One of my favorite things in WoW are the little secrets you can find in the mountains between zones. They almost tell a story and make you wonder, "What happened here?"

This is why Cataclysm was my favourite expansion. I spent so much time in Vanilla WoW exploring the map and looking for secrets, I even got into Caverns of Time before it was released and explored that area or got under/behind Stormwind and explored the vast wastelands behind it.
I was fascinated with all the hints and unreachable areas that Vanilla WoW had to offer and when Cataclysm actually finished the entire map and allowed us to fly and explore it, it allowed me to satisfy that curiosity I had felt all those years ago. Little things like the mushroom fairy ring in Tirisfal Glades were my reward for exploring the map.

Hope you enjoy! The broad goal here was to give an overall view of how this aspect of the game has changed over the years - perhaps there might be time in the future to do a deep dive on the really cool ones (like ashbringer) and go through the story of how it all went down - who started the rumours, who the key players were, that kinda thing.

I remember there once was a rare mob deep in the sea near Arathi Hightlands, which dropped a trinket that gave you certain chance of stunning the enemy. Back then there were very few good trinkets, and cc reduction wasn't introduced yet. So in spite of being a low level trinket, it was considered to be quite powerful in pvp. It was already pretty late when I heard about it, but when I swam there to have a look, I still found someone camping there.

The mystery and Atmosphere of Vanilla WoW will never be seen again soley due to the nature and evolution of the internet.
Remember that WoW was born in the very early phases of DOMESTIC IE in your home internet access. Nor everyone could afford it or cared and as such the internet was not nearly as populated or expansive as we experience it today. This environment greatly contributed to the WoW experience and the nature of MMOs on the whole.
That era can only happen once and as such we will never see anything quite like Vannila Wow ever again.

I loved the Lucid Nightmare so much. I'm a puzzle fanatic and have done some very challenging improvised technical tablet weaving to make woven bands with pixel art or letters on them this past year, and that weaving is the only thing that comes close to making and following my endless halls map in terms of true cognitive challenge. It was a gratifying and engrossing few hours, and I desperately hope that similarly brilliant puzzles are in our future.

I ended up spending 3 days in the endless halls. One of my add-ons, the one I was using to keep track of the path that I had taken, kept on making the game crash, and progress didn't save between crashes. By the time I figured out what was happening, 3 days of IRL time had passed. Thankfully, the mount is actually pretty nice, and I don't feel as if that time was wasted.

    @hordenews1750 Před 7 lety +2

Lucid Nightmare :: Endless Halls:: plenty of guides on it now, but throwing in my tips for it you may have heard some before will make you life a lot easier and faster for the halls riddle are: 1st of all what you must do: click on a color torch and then click on the table that has the same color. then you must do it for the 4 remaining colors. Tips are: DO IT WITH A DEMON HUNTER! the double run forward ability makes it a hell of a lot faster. Also any items you can bring/do to make your toon move faster, Slap speed increase Enchant on low level boots or to your cloak. Other items that you might have available still being (nifty stopwatch or Impending Doom trinket), Also a lot of speed potions. :::Now that you have all your speed increase crap next is to make your own map on with a pencil and paper as you are running through it. You can not just do squares for each room because there will be stairs going up and down and the rooms on the different levels will overlap each-other. So the best way to map it really is every time you go up or down a stairs draw the new floor as a different map!!! then my last tip is have a friend do the mapping with pen and paper, while you just constantly run your character through it. saves time from stopping in every room just to draw a square with exits. and always remember which way is North! With all these tips you will prob be able to get the halls done in about 1-2 hours max. good Luck.

Remember the Dancing Troll village? Between Felwood and Ashenvale. Now the elves have found and slaughter them through a cave. But you used to have to slow fall to even get there, after hopping up onto a shelf in winterspring, and running around the edge of the zone. Such a tranquil spot, just a bunch of trolls in a village around a lake, having a dance party.

Eranikus was dealt with. There was a quest that took you to Moonglade, where you talked to another green dragon (Ysera or perhaps Eranikus's consort?) and you summon Eranikus and fight him again, while the Druids purified him. You eventually defeat him and he is restored.

I just want to add to something Bellular said in this video. Databases like Thottbot did exist in vanilla, but didn't have nearly as much information as today. Players would use the comment sections to ask and answer questions. Since the in-game map didn't show much, they even went as far as posting geographical coordinates to help other players find specific things.

