3D Crosswalk is Helping Slow Down Traffic

- In Ísafjörður, a small town in the northwest of Iceland, a local environmental officer, inspired by similar attempts in New Delhi, suggested the idea of painting a three-dimensional crosswalk.
The crosswalk, painted by road marking company Vegamálun GÍH, creates an optical illusion which is causing drivers to think that the zebra lines are objects such as boxes lying on the street. The innovative effort is treated as an experiment to test if a 3D zebra crossing can be an effective alternative to speed bumps. It is still too early to judge if the experiment will be a success though.

Yeah that really worked.....
The speed of the vehicle @ 54 seconds!
Andrew Condie beat me too it lol
Lol you would think they would edit that out if they are trying to promote it lmao.
The driver was texting.
UnicornSlime 882 Then why would they show it in time lapse if that just makes it look like it’s not doing its job of slowing cars down? Goofy decision IMO.
@Erin Marie no the reason it looked like it was going fast is because it was. Look at how the car breaks at the next normal crosswalk. Car didn't even try to stop at the first one.
Interesting idea. I can see some of the pedestrians wanting to cross by only jumping on the white lines for fun. Giving some entertainment to the people in their cars while they wait.
That Land Rover at 00:54 didn't seem to slow down too much.
A good clean way to keep pedestrians safe and drivers on their toes. Nice thinking!
I was in Iceland for just a few days - I fell in Love with Iceland and the Icelandic people.
0:54 It almost hit the bicycle 😕
No.. video was edited to work fast..
Wait until a motocross driver jumps his bike over it.
Imagine drunk driving + seeing this
Why would you be drunk and driving first of all?
@@mgcinimhlanga3140 it’s Iceland.
@@will_mcdermott so?
@@mgcinimhlanga3140 everyone’s always drunk there kid. No need to make an argument out of every single sentence you look at.
@@will_mcdermott kid? Didn't know asking questions meant you were a kid? Btw I think you're talking about Ireland
Amazingly smart. You would have to try hard not to brake.
Do you have a temple for me to do on my street?
That’s trippy
It's ok for OneWay roads, as from the other side it wont have the 3D effect.
They could paint the other side too.
The floor is lava.
Being done in Thailand too
Sump-cracker speed bumps work
@1:13 a car speeds thru
Well, that looks fast but no thats probably a slow 50mph for a car but if thats fast to you then okay
For a human thats EXTREME for a cheetah thats Meehhhh but for a car thats like bbbBBBBB *BBBBÒOOOOOIIIII*
1:00 apparently Iceland doesnt teach their kids to ride NOT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD. Like that helmet is gonna do him any good when hit head-on.
lol? kids riding in the middle of the street on safe slow under 35km speed shared streets is common just about everywhere from what I've seen, just some places barely seem to have those type of streets....
It only looks like that from the center of the roadway. You don’t drive on the center...
It only looks 3d from that angle. It needs to look 3d from further away
it wont work at night cause of shadows
ع أعصابي 😅بس واو فن
How is it 3D
Narrow crosswalk
Needs to be broader
Lol
This is an awesomely amazing and effective project for everyone and every country.
Has my vote and those of you who "can't get over yourself" and your rediculous fast, snazzy car's, then don't drive around these areas. Knowone wants you too, if you're that much of a danger to society, who would rather run people over for your better interests of pride.
If you are that much of an incompetent driver and cannot slow down and take care then you don't deserve a licence, nor a bike and nor a car.
Get a Zebra for transportation, precious one's ❗ learn to do something useful.
Problem is this illusion kinda only works on camera. Since humans have two eyes we can tell it's fake from a certain distance.
This was shown on sclastic news
Worst idea ever! Lol, it will get people thinking on other stuff "nah dont worry its just an illusion." CRASH!
Correct.
It’s a zebra crossing not a crosswalk.
Bad idea let's think logically I have a expensive car and if I was to see that I would obviously swerve to the side walk to prevent the car from getting damaged.
What is the point of introducing confusion to traffic?
It only looks that way from a single perspective. All others produce weird geometrics.
As you see in the video, the novelty of it makes pedestrians focus on IT instead of traffic. That’s stupid.
Likewise, traffic may focus on IT instead of scanning for pedestrians and other traffic.
You’ll notice at 1:24 the kid on the bike completely ignored the crosswalk’s meaning and almost T-boned pedestrians crossing.
Perhaps it doesn’t LOOK like a crosswalk from his angle, huh?
Creating confusion, where you're not quite sure what us going on and what to do makes people feel less safe, and that makes people pay more attention, my main problem is that cars will slow down the first time but won't bother in the future when they are wise to it
Lol the kid ignoring the crosswalk doesn't really have anything to do with the design, it's just more tolerated to have bike and ped traffic crossing at similar times instead of always stopping in euro countries when volumes are low. Think he was just a little too squirrelly there.
lol its a really dumb idea..children may believe it
Get out of the road it doesn't play music
This is pretty stupid, as an actually parking lot line striping contractor this looks like a huge liability. Imagine playing on your phone as your moving through a parking lot at 10 mph. You're going slow enough that you don't mind sending a text while exiting. You just left a meeting at an office that you are not used to. You bring your eyes to the road and it appears you about to be impaled by a giant 3d white tetris rectangle coming right at you. In a bit of fear, you swerve to the right and take out a pedestrian. Great idea!
Hahah HUH???? they're gonna swerve? like they don't notice others cars going over it. The idea is for them to pay attention. BTW most people going through that street most likely already know the town.
Carlo Danger If I’m going 10 mph I’d just hit the breaks. Also if it’s right there how would I swerve fast enough to seriously injure or even reach a pedestrian without already seeing it
*_pLaYiNg On YoUr PhOnE wHiLe DrIvInG, yEaH, oF cOuRsE!_*
And all the people stare down at it. They need a better idea.
Of course, texting while you drive.
