using it in that respect. @@GrahamFoulston Hi mate it's great to see the enthusiasm you have especially at this time year as it's so easy to get fed up with things what with the weather and short days.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      Mark Franks Thanks Mark and without blowing my own trumpet, this is why I spent some time sorting the train room out and installing the air con, I wanted this room to be an all weather room so I could go up there no matter what is happening outside, be it freezing cold or extreme heat then it’s a constant temperature of 17 degrees, perfect for working in and also just sitting playing trains. That was really important to me having had the opposite and all that entails on the previous layout. It really makes such a huge difference to the enjoyment and also keeps the layout and stock in great condition too. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

    Just one thought on the lorries exiting. What about cratering a false underpass entrance just ahead of the one facing down toward the TMD. The lorry could drop down underground and off to wherever you deem appropriate?

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Silky Jack I have so much left to do on this yard still that I can’t really make that decision until I know exactly where things are going to be placed which I am working on at the moment along with of course the best route for the trucks to take but an underpass wasn’t something I had thought about but is something I can put into the melting pot, hopefully I will have this sorted by the end of the week. The thing I like with you Graham, is you do things your way (still taking onboard viewer's comments). The yard is looking excellent and I can't believe how much work you have done. Its a real tricky one with the lorry turn around point. Its hard to explain in words, but here goes... right so you want lorrys getting to the nearside of crane, so could they cross the tracks in front of the crane like you said, but once crossed they could continue slightly to the right into a deadend that they would then have traffic marshals to assist them in reversing down to the nearside of the crane. Once finished they could then drive straight forward and go out the way they came in? What do you reckon? All the best mate and great video as always. Cheers, Lee

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety +1

      Lee Whall You are so right with your comment Lee and I thank you for that. It’s so important to end up with what I want from this layout with my ideas and thoughts while also taking on board suggestions from folk who know a lot more than I do in both model railways and real railways, but at the end of the day it’s me that needs to model it and also more importantly - to live with it. The main problem I get is although suggestions may seem correct from the folk who suggest something, they are not in the room with me and so can’t see what I can see - cross members under the baseboards in the way, filming opportunities lost from a certain angle etc. Hopefully you can see what I mean. So I have to weigh all these things up before committing anything I do - weathering my idea or someone else’s.
      I have been playing with the route of the lorries this morning and you are not too far off what I’m erring to at the moment but I’m still undecided, I don’t want to do this job twice so I need to be 100% sure before committing to the final route so I will still go back and have a further ‘play’ maybe this afternoon, hopefully I can make a final decision by the end of the day. 👍🏻👍🏻. Cheers for now buddy and once again, thank you for the kind comment, it’s greatly appreciated sir. ............. Graham

    Graham, you have been busy! The yard certainly sets things off very nicely. Can't wait to see it finished. The Manor house looks great as well in that position.
    Did you receive my email of 2/1/2020?
    2020 already! Doesn't seem all that long ago that long ago I started Hawthorn Valley, but it is nearly 5 years! As I have not run trains for about 8 or 9 months, as I have been tweaking parts of the layout, I keep getting asked by SWKB when are we going to some trains running! It will happen!
    All the best. .... Ian.
    PS. Do you still have the video of the origins of the Manor House. It might be time to repeat it as a special video!

    Taking shape nicely Graham. I’m glad you liked my idea of it being an old marshalling yard. The length of track with the fuel tanker on , is that to be joined to the other track with a point ? Keep it coming, so good to watch the layout grow and develop. Clive.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Clive briggs To be honest Clive that given the history then the old marshalling yard couldn’t have been used for a better job than the new container yard. The owners of the Manor House are very astute business people! 😉. Yes, the track will be joined with a point for the fuelling yard but I haven’t put that in yet until I’m 100% sure that is the final position, once I have decided where it’s definitely going to go then I can finish of the track work. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham

      Duncan Campbell Thank you very much Duncan and pleased that you like it so far. I will spend a few more hours deciding where things are to finally rest, they may stay where they are or move a little, all I wanted at this stage was to have them on the layout so I knew how much room they took up and what I had left. I don’t want things to look cramped though so it might mean I will just not use some of them. I think the engine shed area is pretty much there, it’s the TMD area I need to work on and get sorted out which I can do in the coming week. Cheers for now buddy. ............ Graham

    Just one question have you ever tried using Anyrail or similar pograms to plan your track work? Probably a bit late now I know, but definitely worth it's weight when it comes to planning what you can do with a particular space.

    • @GrahamFoulston
      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      Corunna Railway Line Hi, yes I did use a computer programme (I can’t remember which one now) in the early days of the previous Lakeside but I found that although it was ok for basic planning of a layout, there was nothing like seeing it for real on the layout. It might look good on screen but I found in practice that it didn’t always work out as it should, I much prefer these days to lay it out roughly using real track but like everything, you have to use whatever method you are more comfortable with. Cheers for now mate. ........... Graham

      @GrahamFoulston  Před 4 lety

      turnout999 Hi Geoff, on the area you saw then I used 5mm foam board but I’m going to try 3mm too, I shall do that off site though just in. Case it doesn’t work. At the moment it’s absolutely flush with the top of the track and I would prefer it a fraction lower as it will make cleaning the track a lot easier. Cheers for now mate. ..........Graham