I did both, too. I thought I was so smart with my pencil and pen for marking which doors were open and which weren't, until the open/closed doors started switching up on me. xD "Wait, room 5's north door was closed 10 minutes ago, I SWEAR it was!" Had to verify that the doors occasionally changed by talking to my guild. And that's when I used the addon and the paper together... still took like 3 straight hours. All the same, what a great quest! And everyone who's done it can commiserate about it, it's a little bonding thing that we share even when we just see each other on the mount in passing. An unspoken message of: "the endless halls were awful, right? Congrats on getting through it!" Also it's a sick mount to go with the purple versions of Thal'kiel + the Voidwalker demon on Warlocks, I use it on mine all the time now. :D

You convinced me to give the next expansion a shot.
I started playing right before WoD, I don't really have a schedule that would allow me to play with a group of others for things like raiding. Besides, I am not the biggest fan of WoW's (understandably) old school gameplay. I enjoy the lore and the story a lot, but the subscription system punishes me for taking my time. Overall, I didn't understand the appeal of wow.
I played in a vanilla server for a couple of days, then everything clicked. Without having things outlined on a map, I had to actually pay attention to everything around me and explore, increasing the immersion. Quest text was no longer something I had to download an add-on to make interesting. The challenge was much greater, which encouraged a more slow and thought out approach, making every fight more interesting. On top of all that, the lack of hand-holding by the game encouraged player interactions when tackling quests. I remember rushing in as a warrior to save a player who accidentally aggroed two mobs. They thanked me! It felt so nice...
Times have changed, and I'm in a position where I might be able to set up a subscription. Hearing such fun things that can be done in modern WoW, makes me really want to play again. Seeing how the next expansion might go back to the Alliance vs Horde dynamic and hopefully stay away from the "You are literally Jesus!" style of storytelling, I am really willing to give it a shot.

Behind the uninstanced version of Zul Gurub there was a path, reachable via the wall climbing in the Blasted Lands, leading to a cave that urban legend said would spawn an npc once a month, on a blue moon, at 3.00am during a Leap Year ... take your pick, and he would sell you a rare tiger mount that was actually in the game files, just not in game. I fell for it and kept an alt there for ages, logging in every now and then hoping the vendor would spawn. Or Zalashji's Den, it was rumoured that if you interacted with him in some mysterious way then something would happen. I tried all sorts of crazy stuff to get that to happen. Would really love to know why he was placed there, a quest that was never implemented maybe.

also lies. There was enough quest xp to hit 60 before you even left the level 48-ish zones.
And that was before they added a bunch of new world quests to the mid 40's and late 50's in 1.8.
the catch was doing all of the zones in order of level, not focusing on one region and following it's questlines till the late 20's.
that's why they start throwing bread crumbs to visit and quest in other regions every 5 levels, because they intended for you go and see the world, not focus on one region.

I spent just under 2 hours in Endless halls yolo style. After a hour I had the map more or less memorized in mind and then it was just looking for what was what, the last half hour was a portal that teleported me, had to figure that out, took a while when I did I got my last Blue sigil. Win.

The Corrupted ASHBRINGER was available through old Naxx and a long questline .in order to purifiy it you had to run around in a RAID group receiving RAID WIDE DAMAGE and do several things to purify it. IT WAS ONLY DONE ONCE. The person who did it had the option of equipping a special title or a toy version (It think it was) before it was removed from the game for being too OP and too hard to do. The Corrupted Ashbringer was only available in Vanilla WoW for a short time.

Great video, but i kinda missed the Gammon one, like... the urban legend that you can drop legendary weapons from him (obviously just a myth). (lv12 horde neutral/alliance hostile tauren npc in Orgrimmar) and stuff like that. But overall good video, enjoyed watching it.

The think i miss most in wow is not having a world to explore. The 6-7 small maps model implemented back in BC (wich persists up to today), made wow smaller and focused on min-max stuff. Back there, you'd only worry about that if you're in a top guild, and now it's what everyone do (stack X attribute for spec Y).
I still have my screenshot at Hyjal in front the board saying "blizzard, under construction".. good days.

When I finally got the time-lost proto drake after 4 weeks of camping I didn't use another flying mount for years. It was brutal and I actually got lucky. There were 3-4 people hunting for the thing at all times of the day. Getting their congrats after four weeks felt like leaving a small community in its own. We will never get back those kind of stories in WoW. People just aren't willing to sacrifice any time for big pay offs anymore. The WoD Gronns don't even compare.

Just recently on my engineer I learned they incorporated one of the oldest urban legends in the game into the questline towards the end. The workshop looks exactly the same, albeit thankfully the cataclysm pushed it a bit closer so we didn't need to glitch our way there. :P

7:24 I started wow in the beginning of WoD and I did that because I was messing around and didn't know anything about anything and was just exploring on my free level 90 (I didn't even get to level 100 until the end of WoD lol).. I tried to ask people what it was and told them I jumped into the big swirly in the middle of the map of azeroth but nobody in my guild/friends knew what I was talking about and I still didn't know what it was until I just watched this video.
